  1. I guess ALL the oil is now out of my rear shock. This is NO FUN!!! A good while back, someone posted a cut-a-way drawing of the shock. Can anyone help me find that post? I'm wondering about drilling into the shock to make a "refill" hole. Yeah I know the oil will just leak back out, but in my case it seems to leak slowly, as I have suspected my shock was dying for almost a year now. I'm just thinking maybe I could add oil before each trip. Circumstances right now are such that a new shock is out of the question.
  2. Before my long trip in april, i am considering replacing my rear shock. Has anyone done this? Do they make a good aftermarket shock. I dont really need an adjustable one, just something that i know wont fail during my long trip. (i started reading about the broken frame issue, and think a new shock might help, since my frame doesnt have a rust issue.). Is there a way to see if my shock is working properly? In the past i have increased the air pressure in the rear shock, just to see it go back to its original pressure and height days later. My bike is not a Royale. I just want some imput, because i know that these are very pricey.
  3. I notoiced a small amount of fluid under my bike in the garage floor today. I am thinking it's coming from the shock absorber in front of the rear tire. My bike is a 2000 Venture. any suggestions?
  4. Am I the only one that has a rear shock on the oil side go out on my 2001 RSV??
  5. Good friend called yesterday. He and his wife stopped for gas not far from home. When he got back on the RSV it sounded like a goose underneath everytime he bounce on the seat. I asked him if it felt like a pogo stick, but that wasn't the case. I told him that I was 99% sure his mono shock gave up the ghost. He is taking it to the dealer for warranty. Whatcha think?
  6. I don't post here to often lately, but I need your help! Lat night I received a call from my 93 year old Mom. She lives alone in northern Wisconsin and got a call from her doctor saying she needs a bypass. I live in georgia and can't be there all the time, but she called in a panic. When I talked to her she was in shock and didn't ask the Doc any quesions of consequences or options so I'm waiting for a call from him this morning. Please pray for her health and peace of mind and heart!
  7. Well the second shock in now gone at 81K on my "06 RSV. I have read what i could find on the Works and called them yesterday for a price. they Quoted $799, Is that a little high? Is there some one discounting these or is that it. Would like info on what to buy from those of you who have been thru it ,, Thanks
  8. I'm looking to tap in to your experience so that I get started in the right direction. My 86 VR rear shock stopped holding pressure this past weekend. It will pump up to whatever I select but if I immediately go back and check the pressure, the LCD says 0 pounds at which point it will pump up again. The only air I hear leaking when I do this is the bleed off valve at the end of the compressor cycle. I did some research here and it looks like the rear shock is the place to start or are there other common failures that should be checked first. Is there a trick to getting to the components on the rear shock or am I in for some serious disassembly? Thank you for the help, Ray
  9. I just bought a spare rear shock cheap but there is a slash in the rubber boot. What im looking for is someone who may have a bad rear shock laying around who could cut off the rubber boot and send it to me so I can "bond" it to the shock I have now. Ill cover shipping of course. Thanks.....
  10. My shock shipped on time and arrived yesterday from Works. Followed the instructions on the other Venture site and in under an hour i was test riding it. Other them removing the right side saddle bag for visability, i didnt remove any other major part. A swivel socket and extension bar did the trick for the top bolt and the old crusty shock dropped out. New one fit right in there with mild persuassion. Easy job. (Another big thumbs up for my CarbonOne lift adapter) I measured the sag or whatever its called and it seemed to be pre set. Initial ride was great but after 2 months of no shock anything would have been an improvement. Im sure this thing will work out great. bTW, Hagon Shocks called me this week to tell me they finally got the heavy weight springs in stock. Too late for me but i was going with them based on reviews, one year longer warranty and a better price. Hagon might now be an option if your built like me (big boned )
  11. My 2000 MM RSV started doing something very uncomfortable on me yesterday. While 2 up i applied the rear brake and for lack of better terms fellt a bad studder at the rear wheel . After that when just cruising along i could feel it slightly. But everytime I put on the rear brake it was rough, lots of front braking on the ride home. Checked brakes this am everything tight and alot of pad left. Anyone ever had a rotor worp?? Or any suggestions? I just changed out my rear shock after it blew out on a ride from cheerokee nc to gatlinburg tn. try no rear shock on mountains roads.. very interesting.. Anyway if anyone has had something like this happen please let me know .. 55,000 miles changed pads 4,000 miles ago do have a lowering kit on the rear. cannt think of anything else to add thanks!!!
  12. Rick, thanks for the help you were able to give me over the phone, several times I may add. Followed your advice and the forks went together flawlessly. Ended up using Amsoil Shock Therapy syn 10w fork oil. Took just over 1 qt to fill both forks. Glad the Amsoil dealer (LetHimRide) had an open bottle left over. Thanks again......
  13. Noticed a while back that it seems like the rear of my Venture "feels" lower. Got another bike and wasn't sure if it was just my imagination or not. Then a buddy who I was riding behind asked if my headlight was on bright (it wasn't). Tried adjusting the headlight, hadn't before, but it still seemed the headlight was high, which would be right if the rear was low. Checked the rear shock but saw no fluid leakage, aired it up and it held, at least for a while. The shock was replaced about a year ago, had puked its guts out, can't really remember any change after the shock was replaced, but not sure. Bikes still under warrenty, an 08, think I'm going to depanel a little and see what I can see. Any ideas? Thanks, Sam
  14. I am so p!$$ed off. I have a 07 RSV. At 11,000 km's (6800 miles) I had to get the rear shock changed because it started to leak. Still under warranty and at 34,000km (21,000 miles) it is shot again. Dealer contacted Yamaha for a replacement and they were told no way, not going to happen. Yamaha Canada told dealer that it is my fault that there is no way I should need another shock and if it is leaking, it is something I am doing. Dealer said Yamaha told him maybe I run tires underinflated. Well I don't, I always check my air pressure and besides, even if that were true, I don't think that would ruin a shock. So in other words, what Yamaha is saying is, it is impossible that they replaced the first shock with a possible defective one. Now, I know you only have my word on this..... I am 190lbs and rarely, my wife will ride on the back. She is 110lbs. I do not travel on rough roads and don't abuse my bike. The shock is over $600.00 plus labor to install it. How can a company offer a 5 year warranty if they can so easily get out of it? I am calling Yamaha Canada customer service tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to say, what to do about this, where I can turn to for help. There is no way I am going to bite the bullet for this. You can't tell me that they can say with 100% certainty that the replacement shock they put in was 100% perfect. HELP, please with your suggestions, comments. Help me arm myself for the attack on Yamaha Canada tomorrow. Thank you. Greg
  15. My 2005 RSTD Rear Shock is toast, and of course is out of warranty. The thought of having a works shock that can be rebuilt makes a lot of sense to me. My question is: Is there any of us second geners that switched from the stock that are sorry they gave up the air adjustable functionality of the stock shock? Also, does anyone know about how long a Works shock lasts before needing a rebuild? I also have noticed a wide variance of how long the stock shocks are lasting for different people. My RSTD has 13,000 miles on it. Has Yamaha corrected the problem with the replacement shocks? The guy at Works asked me if I pull a trailer. I currently do not and don't think that I will, but I did not think that I would have added a Venture trunk either, but I just did. If I add a trailer later, is this something that I can adjust for on the Works shock, or do i have to start over form the design process? Has any of us had any experience with this dilemma, or had the same questions and gotten answers?
  16. After joining the website I found so much awesome info! I went and purchased a gallon of Rotella T 15 /40 and a good filter recommended here and went and changed my oil and filter today! I also charged the air in my shock up to 40 psi for me and the wife and what a difference. New shock will be in my future soon from the looks of things. Looked at my Air filters and feel great because I always took my bike to the shop before. Not a Mechanic but I want to learn about my bike and how to take care of her. I just wanted to thank you all for all the great info and let you all know I am taking on a few more projects. Thanks again Carl
  17. Yes...I knew better. I have a PROGRESSIVE pump for the front, but I don't have a bicycle pump. So I thought I would just TAP the the air hose on the REAR SHOCK. It went up to 60 lbs...now I am worried about the seals. It did not pop...and it holds the air now (or at least appears to hold air so far)...but is it possible I could have pumped it up that high without blowing the seals? Yeah...I know STUPID. But with our trip starting tomorrow, I kinda want to know what to expect... In fact, what if it is blown...can I still ride until I get back from the trip?
  18. I finally got my rear suspension shock installed at the dealer. I asked the mechanic how much air was in the shock and he told me none. Is this correct because I had read that the air should be ajusted for a single or passenger rider depending on the weight of the individual. Thanks, lobo17
  19. Yep,rear shock is history. So here I sit waiting to drop $12000.00 our new to us trike, which will be delivered Wednesday, and what do I see when I went into the garage to remove the Voyager trike kit for the last time from the Silver beast. You got it, oil on the floor. I planed on riding it to work tomarrow. Now on top of paying for the new trike, I have to come up with $500.00 plus for a shock! Anyone out there have a good used shock cheap, that will keep me going for a while?
  20. Is there a non-air replacement possibility for the rear shock? My load is pretty consistent and don't neccessarily need the flexability of air. I change over to progressive shocks when I had a kawasaki voyager and was pretty happy with it. Sooo I was wondering if anyone has ever checked out a non-air replacement for our ventures. 2nd gen of course. The rears are showing some bad signs and I think it is getting close to replacement time. Thanks. Bill
  21. I have been looking for a replacement for the rear shock for my 99 RSV. After much searching I contacted Dave Quinn motorcycles and can purchase a new rebuildable shock for around $400 with manual preload adjuster or $554 with remote adjuster. this is for the standard shock or $464 manual or $624 with remote adjuster for the heavy duty. I have ordered the manual heavy duty for $464. and was told I could add the remote feture later if I wanted to. Will keep you informed after installed and used. We are also planning a trip to Nova Scotia in July and find very little information about roads and sites to see, so any Canada members that can give me a heds up would be great!
  22. I have a 1988 Venture and would like to replace the front fork springs and the rear shock with the progressive product (unless someone has another alternative to the darned expensive rear shock, mine won't hold air). I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but I've searched all over the site and need some help, so if you have a link to this question (which I'm sure has been answered already) please send me the link! I need to know what the procedure is to replace them. Thank you in advance! Shane
  23. Got her CLASS working, but the rear will not hold air. The CLASS pumps it up ok, but just a few miles down the road, the rear is floating like a worn out cadillac. Is there a simple fix, or does it need a new rear shock?
  24. I dropped my 06 RSV off last week at the stealership because the rear shock was leaking. Even though you all told me that it was covered under warranty, I still expected them to come back and say it wasn't covered for some obscure reason....Well, I got the call today that my shock was in and they have received approval from Yamaha to replace it! So in a few days I'll have the bike back...Just in time for our 2700 mile trip!
  25. I have my buddy's bike in the garage to do a clutch overhaul.. riding his bike over here, I noticed how much more agile his bike is compared to mine.. Keep in mind I had thought to have blown my Works shock on the last road trip but turned out to be only in need of adjustment.. Who would have thought the roads here in Nova Scotia were nicer than down in the USA? I had hit a huge divot of a hole on the interstate that threw me up out of the seat and the handling went to hell after that. An adjustment to the rebound on the road fixed most of it, and adjusting the preload when I got home brought the bike back to normal, so all is good there.. However, as mentioned before, I thought my bike handled nimbly but his bike is much more nimble than mine.. The only difference is that I have the Works shock and his has the stock OEM shock.. When I measured the rear of the bikes, at the rear corner of the right saddle bag, with the handle bars turned all the way over, and on level ground in the garage, my bike sits 1 inch taller than his at this point.. We both have leveling links installed. Does the Works shock and leveling links affect each other? I'm curious if the leveling links has my bike a little too tall now and affecting the handling a bit.. If I were to go back to OEM links, would it make a difference in the positive? Anyone else with a Works shock notice this?
