  1. No, it never ends. It's a curse that I will apparently just have to live with. I knew this one was coming though. A couple of weeks ago I posted about how the oil drain pipe on the 8HP engine on the lawn vacuum broke and all the oil drained out and it died. About how I did get it running again and how it didn't even smoke and ran great. I wondered how long THAT would last. I now know how long it will last. It lasted until about 6:30 PM yesterday. I was mowing and the vacuum was running great when suddenly there was a loud clanging noise and it quit. A quick inspection was all it took to see the approximately 3" hole in the side of the block. So....that one is done. It was a 8HP Tecumseh. I just found and bought a new 8HP Briggs on Ebay so this piece of crap will live to vacuum another day. And there with another $325.00.
  2. Was over in the Dells, WI yesterday. $3.97 for regular........ Would hate to see what the price would be if the oil companies were making more than 4 cents profit per gallon. And our legislators really raked them over the coals. Wonder if the oil companies provided pillows when everyone got down on their knees to kiss their a$$%.
  3. Hi everyone. Last weekend I put on my punched out R/K mufflers and I absolutly love them, great deeeeep rumble just right!!! When I punched them out I put several small holes on the inlet side baffles, and about six 3/8" holes on the outlet plate at the back side of the muffler if you are looking at the back of the mufflers while mounted on the bike. You can also look straight through the muffler from the inlet side to the outlet side as the center baffles were removed when I got them. Now for my question. I can smell unburned fuel/fumes not only while warming up the scoot but also while riding on my 25 mile commute to work, does this mean that the bike is now running rich and needs to have the carbs ajusted or the bike tuned due to being able to breathe better? I have never had this bikes carbs tuned as I have just bought it in January. However I did do a tune up with plugs, fuel filter, checked air filter, used some marvel mystery oil in with the gas on a tankfull, and I put a fresh oil and filter change with mobil 1 mc oil. It seems to run well I just wonder if it could be running better or if this fuel smell is normal with what I have done???? Has anyone ever run into this before? As always any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You All in advance. Big Mike
  4. Hello, I am new to Ventures and I have just noticed after changing my oil that there is no oil pressure warning, just a level low warning. Hmmmm I find this very odd. I think this is the first vehicle that I have owned without a oil press light or gauge. Am I missing something?? Kim
  5. Does anyone know what size bubber stoppers to use when plugging the AIS? I wanted to go ahead and buy them now so I'll have them when I change the oil.
  6. Hello everyone. I wanted to see if anyone was having the same issue as I am having. I recently changed my 07 Venture over to Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 filter. Upon start-up, I hear an inordinate amount of "clatter" from the top-end of the engine. I don't think this occured to this extent while running the petro Yamaha oil. I'm running 3.5 qurts of 10w-40 Mobil 1. Is this normal or should I switch back to the conventional oil? I'm not looking for a this oil that oil argument, just looking to as "why" my engine is making so much noise for the 30-45 seconds after start-up. THe bike has 2500 miles on it. Thanks everyone for your time.
  7. Do I have to do the 600 mile maint. at the dealer.....or can I just change my own oil & rear end lube???? And, if I do it myself, does it effect the warrenty?? I'll take it in if I have to....I just dont wnt to pay 250 bucks for an oil change!! Thanks.
  8. When you loose a rear shock will it still hold air pressure?( Mine is) Reason asking I know that when you change oil to NOT fill it over the half way mark on window and I am a slight bit lower than that but I have oil at base of rear shock? Thanks,Tom
  9. When I got my 03 RSV I got 4 qts of oil Yamalube 10w30 Non-friction and yamaha filter #3FV-13440-10 is this right for my 03 RSV? I got from owner of bike and dont need to buy any if this is the right filter and oil can anyone tell me. Joe
  10. My son's moped does not seem to be using any oil. It is a 2003 Derby that has a seperate oil tank and then is supposed to mix the oil and gas automatically but the oil never needs to be filled. Sounds to me like this could be a problem eventually. What should I check first with this? Iowa Guy
  11. For those of you who use a synthetic oil, when did you change over?
  12. Just found out, if one of your shift pins in the end of the shift cam come all the way out, and you can't find it in the oil pan or any other easy place, check the filter screen for the oil pump intake!!! Mine came out in Cincy, couldn't shift to 4th, finally tore it apart and finally found it in the screen! I'll make sure those tabs are bent over good before I put it back together, for sure!! Oh well, back to the bike. Dan
  13. I have a oil filter with part number Yamaha 3FV-13440-10 and the one I took off my RSV 03 is a 5GH-13440-00 can I use the 3FV one on my RSV? I dont want to screw things up. The differance I can see is one is a little longer and the filter ribs inside are a little differant. Joe
  14. I just changed the oil on my '84 this past weekend. It went well but I am now reading posts about "overfilling." I thought I was being smart by filling it to its upper limit. Sounds like I was wrong. Do all these bikes have the overfilling issue ? Looks like I will have to take the air breather apart to see if I have oil in there. I am assuming that that is the cover just inside the fuse box cover ? Also, I see a lot of folks recommending seafoam. What is that ? A search on Google suggests there are many seafoam products available. Any recommendations ? As usual, thanks.

    87 Oil brands?

Just purchased an '87, (one owner bike) the guy used Gastrol GTX 20W50 all of the time and changed it every 3k. I called the local dealer to schedule a tune-up/oil change etc... and asked if they used Gastrol oil. He said they NEVER put car oil into a motorcycle and wouldn't recommend it at all. He said I should be using the Yamaha oil and that is what they generally use. The guy I bought it from drove it for 21 years using Gastrol - and everything seems to run fine. Should I switch to the Yamaha brand? I didn't think this would cause that much problem. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!!!
  16. The manual suggests 20W40 or 10W30. I have seen the debate re: synthetic vs. dino and I think I will go with dino. Any suggestions on the weight ? Also, does anyone know if I can still get a filter from Yamaha ? Is this a stock item (because it is the same as more recent bikes use) or will I have to order the filter in advance ?? What about the final gear ? 80W90 hypoid gear oil is recommended in the manual. Looks like I need a special tool to dip down and measure the level. Don't have the tool. Where should the level be ? As usual, thanks guys.
  17. OK, what have I done wrong or not done at all? I am attempting to replace the forks seals in my '83. I have gone according to the tech article and have gotten to the point where I pull (pound) the bottom forks off, and I can't get them to budge. Everything else that was in the article is done. The oil drained, 10mm cap screws removed from bottom of forks, upper assembly and springs, dust caps and retainer clips...but when i try doing the slide hammer technique it is like hitting solid steel. What exactly is it that is still holding the bottom forks on that I am pounding against? I even tried putting a 2x6 on the front axle bolt and pounding on that with a large hammer, but I'm at the point that I'm afraid I'm going to bend or break something. Is there something that was not listed in the tech article that I don't know about? One other thing, well actually two. One, (assuming I ever get them forks off) the replacement seal says: "oil side" on one side and "air side" on the other. Is the oil side the bottom and air side the top? and two: Do you put the new fork oil in the top of the upper tube last after everything but the top tube caps is done? I can pound a little harder if I won't break anything, but already I am raising the back tire off the floor with each stroke. Any thoughts for this old hillbilly?
  18. I am really worried about a leak on my new Venture. I have used the dealership for 15 plus years and do trust them but this problem really concerns me. I picked up the bike in August and on the first few miles I noticed some coolant behind the left rear cylinder. The dealership said that they re-torqued the head bolts and it should be all good. I then noticed some oil in the same spot and it seemed to continue. I basically have oil all over the side stand and drips all over the garage floor. I have never needed to add oil as the level is right at the top of the sight glass. The mechanic feels that there must be something wrong with a gasket as it is not seating properly and because of the slow nature of the leak he said it was OK to ride and he would pull the motor apart over the winter when it wasn't cutting into my riding season. He most recently told me that he talked to a rep at a convention and was told that Yamaha used a new environmentally friendly process for bolt retention instead of something like loc-tite that they had always used and that might be contributing to the problem. My fears include: that the bike will always leak (given this "new" technique") plus I have oil all over the underneath of my bike. I have also heard that over filling the oil could cause blow by. Since my oil level is way up at the top of the sight glass, could the leak be that blow by? Just wondering... Any other thoughts? I am not well versed in the mechanics of the motor and thought some of you might have some insight. sorry for the long post - if you have any more questions I can ask my mechanic... Here are 3 pictures of the left rear cylinder and from underneath. You can see where the oil settles (I have not cleaned the bike for a week so that the pics would be obvious).. http://www.fototime.com/554B44BC04B821F/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/287EB48769D72E4/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/D9E90F19B12FC8C/standard.jpg
  19. Yamalube 10w30 non-friction and filter yamaha # 3FV-13440-10 I got them from previous owner of my 03 RSV can I use this for this oil change? Thanks Joe
  20. I want to say thanks to all replys to my clutch slipping problem. It turns out that there was too much fluid in the resevoir and was slipping when it got heated up. But I also just changed oil the day befor, I dont think that was my problem after checking the fluid level. Im going to bleed it untill it runs clear and not fill it to the top, it is so full could get one more drop in it if I wanted to. And only slips when its warmed up. From what I see asking this next question is a hot topic on here but i would hear what you guys say about it. I want to run good oil in this bike (84 xvz12 with 16000 miles) and yes its the real miles on ths bike! I want to run the best oil I can for this. I love mobile 1 full syn. does anyone run this and what wt. do you run. If it does not do good in this bike, I would like to know, so I dont waste my time and money. Thanks for every ones help, this is a great site and so glad I found it. I love my bike and dont know mch about it. I have alway had a bike and did my own work, but this thing is a beast and so different than most bikes!! Thanks again Larry
  21. Hi there, My only question is what is the best oil to put in my 1 st generation Yamaha Venture Royale?
  22. Man.....that was a long winter. Put a new battery into the bike the other night. Spent part of last night changing the oil, change the rear end oil and have the old girl a much needed wash...that had to put her away as I had other commitments. Rode her to work today- first ride of the season - had a wide smile on my face all day...still smiling! Man those first gens are a sweet ride!!
  23. OK, as some of you already know, I had my 07' in for the "head gasket replacement TSB". They replaced the head gaskets. By the way, the tech stated that one of the bolts was finger tight!!!! Anyways, no leaks from the new head gasket but once they put my brand new motor back together, the valve cover, front, left as you sit on the bike was leaking a bit. I took it back and they had it for a few days and stated that the leaking will subside after a while and that the leak isn't caused by the valve cover gasket or lack of torque on the valve cover bolts, but its actually the Yamaha engine design that oil gets down in some sort of valley or something like that and pools up in the front, left because that's the way the bike sits. They stated the oil "leak" should go away after that oil works itself out. Anyone have any opinions on this and have they had the same issue. I do have confidence in this shop and want to believe him BUT, it didn't leak when I bought the bike:) Thanks for any input. By the way, they also completed the Yamaha TSB on the "lack of grease on the rear hub pins.
  24. Ok, my head is spinning. After the last couple posts I have made, all the replies I have gotten, thinking about a couple different issues I am having/have had with my bike and reading the following posts: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13582 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13218 Among several others... Here are my thoughts... PLEASE pipe in with your thoughts. When I bought my 83 VR (about a month ago), the right front brake rotor was COVERED in what I thought was brake fluid. It was so soaked that the front brake wouldn't even slow the bike down, not to even talk about stopping it. The guy I bought it from told me that it was leaking brake fluid from between the two caliper halves. I thought, 'Ok I will fix that'. I needed to get it passed on state inspection, so I cleaned up all of the fluid from the brake rotor, the caliper and the pads REALLY good and took it in for inspection. It passed fine and the front brake worked great. When I got home I thought to myself, if there was that much fluid on the rotor, the front brake resevior must be low. I carefully cleaned the outside of the resevior, removed the screws and pulled off the cover. It is completely full. I am bewildered, but content that maybe the problem will re-show itself making diagnosis easier. After a couple hundred miles, the brake rotor is still completely dry and the front brake resevoir is still completely full. Now, another issue I am expiriencing is the apparent bottoming out of the front end when I hit normal road bumps. And sometimes cornering feels really wierd (nice description, huh?). I checked the air in the front end with the CLASS system and it seems fine at 14 psi. Now I am wondering if the fluid was folk oil, and if the bottoming out and shaky cornering are a result of either no fork oil in the right fork or uneven fork oil levels in the two front forks. What do you think? Is there a way to check the fork oil level in the forks? How do I add fork oil to the forks if they are low? Sorry this is so long. Please forgive a "newbie". I also wanted to express my thanks to all of you who are so willing to offer advice. This website is GREAT and I am so glad to be a part of it. -Mike
  25. My 84 has had a oil leak sence i got it 1 1/2 ago. seems to be on the left as that the messy side or perhaps itts from sitting on the side stand. but the left pipe is dirtier then the right . grimy on the leftside near the kickstand. there dosnt seem to be oil running down form the valve covers. and only drips after a ride for a while. anyway i was looking for the source today and came across a few thing i was wonder about on the left there is a square rubber cover http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/Venture%20XVZ12/th_100_1060.jpg and under it seems to be a bleeder fitting? what is it? http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/Venture%20XVZ12/th_100_1059.jpg and on the left running along the frame and going up the front is a small metal line? http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/Venture%20XVZ12/th_100_1062.jpg and I also saw what apeared to be a repair to the frame, looks like it to me and has some black paint missing. the right side looks fine http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/Venture%20XVZ12/th_100_1065.jpg
