  1. Left at 6:30am ct for our vacation. First stop a nice visit with wildhair 39. Great to see the ambassador again. Got here after riding 12 hrs in this heat but it's great to be out with family and friends.
  2. Just got back from a bike trip to Branson Mo and Illinois with my lovely wife. We were pulling a trailer with luggage and “essentials.” Trip spanned two weeks. Got lots of “thumbs up” from people in cars…guess there is something about a cycle on the open road! We had to opportunity to attend an informal reunion with some old Air Force friends we were stationed with in Germany, see some of the sights, and do some riding…then on to Illinois to visit my family and some of my high school friends. On the way back we stopped in West Memphis, Arkansas to visit an old AF buddy I hadn’t seen since 1973. Then another stop in Fort Worth to see one more AF friend I hadn’t seen in about five years. All in all it was a great trip! The trip up through Dallas was 104 degrees…with the traffic, it was really nasty! We ran into rain for about 100 miles from Springfield Mo to the east…then it cleared up. Other than that, the weather was not bad. I had busted my butt to get an American flag the day before we left (mine had started to tatter from the previous day’s ride)…borrowed one from one of our members (thanks, Tom)…somewhere in Arkansas it went airborne! Bummer!!! Got sick three days before getting home…made for a couple of extremely long days! Observations: · If you can physically only do about 400 miles a day (we are senior citizens), a motorcycle is not really that economical o What you save in gas, you more than make up for in motels · Sheepskin cover for the seat was TRULY worth the price! · Will likely take the cage on trips of a 1000 miles or more in the future…when you are the only driver…you are the only driver! It’s like the Cubs pitching staff…there ain’t no relief! · That being said…the ride was great! Stats for the trip are as follows: Total miles 2597.8 Gas averaged $3.449gal Avg mpg 36.3 Total gas cost $245.71
  3. i want to thank all that attended for making this meet a total success. i knew going in that this would be my last meet, and it was the best one ever. had many surprises like b2 dad bringing aussie annie, and quick step. jason, b2 mom and dads son, who is a b2 bomber pilot, and one of my hero's, also showed up with his family. my good friend la was there and looking great. i could go on and on about all my close friends that were present, and many new folks i met. you all made this weekend one of my best ever, and for that i thank you. i hope everyone had a great time, and the weather was great. yes i trailered my bike, and the trailer is now for sale. what a ride it has been. bill
  4. Phil and I got home from Eureka Springs this morning before the temps really heated up. It was wonderful to see old friends and to make new friends. We did have a power issue the last 30 miles. But this is the last ride until fall - we hate riding in the high 90 and 100 degree temps, and the bike is going up on the lift for it's summer maintenance.
  5. *CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE....1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's ! First, we survived being born to mothers who drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle... Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos. Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death! We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because..... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY , no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms.......... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, grazed from our go-kart incidents, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents. Only girls had pierced ears!.. Anywhere else labelled you odd or kinky! We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time... Christmas decorations only appeared in December... Like they should! We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays, yet the threat of a whack from our parents kept us in check. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! (Dad-Cabs didn't exist). Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet! RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT Our teachers used to spank us with canes and gym shoes, or throw heavy blackboard rubbers at us if we weren't listening in class and bully's*//**/always /*ruled the playground at school. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law and gave you a whack so you didn't forget! Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla.' 'Porsche' and 'Mercedes' were car names! We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL ! (without a shrink!) And YOU are one of them! *CONGRATULATIONS!* You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were. PS -The big type is because your eyes are not too good at your age anymore

  8. If there were any justice, it’s about time this happened... YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2010 when... 1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.. 2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years. 3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3. 4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you... 5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses 6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries. 7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen. 8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it. 10. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee. 11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : ) 12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing. 13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message. 14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list. 15. Just got back from Bongobobbys meet and eat at the Hearth restaurant...My son and his girlfriend met us there and met my friends for the first time....We had a great meal and tons of laughs....when leaving my son came up to me and thanked me for the invitation and stated "YOU KNOW NONE OF YOU ARE RIGHT IN THE HEAD".......Ahhhhhh....its so nice that he thinks so highly of my friends...kind of reminds me of what I thought of his friends when he was a teenager... :rotf: :rotf:
  11. Thanks to my friend that sent this to me! One day I had lunch with some friends. Jim, a tall, balding golfer type about 80 years old, came along with them---all in all, a pleasant bunch. When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups, except for Jim who said, "Ice Cream, please. Two scoops, chocolate. I wasn't sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast. "Along with heated apple pie," Jim added, completely unabashed. We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time.. But when our orders were brought out, I didn't enjoy mine. I couldn't take my eyes off Jim as his pie a-la-mode went down. The other guys couldn’t believe it. They ate their lunches silently and grinned. The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Jim. I lunched on white meat tuna. He ordered a parfait. I smiled. He asked if he amused me I answered, "Yes, you do, but also you confuse me. How come you order rich desserts, while I feel I must be sensible? He laughed and said "I'm tasting all that is Possible. Itry to eat the food I need, and do the things I should. But life's so short, my friend, I hate missing out on something good. This year I realized how old I was. (He grinned) I haven't been this old before." "So, before I die, I've got to try those things that for years I had ignored.I haven't smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven’t fished. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead. There are too many golf courses I haven’t played. I've not laughed at all the jokes. I've missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips and cokes. I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for His grace. I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want un-timed long distance calls to the folks I love the most. I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain. I need to feel wind on my face. I want to be in love again. So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart's desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired.." With that, I called the waitress over. "I've changed my mind, " I said. "I want what he is having, only add some more whipped cream!" This is my gift to you - We need an annual Friends Day! If you get this twice, then you have more than one friend. Live well, love much & laugh often - Be happy. SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS including me if I'm lucky enough to be counted among them. Be mindful that happiness isn't based on possessions, power, or prestige, but on relationships with people we like and respect. Remember that while money talks, CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM SINGS!

Had a few friends drop by yesterday for pizza and story telling......thank you Bongobob, Becky, Big D and Little D, Spanky, Buffalo Bodnar , Hoffy and Janice, Pb&j, Adaveturer, Doug, Marcarl and Mecca, Wizzard and shorty (Robin), Motorcycle Tom and Amy, and Rickster and Michelle.....Taters and I thank you for a wonderful time....I wish my home was bigger to invite more of my friends here . We had a grand time...I know about the picture thing, maybe Bobby will post some pics. MY BAD, I DIDN'T TAKE ANY.. Again ,Taters and I wish to thank everyone for the wine and desserts and most importantly the laughs....

  16. just want to put my 2 cents in about folks who defect to other brands that think about abandoning this site. this site is'nt about the brand you ride. it's about the greatest collection of good people on any site there is. i got away from my venture several years ago, and now my favorite bikes are a kaw. 1600 nomad, and a v-star 1300. got alot of friends on this site that i would never abandon. and a very few i could care less about. basically the brand ain't what it's all about. it's the people that make it all worth while. don't ever leave this site cuz you don't ride a yamaha, you owe it to the friends you have to stay on board and enjoy the hours of fun you have with them. it's all about the comeraderie. i belong to the nomad site for my technical info, and have freinds there but i will never turn my back on the great venture riders i have had the honor to associate with over the years. snarley bill:2133:
  17. About 90 miles into the ride back to Houston from the Rockport Maintenance Day, Roxie suffered a catastrophic failure. I heard a loud clunk and felt her die. I pulled the clutch, and emergency stopped on the right shoulder. That was kind of exciting, as Dave P./Just Foolin' Around and I were passing cars and fellow VentureRiders. I turned off the power as Roxie spilled out oil. In fact, I'd left a long trail of oil as I made it to the shoulder. I am thankful for my friends, who came to a stop, and who u-turned to come back for me. We had quite a party there on the freeway shoulder. Kreg/Kbay went and got his trailer, and returned to carry me home. It seems to me that she'd thrown a rod. At least that's what we called it when I turned wrenches in High School. I'm not sure what they call it now, or even if that is accurate on a second gen engine. It looks like she lost most of her oil, and there was coolant in the puddle as well. The oil seems to have come out above the front motor mount. My warranty expires in April, and I am glad it happened now, and when surrounded by friends. Is there any way this is not covered by the warranty? I certainly have not heard of a well-maintained Venture engine dying like this. I only have 55,000 miles on her.   20. To all my VR family just stopped by to drop a short note to wish everyone a Prosperous and Happy New Year. Charlene and I left the cold and still some snow ground of Newnan to visit friends and family in S. Louisiana, weather was great when we got here, visited with old friends and family in the NOLA area then headed up to my sons in Albany, La. Now we have heavy rains for the rest of the weekend. On Sunday we head to Pensacola, Fla to visit Charlene's brother-in-law who is recupping from extnesive cancer surgery. Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year........... !!!!!!
  21. On this day, as I have for many years in the past, I'm wishing you, Jesus, a Happy Birthday. You, speaking for myself, have brought me many things to be thankful for. Walking away from an accident almost 3 years ago with my wife was one of the many blessings you bestowed upon me....and I Thank You. You have also made it possible in my life to have all my friends here. Many of them I love as much as life, and you continue to watch over us and keep us safe. While we celebrate your birth, and look for the goodness in mankind. I want to thank you for all the gifts you give myself and all of us. Just the fact that we are a family here, is more payment than I could ever hope for. To all my friends here, and you know who you are, Thank you for being a part of my life.....and Merry Christmas to all of you. May the spirit always be with you through out the coming year.....Amen

  23. About a month ago we traded the Venture in on a Goldwing. At the time, I expressed that we wanted to still belong to the VR org…a request that was met without any criticism, and I thank you for that. I didn’t think it would be a problem…based on other postings I have seen and the fact that there were all kinds of bikes on our Big Bend trip…without any ill-feelings. Just want you all to know that, I have looked at other sites…in the interest of learning more about the new bike…and to get a feel for what kind of people are out there. I have got to be honest with you…there are no sites or people like there are on this site. Belinda and I have made friendships thru VR.org that I believe will be lasting…regardless of what kind of bike we ride. Gotta tell you, we really appreciate that. Venturerider.org is an extension of Don Nelson…and, whether we are aware of it, or not…the site reflects the integrity, attitude, and demeanor of its founder…another thing for us to be thankful for. Having said that, Belinda and I would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Friends like you are a blessing in and of itself. For our friends that may not observe Christmas, we wish you Happy Holidays…in whatever form it may take for you. So dry your eyes and quit trying to look so humble! Looking forward to our get-togethers in the coming year. God bless you all.
  24. First let me wish you all a very 'MERRY CHRISTMAS" from Taters and myself. I personally want to thank all of you for being part of my extended family. I want to thank the NY gang for putting up with me and for all the help throughout the year with with my annual rally and for their contributions in making ALL our rides and meet and eats a success. (this includes my friend north of the border !). Taters and I have made some truly wonderful everlasting friends here...From all the wonderful people we have met at MD, our rides and m&e's, thank you for being such a joy to be around.. If I have ever posted anything that offended you I am truly sorry, that was never my intent and I ask your forgiveness...Sometimes my fingers type faster than my brain works...Freebird what can I say, did you ever realize the impact you would have on peoples lives when you started this forum? I don't think so...So again "THANK YOU ALL" for being such great friends, for making me laugh when I'm having a bad day, for making me cry when I think I'M going thru hard times, for reminding me what true friendship is all about, and for humbling me with all your acts of kindness toward each other...GOD BLESS YOU ALL...
