  1. OK, here is my question. We (3 couples) are headed to Canaan Valley, WV on Saturday September 3rd. We hav e rented a home for a week and are just going to be riding around looking at the sights. Canaan Valley is in the corner where PA, WV, And MD sort of come together. We are looking for siggestions on roads we should ride, towns to visit, sights to see and the such. I have looked at all the travel things on the web, the Motorcyel roads and things like that. We are looking for the raods only people who have ridden them know about. We are looking for the sights and places to go that you stumble on when riding. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You all in advance Rick, Shirley, Bryan, Lisa, Bob and Patty
  2. :clap2:Beautiful Place, to dam hot, People are very friendly and very nice roads
  3. Hubby and I were considering riding up to visit his parents in Young Harris. Called them to let them know when we'd ride up. His Dad said not to take the bike, the roads are washing out and in places icing up. Also mentioned there's sleet warnings daily. It seems odd weather for NE GA this time of year and I was wondering have any of you heard the same? I should mention if we took the bike we'd take the back roads up to Helen then Hiawassee, no going through Atlanta for us on the bike. We were going to make this our practice trip run before committing to Vogel since we are new to this.
  4. I just read the post from flyinfool, didn't do any of that! It's been three years and Leslie finally agreed to go for a short ride with a couple of friends of ours. We went out last night, staying on secondary roads, riding for about an hour. I wouldn't say she is a big fan, but said she may go out again. Her friend Ann mentioned taking a trip up island.
  5. Anyone have any suggestions on where to ride in the U.P. of Mich.Only have 1-1/2 days to ride tho.Not looking so much for stops but nice roads and views. thanks
  6. Ok I am planning my trip to Vogel I am taking 2 weeks off to go riding. I am leaving Ft Pierce Fl and heading up the coast on Rt 1 and A1A along the ocean to St Augustine for the first day and plan to camp out every day. I am planning to Head to Asheville NC to finish the BRP before I get to Vogel, my ? is does anyone know any nice spots to camp out in between and I only ride back roads no Hwy, I am leaving Aug 12Th-25Th so I have time to cruise the back roads. Hey and if anyone wants to meet up lets go for a ride. Tom:301:
  7. A friend of mine pointed this out to me, I am not to thrilled about the name but being one of the roads I grew up riding it is a nice ride. http://backofthedragon.com/
  8. For anyone whom I may have missed from this area going to Don's MD here's the plan. We'll be meeting up near Monroe at exit 15 & I-75 at the TA travel center Friday morning. Kickstands up at 10 am. Also some of us will be arriving earlier (about 8:30) and having breakfast at Denney's restraunt across the street. From there we'll be taking a leasurely ride to the hotel/Don's using mostly secondary roads. Staying off freeways as much as possible is the goal. Currently it looks like we'll head up 8-10 riders for this group. Hope to see you either there or at Don's. Larry
  9. The Corps of Eng is going to open the Morganza spillway to divert floodwaters from the Mississippi west of Baton Rouge and New Orleans starting this afternoon. A quick check of LA DOT conditions shows many roads closed already due to flooding. Travelling on I10 may become iffy as the waters rise west of New Orleans towards Lafayette.
  10. were going in june to ride the ozark mtn.s anyone travel this area or been on this trip? would like some info of must see things and roads you cant miss. were starting out in jonesboro ar. thanks to all that reply

  12. OK, OK, first I haven't got to ride since last part of October 2010 due to weather, work, funerals etc. Well today even with bronchitis I have had for the past lousy week now, coughing, hard breathing and all. Turned the key on and off three times till it quit clicking and I am not sure it even turned over 2 revolutions and VAROOOOM!!!!!! Yah, Yah I checked all the fluids, air, wheels and all the little stuff before hand. Took it to the car wash to get all the winter dust off her. (Note to self, find out why there is even dust in a closed garage.) Anyway I got home and Lisa had her boots on with a big smile on her face. What do I do? :lightbulb:Well I can't disappoint her so Lisa & I went for a ride!!!! Been driving the truck to work and hunting and about everywhere else and the roads around here did not winter well. We took off and I swear the roads were like glass! It was so smooooooooth we both couldn't believe it! (Smile) She says I done good getting this bike, she loves it! Got home about dark grilled some steak and life is good again! WARM WEATHER, WELCOME BACK!!!! :sign woo hoo: Oh and did I mention :sign woo hoo: !!! Bryan
  13. Ok, I've been a big supporter of the Avon Venons. I'm happy with them as an all round, all weather tire. But I'm at the point where the set I have now needs to be replaced. The one thing I'd like to gain in a new set of tires is better handling on off the beaten path roads. Lime rock, gravel and dirt. The Avons are not the greatest on these kinds of roads. I'm not going all out off road here but I do tend to wander down any road that will take me to someplace interesting. I live in Nebraska for Gods sake. It takes some effort to get someplace interesting. I ran Contys on my old GWs back in the 80's and they worked pretty well on the gravel roads. They were a pretty well treaded tire. Any recommendations on tire that would be an improvement in this area that would be available in 1st gen sizes? Mike
  14. Can't wait to see my tire guy in Woodstock, who told me I'd never get more than 12,000 on my new Metzler's when I got them back in February. When I told him that I had over 15K on the first set, he said my records must have been wrong, or that I was just yankin his chain. Well, I just turned 18K on this set yesterday, and there is still some pretty good tread life left on them, maybe another 2,000 or 3,000 before it hits the wear indicator, especially on the front. I'll likely get new rubber again in February anyway, but these Marathon 880's have been great tires for my '99 RSV. I run about 60/40 between surface roads and highway, and on the surface roads, it's about 50/50 between country roads and mountain riding. Everyone has their own preference, but there is no denying the great mileage and performance I'm getting, now on two sets in a row.
  15. From North of Atlanta to south of Kissimmee and back again. 1009 miles (489 today). Turns out that a big old tour deluxe is the "right tool" for this kind of ride. Great roads, great weather. My new $40 highway pegs were the bomb on the long return ride on 75 today. Pics to follow.
  16. They are spraying liquid salt on the roads now
  17. Well what a great day in Central Illinois. 4th of November and it wa 62 degrees. Figured we don't get many of these so jump on The RSV and took a ride. Ended up riding 120 miles basically just around in a circle. Rode the country roads and just enjoyed the day. I really hate the thought of putting the bike away but it won't be long now.
  18. Sunday night at 10 on History channel "Most Dangerous Roads" Should be interesting.
  19. The wife and I took a ride up through the N. GA, NC and TN mountains yesterday, and it was fabulous. The weather was awesome, no traffic, clear sunny skies, wide open roads. Gonna keep this in mind for later in Oct. when the colors are at full peak of their changeover. Some of our traveled roads included US19, US129 (the Dragon), US64, Foothills Pky., SR73, and US441. Traversed the Chattahoochee Nat. Forest, the Nantahala, the Smokies and the Cherokee Nat. Forests. Bought some nice boots at the outlet in Pigeon Forge, and dodged an unexpected rain event by heading west through Maryville TN and back south to the ATL. A little scary coming down US411 at night with all the bugs and threat of deer bolting out of the blue (guess my deer whistle worked! LOL!), but we got back to the ranch 13 hours after we started in one piece and happy we stole the day. Can't wait to do it again! Here's some pics.
  20. I have had Venoms on my RSV for about 7k miles. I maintain them well and there is plenty of tread front and back. I rarely ride in the rain but yesterday morning the roads were still wet from some overnight rain. I turned left at a stop light and came oh-so-close to laying her down. It wasn't just this one time but it seems to get very squirrelly on wet roads. I love them on dry roads but I think when I put new shoes on her next time I need to go a different route.
  21. They are now in the fields picking the corn and beans here so between getting the deer stirred up and some grain getting on the roads there are more hazzards rite now. Ride safe out there and keep your eyes open!!
  22. Just returned from a great ride to Davis, WV with my lovely bride. 501 miles round trip. Saturday was fabulous riding weather. Today was a little toasty at about 95 degrees. The roads around Davis are great riding roads. Unbeknown to us there was a rally there this weekend. There was about a bazillion bikes. 99% HD. We did see one Indian and two Ventures. Could be a good spot for a future VR Rally. Very rider friendly and lots to do. I hope everyone else had a great weekend. Now, back to reality.
  23. All I can say is wow. Just got back last weekend from 6 days of riding in the hills of WV. I love twisties but there are so many there it got to the point where I was happy to see a straight road. The roads are in good shape and very little traffic making for some really great riding. The people were very friendly also. I highly recomend a trip there if you have never been there.
  24. If anyone is planning a motorcycle trip to a part of Canada you havnt been before, maybe check out www.Vridetv.com . They have ridden a VRod across Canada and taken pretty high quality video from just about everywhere in Canada. They have found some great spots and even caught some wildlife like bears and Rocky Mountain sheep in their travels. They are mostly short videos, but they will give you a great idea about the roads and the type of the terrain and amenities around. Ill start you off with the Alberta Badlands and Dinosaur Provincial Park, just because its not too far from here. http://www.vridetv.com/sddinosaurprovpk.html Brian:smile5:
  25. It was epic, at least for me. 4424 miles in 9 calendars, 7 riding days, all of it towing a trailer. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4114/4786266951_9ea6715e72.jpg I had been planning this trip for months, laying in supplies and gear. I intended it to be a trial to a shorter but more camping-oriented trip coming up in September. That one doesn't have as many fall-back options, so I wanted to shake the bugs out NOW. There were bugs, and please note that I will be posting a trailer-centric message in that forum, but in this post will just mention in passing the issues I had. My trip actually was to start a week-ago Friday (7/17). I wanted to get a jump on the trip, since I was flying my wife Jamie to Indianapolis to avoid the longest days. I had to be there in time to get her at the airport, so I left after work Thursday. I ran up to Shreveport to have dinner with a friend, then rode on the freeways to Jackson, MS. I wanted to avoid deer, so I took the major roads. After three hours sleep, I headed north. It was my first real night riding with the HID, and I have to say that I wasn't impressed. It just didn't seem that much brighter than my old Silverstar Ultra. I didn't see the doe feeding on the shoulder until she was lit by the passing lamps, for example. However, one fellow got pissed at me and tailgated me for a while with his high beams on. I guess it was plenty bright for him. LOL I was just considering braking and then tailgating him with the high beams when he slowed and turned off his brights. No harm, no foul. I completed an iron butt by 2PM, but didn't print the form nor have the receipts, so I let it go. Besides, I already have my certificate. I got to Indy around 4:30 and relaxed until her plane came in. I was so relaxed, that I forgot that there was a time zone difference! I took the hotel shuttle and got there just in time to collect her. The next day we traveled to Battle Creek, MI, where my family still lives. We had a short diversion to Ohio. LOL One thing I saw right away was the casinos. In Michigan?! Things change, I guess. Sunday was the family reunion—the reason for the trip—and an off day. I did a minor trailer repair (see other post) and we went to the reunion on the bike. It was nice family time. Monday we went to the Soo Locks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Jamie had her first pastie in Mackinaw City, and it was delicious! The Mackinaw Bridge was scary to cross—the solid lane was closed for construction and we rode on the grating. I hate that stuff! At least it wasn't windy! The Soo wasn't busy, and we enjoyed watching a tour boat go through and I explained how the locks worked. Then we had an adult beverage before heading to the state park to camp. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4809470274_1644223e42.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4810290320_741b8295b0.jpg It was our first night really camping with the bike. Our previous trial included a friend with a car, which carried supplemental stuff. This time we were on our own. The Powerlets I'd installed on Roxie had worked perfectly, keeping our electronic tethers charged. Now, it inflated the air mattress—almost. It turns out that a hole had worn in it. We rode back to Sault Ste Marie and got a patch kit, and it lasted most of the night. By morning, we were caught in the floppy water-bed feeling deflated air mattress. Ha! Tuesday, we packed and had breakfast at the diner outside the state park. Those were the greasiest hashbrowns I had ever experienced. I am glad I had listened to the LD riders' advice and packed Kaopectate. The roads along the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway were gorgeous and deserted. We stopped to experience Tahquamenon Falls, which were even better than I remembered. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4123/4812710574_a8f5a1efd7.jpg We hustled to Marquette, where I'd planned to get pasties and eat at a park by Lake Superior. However, the dark rain clouds and trailer repairs forced us to change plans. We left Marquette in a heavy rain that changed to a drizzle until we got to the Keweenaw Peninsula. We gassed up in Houghton, then took recommended routes along the western edge of the peninsula. By the time we took the Brockway Mountain Drive, skies were blue with fluffy clouds. Even so, we were done with the outdoors following the rain, and elected to stay in a motel instead. Snow gauge http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4828386218_7c22f8f9ea.jpg The beginning of US41 http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828386706_02392e293b.jpg US41 is LONG! 1990 miles to Florida http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4827779821_2ceb181148.jpg I was struck at how many conversations we heard of return visitors to Copper Harbor. SO many people return again and again. It seemed like a pleasant, tranquil place, and the thimbleberry cobbler was delish. I would like to go back. Wednesday, we took US-41 south out of Copper Harbor. Those first dozen miles are incredible, probably the best roads I can remember. Smooth, twisty, and covered by a canopy, they are magic! The remainder of the roads to Green Bay were pretty, but mostly looked the same. I put Jamie on a plane and then my solo trip resumed. I began to pound the pavement hard, eating up miles. I met a friend in Wausau, and continued to Minneapolis. I got there by 9PM, and had a late dinner with a friend. She insisted I try the burger at the Buffalo Tap, since she knows I am an avid burger connoisseur. It was "good", perhaps the best in the Minneapolis area, but would only get a B by Texas standards. Buffalo Tap Burger http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828387308_7bbc4c7d37.jpg Rain was coming, and I didn't want to fight rush hour traffic with wet roads, so I was traveling by 5AM. I wanted to get to Omaha by dinner time, so I of course went to Fargo. LOL! I had to collect North and South Dakota for my ride map. Minnesota and the Dakotas have surprisingly good terrain. Maybe it is that I am used to Houston Flat, but I loved these roads. What I didn't love was the construction. SO MUCH CONSTRUCTION! Very irritating! I am glad that they are spending the stimulus money (finally), but seriously. 300 miles of construction would be plenty, don't you think? It was raining or threatening rain until I got to Iowa, so I wore my rain gear. That did a great job of keeping in my body moisture, so by the time I got to my friend's in Omaha by 7PM, I was a stinky mess. Luckily, they had both a shower and a cold adult beverage (or two). The next day (Friday) was my first non-riding day since the Sunday before. I hung around town, met friends, and showed my friend's wife how to add water to her Suzuki Intruder's battery. She loved learning how to do something for herself, and an hour's labor just worked up my appetite for the burger at Stella's. Now, this burger is justifiably famous. It gets a very solid A from me. The fries were great as well. Stella's in Omaha: remember it! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4821785478_1a4d2cfb1b.jpg I wanted to be home yesterday (Saturday), so I got an early start. My phone kept thinking I had a text message, and kept making a noise every 15 minutes. It was my alarm, so I hesitated to turn it off. But when I rebooted it, the noise stopped and I still got my alarm. I was on the road by 5:15 despite a nearly sleepless night. Not much to report for yesterday, except a 900 mile day. Kansas and Oklahoma had some really nice roads. I dodged a bullet coming into Houston, when a terror of a storm blew in. My route let me thread the needle, and I stayed dry. Eventually most parts that I went through got 3+" of rain. Like I said at the top, I went 4424 miles on what amounted to a trial trip for the real McCoy in September. Most of my miles will be with the wife on that trip, I want them as easy and trouble free as possible. The technique of flying her so as to skip the longest days worked really well. She has shown that she can do a few 350 miles days without complaint. I'm looking forward to those! Dave
