  1. I found this posted by scottybye on the ISRA forum and thought I would post it here. A letter from……THE BIKER When you see us moving past you quickly: Don't take offence or think we're trying to "show off". Ninety five percent of the time, we're trying to get out of your blind spot or taking ourselves out of a potential dangerous situation that has evolved around us. Distancing ourselves from you does not mean we want to race, but that we're giving ourselves the edge we need at the moment. When you hear our horn: Don't take offence or think we're trying to aggravate you. All we're doing is letting you know where we are in relation to you on the road, and we're more than likely aware of your inattentiveness to us while you're talking on a cell phone, eating, reading or involved in some other distracting aspect to your driving. It's important to us, and you, that you know we're there. When you hear our loud pipes: Don't become angry and hostile toward us. Yes, some are quite loud, but for some, there's a purpose behind being loud. It's about letting you know we're close by and we're constantly hoping that our investment in this accessory will help save our lives. Our pipes are really not about our ego...it's a pride and personalization to our form of transportation. When you see us in our clothes: Don't become fearful of us or think us weird. Our leather jackets, chaps, gloves and boots are the barriers between loosing massive amounts of flesh should something cause us to go down...nothing more, nothing less. Safety gear is paramount to our riding. We wear patches on our jackets, and pins on our vests. These are symbols of pride and honour within our group(s), individuals giving back to those who gave. These things bond us as a brotherhood and sisterhood among bikers. Not that we're better than anyone else, but that we have the same kind of nobility and pride in our accomplishments as you may have in the various aspects of your life. I guess one could say; our patches and pins are the decals and the bumper stickers of our involvement with society and the general public, of which we are very pleased to be a part of in our own little way. When you see us in a restaurant: You don't have to shield your child or feel intimidated. We have family, wives, husbands, children and loved ones too, just like you. We smile; we laugh and enjoy the moments we have. We are approachable, and would befriend you, if given the opportunity. When you see us in a parking lot: Don't convince yourself that we're there to "get you". More than likely, we just finished a long ride and are taking a break. Or, we may be meeting up with other riders for a charity run for young children, or another very worthy cause. We may just be admiring one another's bikes, sharing our pride with other brothers and sisters, just like you do with your personal vehicle. It's what we do...it's a part of our lives, and we'd be more than welcome to share with you what riding a bike is all about...if you'd only ask. When you see aggressive riding bikers: Don't put us all in the same stereotypical category as those whose behaviour and actions would cause you to react in disgust and intolerance. Many of us do not agree with this style of riding either, and we know and understand that human nature tends to blend us all together as the "same group". Most of us don't want that title...and don't deserve it. When you see a group of bikers on the roadways: Give us the courtesy of sharing the road with you. Please don't "move in" between several bikers in formation. This gets us very excited and nervous, especially when it's done with no due regard for our safety. Provide us with your awareness of the fact that we are much more vulnerable than you. We don't want to challenge you, for all of us are wise enough to know...we'd lose that battle. When you are turning left or entering a roadway/highway: Look, then look again...and then one more time. For we can be easily hidden, and appear to be invisible by such things as a telephone pole, another vehicle, bright lights or the glare of the sun...or possibly, the beads hanging from your rear-view mirror, among numerous other items that are displayed there. If you see us flashing our lights at you or blowing our horn, we're only trying to ensure that you will see us before tragedy changes both our lives. When you are behind us: Please give us the room we need and don't tailgate us. If you hit us, we're going down...HARD! We don't want to play games with you, we just want to enjoy the ride and the fresh air, and experience that which many of you have never lived for. If we accelerate away from you, don't interpret this action as though we want to drag race you. We're only trying to take ourselves out of a bad situation if you insist on being too close. When, and if, you experience road rage: Don't take it out on us just because we're smaller than you and more vulnerable. Think about what you're doing and the end result that may become a reality. The consequences of your actions and choices could be very detrimental to our well being, our families, our children and our loved ones. Yes, there are those that can tend to piss you off, however, rage towards them will not solve the issues, but accentuate them. Nine out of ten bikers will do everything they can to take themselves out of that situation without causing you or them harm. When you have an opportunity to talk to us: You'll discover, outside any influenced or stereotypical mindset you may have, that we are just as human as you are, just with different interests and toys. Many of us would give you the shirt off our back if it would tend to brighten your day or console you in some way. We're really no different...and we drive cars, trucks and vans too. So, meet us and greet us...I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that you'll be met with open arms. Thank you for attempting to understand

  3. SOLD OUT: These are a custom designed bell made exclusively for our club. Many have been sold already but I ordered extras so that I have some available for anybody who missed the original order or for new members who would like to have them. Price is $15.00 per bell and that includes shipping within the USA or $19.00 per bell to Canada. Payable via PayPal to dnelson@venturerider.org For those of you who may not know anything about Guardian Bells, here is the story. Legend has it that Evil Road Spirits have been latching themselves on to motorcycles for as long as there have been bikes on the road. These Evil Road Spirits are responsible for mechanical problems and bad luck along a journey. Legend goes on to say that by attaching a small bell onto your bike, the Evil Road Spirits will become trapped inside the bell where the constant ringing drives them insane, making them lose their grip until they fall to the ground. (Ever wonder where potholes come from?) Legend also has it that the mystery of the Guardian™ Bell carries twice as much power when it is purchased by a friend or loved one and given as a gift. Show someone how much you care. Offer them defense against the Evil Road Spirits! Give a Guardian™ Bell and share the Legend of Good Luck it offers to a motorcycle and its rider!
  4. My wife wants a GPS for Xmas & it looks like everyone uses Garmin, are there any models with problems, as for options, I dont need bluetooth or mp3 , must be able to program on the road, Thanks Gambler
  5. This is AWESOME!----------hope that all the pics. come thru!!!! In Texas we really do pull off the road and stop for funerals......nobody moves until the last car has gone by. http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.2&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 What follows is a message from Vicki Pierce about her nephew James' funeral (he was serving our country in Iraq): "I'm back, it was certainly a quick trip, but I have to also say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. There is a lot to be said for growing up in a small town in Texas . The service itself was impressive with wonderful flowers and sprays, a portrait of James, his uniform and boots, his awards and ribbons. There was lots of military brass and an eloquent (though inappropriately longwinded) Baptist preacher. There were easily 1000 people at the service, filling the church sanctuary as well as the fellowship hall and spilling out into the parking lot. However, the most incredible thing was what happened following the service on the way to the cemetery. We went to our cars and drove to the cemetery escorted by at least 10 police cars with lights flashing and some other emergency vehicles, with Texas Rangers handling traffic. Everyone on the road who was not in the procession, pulled over, got out of their cars, and stood silently and respectfully, some put their hands over their hearts. When we turned off the highway suddenly there were teenage boys along both sides of the street about every 20 feet or so, all holding large American flags on long flag poles, and again with their hands on their hearts. We thought at first it was the Boy Scouts or 4H club or something, but it continued .. for two and a half miles. Hundreds of young people, standing silently on the side of the road with flags. At one point we passed an elementary school, and all the children were outside, shoulder to shoulder holding flags kindergartners, handicapped, teachers, staff, everyone. Some held signs of love and support. Then came teenage girls and younger boys, all holding flags. Then adults. Then families. All standing silently on the side of the road. No one spoke, not even the very young children. The military presence..at least two generals, a fist full of colonels, and representatives from every branch of the service, plus the color guard who attended James, and some who served with him .. was very impressive and respectful, but the love and pride from this community who had lost one of their own was the most amazing thing I've ever been privileged to witness. http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.3&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 I've attached some pictures, some are blurry (we were moving), but you can get a small idea of what this was like. http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.4&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0' These photos are awesome !! http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.5&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.6&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.7&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.8&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.9&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.10&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.11&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.12&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.13&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.14&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0 http://us.f601.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download/us/ShowLetter?box=Inbox&MsgId=1322_6716341_9914_1671_560953_0_26416_762806_3613002726&bodyPart=2.1.15&YY=5656&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes&order=down&sort=date&pos=0&view=a&head=b&Idx=0THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST MOVING E-MAILS I'VE SEEN. 6. In case you haven't noticed I have been away from the site for a little over a month. Actually it's been closer to 2 months but like I said, who's noticed. Well, I just felt like I should explain. By the way, some of you will remember me as "Mississippi" from the vogel ride-in. I was riding drag for group 2. Anyway, in Sept. my wife and I took a 10 day road trip to South Dakota. It was the first vacation we've had in over 3 years. It was really nice; we got to see all the attractions and then some. took back roads up there and did some pretty empty country but it was still nice. took the interstates home except for the stretch between springfield Mo. and Memphis. I like the drive thru Ark. It goes right past where I used to live. Then, on 8 Oct I left for West Virginia, for the Fall ride with the Venturers. I know many of you are like me, spend time on both sites. great people on both sites. Anyway, the ride-in lasted until Sunday, the 14th when most people headed home. On the 13th we road to the New River Gorge bridge and also road down to the river and then across the old bridge. Then we went to a barbeque place for dinner. After dinner we headed back to the hotel in Beckley. Unfortunately, I didn't make it. Right afterI got back on Hwy 19, a 4 lane divided road, there was another group of bikes (not our group) in the right lane. They were approaching an intersection and evidently wanted to turn left but had almost missed the turn as they were almost stopped in the right lane. As I approached in the left lane I saw that they all had their left turn signal on. I backed off the throttle and continued in the left lane. Just as I approached the intersection either the lead bike or one near the front pulled out left in front of me evidently heading for the left turn lane. I slammed on the brakes and steered to the left, not knowing if the rest were going to follow. Evidently he didn't see me and continued to the left turn lane where I hit him. Luckily, just before we collided I was able to turn my bike sideways so I didn't hit him with the front tire. We pancaked, my right side to his left side. I left the bike and rolled down the median some ways. My bike, after hitting him, fell over on the left side and slid some ways. So both sides had heavy damage. almost all of the plastic was either cracked, broken or scraped badly. I wound up seperating my right shoulder and banging up my left knee. Spent two days in the hospital in Beckley during which time my son drove up and picked me and the bike up. On 23 Oct I had surgery on my shoulder and started therapy last week. Xrays showed nothing in my knee broken but it is really bothering me so I had an MRI done this past Sunday. Don't want more surgery but hope they find out what's wrong. Bike is totaled; they were supposed to pick it up today but when the guy called last night he got upset when I told him I had removed accessories, including my pipes, with the consent of the adjuster. He is from some place in Alabama and I guess he is going to try to rebuild the bike. I was going to do the same but they wanted over 4k for salvage value. Parts would run at least 10k so I decided it wasn't worth it. Anyway, got my check for the bike and came out pretty good. It was an 06 with a little over 18k. Oh yeah, this is the kicker....the guys' friends got together and 6 of them made written statements that he was ALREADY in the left turn lane, and it appeared I was trying to pass him on the LEFT !!! And the Fayetteville police BOUGHT IT !!!! So far though, the police haven't sent me any suprizes. So, that's my story. Won't be doing any riding for awhile. 3 weeks ago I said I would never ride again but can't lead a sheltered life and enjoy living. So right now it's a maybe. What bike will I get?? Don't know that yet either. I'll probably catch hell with all of you but I am leaning towards an Ultra. But like I said, no decision right now. Anyway, it's good to be back and I'll be lurking around. By the way, I just want to say that the people I was riding with were wonderful. A couple of them were with me at the scene and kept me as calm as possible considering the awful pain and then many of them went to the hospital and waited until late that night until I was out of the ER. One couple even stayed an extra day until my son got there. Didn't want me to be alone. I know this group of folks on this site would be equally as concerned and helpful. That's why I am so happy and proud to be part of thses two wonderful groups. You may meet the nicest people on a Honda but Venture riders are true friends !!!!!!
  7. I was riding to work down Vasco road from Brentwood to Livermore. It was getting dark but I passed another 2nd gen venture going the opposite direction. It was too dark to see the color and I am pretty sure that it wasn't Rich99 because I think it had the dual spotlights with the headlight. I was wondering if it was anyone here. This was at just a little after 5:00 PM on Thursday afternoon. I was traveling south bound on Vasco road still close to Brentwood. Or maybe this was a mystery rider that has not yet had the pleasure of becoming part of our family. If that is the case, I will have to hunt him/her down.
  8. Yesterday I Road A Friends Rstd To The Shop For Him About 60 Miles I Use To Have An 05 Myself And Thought It Was The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread Then Feb.07 I Bought My Venture And Have Road Nothing Else Since Till Yesterday The First 15 Miles Felt Great But The Futher I Went The More I Missed My Baby Don't Get Me Wrong The Rstd Is A Great Bike But A venture Will Spoil You Quick. I Told Him That Until He Was Ready To Step Up That He Should Not Ride Mine.

  10. I don't know how many others have had the same problem as I did. While on a trip I stopped along the side of the road and had to get my glasses out of the saddle bag to look at the map. Well decided to put the glasses in my pocket rather than back in the bag. Stopped for gas 31 miles later and realized my cover had blown off, forgot to latch it down. Lucky for me we turned around and 15.8 miles back in the middle of the road was my cover, a few scratches but still in good shape.
  11. she was not going to stop. After spending several hours moving millions of leaves to the side of the road for leaf pickup, I decided to take a little ride and enjoy the mid 60's degree day. About three miles from the house I was on a nice back road going about 40mph and as I came to a slight rise in the road that has a road coming out from my right just over the top of the hill, I noticed the top half of a car coming toward the intersection. I immediately slowed down and just as I crested the hill, the car blew thru the stop sign and turned toward me. I layed down on the air horns and let them blast. If I had not anticipated the car doing that, I would have hit it right in the driver's door. I think I startled the woman as she almost ran into the ditch on the other side of the road trying to get out of my way. I am real glad I was paying that close attention, because she sure was not. 15. The biker...kinda long, but read it all please!!! I saw you, hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But, you didn't see me, put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you, pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But, you didn't see me, playing Santa at the local mall. I saw you, change your mind about going into the restaurant. But, you didn't see me, attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief. I saw you, roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But, you didn't see me, driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. I saw you, frown at me when I smiled at your children. But, you didn't see me, when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you, stare at my long hair. But, you didn't see me, and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love. I saw you, roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But, you didn't see me, and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none. I saw you, look in fright at my tattoos. But, you didn't see me, cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart. I saw you, change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But, you didn't see me, going home to be with my family. I saw you, complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But, you didn't see me, when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you, yelling at your kids in the car. But, you didn't see me, pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me. I saw you, reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But, you didn't see me, squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you, race down the road in the rain. But, you didn't see me, get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you, run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But, you didn't see me, trying to turn right. I saw you, cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But, you didn't see me, leave the road. I saw you, waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But, you didn't see me. I wasn't there. I saw you, go home to your family. But, you didn't see me. Because, I died that day you cut me off. I was just a biker. A person with friends and a family. But, you didn't see me. Repost this around in hopes that people will understand the biker community . If you dont repost this, It sucks to be you. I hope you never lose someone that rides.
  16. Well today it was my turn to have an accident. I was driving on the Hwy in the right lane about 65 mph and I had a vehicle directly to my left. I noticed in my rear veiw mirror a white vehicle coming up on me fast this Hispanic guy tried to split the difference between me and the car I was forced to the shoulder as he passed it appeared he was beating someone and trying to hold them down in the front seat. I didnt crash from being on the shoulder. I caught up to him and looked at him while I was next to him did nothing else but look. I guess this set him off because he tried to run me off the road at this point. I sped up hoping to get away and outran him for awhile but he kept coming after me. I was hoping he was gonna give up but he didnt. I got off at a ramp going a good clip and had a car in front of me and he was closing fast on me like he was gonna ram me I couldnt go around the car in front so I decided to go off road but this exit the ramp is a raised ramp and much higher then the surrounding terrain. I m not sure what happened but I believe I lowsided after I started down hill on the grass/gravel I lost control somehow landed on my back and right side. I went to hospital to get checked out little bruised up but I'm in one piece and nothing appears to be broken little bit of headache though (Helmet on some small scratches looks like my butt and side took the brunt.) It wasnt worth chasing him down to find out if he was hurting someone else. I'm lucky I guess. Didnt get the plate though. I guess he caused another accident down the road though. My bike is probably pretty screwed up I know I broke alot of right side plastic.
  17. Actually, this is more like murder. This is just terrible. "Because of your recklessness, which was passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone, Todd had no choice but to run off the road to avoid hitting you head-on. You caused the crash that resulted in his death and the injury to his wife. You didn't even care enough to stop and help them." http://www.newarkadvocate.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071020/OPINION03/710200325/1014/OPINION
  18. I am in the process of ordering parts to repair my 2005 R S T D. I am looking at switching saddlebags. I want to replace the O E M hard bags with the leather covered Royal Star tour classic saddlebags part # STR-4NL73-02-00 These fit the 97-2001 Royal Stars and current Road Stars. I can make some modifications if necessary, but am not as handy as some of you. I thought they might make my bike look a little different. Anyone having experience with these bags please jump in. Thanks in advance.

  20. Well almost. Picked up my 04 Venture from just north of Brisbane, Queensland and rode it back home across Australia to my hometown of Perth. I did the trip in 4 days for a total of 4,780 kilometres or 2,968 miles. The bike ran perfectly with nothing coming loose or worse falling off (including me). I kept a record of all my fuel stops and my gas useage worked out at 38 mpg U.S. 45 mpg Imperial 16 kms/litre I pretty much kept to the speed limit and probably sat on around 70 mph. Saw plenty of wildlife on the road to avoid including - kangaroos, mobs of wild goats, emus, cows, wombats even a dingo and an echidna. Never having ridden a Venture before I can say I am very pleased with the bikes performance. I did notice that on some road surfaces there was a lot of road noise coming from the tyres and setting up a loud resonance thru the fairing at certain speeds. The bike is fitted with Bridgestones. Is there a more quiet tyre or is this normal? Also, I notice the tyres have a very high profile. Is it possible to lower the bike a little by fitting tyres with a lower profile? All in all I am very happy and would do the trip again but at a more leisurely pace.
  21. I an new to the GPS world. I have used a non-map handheld to mark tree stands and good fishing holes but that's about it. Recently we used a family members Garmin Nuvi on an out of town trip and it was fabulous for finding our way around and getting back again. One issue we had was that we could not specify a route. Granted, once i took a turn off course it was quick to recalculate, but the feature I want is to be able to specify which roads I take ahead of time. I could look at the map determine my route but the nuvi would not let you pick a route road by road ahead of time. I think that is important as I may not be familiar enough with the roads to know how to take alternate routes without the help of the GPS. Is this feature available on other GPS modules or did I miss something on the Nuvi. It is not covered in the details of most units. I am considering the follwoing uints after reading he posts here and doing research. Lawrence Iway 350C Magellen 2200T TomTom Rider 2 Garmin Zumo Any advice on this feature and these units would be apprecieated.
  22. great warrenty,7 days home to home, can't beat that,ON THE ROAD AGAIN
  23. This is a day that will go down in the anals of VenureRider history. As you folks may know, ythere was a breakfast Meet and Eat held in St. Paul, MN this morning. And......... (drum roll please)................... Black owl was the only one that showed up on a scoot. Of course I looked like a drowned rat when I got there. Got about 10 miles down the road from the house when the sky's opened up...........
  24. A while back, somebody posted a link here for a site dedicated to Road Star riders who are adding fairings, bags, etc. to their bikes. I'm usually pretty good at searching and finding old posts but have not found this one. Can anybody help?
