  1. Ok, maybe not exactly "stink" but the wife is complaining and don't want to do no riding. I wanted to know if anyone else has had problems with what I can only discribe at en exhaust leak?? I can't seem to see any smoke exactly, but you can "smell" exhaust fumes coming from the area of the Y-pipe. Any advice would be great, becuase like I said, the wife doesn't like to ride now because she says the smell bothers her.
  2. I just bought a 96 Tour Classic a couple of months ago and noticed the "guts" coming out of one of the 4 into 4 exhaust pipes. I think these are stock pipes. I'm guessing this is the baffle. Long thin cylinder with threads on one end. Tried tapping back in a couple of times but always works its way back out so last time I just pulled it all the way out. Will this have a negative effect on engine performance. Seems to be running fine, but don't want any damage. Has a little more pronounced backfire, popping sound when letting off the throttle, but that sounds pretty cool. Thanks for your help. Bob
  3. let me explain: Was coming back on the interstate yesterday on a new to me bike, enjoying the scenery at 70 mph. Kept detecting a burning smell. OK, on a new used bike, so I checked it out but could not see anything and nothing was malfunctioning and the smell went away. I chalked it up to someone burning brush on the sides. Later, I kept getting whiffs of the smell, but I didn't put smell and smell together....Then: BANG Big explosion thumped my chest and scared the whatever out of me, and cars in front had brake lights and were scattering as I started seeing bits of tire all over the road, then bits of sheet metal all twisted, then a cargo trailer that I remembered passing me being pulled by a pickup. Construction material and pipe all in and over the trailer. Now the right fender was torn and mostly gone and at least one of the tires was coming at me! None of the cars around me would let me change lanes to get out of the debris, so I slowed way down and weaved around it. Truck/trailer pulled over, a few cars stopped (probably had debris damage) and I moved on. So if you get a whiff of something burning on the road, "listen" to it and see what might be about to explode in front of you!
  4. I just placed a new event on the VR calendar. After the success of last year's Central KY VR weekend Valerie and I would like to host the event again this year. I know we had a great time last year and met some new friends and we hope to do it again this year. I expect we'll follow a similar format and meet for dinner on Friday evening followed by rides on Saturday and Sunday. And depending on departure schedules we may be able to do something on Monday. Once we get an idea on the number of people coming I'll see what I can do about a group rate at one of the hotels. Here are a couple of links to discussions about last year's weekend and a few photos: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32094&highlight=central+weekend http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36100&highlight=central+weekend We look forward to seeing everyone in May. Dennis & Valerie
  5. Any one else having the clear finish coming off of the forks? 06 TD. right fork - finish is gone. Noticed it was hazy and flaky last time we washed it and, it just started coming off. Clear coat on the left one is hazy and I am sure will do the same thing soon. Had the dealer call Yamaha and Atlanta said it looked like something had rubbed the finish off (It was me when I washed it noticed it flaking). going to see if anyone else has had this before we call corporate and start with them. or just wait for the left one to flake more and before I wash it - take it in so they can wash the flakes off of it.
  6. I just talked top a tire dealer that sells Kumho's, however he doesn't stock the 165/80R15. He talked like it was an obsolete or discontinued tire. Is this correct ?? or is he mis-informed? So where are the Kumho's coming from ?
  7. All- I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas. I have an 87 Venture and had the Carbs rebuilt. After replacing the fuel filter and checking the gas, we placed the rebuilt carbs in. It started up pretty well, but right away we noticed gas coming through Carb #2 (front left side as your sitting on the bike) and also coming out the top of the carbs in two small orifices. What might be causing this, float perhaps? Also, the four metal air vents at the top of the carbs, do they attach to a hose or something? When I took the carbs off there was nothing attached and there doesn't appear to be anything out of place to re-attach. Appreciate your help. Bill
  8. So I'm coming for sure now but I had a few questions. 1. Is this just for the day or are people coming up early? Are there camping spots around, and would anyone want to share one if I came up on friday? 2. Anyone gonna be coming through the eastern indiana, western ohio area that would want to hook up and ride together? (I've never ridden in a "pack" so you would have to forgive my ignorance) 3. Do I need to bring tools? If so I'll have to cage the bike to bring it down, I don't have a lot of extra space in my saddlebags.
  9. I got my clutch brake cover from Renne today. The cover looks great if you do not have one coming you need to. Thanks Renne it looks great

  12. I have a 96 Royal Star has the four K&N Cone filters on top of the carbs and has vance and hines slip on exhaust. I was thinking about taking the baffels out of the pipes and i was wondering if i had to change the jets in it. Problem is when i decel i have a really annoying popcorn sound in the coming out of the exhuast. Any Ideas
  13. You guys using regular or premium? I always get a gas smell in my garage after coming back from a ride, what's up with that?
  14. Just got done removing 16 inches from the drive about 150 yards to the highway. I'm hoping another 5 gallon of diesel will get me through till Spring. Oh yea when is SPRING COMING? Another snow coming Tuesday.
  15. Around the new year, I bought my 2000 Venture. I upgraded from a 98 RSTD. I got it from a dealership in Daytona, but I live in Louisiana. My father-in-law lives 20 minutes from Daytona, and he's doing to drive it here this coming Thursday. I AM SOOOOO EXCITED. After paying that much money for it, and only having to see it in pictures. I should go to work on it FRIDAY!! :mytruck1:The Anticipation is KILLING me!
  16. I have done a little more research on this leak, but still dont know what the cover is called, see the pics. The first one shows the cover, and the second shows where the oil is coming from after removing the cover. I changed the valve cover gaskets a few weeks ago. It wasn't leaking until after I did this. I don't see any oil in the coolant, nor is there any coolant in the oil. Whats coming out of the hole is pure oil as near as I can tell. I'm running BelRay EXL 10-40 motorcycle oil. I don't remember the name of the coolant, but it was orange and wasn't cheap. Is it possible that I have a blockage and thats why it's leaking out of the hole? I have an air compressor and was considering blowing 30-40 psi into the hole where the oil is coming out to see if I can dislodge whatever it is. Or is this not a good idea? Any suggestions would be a help.
  17. I just wanted to say thank you to John (jlh3rd) for starting the adding gauges thread and coming up with this great idea a while back to our 2nd gens. and giving the idea to PONCH for coming up with a full on-board kits as well, Also, thank you to VGoose for his write-up to better inform us on how to add all of this stuff. Freebird for finding the gauge sets that most of us are using ,this is an amazing place that it all came together with folks putting there minds together for this project. forgive me as I am sure there were other folks as well to make all this come together as well. Heck it took me 3 or 4 trys to get my water temp fixed, but now there is no more leak, this was one of my MANY winter projects on my bike this winter , I think I might be almost done with them , still another month or so until I can ride. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU ! And your efforts for making this happen! (sure was an awesome idea to get rid of that wasted space) I wonder how many cassette players are sitting on shelf's now? Jeff

    Mr. Freeman

Freeman You're a 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley. November 11, 1965. LZ X-ray , Vietnam Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter. You look up to see an unarmed Huey. But .... it doesn't seem real because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway. Even after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses. And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!! He took about 30 of you and your buddies out who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise , Idaho May God Rest His Soul. I bet you didn't hear about this hero'spassing, but we've sure seen a whole bunch about Tiger Woods . . . Medal of Honor Winner Ed Freeman
  21. A while ago, we tried to do this and it was funny, so let's try again. I will start out with a beginning of a story and you all add to it. It could be fun. The VentureRider's group were planning a Meet & Eat in Nashville, Tennessee. Everyone in the area was coming to it, including Squidley and Lonna. The list of members who were coming to the event was growing bigger every day, until the big day came when the absolute worst thing could of happen, which was.............................................. Keep the story going now! Yama Mama:big-grin-emoticon:
  22. I have a 2006 RSTD. The front right screw that holds on the tank cover "chrome" is not coming out. It turns, but is not coming out. I can feel behind it, and something rubbery feeling is turning with the screw. What is this? Any idea on how to get the screw out? It was at the dealer, who performed the 26.6K valve clearance service, and they took off the tank. I was going to call Tuesday (closed tomorrow), because they left off the black plastic screw caps from the gas tank bolts. Now I see that they lost three of the little plastic washers from the ignition cover. And this screw looks to be overtightened or something. What is it with dealer service? *sigh* Dave
  23. Let me try this again; I have hot, as in extreme, air coming of the engine. I pulled the exhaust and found a crack in the downtube and collector as well as broken welds on the collectors mounting bracket. I fixed those, reassembled, thought I had it fixed and suddenly there was that wisp of hot air again. Took it apart again found a pinhole in the downtube they missed when welding and reinstalled with new crushwashers. The other gaskets are in good condition! Went to Rome GA, all was well for the first three hours!! during the last half hour both Brenda and I could feel the heat coming up, by the time we got to Fudruckers things were back to normal. On the way back we had no problem going down to Atlanta but halfway between Atlanta and Greenville, it got bad enough that I had to put my legs on the pegs to get some relief. I locked the throttle for a bit and rested my elbow on Brenda's knee and you could feel the wave of hot air rushing up and out between my thigh and her shin. So in short: -engine temp is consistently showing midway in the green. -weather /driving speed is not a factor, -I have a heat problem that comes and goes. I know RandyA says heat is no problem with shorts on, Randy come ride my bike and make that claim. Folks, I would love to hear some options, why would this not be consistent? If it is exhaust should it not be consitently hot? Where might this be coming from if not the exhaust? How do you trace something that is intermittent and burried under all kinds of plastic? I took the darn pipes of twice now for this and I'm gonna have to find the source of this dadburn bun burner, cause it ain't no fun. This is war!!! I know I could argue winter is coming and I currently have a build in forced air heater, so why complain, but that is hardly the point
  24. I can turn on my radio and the control functions just fine but I'm not getting any sound out of my speakers. I switched between SP and HS and nothing. When I plugged in my headset and switched to HS I can barely here music coming through my helmet speakers. All fuses are fine. I don't see anything loose under the fairing which is split right now. HELP!!!!! Thanks in advance, Carl
