  1. Hi, On my 86 VR, the CLASS white plug connector appears to have a problem. When I turn the ignition with inserted key to ACC, the CLASS monitor will come on, light up w/the normal wording, and then display only the "PSI" lettering in the upper right corner. I may or may not get an error message; however, I am unable to adjust the air pressure. Then, if I open the CLASS door panel and push and/or press on the CLASS white plug connector, the monitor will continue to reactivate and finally stay connected long enough to allow me to adjust the front and rear air pressure. Do you think the problem is in the white plug itself or does the circuit board connectors that the white plug connects to need to be resoldered? I hate to talk bad about my 86 VR; however, as advanced as this bike was in 1986, you would think Yamaha would have come up with a better CLASS electronic connectivity design. It seems kinda cheap compared to the rest of the bike. Don't mean to upset anyone, just my opinion. Anyway, let me know your thoughts and past experiences concerning this question. Thank you, Allen Dallas, Texas
  2. Anyone have any experience using a Champion RA6HC plug vs. the NGK DPR8EA-9? What about the Autolite 4163? This is for my 88 VR?
  3. Hi. I am wondering if anyone knows how I can find out a bolt size, thread size, etc. The part number is 90153-10015-00 and it is the fill plug from my rear brake reservoir... I took it out this evening, and dropped it when it came out of the hole... can't find the dang thing anywhere! Thanks!
  4. Seems like this shouldn't be too difficult, but I am having a terrible time trying to loosen up the timing plug on my 83 VR. Any tips? I tried fitting a nickel into the slot, fit well but ended up bending the nickel instead of backing the plug out. Appreciate any help!
  5. Where is the fuse located at for the 12volt accessary plug on the left inside fairing? Also what amp is the fuse?
  6. I got the CB, now I need to insert it and plug it in I guess. I see in the manual (MKII) that the CB is in the bottom and the CLASS is above it. I can see how that would let you still have the coolant bottle there. The hole where the CLASS is looks too big to put the CB into. Is there a totally different plastic cover that goes there? If so, anyone got one? (MasterGuns?). I also see the plug-in coming from it. Should there be something on my wiring harness for this to plug into? Or does this go directly to the left handlebar controller with the PPT? I do not have one of these either, will need to obtain one. There looks to be a bracket or something that two bolts go into on the CB. I don't have that either. Is there a place that would have the 5-pin cable (I guess 5-pin) that would go from the CB to the amplifier? I know, I am in a small world of hurt. Help?
  7. The microphone socket on the drivers conector/cable from the tank to the radio isn't working. The other aspects of the cable work fine. That is I have sound from the radio I just can't communicate out. However, when I plug into the passenger plug the my microphone works. The driver's connector just doesn't work. I also found that one of sockets for a pin is loose. So I suspect that it is broken inside the plug. The cable is $50 from Yamaha, does anyone know of an inexpensive alternative to Yamaha?
  8. I've done my reading on the CLASS repairs, and after hitting one helluva bump in a construction zone a couple weeks ago, it appears I'm going to have to use the techniques, but I have a couple questions. First, until the bump, it was working great, no E1 or E4 codes. After the bump, an E1 that can be corrected with the plug technique. However, after riding for a while, and the associated vibrations, sometimes it'll keep working, sometimes not. I read about heating up the contacts with a solder gun? Which contacts, how do you get them out of the plug, if necessary? Do I have to go in to resolder any cracks if the plug technique is working to make it work? Thanks guys, Joe
  9. I want to connect my CB and Garmin unit to the accessory plug located under seat of my 07 RSTD. Is there a harness that allows me to wire to my units and plug directly to the existing plug? chachi
  10. Would anyone have the rider (front) helmet cord that connects to the amplifier and wire harnes on the left side of bike (86 Venture). I couldn't get the left speaker in helmet to work and after playing with the plug it will come in but it cuts out when you let go of the plug. If anyone has a spare from parts bike would be willing to buy. Thanks
  11. Well it started out with a plug fouling (right front). I had been messing with the carbs and after the fouling happened, re-synched them( of course they were off). Figured that was the problem. Put in a new plug and off I went. Happened again. Being on the highway helped keep it clean, but definitely not running great. I figure it's one of two things, a carb problem or a firing problem. The coil and plug wire are easier to check. Plug cap came back within tolerances, primary coil readings were ok but definitely on the high side. Didn't get a needle quiver for the secondary (not looking at the manual, not sure if that's the correct name) test. So I am going to assume that it is the coil or possibly the wire. Anyone else have any thought on this?
  12. Well, I guess I'm not gonna find out how long the Dunlop E3 will last on the back of my VR. It's got over 18k with some life left in it, but... WAY back I picked up a nail and plugged the hole with a Monkey Grip plug. I know some don't like doing this, but I've put at least 15 of these in MC tires over the years and the only problem I've had in the past was that they often develop slow leaks. This was no exception; it held air for awhile and then for a long time was a slow leaker - a once-per-week kind of thing. Then on Friday night leaving church it backed up like I was in sand or something. Yup, tire almost flat. Well, traffic was mellow and a station with air was about a half mile down the road, so I rode it slowly down there. Boy, did that feel weird, esp. in corners. Aired it up and was fine going home. Next morning it was flat again. Got out the soapy bubbles and, viola, the old plug quickly grew a little bubble-beard. So I pushed it into the tire and installed another (done this on other punctures, too). Checked the air Monday AM, fine. Rode to work, checked the air, fine. Before I left work I checked the air again, fine. Now most of the time I have the radio going on this bike, playing through the headset. But for some reason, going home Monday, I was just enjoying the quiet ride, the whine of the gears, etc. I had gone probably 17 of the 25 miles home and was on the Interstate doing about 80 when I heard a quick WHOOSH (or was it a HISS?). I made the "tire connection" pretty quickly in my mind, looked around for some other source (kinda like when I fart and look around to cast the blame elsewhere :-), there was nobody around and absolutely nothing that would make a WHOOSH or a HISS. Nothing but that tire. The bike still felt fine but I figured I'd better pull over and take a look. It never handled poorly except for when I had slowed most of the way and pulled across the rumble divots; then I knew. Sure 'nuff, flat as a pancake. Actually, not quite that flat. I learned that the sidewalls are stiffer, compared to the weight, than a car tire as it still held a little shape. Anyway, that new plug I put in was plumb gone. MIA. AWOL. Don't know if it went in or out, but it sure wasn't there where I had put it! So my dad brought my trailer and all is well. I already have a new E3 for it, just wasn't planning on using it quite yet, but I'm sure not putting another plug in that hole. I'll still use plugs, but I think when the tire wears down it's less reliable. Plus, this hole, while a simple puncture down in the carcass, widened into more of a split or cut near the surface. That could have been really ugly at 80 MPH. Thanks to God that I heard the noise, made the connection, and pulled over before things started shredding or jumping around. Jeremy
  13. I have a '92 VR. I removed a plug just to check wear and condition and discovered the plug does not match the number listed in the shop manual for the bike: The spark plug was an NGK DPR7EA-9. According to the manual, it should be an NGK DPR8EA-9. I'm assuming this means the plugs in the bike are a lower heat range...? Would this make a difference in performance, especially start/cold performance. The bike runs like it is firing on two cylinders until it gets warm, sometimes. Should I change to the DPR8EA-9 part number plugs? Thanks, Randy
  14. Hi there: I have an 84 VR and have installed a CB etc out of a 92. The 5 pin cord that goes from the radio the where the driver plugs his headset in has a plug sticking out the side of it half way down. Can someone tell me what is suppose to plug into that? Could it be a filter of some sort? Wayne
  15. To plug a hole in the clouds, so far it has Poured 26 days out of 30 No Garden this year
  16. I got caught in the rain last night on the way home. Had ridden the bike for about 25 miles in the dry, then stopped and did some shopping. When I came back out about an hour later, it was raining consistently, but not too hard, for the rest of the15 miles or so journey home. The bike started up great, but one cylinder was not firing reliably at first. Presumeably this was due to effects of wetness on the high voltage components, coils, plug wires etc. I got underway on 3 sometimes 4. Once she warmed up again, after a few miles, this went away but I am thinking I should probably address this issue ASAP 'cause it will only get worse on its own. As far as I know all my HV components are OEM originals and now are of course, 24 - 25 years old. Not bad lifespan but time to act, I think! So, whats out there and whats possible? What do replacement OEM coils cost? Any aftermarket stuff I should know about? Are the plug wires changeable by themselves, or are they integral parts of the coil assemblies ? Of course the cheapo side of me says AHH just coat everything with silicone grease and go for another 25 years of service. Whats the group's experience here ? Any one got a bike running like this with the old coils coated in silicone grease or similar ? Thanks, I am looking forward to reading your always sage advice. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  17. Hi to all, I recently cheeped out and bought a battery from Advance Auto parts with a copon I got in the mail for my 87' VR. (total cost: $28.00) When I went to remove the old battery the resistor that goes to the plug for the battery fell apart in my hand! The plug into the battery is good and the wire to the resistor is still there. Now with the new battery I get the dredded "Battery Fluid Low" Icon on the dash. Lonestarmedic was kind enough to send me the post on removing the battery fluid low resistor out of the electrical system but I am thinking that since I still have a "wetcell" battery, the sensor would be a good thing. Does anyone know what size/value resistor goes in this circut so I can replace it? Or does anyone have the entire plug/ resistor line that they would like to sell? When Jean and I go for a ride, she keeps looking over my sholder and says... whats wrong with the battery, didn't you just replace it? (like 43 times!) Thanks in advance for any light anyone might be able to shed on this problem. Earl and Jean
  18. I just purchased 2 sets of IMC headsets / mic. When I plug the passanger set in no problem the intercom and speakers sound great. The primary sat however, there is a squelch that would wake the dead. THe noise begins the instant I plug the cord in. I have tried all combinations of cords and headsets. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  19. Anyone riding around in so. cal. north of san Diego give me a yell,I know most all the backroads east of temecula. Cowboy701
  20. Really bad.New plugs and new plug wires.Whats wrong?
  21. Hi, Going to order then change the plug wires on my 83 VR... I could order them from the local dealer, but thought I'd first check if anybody here had any recommendations on brand, or good place online to order them from... Any quick tidbits of advice for making the job quick and easy? Thanks, Clay
  22. Is there anything available? I have a few tapes to listen to but I have to upgrade to something better. You would think with such a great bike, someone would have invented a replacement for the old sound system. I have an iPhone and might try to integrate it in to the sound system somehow. That way I could use the phone and music features. I also saw that the unit says intercom but I have not found a place to plug in headsets. Am I missing something here? Has anyone come up with a way to replace the factory sound system with something a lot better? Any help is appreciated. 1984 Venture Royale 1200
  23. I like the nice connector holder stuck on the gas tank for the headset cord. I wonder if anyone knows where could get another such stick on holder (a smaller one, actually) that I can mount on the other side to plug in something else? -Rip
  24. I have recently acquired a 1989 Venture. I replaced plugs and wires, and replace battery cables as per this web site. I 'thought' I remember that after doing that, my bike would indicate around 14 volts during highway cruising and drop to around 12 in town or idling. Yesterday, my battery seemed a little sluggish on startup and I noticed only 12 volts during highway speeds, dropping to around 10 v in city. During starting, the voltage would indicate 8 volts or less. I suspected a stator problem and looked up the testing alternator by GeorgeS in 1st gen library and I quote: "At the Large White Plug, with the 3 #14 wires comeing from the Alternator: Do the following: Measure the AC voltage on each wire. You can stick the meter probs into the end of the White Plug. ( located just behind left rear cylinder, White connector, with 3 white wires thru it ) With Engine running, you should Read 9 to 15 volts AC, ( thats AC, not DC ) on each wire. If the voltage on " one" wire is substantially , Lower then the other two, then your Alternator is failing. " I am a little confused about the measuring method but here is what I did. I took apart the plug with 3 white wires running into it. I then measured across the matching wires to the 2 plug halves ie wire #1 from female plug to #1 tab in male plug. This was done while the bike was running. I got 17 volts AC across 2 of these matching wires and nothing or very little on the third...I assume indicating my stator is going or gone. Here is the funny thing though. If I reversed the leads on my meter then I only indicated 7 volts AC on the same two wires and nil on the third set. Why would that happen? I mean, what difference if I measure left to right or right to left on AC current? Weird. So, any suggestions? I assume I have to either buy a new stator or is there such a thing as rebuilt stators? How about trade ins? Anybody know? Are there any more tests or things to check to confirm stator is fubared? Thanks.
