  1. I just bought a 83 VR a few weeks ago and have been running through the little problems a 25yr old bike has. Main one was the starter (Wooo Hoo that was fun, twice, rubics starter from hades, lol ) Just finishing off some wiring issues on the accessories that wern't up too par for my liking. Now... Ive looked as best I can but can't seem to find the sending unit for the fuel lv. My guage is up and down with the wind. I count my km's but that flashing red light is making me crazy. All I hear is "fix me...fix me", lol I'm sure it's just a bad ground but Waldo seems to have taken it and gone underground, lol. So.. if anyone has seem Waldo and the ground plz let me know..Thanks Knees In The Breeze
  2. This isnt trying to spark ANOTHER debate. you all know i am new to this and i finally got bored enough to search for pictures of a First Gen. I saw a picture of someone sitting on their seat and took a picture of the controls. I swear the first thing that popped in my mind was "ground control to major tom"
  3. So far I've made 125 of these... 1st Generation mostly, but some apply to all models: Replace bolts on muffler clamps & use anti-seize compound before they freeze up Do the starter internal ground, another post. May not need heavier battery cables. Add a ground wire directly from the starter to the negative battery terminal or main ground wire Add gauges if unsure of reliability, most on Ebay are Oil pressure, oil temp, Amp meter, indicator LED lights to remind if accessories are on/off An external oil plug is on the engine right side with large socket allen screw/plug between water pump and clutch covers down low center engine. Shorten the throw on clutch lever by making a shorter push rod Shorten the brake lever throw by removing the return spring (remove 10mm bolt to see) Clean battery and grounds regularly Super glue any plastic cracks, also stops further cracking. Do not over tighten any screws on plastic Install foot guards for rain & cold air (MK1's) Always put bolts/screws back in with grease/oil on threads to prevent corrusion Put a guard around the mirrors in case you drop the bike Replace any frequently removed nut/bolts/screws with all the same kind to reduce tools and time servicing. Use a socket screwdriver rather than a wrench/rachet, it is faster & you don't over tighten. Put a mud guard around the rectifier/regulator, but leave it open to air Eliminate both/either fairing pockets (Std models) this adds 50% more room. Use insulation to fill in holes. Rubber around mirrors to protect them Make sure the air filter is tight (not rattling) in housing The weather stripping on the bottom goes bad with age Further explanations are available via PM's. Happy fixes!!!
  4. And bolts. Whats the best thing to loosen rusted and frozen nut and bolts?? I use Parts Blaster. Is there anything better? Other things get frozen sitting on ground trying to replace wheel bearing in this weather.
  5. Hello all, I am considering having my seat shaved on the Venture and was just wanting to hear from some people who have had it done. The bike fits me pretty well but i would like to have my feet more flat on the ground and was wondering how much this helps. I guess a few of my questions/concerns would be...... How much does it cost? Does it effect the comfort of the seat any at all? Is the foam shaved off the top off the seat or the sides, or both? Who on here does it and how can i contact him? I lowered the bike with the Barons rear lowering kit and it really helped alot and didn't have any negative effects on the bikes handling but it still wouldn't mind my feet being just a tad more secure on the ground. If shaving the seat will affect my comfort on long rides then i don't want to do it because as i said i am really ok with the bike, but if i can get my feet on the ground better without sacrificing any comort then i would like to have this done. It's way too cold to ride here in Ohio and i'm thinking this would be a good time to do this mod. I would apprciate your responses on this if you have had this done to your bike. You can reply here or just send me an email here on the site. Thanks in advance.
  6. Not sure I posted correct place - I thought there was a "other" bikes category . . . ? Wondering if you have any experience installing/using accent lights or ground lights on your BMW for "accent" or safety reasons and your opinion. I have the BMW RT & was wondering where to put them. They worked great on my cruiser. Not sure how or where they would fit because of the fairing?

    Bow-hunting ground blind

Am looking to buy a good ground blind for bow-hunting. I shoot an Oneida bow and need the interior height to be at least 68". Anybody selling one, or know of where one can be had for less then an arm or a leg? Thanks
  8. I know there are a lot of us "midwesterners" that have gone to Briebacht's in Balltown north of Dubuque IA. It was the oldest bar in Iowa and overlooks the Mississippi River Valley. Last Christmas, it was burnt to the ground. They rebuilt and the business was bigger than ever. It is a favorite spot for bikers to go to. Anyway....just got a call from the hubby...jumped on the Dubuque newspaper...and it burnt to the ground this morning! We were just over there a few weeks ago, and the owner was so proud of the new place. If I remember right... the first fire was electrical or in the kitchen...but a second time in less than a year? I just hope it isn't some nut out there with a vendetta.
  9. My horns are stock and are not working. Both wires going to the horns are hot. Shouldn't one of them be a ground? Thanks for any help. Jackie
  10. this one is puzzling me, since I changed to a new battery, my temperature sensor is acting erratic, I think it's electrical, poor ground maybe????,.... my old battery was always demanding a 16V charge, but the new battery, at idle is around 13V, at that time the temp indicator goes off-scale low ( reads less than zero), as soon as I rev up, it jumps to 1/3 scale, where you would expect it to be....... as soon as you come to rest it goes low again, and from time to time it jumps around 1/8" while riding,....I checked the manual, and it gives the location of the temperature sending unit..... can anyone tell me where the physical location to the ground is ???? JOHN ( or any other thoughts on the subject:confused24:
  11. I have a 07 venture . i have been looking into tow bars that attach to a trucks hitch and tows with front wheel off the ground. Anyone tried this rig and is it ok with the shaft drive?
  12. BOO

    Hey Moose

Chuck Ole buddy I hope you are in the basement. There is a tornado on the ground and headed for where Chuck lives. 1/2 mile in diameter and been on the ground for some time. I'm thinking about you, hold on, Jerry
  13. ...But I could only find 168's. The light bulbs. Will 168's work in place of the 158's? Also, if my dash is still dim, where can I look for possibly a bad ground wire or whatever?
  14. Today 04-12-08 THE NAVIGATOR and I were out riding with a group on a charity run and I was in 3rd gear going about 45mph and needed more power for a swift maneuver and kicked my big 2nd GEN into 2nd and twisted the throttle, Well the front end came off the ground and shocked the heck out of me and THE NAVIGATOR as well as the guy and his kid on the tour glide classic next to us. I did'nt know the 2nd GEN'S could do that cause there so heavy and would never try to bring her off the ground in fear of ripping the front end out. But she came down gentle and we were off to the races when I hit 3rd gear.. Man this is a sweet bike and the HD riders where impressed they did'nt think a big bike could do that. Thought I would share this info. What a beautiful day it was today.........................................Ron
  15. O.K. I figured out why my battery is showing such low voltage and then hight voltage on the dash volt meter. The back brake light is not always going off. I am trying to make heads or tails out of the manual but I can not seem to find where the switch is for the brake light. I need to know where the pedal sensor is and the grounding point for the circuit. It appears that both the handle and the pedal cause a drain on the system and the light stays on most of the time after I let off the brake. After several giggles or a few jars on the road the light goes back off. I am wondering if it is a ground issue rather than a switch. If I knew where each of the switch parts were and where the ground connection was, I could try some more troubleshooting but I can not tell from the manual. Anyone else had a similar issue?
  16. This is just a note to say that I hope all our members in and around Missouri are doing OK. With the severe flooding going on there, I hope you are all on high ground. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
  17. Yup they got here yesterday afternoon, so it was time to fire the bikes up, and let them idle for a couple of minutes, still have snow on the ground and a weeks worth of mud to deal with after that,
  18. Hi. I posted this in the Electronics section, only got one response (thanks RPG). I was wondering (hoping) if maybe it didn't get seen over there and there is more input to be had. I have a noisy audio system. It's happens on all sources (radio, tape, intercom, CB) and is detectable in the speakers but worse in the headsets. It appears to be a noisy power issue. It changes pitch with RPM, and here is the thing I find strange: it decreases when the bike had additional electrical load. Brakes or driving lights cause it to go quieter, and the blinkers do just what you might expect, the noise gets quieter-then-louder...etc. I figure I'll check the ground on the system, as well as the ground on the factory noise filter. Do noise filters go bad? Any other ideas? Thanks, Jeremy

  20. Can someone offer advice? I have an 06 RSV. Yesterday I washed her, and when I fired the engine, it was apparent that I had a cylinder down. Turns out to be the right rear. Pulled the plug wire and plug. Plug was wet. Took another wire off and put the plug to ground. It fired hot. Exchanged the plugs and the problem is still with the right rear cylinder. I tested the plug wire cap to ground and got a momentary resistance of around 14K...tried a working wire and got the same result. I haven't pulled the coil yet because it is like 18 degrees outside! I have a hair dryer blowing warm air on the coil in case it got wet, but so far no change. Thanks for any help you guys might have. :confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24:
  21. I Installed new Freeway blasters on my 07 RSV, but they are not operating at full volume. This morning I'm going out to the garage to test for ground resistance. and the voltage supply to the horn's. My question is, Where are the ground points on my bike? I have been through the factory manual and can not find that info. Thanks guy's Ken
  22. I just took down a pool in my back yard and I now have a huge empty space. After much thought we decided to extend out current wood deck and add a hot tub. Soooooo, since im much older and more feeble than when I was in my youth, I was wondering...... Does anyone want to have a good old fashioned deck raising party/meet and eat here?? Or am I just beating a dead horse?? The ground area will be prepped and batter boards up before this project gets underway. It's not a fancy deck, just a ground level 14X22 deck, built off of the old deck. Got some white gravel that also needs to be moved around the yard too. Im looking to do this sometime in January. Food will be plentiful.........beverages too...... Any takers??
  23. Has anyone resently tried to purchase Roadhouse pipes direct. I ordered a set for my 06 RSV on 10/5 via the telephone. I got someone on the phone right away, they took my order and told me they were in stock (Moto classics w/ 4" slash cut ends for $ 369.00) and would ship fed X ground from CA to PA appox. 1 week. I haven't recieved and I am unable to get in touch w/ them by phone, fax or e-mail. Anybody know anything about them I don't ??
  24. I just read some posts on 'Winterizing' our scoots, and am clear on all concerns except one: Having the wheels off the ground. Now, I don't have any such equipment that would allow the raising & holding of my bike, a few inches above ground so that its wheels aren't making contact with the ground, and I was wondering if it would be all right to place a length of wood beneath the wheels so that they aren't contacting the concrete floor. Please inform.
  25. I have the Harbour Freight 40x48 trailer. I put the ground in the spot that they said to (right after the hitch). I still don't have lights. I have correct power all the way to the 4-way from the bike. Still no lights. All I can figure is that th ground is not grounding. Is there a better way to ground?
