2. I will be leaving for Houghton Tuesday afternoon from Dubuque, IA. Riding up through WI. I don't have to be there at any particular time. I plan to ride around the area Wednesday morning, then I have a 4 day conference for my MBA at Michigan Tech. Ride back to Dubuque Saturday.
3. Is this true on a RSTD? They will run poor with the lowers removed...affects air intake flow....and they will bog at speed. I took the lowers off to check the cruise control and did a cable adjustment. I took it for a ride to test it without the lowers and it runs like crap! It Bogs down. It will idle fine and run gread at full throttle but bogs in mid range. Could running without lowers cause this? Mark

6. Hello all, new to the forum and the cruiser world. I have been riding crotch rockets for all my life, but due to recent surgeries that is now over, and I can't be any happier. I MUST ride, I love it to death, and I am so happy to have a big ol cruiser now. It's a world of difference in comfort and style. Freebird said I shouldn't disclose my age though. I am now the proud owner of a 1996 RSTD. Got it for a great deal and the bike is flawless. But I have encountered an issue. I have been searching the forum and believe I have come to the r/r connections, but I just cleaned them and I am having the same issue. The problem I am having is that on occasion when I started the bike, the speedometer would bounce around and lights on the cluster would flash while revving it up in neutral, but would run at idle like the electricity is dying. From my previous ownership of bikes, I immediately ran out and bought a battery, charged it, slapped it in and same issue. Then listening closely every time I would cycle the key, I would hear the main relay, kind of "fizz" if you will. Searched the forums again, and determined that I needed to clean all the battery/ground connections. Did so, still same issue. So then I bought a new main relay, and replaced it. and everything was awesome for about 4-5 days, now the same issue. Every time I did something I could ride the bike for a day or 2 and then my little gremlin came back. Now I cannot ride it at all. . So anyone have an idea, I'd love to hear it. I have attached an image of my new love, also have attached a picture of my exhaust, anyone have any clue what type of pipes these are? The PO put them on, and I bought it from a dealership.
7. Today as soon as I get off work, I'll be leaving on a trip to East Tennessee. My plan is to leave my home in Mansfield, Tn. at about 5:00 pm and ride to Cookville, where I'll spend the night. Then I'll get up early Thursday morning and continue up I-40 and exit at Kingston. I'll take Hwy. 304 to Hwy. 68 then I'll hit the Cherohala Skyway over to US-129 (the Dragon). From there I'll take the Foothills Pky. to Wears Valley Rd. to Pigeon Forge. It should be a good days ride. Then Friday I may ride over to the Wheels Thrrough Time Motorcycle Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. I'll be riding back home Saturday. I won't be able to ride my Venture because it really isn't quite ready for a long road trip yet, so I'll be riding my 1100 V-Star. The only thing that would make this trip better is if I had someone to ride with. My wife really isn't into riding yet and all my friends with bikes couldn't get off work. So I'll be going it alone. Hoping for a good safe trip.
8. I was riding back home after having lunch with a couple friends today and came as close as possible to hitting a Cement Mixer truck broad side at 60 mph. I was riding along enjoying the ride when I came upon a crossroads, traffic from the left and right had a stop sign. As I approached the intersection the truck evidently didn't see me and started across the road. I had no time to stop and I hit the horn and stayed as far right as I could and was getting ready to take it off the road. I just squeezed by with maybe a foot to spare. If I had been riding in the left track of my lane instead of the right track I would not be here to type this post. Scared the you know what out of me. As I rode on home I got to thinking about how close I was to never seeing my wife and daughter again. Man that really scared me then. I decided right then that I had better get things in order at the house so if it does happen my wife knows where the investments are and who to contact and where the life insurance is and all the other things we take for granted that we have time to cover. Ride careful.
9. Hey everyone, great forum as always. This is a cool place. Tomorrow I'm finally leaving for my 5th Annual Ben Kilik Memorial Ride. I'm going to do 30 of these total. Anyway, it's a killer journey every year spanning at least 2 weeks. I have a link to my friends website that has a rough outline of the route. It would be great to see any and all of you anywhere along the way. http://www.paulstocum.com I write an extensive blog about it which I as yet haven't started. I've been bowled over by the extent of ripping the bike and trailer to pieces to paint, repair, maintain, upgrade etc. Man what a job! So I wanted to publicly thank everybody for their awesome advice. I delinked the brakes. R1 calipers, ditched antidives (thanks Skydoc!), stainless lines, Vmax rotors, EBC rear rotor, HH pads, Dunlop E3's, final dirve off 09' with 10k (gorgeous), windshield, upgraded driving lights (w/parade mode, my personal favorite!) new trailer tires and completely disassembled and painted black. The bike rides great. Hate the progs but maybe they'll mellow. Stops like mother! I swear I could lock up both wheels and send myself hurling. Dunlops totally rock. I'll put a link up to my extensive blog (not nearly as good as Jack Reipe but I can dream!) for anyone that's interested and if anybody wants to tag along it'd be great to see you! We tend to camp 2/3 of the time. Give a text or call. Thanks for all the invaluable advice. I'd be totally screwed otherwise! Cheers, John K
10. Did 400+ miles in 14 hours yesterday in just picture perfect weather, and hit some of the best GA-NC-TN roads you'll ever ride in a day. Starting from the 'burbs in Marietta, we did back roads to Dahlonega, northeast up over Blood Mountain to Brasstown Bald, up to Hawassee, then lunch in Murphy NC. Shopped a little at Cherokee Cycle, then up to Rt. 28 (Hellbender 28) along the Nantahala River to Deals Gap. A little more shopping, then rode The Dragon up and back again, then down to Robbinsville, then west on the Cherohala Skyway to Tellico Plains, south on Rt. 68 to Blue Ridge, and then home. What a great day, but I'm feeling it a little today. The RSV did awesome in the thousands of twisties we hit all day. I never even had to get out of 2nd gear on the Dragon, and it just glided in and out of the 318 turns it throws at you in 11 miles. This is where you really appreciate the leveling link mod the most. And the Cherohala is just a fabulous ride all by itself. Gonna do that one again next month. Worth the trip from anywhere.
11. Has anyone ridden or know anything Honda's NC700 ? Due to the numbness in my feet and lack of strength after loosing 130 lbs I have dropped the RSV several times lately due to it being a little top heavy. I believe I need to get a smaller bike to keeping riding since my wife does not want to ride any more. There is the NC700v & x models and they are suppose to get over 70 mpg. tew47

13. i went by a motorsports dealer to look at the new canam rt touring model. they had a gray one there that really impressed me. linda and i sat on it on the show room floor and it really surprised us how comfortable it was, even with the rider foot pegs. we were there about 1/2 hour and was never aproached by a salesman. i really want to ride one. we went home and i priced one out on the canam website. it was right at $29,000 for the limited edition. i figured up one without all the goodies and it came out about $22,000. way out of my range, but i just have to get a ride on one. curiosity is killing me.
14. Sometimes a ride is just a ride, and occasionally it means more than that. Enjoy: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/08/06/1117354/--I-am-in-Awe-of-my-Wife-Jodie-picked-the-Title
15. Took a scenic ride this morning b4 all the rain & was IMPRESSED..took 100 west then 96 south for about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile then turned on Harding....this twisted and looped back to Leipers Fork then we took 96 back to 100... wished we had taken some of the other side roads. It was GORGEOUS ride..then the rain set in about 11:20 and we sat it out just lazed around. planning on leaving early so we can take some side roads going back....
16. Well, I got off my butt and put the bike on the lift yesterday. Put the stock leveling links back on, tightened up the neck bearing. That took a half turn to snug it up! Then I went ahead and pulled the fairing loose and pushed the forks up 3/4". Plugged the ais system. Took it for a quick ride yesterday and a 55 mile ride into work this morning. So far, Very happy with the saddle height. I can touch flat footed sitting on the bike and have my knees bent. When I stand up I have about an 1 1/2" clearance. Me likey. The bike haandles much better at low and high speeds. Seems like I can turn a tighter radius. Me likey that too. AIS plugged. I know some are against it, but for $1.28 for the 2 rubber stoppers and the 15 minutes it took I figured why not. Pretty much eliminated the popping through the exhaust. I run 29" Samson turnouts. It may even be a tad quieter without those gases burning in the pipes, I could be wrong though, but could just be because it does'nt pop like it used too. I do have a small exhaust leak and need a new doughnut gasket. Once I replace those, I do not think I will get any popping at all. Me likey likey.
17. A friend of mine invited us on a ride to Kerstings Motorcycle Museum in Winimac Indiana. My friend described how he and his brother in law stumbled on this place quite by accident, this trip was designed to end there. Links" http://www.kerstingscycle.com/muse.html http://www.teamchicago.tv/Kersting's%20museum.htm It was a nice ride, if you like bikes, this museum is awesome. No venture in the place but it was awesome seeing some old and unusual bikes.
18. Monday... so if any of you fellow riders are in the area and would like to meet up let me know. was a great ride up we dodged the rain and it was PERFECT weather to ride, about 1/2 way up we stopped and put on a jacket and it was just right! we saw between 75 & 100 turkey's no lie & 7 deer...
19. I have the Chatter Box system with the open helmet mike. I got tired of having to replace the foam covers because they either got lost or got chewed up for opening and closing my modular helmet. I ordered the mike cover for a full face but it didn't fit the open helmet mike. I finally got fed up and made my own mike cover. I made the talk into side red so I know which side to turn towards my mouth and I made they other side black so it would kind of blend it the helmet. The black side is elastic material and the red side is a shear polyester material. Here is what it looks like. Ride Happy, Ride Safe
20. Took a Vulcan Voyager 1700 out for ride at Detroit Bike Week today. VERY nice bike. I think it blows the Venture away in handling and ride. Real nice dash. Gobs of power. Man when you bang second gear, yikes, she takes off. Makes me think about a new bike.
21. For something a little bit different go to my profile and open my album. This is a ride I took with my friends in the Utah British Bike Club in July just after the 4th.Great guys great bikes and beautiful scenery.I hope to have my BSA 500cc Royal Star running by the time this ride rolls around again.
22. I swapped the risers and my rsv bars for the rstd. It was an easy swap butt now i have a qiestion. Upon full turn the plastic cable supports just touch the tank, has anyone had this issue? On the rsv bars the cables are on the outside and the rstd the bottom. Upon my initial ride it feels much better to me than risers but now I need a long ride for a full opinion. I know my hands are outside the fairing protection but I may buy or make some handlebar deflectors if I like the feel of this on the long haul.
23. While I have learned a ton of great information about my bike in this website it is the friendships that have come to mean the most to me. I have been needing to get out and spend a whole day of just riding and TDunc who I meet here and have become good friends with needed to do the same. It was great to get together and just spend the day riding. He shared with me some great roads he knew and I shared with him some great roads I knew. We left at about 10am and got back about 11pm. Both of our mental health situations have received a great dose of fixin. How truly special it is to be able to develop so many great friendships and share such joyful experiences doing something we all dearly enjoy doing so much. Thanks VentureRider.Org family. Ride Happy, Ride Safe
24. Charlene and I are contemplating getting rid of both bikes, I hate getting rid of the 83, but she doesnt believe she can ride it for any great distance, so we are thinking getting a trike, but I have to settle for having only 1 bike and she thinks she can ride longer and be more comfortable on the trike, the only thing is price. It will likely have to be a nice used one, I dont think I can get more than 7500.00 to 8000.00 for both bikes total. So if anyone sees or knows of one up for sale please let me know. I will be looking at Ebay and CL in the meantime.
25. In memory of my Friend,Boss, and CEO of Lloyd Hoff Holding Corporation. 48 years old is to early to take that final ride. You will be sadly missed. Prayers for your wife and three children left behind. http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m580/ggrabose/BenOval.jpg
