  1. I don't have a tach and am curious to what kind of rpm's the 06 is turning at 70 mph. tks
  2. How kids grow so quickly I remember taking her when she was 4 and sitting in front of me on the tank of the Honda 750 nighthawks doing 85 mph and saying to me Faster Faster She's not into Bikes Boats or fishing now Just Taking care of The 4 legged creatures
  3. Well I normally don't do this anymore...but I got on a nice slab of highway today where I could see for a few miles in front of me and few miles behind. Knowing on my ride home that I was going to change the oil I decided to heat it up a bit...so I took her up to 115 mph and she was gliding across the pavement like a skater on perfect ice. No wobbles and lots of throttle left. At 115 I decided to shut it down and let off the throttle...she was purring today like a kitten. How high have you taken yours???
  4. Okay, been consistently riding at 65 mph on Interstate to work the last couple of weeks and gas mileage has been around 34 to 35 mpg, 1 up. Also been smelling gas and seeing a spot from the four tubes on the left side. So yesterday tried V7Goose idea of adjusting the floats. This is the first time I have ever taken carbs off of any vehicle, let alone 4 of them. Actually the process was not bad at all, just follow the article Freebird has in the tech section. Got on the phone for a little bit with V7, just to confirm how to measure , thanks V7Goose. Put everything back together, went for a quick run around the neighborhood to make sure the bike still ran. Also no backfiring, have Khromewerk slip ons. Today, going to 2 up at 65 mph, got 40.9 mpg, :cool10: I will try going around 80 mph on this next tank going to work and let you know what the mph is. I do know at 80 to 85 mph, 2up I was getting around 30 mpg. So if I can get 35 mpg at 80 mph, I will be a happy camper. :cool10:
  5. Hey folks, Here we go again! Sorry to trouble you, but I thought I had saved (subscribed) the thread where someone had changed the gears & /Or the rear end in a 1st Gen. As before my Goldwing at 75 MPH ran about 3,000 RPM, these Ventures run about 4,200. Went by the Mama Yamahammer shop today here in Ft Smith and AK shop manager said he has heard of it done but never done it himself?!?!?!?!?! He has one friend that just changed out the rear drive from Venture with a Vmax. BUT here are the ratio's Venture 1st gear 2.600 2nd gear 1.772 3rd gear 1.347 4th gear 1.068 and 5th gear .906 (deadly on the MPG on the interstates ORE over 65 MPH ) V Max 1st gear 2.529 2nd gear 1.772 ** 3rd gear 1.347 ** 4th gear 1.076 and 5th gear .0928 ???? I don't see anything that says we can go from 4,200 RPM to alot lower to get better MPG ?!?!?!?!? BOTH final drives are --- spar gears at 1.775 (not to up on all these numbers) Please, Help me here if I'm missing something. I don't see 31 MPG up to 45 here, ??. OR if you know for SURE someone that has raised his ratio and LOWER his RPM please send me their email or link. Love my Royale, but hate the MPG's. Someone mentioned last week to sysnc the carbs they have been done this year, also cleaned air filter, seafoam thru full tank of gas at interstate speeds (up N dwn), as before 40 MPG at 60-65 and BELOW, over 65 MPH, 31 - 38 depending on the headwinds!!! Last week drove in 25 - 30 mph headwind, 65-75, mostly 2 lanes, only 50 miles of interstate out to where the air could really beat me up, ran out of gas 4 miles from gas station, 31 MPG!!! Wife loved that at 4:am, will never live that down Thankx for ANY help or guidance you may give!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will get pic's of dream bike on site soon as I'm not real good at these computers. (thanks admin or ?? for the smileys) Gary C Arkansas
  6. I have been reading about tires for weeks on the site decided to go with mt90 on front and standard on rear running 40lbs handleing great shimmey at 35 mph gone cannot thank all of enough for this forum:301:2008rsv should have said avon vemons they work graet took off bridgestones
  7. I'm glad I have a strong second gear. Thats about all I get to use down here.Hwy 12 is the only hwy on Hatteras Island and one of the most heavly patroled roads I've been on.No such thing as a little test run here. The speed limit is 35 mph through most towns with some 25 mph limits. A few stretches between towns are 45-55mph and not 56mph. It was fun ridng after dark last night. Some body got pulled over right beside of me. The instrument lights have a bad connection in the dash and my speedometer light kept going off so hard to see the guages. This is the only place I have ever got 44 mpg on the Red Baron. It would be nice to out run the mosquitoes. For now it's practice chuging through town like the harleys do.Not cool getting passed by a moped.

    Rsv Top Speed?

I have a 2008 RSV and I'm wondering what is the top speed? Reason being, I had three GoldWings, one ran 138 MPH, another 118 MPH and the third 108 MPH according to the speedometers.
  9. I pledge my allegiance to the Flag , and to all the BEERCART's in America . And to all the Beer drinkers …… if they can stand , One understanding , that we’re invincible , with liquor and mixed drinks for all ! :rotf: http://www.meangene.us/pictures/BCF1.jpg On a more serious note ..... As a member of Rolling Thunder , on which we have been invited to participate in the NC Salute the troops parade in Raleigh , NC . It has been said it will be the largest parade in NC history . http://www.saluteournctroops.org/ . Here I have mounted my flags onto the BEERCART , rather than the scoot itself . The flag poles and mounts are made of aluminum . The flag poles themselves are constructed out of 1" and 3/4" ID tubing to make combined a schedule 80 rating and still lightweight . They are 8' tall themselves . The mounts are welded to the trailer tongue . I've had the BEERCART up to 65 mph with 25 mph winds (flags rolled and covered) to see how it handled and no significant signs that they were even there . I will not be traveling at high rate of speed with them , only for parade ceremony activities . Just thought I would share this with you since I haven't shared pic's in a while and also if you can , look into this Saturday's event . BEER30

    wind!!

Fought the wind here in S. TX for the last 3 days and am wore down to a nub!! Don't really know the actual wind speed but estimate 25-30 mph straight wind with gusts up to 35-40 mph. Done wore out both sides of the Avons, never put the first mile on the center tho! LOL Also, never have had the wind try to take my helmet off, almost strangled me until I got the shield down! Oh well, all's well that ends well. :cool10: Don H.
  11. As some of you might know, I have recently acquired an 89 Venture and am in the process of getting it going to my satisfaction. On the few rides I have taken so far, I have the dreaded steering head shake. It was quite violent at 30-40 mph if I let go of handle bars, but one hand on the bars and did not notice it. At 65 mph I could let go, but if the tire hit a bump or something, then the shake would start, slowly getting worse if not corrected. Driving with one hand it was not noticeable. Since I needed a new tire I thought that would be part of my problem OK, remove wheel from bike...but noticed that bearings seemed rough. Took the wheel to old biker friend, yup something not right here; both bearings seemed to move at same time. Replace bearings with new ones, replaced with new tire, but when static balancing noticed the wheel would not turn freely. It appears that the spacer that occupies the space between the two bearings was a bit too long. Took 2/1000's off and things looked great, and everything turned freely. Has anyone else experienced this? We measured the depth of a few different bearings and noticed there are a few thous differences...maybe this could be the problem? Anyway, installed wheel and torqued to 72 ft lbs. With no brake calipers on, the wheel would barely get one revolution for a strong spin by hand. I did not like this, and loosened torque to 50 lbs and get about 2.5 revolutions for a good hand spin. I did make sure that the pinch bolt is VERY tight as I did not want things to every come apart. SO, did I do right or wrong? One good thing, most of the steering head shake problem has gone away. There is a bit at 30 mph but nothing like it was, and there is none at highway speeds. Probably new tire helped a lot, but I can't help wondering if that spacer being too long caused a bunch of problems with the bearings...it sure made for rough feeling bearings.I feel good about turning the spacer down a bit but opinions are more than welcome. Sorry for the long post
  12. Just an FYI for anyone wondering about pulling a trailer with the 2nd Gen - I built the cheap Harbor Freight utility trailer a while back for general use and to occasionally haul my dogs (the kit is about $125 with 8" wheels). I didn't do anything special except make certain the frame was exactly square when building it. Up 'till now, I have only used it for relatively short trips locally, but yesterday we decided on the spur of the moment to take a trip up to Oklahoma - no plans to have someone take care of the dogs, so I strapped the travel crate onto the trailer and took off. After 500 miles, I am thrilled at how well this little utility trailer tracked behind the bike. I decided that I would not pull it over 70 MPH, but it pulled so effortlessly that I had to use the cruise to keep from having the speed creep up when on the highway. I absolutely could not tell this thing was there at anything over 15 MPH - and even under that, the only issue was some noise from the hitch rattling when I hit a bump. Even with a fairly stiff crosswind, the trailer was unaffected. This little trailer may be ugly, but it sure is a great deal for the price! Goose
  13. Well it's taken me a while, but I finally figures out how to get this digital camera to take reasonable pictures and resize them so I could post them on here. The first two are what it looked like while sitting in Harvey Rounce's (VR member rounce) garage before I bought it from him. The next three are of it in my storage shelter waiting for spring to get warm enough to start riding again. I still have a little more to add but its getting to be less noticable items. By the way the shelter is made by ShelterLogic in Watertown, CT. A wind about 40 - 45 mph caused the damage you see and more. The end wall is held on with light bungee cords and soft of flaps in the wind until tears out the eyelets or rips the bungee. The structure is set up where trees give it some protection from wind. They put a clause in the warranty stating they can't control the wind and thus wind damage is not covered.

    Speed

I thought I read this here before, but couldn't find it. After instaling my GPS, I've noticed that the speed is diferent. GPS will read 80 MPH and the bikes speedo is showing 86-88 moh? I know the GPS is acurate asI've had it in my car (certified speedo) and it reads dead on. Bike reads 6-8 mph fast? Is this common?
  15. Or at least SPRING. I'm really tired of winter now. I know that some of you are getting some really bitter cold right now. Bad enough here, 9 F right now but also 27 MPH winds gusting up to 40 MPH. Makes it pretty nasty. Got just a covering of snow last night and the wind drives it right through you. Picked up a used hot tub a couple of weeks ago and spent all day yesterday building a base to sit it on. Digging 3 ft. deep holes in this ground was not all that much fun. Got it done though and got the hot tub on it. Filled and warming right now and plan to sit out in the 4 degree or so temps this evening and ENJOY it. Just need to run to the store and pick up some Baily's for my coffee.
  16. Is everyone out here in Ga.Tn,Al ok we have had some toronados ,heavy rain, and straight line winds about 60 mph, We are ok just some big limbs down. Yall check In!....Fred
  17. I'm just getting in from a wonderful 150+ mile solo ride through the gorgeous farmlands east and south of Atlanta. It was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine and strong winds. The temperature hit the low 40s, but the wind chill dropped that another 8 degrees. Of course, that doesn't count for what I call "bike chill", which is the additional 10 degree drop you experience at 75 mph! So, that's a good start to the New Year! I sincerely hope and wish for a healthy, joyous, and prosperous 2008 for all of my great friends on this forum, those I've met and those I haven't met yet! Terry
  18. As you may know, I just purchased a new Venture. Reading the manual, it says to not over rev the engine during break in. "Avoid prolonged operation above 1/3 throttle (0-600 mi)" "Avoid prolonged operation above 1/2 throttle (600-1000 mi)" Yamaha recommends some crazy shift points. 1rst to 2nd - 13 mph 2nd to 3rd - 19 mph 3rd to 4th - 25 mph 4th to 5th - 31 mph That's crazy! I couldn't imagine shifting up at such a slow speed. This engine seems to run much smoother at a higher RPM. I did a bit of research on engine break in. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm They recommend the opposite of what Yamaha suggests. How did you go about breaking in your new engines? I'm interested on your comments and or recommendations. Bob
  19. When I purchased my '86 VR it had a K&N filter in it. I have no clue if the carbs were adjusted after it was installed. I've complained about it before, but for those that aren't up to speed on my problems, I can't get over 95 MPH regardless of gear and THAT has to be going downhill with a good tailwind. generally my top end is around 85 mph. My gas mileage is crappy, generally around 31 miles per gallon. All other possible problems with the bike aside, do ya'll think that there's a remote possibility that replacing this K&N with a stock air filter would fix my performance problems? If so, I can pick up a filter on my way home today and see what happens.. I just want the opinion of ya'll first 'cause I'm grasping at straws at this point.
  20. Is your speedo different? Is it KMH up top (printed) and MPH below in the LCD part? Or is it the reverse like the US model.
  21. No it was on my First Gen, but it was still a thrill. A friend of mine took me up in his "Experimental" plane today that he built himself. It is a beautiful two seat powerhouse that was a blast on a Sunday afternoon. We made a low pass back by the airport at over 200 mph, it was a blast to see how fast the ground moves past you at over 200 mph.....
  22. My 86 Venture Royale has been tuned up and the dealer balanced the carbs. It seems to accelerate very well but dies off quickly as it approaches 90 mph. The maximum speed is about 95 mph. I ran cleaner through the engine which improved the acceleration but still no top end. Can defective carburetor diaphragms allow the bike to run smoothly, accelerate well but have no top end? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  23. Hi... I am a new menber with a new 06 venture. I have just turned 500 miles and I notice a clattering noise between 50 and 60 MPH, it is at it worst at 55 MPH. Does anyone if this is norml or is something out of ajustment? Thanks Hydraulicman

    Electrical fires

If you smell smoke when behind the windshield of a 1st gen.....Consider that it's not the 18 wheeler in front of you and investigate. As a side note. If you reduce your speed to below 40 mph while 2 foot flames are shooting out of your dash, you won't burn your chin. I wonder if I would have smelled it sooner without the full face helmet on.
  25. When cruising down the road, everything sounds and feels great, until I get to 70 MPH. From 70 mph to 80 mph it feels like the bike is beating itself to death. Over 80 mph it smooths right out. Put in a tankful of Seafoam, changed the spark plugs and wire caps. Changed the oil and filter and synced the carbs. Replaced the fuel filter last year. The only solution I can think of is it probably needs a valve adjustment. According to the manual, it should have been done at 26K and I have just over 31K on the bike. Does this sound right? In reading the manual it is a job that I don't think I can handle by myself. Any and all suggestions appreciated!! :confused24: :confused24:
