  1. Noticed yesterday I had some oil on the motor and today started to look for the problem. Looks like it's coming from the long upper crankcase breather cover between the cylinders. The crankcase vent mod has been done but does NOT seem to be coming from filter or connecting hose. In the service manual I cannot tell if there is a gasket or not. I see they are supposed to be tightened to only 7.2 ft lbs. Anyone know if there is a gasket before I mess with it. ALSO. For some reason my oil sight glass is BLACK, can't see through it at all. Just last week it was clear. Oil has not got many miles on it. Is there any way to check oil level on these things without using the sight glass? I looked in some older posts and some said to put Seafoam in crankcase to clean glass. How much do you add and how long do you run motor? I ASSUME it has to be drained fairly soon so it doesn't thin the oil to much. Of course the bike has been running and doing great BUT since I have somewhere to ride this Saturday it just has to act up.
  2. Yah! Yah ! I know Beer30 My fish :rotfl:are little,, But by the photo it was difficult to catch the Glass Fish
  3. Got bored and took a few aircraft circuit breakers to the SS bike yesterday now I have NO glass fuses on my bike any more. Take a look and tell me what you think. Jeff
  4. Sorry for the dumb question.... I just changed the oil and oil filter in my 89 for the first time yesterday. The manual said with an oil filter change there should be 4 qts, so I just dumped it in. On the center stand the sight glass is all the say full. Should I empty some out to get to half full on the glass? Thanks!
  5. The passing lamps on my '06 Midnight Venture went out. The fuse is a 10amp/32v glass fuse. Can I use any 10amp glass fuse, i.e. 10a/125v, or does it HAVE to be a 10a/32v?? Thanks,
  6. I finally installed my gauge set from Ponch. The actual install went pretty smooth, and took me about 5 hours. My hat is off to Ponch for his great work on this kit. First, I didn't want my needles to be orange, so I decided to disassemble the gauges and paint the needles black. This turned out to be a hassle, but I prevailed. Upon taking them apart, I broke one of the glasses. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3819.jpg You can't buy the glass by itself, nor did I want to purchase another set of gauges, so I went to Lowe's and bought a small sheet of glass, and a glass cutter. It wasn't easy to do, but I did it, and you can't tell the difference. Here are the gauges after I painted them. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3821.jpg Here are some pics from the install. I won't go into all of the details, as several writeups have already been posted here. Yes, cutting the dash has a pretty large pucker factor...lol. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3822.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3824.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3825.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3827.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3828.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3830.jpg So far, I have no leaks, and everything is working great! Thanks again to Ponch, for making it easier. I made one additional mod that I really had to think about, before cutting another hole, but I went ahead and did it... http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/IMG_3831.jpg
  7. I know what the manual says about this. Stand bike upright (level), check that oil is halfway covering sight glass. I know thats not word for word. My question is how do you make this a one person operation? Right now I have to have one person level the bike while the other gets down to the level of the sight glass. Any other way?
  8. I found a can of 44k at a local auto repair garage. How much should I put in a tank of gas? The garage owner said it was some bad stuff and to make sure I didn't get any on paint, clothing, or skin. He also said if I didn't use all of it not to store in a plastic container but to use glass.
  9. this has nothing to do with nothing, but when was the last time you southern folks, maybe even northern folks or anyone for that matter. had a good old cold glass of milk and a slice of cornbread cooked in saved bacon grease. and you dunked that slice of cornbread in that glass of milk. or just had it with some real old fashion butter. well if you can't remember well that's too long. hot d--- momma i'am back home. peace & love to all best reguards don c.
  10. Those of you who have installed the Yamaha passing lamps may want to inspect the OEM glass fuse holder that is part of the wiring harness that comes with the lamps. I installed these lamps on my 06 RSTD this spring. I just completed a thousand kilometer vacation trip last week and had no problems, but last Sunday on a day trip I noticed my passing lamps were no longer working. The fused power lead was connected to the wiring harness inside the headlight housing so that is the first placed I checked. I discovered that the nylon OEM glass fuse holder had melted where the bottom of the glass fuse makes contact with the lower contact point. Fortunately the nylon fuse holder was tough enough to restrict the damage to the fuse holder housing itself and none of the other wires around it were damaged, but I had to use Channellock pliers to get it apart. I have since replaced the glass fuse holder with an automotive ATO fuse holder c/w weatherproof rubber cap. I also noted that the OEM glass fuse is rated at 10 amps whichs seems a bit high for the two lights that it powers. The red power lead looks a little thin for 10 amps. I have reduced the rating of the new ATO fuse to 5 amps and everything works just fine.
  11. I know this isn't bike related but maybe someone can help me. A few weeks ago my mother passed away and my brother and I are starting to clear up the estate. My mother collected Fostoria and various other crystal and cut glass pieces. My brother and I know nothing about this stuff or how to value it. We spent today photographing each piece and I have uploaded those photos to my web site. They can be seen at: www.traynorphoto.com/momscrystal We know there are some valuable pieces and some that are not. However, we don't know which is which. We are reluctant to send the items to an auction house because we would hate to see a $600 pitcher go for $6. Does anyone have any idea how to find the true value on these items or how best to sell them? Our intent with the photos was to just email dealers and offer the pieces up for sale and ask for offers. We're just sort of overwhelmed by the number of pieces mom had. Thanks, Dennis
  12. One of my turn signal seals was letting some water in. Popped a bulb. The water that got in seems to have rusted the bulb in place. Tried some gentler persuasion - then a bit less gentle with some needle nose pliers after the bulb glass broke. Anyone got suggestions on how to loosen this up to get it out without damaging the socket??
  13. Hello from Ohio Oil sight glass dirty, dealer said it's from wrong oil already replaced all clutch componets, unable to tell how much oil is in crankcase,is there any easy way to clean glass or do I have to replace it as dealer said,if so can it be reached through oil pan? Like my Dad said I'll never learn Tom takingsley@earthlink.net
  14. Okay maybe it's just me being stupid, but how am I suppossed to check the engine oil when I'm alone? Does everyone just balance their bike with one hand and bend over, almost standing on their head to see that little sight glass that doesn't show any oil until the bike is standing straight up and down! Just my personal rant:headache: Surely there is a better way to check my oil.
  15. I trailered my bike to Tallahassee Powersports this morning for the 40,000 mile service. I unloaded the bike and unhooked the trailer and left the bike and trailer at the dealership. I made some sales calls around town and came back at 3:00 and hooked to the trailer again. I started up the ramp into the trailer and in the blink of an eye the tongue of the trailer went straight up into the air and then came down and busted the back glass and damaged the rear of my lincoln aviator. I thought I was going down with the bike but managed to keep it straight. Ruined my day. I can't believe the trailer wasn't attached all the way. But as the saying goes, stuff happens. Could have been worse I guess.
  16. I did my first oil change this week (2005 RSTD). I filled it to middle of the sight glass, started it to make sure the oil filter was full and checked it again. I had to pour a little more in to get it back to the middle. The thing I have a question about is after I rode to work and back the next day, I looked at it again and it's all the way to the top of the sight glass. Is this normal? Should I drain some out?
  17. Hi guys and girls. Have a problem that I was interested in knowing if any of you had ever tackled. I have a Royal Star Tour Classic 1998 with the speedometer on the gas tank. The are some kind of dried up spots on the inside of the glass covering the meter and it really annoyes me (the warden says I am insanely picky to say the least). Have been looking at replacing the glass but before I do this I wanted to know if any of you guys had ever done this. At Yamaha´s spare part list the glass is not listed seperately but I could easily have the glass made. Then again - maybe this is not supposed to be interchangeable and Yamaha wants you to buy a new speedo if the glass brakes for example? Another thing that has crossed my mind is to change the speedo to the digital 2005 Tour Deluxe old Buick style. Don´t know if this is possible but maybe some of you could enlighten me. The speedo being placed on the tank makes it a little akward to look at since one has to look down and therefore off the road and traffic and in my eyes that is something that increases risk of ending up in a accident or rear ending the vehicle in front. God knows that motorcyclists need all the attention and alertness possible in todays traffic. Hope that some of you can help me on this issue and any advice or info is greatly appreciated. Just don´t tell me to get myself a newer bike with the original speedo on the handlebar. Really love my bikes (two 1998 Tour Classics) for the color and that vintage look and I am not about to get another one in the near future - Well - maybe a Venture next spring if the Warden slackens her administration and alertness,,,,,,,,,
  18. Can I replace the sight glass window in the clutch / brake reservoirs ? I have one that is rotted out and the others are not far behind. Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  19. Is there some sort of plastic/soft rubber cover available for the ventures? I noticed I have a small rock chip/hole in my new to me bike, and thought it might be cheaper to put one of those on than to replace the glass on the headlight. Does anyone have them and do they work....or just get cloudy and hard after a short while? Thanks.
  20. Some one asked about repairing a cloudy sight glass on the break reservoir. I bought an old one from Jack off his old Maxim for my Virago. The site glass was cloudy and the mirror mount was broken and here is what I did. To repair the sight glass I used super glue and just coated the lens with it with it laying horizontal when it dried it was clear; not totally flat but good enough to see clearly the level. On the mirror mount I had a set of adapters that go from 10mm left hand thread to right hand thread (for the right side mirror). The piece that was broken was less than half the threads so I screwed the adapter in as best I could and used JB weld to glue the adapter into place so I have good threads. On the left I just screwed the adapter in so both sides look the same. Hope this helps. Rod
  21. Ok Jeff called and asked me to post this question. Can the glass in the left side mirror on the first gen be replaced? Evidently it's cracked on his bike. Margaret
  22. A while back I thought to purchase new lenses for the turn signals and taillight because they were dingy and they would not look good. Then I found Meguiars PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish. This stuff works very well with minimal elbow grease. Needless to say, I am not in the market for new lenses. These things are now very shiny This stuff works on the four turn signal lenses, taillight lense, the clear headlight cover, all of the reflectors, the clear dash plastic, the radio glass and the CLASS glass. I love this stuff and thought I would pass it on to all of you! PS. Do not use it on the windshield!
