  1. So far, I would say I have a keeper. The bike just 'feels' stronger. She moves easily through the gears. She responds when I twist her throttle. Everything just feels more comfortable. I don't know how else to describe it. I'm getting a little more noise, but I can still hear my tunes... no problem. As far as fuel mileage... First lets agree to limit any comments to the bikes rear end. I know I get bad mpg compared to many of you, but why that is would be another thread. Yes I keep the tires within 2 psi of max sidewall pressure. Changed the plugs... one was a little darker, but not bad. All were dry. I use SeaFoam several times a year. Chokes all the way in. Carbs are tuned regularly by me. Engine runs good and can haul my rear around faster than I have any business going. Maybe it's a combination of being as big 1up as most of you are 2up... of pushing a lot of air with a wide windshield and lower deflectors and a wide body... or flying the two 11x14 flags (a buddy said his mileage went down when his flags went up)... or riding at the speed limit +5mph (real speed, not yama-speed)... or not wanting to waste time getting from 10 mph to 75 mph... or who knows what else. I've fueled up 234 times since she first hit the driveway. I've averaged 31.5 mpg in 31952 miles. I also keep a running avg of the last 10 fill-ups. Over the winter, that avg has dropped from 32.5 to 29.5 now. I say all this so you can decide for yourself if you think your mileage may be affected in the same way as mine. Four tanks before the VMax rear swap - avg 29.57 Four tanks since the VMax rear swap - avg 29.47 Yep... I think it's a keeper.
  2. Hello everyone! I was tinkering with the rsv (1999) putting on a stebel horn, I finished and did a walk around looking at my lights when I found that I have no turn signals or flasher going to the rear. I do have brake lights and all function up front - just not in the rear. Im guessing its a ground but where do I start? Thanks for any help tj
  3. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. Yamaha does not seem to be able to fix it so far. I have an 06 RSV with 30,000km that has just developed a clicking noise in the rear end. It only occurs when the bike is rolled backwards and only when the components are hot. Yamaha has dismantled the differential (rear end) replaced a suspect bearing, checked all the clearances but can not find anything wrong. I told them about the drive pin clearance/lubrication issues (discussed on this web site) however they believe the noise is coming from the differential. They are reluctant to replace the differential becauase they have already replaced two correcting another problem. This problem was not evident until the new differential had done over 1,000km. Has anyone heard of this problem?
  4. Where is the best place to buy REAR brake pads for an 06 RSTD? ---Buzz
  5. I posted a few minutes ago but ended up with a 2nd gen question on the 1st gen forum. I put in a stebel horn, and when finished noticed that I have no turn signals or flashers to the rear, everything is fine in the front- any ideas? I do have rear brake lights - thanks for any and all help tj
  6. I'm looking for tires, mainly Dunlop, & checked the E3 'Radials'. Not much of a choice. Only 3 front sizes & 4 rear sizes. Rear won't work. Maybe I could squeeze a 9 in rim on the rear. 7. Can someone offer advice? I have an 06 RSV. Yesterday I washed her, and when I fired the engine, it was apparent that I had a cylinder down. Turns out to be the right rear. Pulled the plug wire and plug. Plug was wet. Took another wire off and put the plug to ground. It fired hot. Exchanged the plugs and the problem is still with the right rear cylinder. I tested the plug wire cap to ground and got a momentary resistance of around 14K...tried a working wire and got the same result. I haven't pulled the coil yet because it is like 18 degrees outside! I have a hair dryer blowing warm air on the coil in case it got wet, but so far no change. Thanks for any help you guys might have. :confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24:

    First Gen brake rotors

Does anyone have a source for new or oem replacement rotors, that don't cost as much as some of these bikes sell for? Tired of the cracked, warped, mostly marginal thickness, and unsafe stuff on Ebay or other sources that sell used rotors. They are inexpensive but most sellers (my experience) overlook the real condition of the part. Any experiences with the EBC Pro lites on these bikes, or input on any other available replacements? The EBC's are low carbon, less friction according to sites that review them. They are also lower friction , which might be worth looking into for you RSV riders with touchy rear brakes, just a thought. Fronts are good for now, but the rear I think got bent, maybe when a tire was mounted somewhere along the way. I will be removing my rotors from now on before dropping wheels and tires off for mounting. Would be interested to hear how others are managing this issue with these older bikes. Thanks
  9. Hi guys. Well, the old girl developed a clicking sound coming from the rear wheel. I only put around 6000 miles on it since reassembly. I put it on the center stand and turned the wheel and it clicks once per revolution, always at the same place. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions before I tear into it this weekend? 87VR Don
  10. I'm planning to replace the brake caliper seals on my 84 Standard and when looking up the part numbers on Yamaha's website it shows "part # 31A-W0047-00-00 Quantity 2 " for the rear seal kit. I checked Flatout's and it shows the same thing. Anyone know why it shows 2 sets for the rear caliper? but only 1 set for each front caliper. Thanks
  11. I want to turn my rear turn signals into running and brakes lights also. I have searched the threads here and have seen information on installing several available options that require splicing. I would like to install a module that is plug n play and do not want to splice if at all possible. I have found these 2 modules(http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=3861) from kuryakyn. They are labeled to fit different years of the V & Road Stars, but seems to me that 1 of them ought to work on the 2nd gen. Has anybody used 1 of these modules? Does anyone have a picture of the wiring harness for the rear lights on a V or Road Star?

    Rear Lighting

I'm looking to light up the rear of my '99 venture. Any suggestions on running/brake leds or other light bars? Thanks , Jeff
  13. After I got bike running, now the rear shock bleeds off over a 24 hr. period. I went thru almost the same thing before and ended up buying the compressor because I couldn't find any air leaks due to the small volume or air involved. Any ideas on how to find the air leak with such a small amount of air?? Don H.
  14. I was thinking.... what if I lowered the front end instead of raising the rear? What would be the draw backs of doing so?
  15. This might sound stupid but were is the rear master cylin i looked in my repair book but it dosent show its location. I removed the chrome dcover behind the brake pedal but didnt see it is it on the left side maybe? i didnt get a chance tonight to look there yet
  16. No I am not going to run off...I can assure all of you I plan to stay and pester all of you so......I have ordered a new GoldWing 2008 with everything but the airbag. I did this for a lot of reasons......I started riding motorcycles at age 14 when I raced for Yamaha......then moved on to street bikes and the Harley motorcycles.....I rode them for 18 years......then got disgusted with all the problems and started switching to this bike and that one...honda's, suzuki. and several Yamaha bikes including this latest Venture......to me Venture is a good name for it as it was a Venture!! I have had a lot of trouble with this particular bike, I know this is not the norm......but just the same it left a sour taste in my mouth......I fought the dealers to the ground and finally got my clutch basket and rear drive situation settled........now I have a new letter from Yamaha telling me they need to pull the motor and install new gaskets and re-torque the head bolts........this head gasket stuff I thought I left behind with Harley, at least with a new bike.....no I have not hidden this fact I took the letter to Carolina Honda and gave it to them as I am trading Crickett in on the new one. (I am honest to a fault) I like the looks of the Venture....the motor response......and the comfort........but it is a basic bike.......by the time you install this and that and this and that......before you know it......if you keep track.........you can easily put a few grand into making it street safe. I went to Carolina Honda and they gave me a loaner bike that had ABS brakes.......I suppose that above many things helped me finally make my final choice in motorcycles......I even took the bike over to the church parking lot.......took an old cup with me and threw sand on the parking surface and kicked it around and made a mess......then ran the bike through it and hit the brakes........yep I can make it slip and grab and act a little like a squirrel.....but this is an extreme test and under the worst condition I could think of.............on smooth hard pavement.....you are not going to slip a wheel......just hit those brakes front and rear and be careful......it will stop you in a hurry!! So that was one selling point to me, I am getting older........more forgetful.......might be daydreaming one day and look up and oh sh.....T that bumper is awful close!! The lighting on this bike is simply how can I say........the best in the world.......the rear has lights all over it......mine will have an additional spoiler with an LED light on that.......that is a total of about 8 lights on the back....counting the one we are putting on the license tag too...........the front has great big signal lights........huge bright headlights.......big functional mirrors...........a windshield you can adjust for different condtions, and lots of other stuff. But safety was my biggest decision on this particular bike or about 90 percent of it.........the perfect handling and low center of balance is just a bonus, but a very welcome addition. Oh and to all you 1st Gen fellows......I know you all can outrun a 2nd Gen...but can assure you ......you cannot outrun an 1800 Honda mean machine motor......the first couple hours I played with it......I really had no desire to see what happened over 4000 rpm........last day taking it back I pushed it up there a bit......this thing will run .......way more power than I will ever use.......but is nice to have. Kit
  17. I have been toying with building a 40 watt stereo amplifier (2x20 watts) that uses the bikes fader control to control the amplitude (output) of and converts the rear speakers from mono to stereo on the RSV. Actually I have built the unit and I’m happy with the results so far but I may try and reduce the size of the unit. All the bikes electronics remain intact and work as advertised; this unit only provides contollable stereo output to the rear speakers using the bikes fader control. If you turn the volume up on the rear speakers using the fader control on the bike you increase the amplitude of the rear speakers and visa versa. The base and treble control on the bike will control the base and treble on the front and rear speakers. The unit will fit behind the access panel of the trunk, which is located behind the passenger seat. You have to tap the front speakers and run wire to this location. If you don’t have volume on the front speakers you won’t have volume in the rear. The big problem was to build the circuit so you could not overload the input by turning up the front volume. You also have to run power and ground from a switched feed for power to this location. You can use the stock speakers because the power output is only about 11 watts actual per channel and the stock speakers are 14 watts. I can increase the output of the unit to about 100 watts per channel and still keep the size down so it will fit, but if I did this you would need to upgrade the rear speakers. I have been in contact with a company that will build the component and enclose it in a watertight enclosure but the price is a bit high I think. In order to get the price down to what I consider reasonable I will need to order 1000 of them. At present I am trying to get the price down to $130 to $150 delivered in the states. I don’t know that I can do that and keep the quality of the unit up. At present the unit would sell for about $180.00 plus shipping. So before I continue searching for a manufacture that will give me a better price I want to get an idea of how many people would like one. Also what do you think of the price? Thanks for you inquiries and input.
  18. Here are some pictures from Cougar of the new Polk speakers that he installed on the rear of his RSV. He confirms that they will fit but that you have to remove the black ring that came on the stock speakers.
  19. Anyone have a blown rear shock off a 2nd gen laying around? I'd like to get some measurements off of it. I'm trying to replace the weak rear air shock with a standard spring and hydraulic shock.
  20. Here are some pictures from Cougar of the new Polk speakers that he installed on the rear of his RSV. He confirms that they will fit but that you have to remove the black ring that came on the stock speakers.
  21. Is this normal? When I change the sound system to the headset setting, I hear the music over the speakers in the rear. It is not very loud, but enough to hear it clearly. The headsets do work when plugged in, but can still hear the sound out of the external speakers. Is this normal? No sound out of the front speakers in the headset mode.
  22. Your thoughts please? This is a serious matter. Rear tire load capacity varies by make of tire but lets say the average is 850lb. If a Yamaha venture weights 800 lb how much weight is riding on the rear tire? Now at 70 mph the front end gets lighter so does more of the weight transfer to the rear? Add a 250 lb rider and 150 lb passenger now what do we have on the rear? Fill the saddle bags and maybe 25lb tongue weight for the trailer. Is it possible we are overloading the rear tire load rating?Yea I know put the rear on a set of scales when loaded but how much extra weight at 70mph? Not complaining just thinking snow on the ground and nothing else to do.
  23. I'm not sure on any bike but my 07 if yours is not like mine then I don't know what to Tell you, but my rear speakers are Stereo. I got bored again so I decided to take a look at the rear speakers again. Now if you look at the wiring diagram for the audio circuit you will notice that they only show one rear speaker along with the two front speakers. It struck me funny that anyone would build a stereo amplifier for the two front speakers but only incorporate a mono circuit for the rear two speakers. So I decided to tear the MCU apart and take a look at this to see If it was possible to add another rear output. Well I know what your thinking, why would someone tear their MCU apart. Well I didn’t need to because while tracing the wiring for my rear speakers on my 07 RSV I discovered that it has two outputs for the rear speakers (a left channel and a right channel). That’s correct the 07 has stereo rear speakers. I don’t know about any other 2nd Gen but I would think they are all the same but I don’t know for sure. I traced the wires from the MCU to the front and rear speakers and I have attached a diagram showing the wire colors. I have also attached a few pictures showing the 18 pin MCU connector in the front fairing ( all four speaker wires run through this connector) and the two speaker connectors (one for the left rear and one for the right rear) under the passenger seat. I then made an MP3 file with sound on the right side and then sound on the left side to test what I found and even though you get some sound in the right rear speaker when there is no input for the right rear it is minimal and I think it’s just feed through from the MCU. The same is true for the left rear speakers. What you hear in the front speakers is what you get in the rear speakers if it’s stereo in the front it’s stereo in the rear. I was under the impression that the rear was mono, not true in my case on the 07. wire color code: Left Front Speaker ------Red/white + Left Front Speaker-------Gray - Right Front Speaker------Red/Black + Right Front Speaker------Blue/Black - Left Rear Speaker--------Red + Left Rear Speaker--------Brown - Right Rear Speaker-------Red/Yellow with a gray Strip + Right Rear Speaker-------Brown/Black - Am I wrong?
  24. There is a spot just above the ser.# on top of tranny that has #'s scribed in it with two arrows, one pointing to rear and one to the left. Do's anyone no what they mean?????????????Denny:)
  25. My 1987 is looking pretty good for a 20 year old bike. However it has a few areas that show it's age. I have several cars which I keep in top shape, and I think it is time to get my VR up to par. The biggest issue is the aluminum in areas seems to have a haze or oxidation on it, with the rear footrests being the worst. The trim around the front fairing and rear saddlebags also seems to have some along with the trunk rack. I only see a few small spots on the engine, but I am not sure what the best way to address it is. The brake and clutch reservoirs do not look good and probably need to be replaced. A few of the emblems have started to discolor a little, while others look new. The paint is in very good to great shape. The seats are in perfect shape, mainly due to me using Aerospace 303 on them. I've made a commitment to ride it a little more often, and when I take it out, I want to with all the pride a 1st Gen deserves. So what say you, oh great bike waxers of the forum?
