  1. Riding season is finally here in western New York.......Had my FIRST "official ice cream" of the riding season...........aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !! Thanks Kenny, it was soooooooo goooood !..sorry no pictures, it was gone in a flash....... :fnd_(16):
  2. Just wondering about a BBQ place in Johnson City Tn. It's called Firehouse Restaurant. Anyone have any input about this place, thinking about Riding over some weekend to check it out. We live about 3 Hours away.
  3. Looks like my riding season will be shortened for a while. Went to see a different orthopedic surgeon yesterday about my right knee, which was scoped out 2 years ago by another surgeon and is failing. I was hoping he would be able to do another scope to buy me some more time but after his thorough evaluation he says I definitely need a new knee. There are several things going on in there that just cant be scoped out. He also looked at pics of my left knee and said that it looked much worse then my right knee. I told him that knee was scoped out in 1998 and its been holding up fine save for some low level pain. He was surprised. Either way, looks like ill be shooting for a Jan 2012 surgery date. I should have sufficient leave for this by then. He also took me off naproxen and started me on Celebrex, which seems to be working a little better. WooHoo, only 10 more months to go!!
  4. Well, I now have my bike up in Massachusetts, going to be here till September, looking forward to riding here in the North-East, Trailered the bike up here from Fla, two trucks and two u-hauls, left on Fri, couldn't stand it today, let my deckhand drive my vehicle, so took it off the trailer and rode it the last 200 miles, my buddies truck was pooping out, and it was just a beautiful day, TILL- some a*#hole alomost ran me into the wall on the inside on 195N in New Bedford, Mass., came across three lanes, talking on his cellphone, never even saw me, yep, nothing like a rush of adrenalin, and your heart pumping to make you feel alive, reminds you why you have to stay on the ball constantly when riding, if I had been daydreaming it would have been all over. So now, here I am in Wareham, MA, getting excited about the summer to come, and LIFE is good.:cool10::cool10:
  5. I just wanted to throw this out and get some opinions. I am getting what feels like to be some sort of pinched nerve feeling in my upper back, just to the right of my left shoulder blade while riding the bike. It doesnt take long for it to show up, maybe after 20 minutes or so of riding. I can move around and make it go away, or start to feel better, but it is there. Not real painful, but more annoying than anything. I have only put about 500 miles on this bike, and I don't remember it happening on our old bike (1982 Honda Silver Wing Interstate with stock seats) both bikes backrest, as I just added one to our new bike. Its a 97 Royal Star Tour Classic with the Yamaha Comfort Cruise Seats by Corbin. The most that we have riden so far is 125 miles in one day but we have a 1200 mile trip coming up next weekend so I am looking for suggestions on what to do? I appreciate any input,.. I also wanted to ad that I am 45 years young, 6'0, 195Lbs
  6. All, gas prices being what they are, I am riding to work every day I possibly can. Problem is I have to wear business attire at my job. Any advice on how to pack a days worth of dress clothes so it wont look like it came out of the hamper when I get to work? My ride is 30 mins or so. I can't afford a custom riding suit so thats not an option. I ride in chaps and can only imagine what my slacks would look like after a ride in those. Thanks for any advice or experiences!
  7. I filled my tank up a few days back and have been riding back and forth to work in the rare Scottish sunshine, on my way home yesterday I noticed the fuel gauge dip and the "F" count begin, I anly had 78 miles since brimming her . Now I am riding solo and doing anywhere from 55 to 90 mph (mostly above 70 ) so it looks like I'll be lucky to get 100 miles to the tank before empty, unless I bumble around at 55 all day . However I never had any "Low fuel warning light appear" is this only on the Venture model as I can't see a low fuel light on the consol ? Cheers.
  8. Just returned from seven days of riding the Ozarks, Missouri and Oklahoma. Some of the best riding I have ever experienced (not scenery but roads, the scenery ain't bad). Twists, turns, up hills down hills, switchbacks. Ft Smith, Harrison, Jasper, Mt Judea, Pig Trail, Eureka Springs, Branson, Yellville, Tahlequah, Sallisaw. 2,500 miles of fun. Had no idea such great riding existed in that area. I have 1,300 pictures and over 5GB of videos. It will take me some time to sort, edit and post them. The folks were "Texas friendly" and the prices for food and lodging were very reasonable. Now that I know a little bit more about the area I'm going to ride it again. We had mapped out all the routes on our GPS prior to the trip but changed plans once there taking the routes suggested by the local folks. We used these the most often: Let's Ride Motorcycle Riding Guide of the Ozarks PDF Map files Next time I will stay in the Jasper area.
  9. This morning was cold so I only took my leather jacket, however it warmed up fast and I had neither my summer riding jacket or sunscreen I am now lobster red but I still enjoyed the ride.
  10. first time out scared the heck out of me! Not what I was expecting.Took a few mile to figure out how to handle it.It is a handfull when I'm riding alone, but settles out real nice riding 2up.I think it still needs some fine tuning. The wife likes it and thats what counts.I think it will work out just fine for 2up riding and its easy to remove for two wheeling.
  11. OK so I have the forks slid up an inch and then installed the barons rear lowering kit. I absolutely LOVE it. It handles fine and I can get my feet flat so i worry less. Only 2 real problems so far...I have dragged the mufflers once or twice leaving the driveway (change of riding habits can fix this one). The other problem is that riding 2 up on one of our fav roads at about 65 there is a dip that caused a strange noise and a rubber smell. Crawled under it and there is a bolt that sticks thru the inner fender about a 1/4 of an inch past the welded nut it screws into. it had scuffed the tire a bit as well. I pulled the rear seat and found the bolt and just put washers under it to shorten the extra amount that poked thru the fender. Hit that same spot today fully loaded with a head of steam and no problem at all! So if you have the barons rear kit you might want to take a look at that bolt. Frank
  12. Sorry I havent been around for Quite a while. Been very hectic and havent had much time online but I finally Got the firebike done and hopefully will actually get some time to ride this year. Just before I went off the radar I had gotten a Vmax rear in a trade for the one in my bike. After a while I learned the Rear just didnt match my riding style and wanted to go back but being as mine had found its way to Florida I couldnt do that. Ive since bought a replacement original for the bike but the rear has high miles on it. Currently my bike has 16000 on it. Im interested in trading the Vmax rear for a low mileage (equivelent to the miles on the bike) or if someone wants to make a fair offer. There is nothing wrong with the rear it just doesnt match my riding style. Quite a few here swear by the Vmax rear. Scotty
  13. One of the great things about this site is that you come across articles you haven't seen for a while or missed before. I happened across these two that are good reads and reminders as the riding season starts. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48003 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9893 Thanks to Monty and Carl for these riding reminders. And be safe out there !
  14. While riding today I noticed the engine light came on and went off. Turned key off and restarted light didn' t come back on for 10miles then did it again.Could someone help.
  15. Hi Quick question for all...I got my 83 VR last year and just love it.. Best Riding bike I've ever had in 30 years of riding. No 2nd gear problems yet with 28,000 However I for the life of me cannot get it up on it's center stand.. I'm 6:4 230 and fairly strong. I've also had a buddy of mine who has ridden for years and is an instructor for the MSF try as well... the 2 of us could hardly get it up. He said he has never had difficulty like that either. Is there some trick I'm missing on this particular bike or is that a problem others have had as well? Just curious? Thanks, Clay
  16. I've been telling myself for years that I need to do it. Now I am registered. I'm taking the "Basic Riding Course 2" (Formerly the Experienced Rider Course) from MSF. It says that a passenger is welcome and since I do a lot of 2-up riding, my navigator will attend also. First opportunity is in May but I'm looking forward to it and hope I don't drop it!!
  17. I'll try to make this short. I'm the new President of our local STAR Touring and Riding Chapter (Chapter 186 Contra Costa Ca). The closest Yamaha dealer is about 40 miles away in another county. There is a Honda/Suzuki dealer in the middle of the county that has asked Yamaha for a dealership but has been denied because Yamaha will only allow new dealers to be a "stand alone" dealership. OK, to the point. I'm starting a mail/email campaign to encourage Yamaha to grant this Honda/Suzuki dealer a Yamaha dealership. Our Chapter is all for writing Yamaha to put pressure on them to allow this shop a dealership. Because the sport bike market is so large I was wondering if there is a national riding organization like STAR Touring And Riding for sport bikes. If so I'd really appreciate any information so I can contact the local chapter to enlist their support. Thanks.
  18. I ride an 83. the Elite II's on the bike are getting thin and are quite old. I would like a tire with more "grip" in the wet compared to what I am riding on now. The Dunlop D404's look like they have a far better tread pattern for wet riding. How do they ride on the dry as well? anyone running them? Hate them? love them? How about bridgestone S11's? I'd like E3's but they dont make them in venture sizes anymore. I cant find them in 120/90-18 for t he front and 140/90-16 for the rear.
  19. Just taking a shot in the dark. Does anyone have any young ladies riding gear that your children might have outgrown that you might want to sell? My Daughter just turned 13 last Friday and shes 5ft tall and as skinny as a rail. I need to pick up riding gear for her and was hoping to save a little money. If you happen to have anything just PM me. Thanks....Karl
  20. It's been constant for weeks. One storm behind the other and I hate riding in this stuff. Mike

  22. reference: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=57395 The "new to me" GL1800 is a 2007. The black is the metallc, this thing really sparkles in direct sunlight. The short time that I have spent riding so far has been very revealing. I suppose many of you already know some of this, but here goes. Comparing to my 2007 Venture. Even though it's heavier it feels and handles lighter, lower center of gravity. Smooth strong power all the way through the revs, I like to describe it as almost like a powerful electric motor feeling. Of course electronic fuel injection instead of hand choke and four carburetors. Seat is a little lower, and being inseam challenged, it's much more reassuring when stopped. Lots of other little goodies, like electronically controlled two memory preloads for the rear shock (solo/passenger). Speaking of the rear shock, I don't think you have to be in constant fear of a catastrophic rear shock failure at any moment. I loved both my Ventures, rode a '84 until 2004, had my '07 for over a year, but struggling with it being top heavy and wanting to not put my passenger in jeopardy of crashing to the ground when stopped, I was considering some kind of trike kit. Wth the Wing, I may feel enough in control to actually enjoy riding more than I have recently. This thing has crash bars that supposedly holds it up at about a 45 degree angle if it tips over, keeps it off of anyone on it as well as not crashing into the saddle bags, etc. There's a lot more that could be discussed about all the little gadgets, doo-dads, bells&whistles, etc. but that's just "stuff". The main thing for me is feeling more comfortable, at ease, and hopefully I'll get at least a couple more years of fun, enjoyable riding. (I'll be 74 years young next month). Oh, yeh! Just remembered to add this, no chirp, no whine. Everyone feel free to comment.

  24. Coldest Canadian riding across Canada in 19 days? Crazy and cold? No worry that the bike overheats. http://coldestcanadian.ca/19-days-bone-chillin-riding
  25. I being somewhat new to this group with having been to only two events am and have been truely impressed with the friendship, behavior and general manners that this group displays. Not that there arent good nice people riding other bikes that have meetings and i have attented most brands meetings and rallies but this group is by far the the type of "bikers" i prefer to be friends with and riding with. that being said like it or not you can plan on seeing me at more events where Venture rider.org is concerned thank you all. ps. they do like to eat
