  1. I'm trying to find new brackets and clamps for the vance & hines longshots on my 03 roadstar. I can find lots of places that sell the whole setup, but I only need the header clamps and the mounting brackets (rusted from previous owner) the pipes are still fine. Help.
  2. I saw a picture somewhere of how someone had reinforced their trunk to prevent it breaking... but I can not for the life of me find that picture again. My cycle did not come with a trunk so I bought one off ebay and had to buy the mounting rack also, because they had cut off the bolts on it. Would it be enough to just use big washers in mounting it?
  3. The 5 gallon aux tank has been received, fitted, and mounted. My 3 gallon aux tank is now boxed up and ready for the next owner that wants to extend their riding range. This tank is a cylinder 8" dia x 16" long with a vented gas cap. It has the fuel line fitting already installed in the bung, an internal baffle, and comes with mounting straps. You can see the design at www.tourtank.com. The mounting used on my Venture was on a shaped board that was bolted to the passenger grab rails (need to remove the pillion seat). Easy to plumb into the main fuel line. All you will need is the mounting board, (4) U-bolts, (4) 1/4-20x1.5" bolts with insert nuts, fuel line, inline fuel filter, a ball valve, brass T-fitting, about 6 feet of 5/16" fuel line, and (6) hose clamps. It works well with gravity feed so no aux fuel pump is required (therefore, no electrical wiring at all). All these components can be purchased at any auto parts and/or hardware store (except the mounting board - you will need to make that - I can provide a pattern). This 3 gallon tank will extend your range about 100 miles depending on your riding style. I am entering some Long Distance riding events this year and needed to maximize my range. The max fuel load allowed in Iron Butt Association approved events is 11.5 gallons (5.9 in stock tank + 5 in new aux tank is close enough without going over). There is an ad in the classified. Ride safe, Ride long. RR http://2000rsv.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Misc/1000702/530232780_kAXFy-S.jpg
  4. I saw in the Iron Butt magazine that a high position is preferred for auxiliary light mounting. They said that a high position allows the light to reflect off objects and back to your eyes more effectively. Mounting lights on the mirror stalks or reservoirs is the way to go, they say. I saw the Denali LED D1 Lighting Kit review show up, and checked them out. They would seem to be perfect for mounting up there... small and sturdy. But how? Anyone mount lights up near their hands? Dave
  5. Well, my 5 gal aux tank arrived today, my Russell Day Long seat arrived last week, completed all the maintenance (other than a Carbtune and brake fluid flush), and am ready to start the riding season. The aux tank fit beautifully on the 3 gal mounting board. Need to pick up a brass fitting and some fuel line at Fleet Farm, but other than that, the ride is gtg. I did find with the aux tank on the pillion seat, I couldn't get the trunk open. However, I removed the passenger backrest and could get the trunk almost to the locked open position. Just need to put some bolts with rubber washers in the mounting holes and I will be done with the tank mounting. I will post some pics this weekend. I am ready to go burn lots of dead dinosaurs! With the aux tank, should get 350 to 400 miles per fillup. Sorry, I'm rambling. Time for bed. RR
  6. Does anybody out there have a pair of mounting brackets for the driver backrest? I'll also need the bolts and stems for them too. You can give me a price or if you need a part for a first gen then maybe we can trade outright for them....
  7. OK Ive read a FEW threads on mounting the XM antenna on the bikes..Has anyone found the absolute best place to mount the ANTENNA for XM?? Pictures if possible..ALSO Is it worth it to get the Weather subscriptin also..does it show radar maps??
  8. Broke one of the bolts for mounting the drivers seat today. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Any help would be appriciated.
  9. I am hoping to tap into the brain trust here once again. I have been working on mounting the passenger arm rests I got from Snaggletooth. I have got that part figured out (photos to be posted later), but, when I tried to put the saddle bags back on, the "posts" were a tiny bit short. I am at work right now and was wondering if there is any adjustments to the length of the mounting posts that go into the slot? Thanks in advance. Dave
  10. Got my notification that my 5 gal aux gas tank is on its way. WoooHooo. Should provide 350+miles between stops (IB rules state you must stop every 350 miles for certified rides - however, not rallies). The Russell Day Long saddle is also in the big brown truck. Should be a good weekend (if I can get the bike back together). Once the tank gets here, I will see how it fits on the current 3 gal tank mounting board. If it doesn't fit, I will post the 3 gal aux tank with the mounting board for sale and make a new one for the 5 gal unit. If the 5 gal tank does fit on the mounting board, I will post the 3 gal for sale with a mounting board pattern only. If you are looking for 100+ mile extended range, keep on open eye for a post on Saturday. RR
  11. Hello my friends another question about tourpack mounting, I am wanting to maintain the quick release system, I do not want to butcher up my oem passenger backrest. So what alternatives are there? I will be mounting a Roadking tour pack, if I can figure this out. If you are one of the guys who has already figured this out and is selling please let me know ASAP so I can get the Tourpack ordered. Norr3mi@aol.com 309-620-2855 thanks everyone/.
  12. Has anyone mounted the stebel horn inside the fairing. How does it sound in there.
  13. In the following ad, the scoot has caliper mounted lights. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/mcy/1653768301.html So, the question that has always puzzled me about such a mounting is.... wouldn't the bouncing of the wheel cause the lights to appear as though they were also bouncing, not to mention the vibration factor on the mounting bracketry. I'm sure many have seen an on-coming semi or other vehicle with their driving or fog lamps on and the things are obviously jiggling like crazy just from the roughness of the ride and the flexing of the mounting. Thoughts/comments on this?
  14. I perchased my 2000 Venture in the biginning of January. It made it here about 3 or 4 weeks ago (to New Orleans), and during the ride, it lost the front seat. I talked to the guy who sold me the bike, he told me basically "tuff $h1t". I perchased a used seat from Pinwall Cycles, but they sent me the back seat. They have a strict to return policy, but they were very nice, and just made me pay for shipping. After all of that, today on the 16th day of March... I finally rode my baby to work... It was great. The seat doesn't have the mounting hardware, but it's good enough for now. I'll head to Home Depot after work, and maybe I can get something to work... I don't care, it's gorgeous outside, the bike runs great, and I'm gonna have a great week.. If you guys could feel my joy!!! I'm :dancefool:at work...
  15. I'm replacing my stock CB/Radio antenna on the VR with a Firestik . I looked at the new antenna and of course it has a male end. So I want to replace with all new from the antenna to the CB. I see that I will need different parts to hook this up. One end of the old coax has the plug in type of connector (like on a car radio antenna wire)at the CB and the other end has the old mounting unit built right on it. Where can I get coax with the plug on one end and the screw on connector at the other end by the new mounting stud? OR ----- can I cut the old original mounting end off and put on a new screw on connector for the mounting stud end for the new antenna?
  16. Finally got a decent day to work on the scoot! Mid 60s today and not a cloud in the sky. Ran some errands (only about 40 miles) and then thought might as well install the Ajure halogen passing light bulbs. A side note, got tired of trying to hold the inner mounting rings in place. So being the redneck that I am I enlisted the help of the good ole Yellow 3M!!! Won't see it anyway, but they ain't flopping around in there. Now just waiting on dark to see where they are pointed.
  17. Thought I'd drop into a couple of our local Yamaha shops and see what was available for windshields (other than stock). Like a wider one and maybe a bit shorter than stock. So, I asked the question.. "What options do you offer for windshields for a Royal Star Venture?" First dealer: "We have a few different ones but you also have to buy the mounting hardware." Me: "What mounting hardware? The windshield bolts to the existing fairing bracket." First dealer: "For what kind of bike is it?" Me: "A 2006 Royal Star Venture" First dealer: "Let me look" ... she goes through a couple catalogues muttering about the brackets and then says "We don't list anything for 2006, only 1996 thru 2001 for a Royal Star" Me: " I said Royal Star Venture.... they are made from 1999 thru 2010 and are all the same" First dealer: "Well, I don't list anything and you'll still probably have to buy the mounting kit" Me: "Forget it!" and I walked out. Second Dealer: (I asked the same question but spoke with a sales rep) "Yamaha sells one. I'll get a printout for you" He comes back and sure enuf, it's a shorter, wider one... to the tune of $288. Me: "What about non-Yamaha ones...??" Second Dealer: "I don't think anyone makes them ... and if they did, the quality just wouldn't be there." Me: "OK, thanks" ... and I leave. geeeeeesh! What the heck is the matter with these people around here... they just don't cater to the "touring rider" by offering much of anything in the way of accessories for the RSV, let alone knowing much about them it seems. I remember several years ago when I had my '85 Venture I had to go to a Kawasaki shop to get a new "non-Yamaha" windshield and a pair of Jardine mufflers coz the local Yammi dealer "couldn't get them".... it must be that Yamaha is very restrictive as to what their dealers can / can not sell.
  18. This may have been covered before and I missed it, if I did, I apologize. Anyway I am thinking of adding fishtails to my bike. Already have Barons slash cuts, so I thought that maybe a cheap set of fishtails might be fun. Can't get much louder! Checking into the JC Whitney fishtails, i found that they are smooth pipes with no rearward mounting brackets at all. Are they ok to run just mounted to the headpipe only? You could use a "P" hanger bracket of some sort, but wouldnt look that good. If anybody is familiar with em I would appreciate hearing from you.
  19. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=300373641644&view=all&tid=399301566020 Someone mentioned that a Goldwing driver's backrest fit their first gen so I nabbed this one hoping their right. Everything looks identical to the one I had before. Except for the mounting hardware. But I already have that. I'll let you guys know if it doesn't fit.
  20. I just received my camera, where/what method is the best ? has anyone tried the helmet mount or helmet staps ? Cb
  21. I've got a couple things from my '86 VR that I'm going to try to sell, problem is I have no idea how much they're worth. I was hoping you guys could provide some info. 1. Set of Air Deflectors with mounting brackets, good shape to be from a 23 year old bike. No discoloration and only minor scratches. 2. Driver's back rest with mounting brackets. Very good shape only issue is slight fraying in the leather where the back rest mounts on the bike. I've looked on ebay, but I can't find either of these things listed to get an idea for a price. Thanks for the help, Mick
  22. While trailering my bike to Ft. Myers I noticed when I was just south of Tampa that I noticed in the mirror that my passing lamp bar looked like it was about to fall off of the bike. I pulled over and checked and one of the mounting screw heads had fatigued and broken. So I wire tyed it to secure it until I could get to Ft. Myers. So great, now I get to hunt up a new bolt and hopefully I'll be able to get the old one out and replaced in the parking lot of the condo. As I neared Ft Myers I recalled that there was a Yamaha dealer just off I75. I called ahead and the service department was open on Saturday until 5:00. I stopped in and asked if they had a bolt. The service mgr found a bolt and gave it to me. I suggested that they install it, after al l've got this five year warranty. He said that if he did that he would have to write it up and there would be a $45 minimum charge. I said fine, send the bill to Yamaha. They must not sell many Ventures because he seemed surprised at the warranty. Anyway, he took my vin number and wrote up the work order. I left the bike with him and went on to store my trailer and about an hour later he called and said the bike was ready to go. They replace both mounting bolts. I was thankful that they were able to get it fixed so quickly. I wasn't looking forward to fixing it in the parking lot. DT
  23. I have a trunk from an 83 or 84(I think. It's smaller than my 85 trunk) that I'd like to get rid of. It's got a crack on the right side of the lid, and it has been outside on my picnic table for a while now. Missing the lock, and I don't know what else hardware for mounting it. Free to whoever wants it, just pay shipping. I don't need it, I got it when I was trying to find all the parts for my 85. Let me know!!
  24. Hey all, I purchased a new 6 disk cd changer on ebay for my 06 venture but the thing doesn't have instructions on how to install it on my bike. It looks to have the rubber mounting bracket to go in the side compartment. anyone know where to find some detailed instructions on how this mounts? Thanks!
  25. I got myself a Stebel Air Horn but did not wish to place it where the factory horn was located , nor inside the front fairing like most others . The fact that inside the front fairing muffled the optimal decibels that the Stebel air horn provided . Relocating it in place of the factory horn allowed optimal decibel sound on the right side of the RSV, but not on the left side . I wanted equal amount of sound on both sides of the RSV, so I searched numerous possible location as to where to mount the Stebel air horn . I looked towards mounting up in front under the triple tree on the front forks , but not enough clearance and bad idea if the front forks were fully compressed . I looked towards mounting under trunk , but did not want the navigator to jump up and disrupt my driving if I were to suddenly blast away , if you know what I mean . So, I looked towards the underside of the RSV. And to my observation , there was enough room behind the lowers and along side of the oil filter to where a large enough cavity was located to mount the Stebel air horn . I made a mount simply out of 1/8” x 3/4 “ x 2 ½” metal strapping . Using the exiting mounting bolt on the Stebel at which I believe was a 1/4” diameter by 1”, I drill a 1/4" hole on one end to secure to the Stebel horn . I drilled a second hole 3/8” measuring from center of the 1/4 “, 1 3/8” to center . Pictures 1 and 2 show how I made the bracket. Note:You may want to pre-wire the horn mounting as I did by making pig-tails with plug-in terminals as you will have to remove the horn during oil changes. As you see in picture 3, a 14mm acorn nut that is connected to a bolt which passes through the frame . I removed the acorn nut and removed the bolt. Taking that bolt and passing back through the 3/8" hole on the new mounting bracket on the Stebel horn and placed it back into original hole and re-tightened the bolt with the orriginal acorn nut . You will want to maneuver the horn to where it does not make contact to any other part of the RSV, especially the oil filter, then tighten down the bracket . In pictures 4, 5 and 6, you can see that the Stebel horn does hang down lower that the driver’s floorboard brackets , but not as nearly as much that the motor’s oil pan . I have not had any issues as of yet going over obstacles such as trailer loading or curbs, but do take precautions at the least . I also used the air tube inlet that was provided with the Stebel air horn and routed the opposite end up and behind the lowers to not take in water during rain or road wash. Wiring the Stebel, I used the relay provided when I purchased the horn. I mounted the relay under the right side battery cover. There are numerous threads on how to wire up the relay. I chose to go connect the main power to the relay straight to the battery and ground it to the frame. To activate the air horn, I connected the factory horn terminals themselves. Therefore I did not have to monkey around running longer wires, nor adding more drain on the RSV’s wiring. Muffinman was gracious enough to supply the terminals tome and I cannot remember the correct name of these. I have seen at the auto parts store. These terminals have 1 female with 2 male blades on them, which allowed me to both connect the factory horn wiring and the wiring back to the Stebel horn relay . I have been running my Stebel air horn in this location for almost 6+ months now. Placed over 3K miles on the scoot even through major rainstorms. By mounting the Stebel under the scoot, the horn itself is projecting it’s blast towards the ground, echoing the 138 decibels equally on both right and left sides of the RSV. The Stebel horn has not taken in any water to cause malfunction as of yet and with the horn itself is pointed to the rear, it does not scoop up any rain or dirt. Plus I still have the factory horns as well! BEER30
