  1. I didn't see anybody else post about the big rockslide on I-70 west of Denver. The road is closed both ways. They aren't sure how long it will take to clean up and repair the bridge that now has a huge hole in it.
  2. I am trying to find a good clean holtel to stay at for maintenance day. Found Comfort inn in Elyria. Sounds ok but as anybody ever stayed there? Does anybody have any suggestions for a nice clean place?
  3. Just to give everyone a heads up. As the year is quickly winding down, I will be starting to do some site clean up and deleting a lot of threads that have past their shelf life. Will be leaving the threads that pertain to maintenance issues or good buy sites. But, if you see some of your threads gone, it is simply because of an effort to free up space on the server. Hope everyone had a great Christmas or festive season and wishing one and all a great new year. Russell
  4. I was leading a group of about 15 bikes this last weekend on a fall river/color (late, few leaves left on the trees, this is important) tour and ran into the results of a dumb property owner. I had done a pre-ride the night before, so we were on the road less than 20 hours after it was deemed clean and safe. Rounded a turn on a particularly curvy section (thus, this road is probably a favorite of bikes all summer long, even though I had just discovered it 20 hours before!) and found the ENTIRE LANE cover at least 2" thick with leaves. Luckily, even though I had run the road, I didn't know it that well, and was going pretty slow (leading) and I got on the CB (most riders had CB and we had been communicating all along) because a hand or foot signal would not be seen by other than the one bike behind me and he was already in the leaves! The leaves were dry thank goodness or it could have been worse. After I realized I was going to make it, and the alert had been sent, I looked and saw that the ditch was perfectly clean on that side of the road. Well howdy! How nice of the property owner to intentionally make a road dangerous just so a ditch (that wasn't even in front of the house, but well off to the side) could be clean. In thinking about it in the 36 or so hours since, I have come to the conclusion that this owner did this intentionally, putting the leaves in the road right after a curve to wreck some motorcycles or less likely, to slow and wreck some cars. He almost succeeded with our group, but since I was slow to begin with, only one bike without CB had a wiggle and everyone made it through safe. I was embarrassed, even though there was nothing I could have done to avoid the situation that I could think of, short of pre-riding the route 10 minutes before, and even then it wouldn't be a sure thing! We were single file, at a very reasonable speed, below the speed limit, and spaced pretty well. Those things saved us some skin and chrome I am sure. One last thought, I am tempted to call the county police and report this homeowner. I am sure there is some rule about debris being thrown on public roads. I own a bit of property that fronts a city street, and won't throw grass clippings or leaves on the road or over the curb. I see this all the time in the country though, and it ticks me off every time, even if I am in a car, because I am always thinking bike safety. This happened in Illinois, any Illinois police (or other police) have thoughts on reporting this property owner?
  5. Can anyone tell me where I can get a Carb jet kit for my 86 Venture. I just got the bike and want to clean the carbs and replace the jets.
  6. A lot of you folks seem to backyard mechanics like I used to be, so... My wifes 01 Nissan Altima's window washer thing is plugged. Someone told me a long time ago that you can't use a bread twisty to clean them anymore, nor a welding tip cleaner, because it will ruin them. So, how does one clean them? Or do I just have to replace it. The one on the passenger side works fine, so I know the pump, etc is okay. craigr

  8. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the throttle side switch housing that came off of a 1983 Venture. This switch is from a Venture without cruise control. The 1983 to 1985 models should be similar. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. I would recommend removing switch from bike if you perform this cleaning. There are a number of small springs and ball detents that are very easy to lose unless you have a large well lit working area. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the clutch side switch in another thread. Picture below is of the switch detailed in this PDF file. 38774.pdf
  9. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the clutch side switch housing that came off of a 1983 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. It is fairly lengthy, 37 pictures, but thorough. I would recommend removing switch from bike if you perform this cleaning. 10. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the front and rear brake switches and the clutch switch that came off of a 1983 Venture. The switches should be the same for the 1983-1985 models. The switches detailed are from a Venture without cruise control, switches from cruise control equipped bikes are different. Cruise control equipped switches will be similar to the 1986-1993 switches shown in another post. The pictures show the switches completely removed from the bike. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch and the Clutch side switch in other threads. 38771.pdf
  11. Well, we started our trek from San Antonio to Floresville this weekend. We should be moved by next weekend. Then clean the rent house and turn in the keys. Watch out Big Shell - we are in the neighborhood. JB
  12. What a great weekend. I love it when a plan comes together. Next weeked our 16 day rifle season opens and I had a butt load of things I had to do and some things I wanted to do. Everything went well including changing from the mower on my JD to the snow blower. Last year not so. I had to clean up my DR leaf and lawn vacuum and put that away plus clean the mower deck and the mower. Also wanted to get in some fall turkey hunting as it was the last two days and yesterday I killed a nice 13.5 lb Jake and it was the best eating bird I ever had and I've shot about 40 birds since they opened it up here. After a great dinner I went on a nice ride as the weather was great for this time of year up here. All and all the weekend couldn't have been any better. I just hope next weekend in a good one.
  13. I am in the process of installing cruise control on my 1983 Venture Standard. I have purchased almost all of the items I need to do this upgrade from ebay. Prior to installing the parts, I will be disassembling the ones that I can and cleaning them. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the front and rear brake switches and the clutch switch that came off of a 1988 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. The switches detailed are from a Venture with cruise control, switches from non cruise control equipped bikes are different. These switches may be very similar to 1983-1985 Ventures. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch and the turn signal switch in other threads. 38049.pdf

  16. I was reading through a thread a while back about this Power Enhancer product.. On their site they have a "store finder" which was for naught because of all the 14 shops I called, none of them listed on the site ever heard of the product.. BAH.. I hate that.. So I found a lad online selling it and bought it.. I fired off an email to the company complaining how bogus their store finder was etc.. Many people stated how impressed they were with it etc.. using the 44K to clean out the carb system and all.. most likely works better than Seafoam as I think Goose stated he noticed a yellow tinge to the floats when he adjusts them. I got a phone call this morning from the local BG rep who got my email response and took time to explain to me about their products and what they can do and what they can't do and what he can do to help me out etc etc.. He also stated that the BG products aren't usually SOLD in the parts dept of the stores, but it's a service sold at the service dept.. that's who you have to ask to get it.. I explained to him about using 44K to 'clean the junk out' of the carbs and fuel system.. He stated that 44K is expensive.. you can use it once a year but follow up 2 or 3 times a year with their supercharge products which is a lot less expensive.. the 44k will blast away the junk and the supercharge will keep it clean.. On top of all that, he's going to set me up with a proper cleaning solution of theirs specifically to run through the bike to properly clean out the system. Most likely do the same thing as some people do with just straight up 44K but this formulation he mentions is a cleaning solution for that task. So I'll keep you informed on how it works and so on.. I just thought it interesting that he would call to set me straight about the store finder thing.. but then get into a full bike discussion using their product.. On a 22L (6 Gal) bike tank of gas, he recommended using only 1/3 of the can of 44K to do the job. I mentioned that some people run a quick burst of 44k through the fuel feed line as a super cleaner.. this is where he mentioned about doing me up a proper formulation for cleaning.. Though 44K is a cleaner, a powerful one, there's something actually better.. After I've gone through my initial online cans, I'll know where to go to get more.. just 3 miles down the road from here.. guh. When you put this stuff in your car or bike, you won't see the improvement until the next tank, after the junk had been cleared out.. then after that you should actually see a 10 - 20% improvement.. The older the vehicle, the better of course.. Interesting info..
  17. I guess another big question I have before I purcahse a RSV is service after the sale at the dealership. I have narrowed it down to two dealers in my area out of three. All took me on a tour of their maintenance shops; two were well organized and clean and one was anything but. How have they treated your bike while in for a service? For example: Is it usually a good experience because the job was done right and returned in decent shape? Or is your Bike covered with oil and handprints? Scratched or dented? Left out in the rain? Used your bike as a demo? (not funny--heard of this happening) Fixed right the first time? Maybe I am too picky because I like to keep it clean and in good running order.
  18. I have noticed this bike in the driveway and thought I should stop in and introduce myself and Ventureriders but it would appear I am too late. It's a clean looking bike and I'm thinking it's a good deal. It looks like he's missing the trunk. For what it's worth... http://stcatharines.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-touring-Still-available-as-of-Sept-19-1984-Yamaha-Venture-XVZ-12000-W0QQAdIdZ150331358
  19. I have notice that my right muffler has a carbon buildup (black sut)at the end of the muffler, any ideas of what is going on? The left is clean.
  20. Hi, What do folks use to keep the visible portions of the first gen engine cases clean and presentable looking? I have cleaned mine on occasion but its a job I don't like much, so they get pretty dirty each time before I'll do it again. They are very grimey at the moment. Generally, I use soap and water and a tooth brush. I have used carb & brake parts spary cleaners but my conscience nags me about environmental issues. Is there an easier & safer way? Spray on, hose off & go for a ride is the kind of thing I had in mind. I don't think she'd like the pressuer washer though. What's the best way? Thanks, Brian H.

    Sea-Foam for Lawn Mower

From the various comments on maintaing the fuel systems on our bikes, you guys make Sea-Foam seem like the 'Hadicol' (sp) of the 50s. If it is that great, have you ever used it to clean out your lawn mower (push type, not riding) in the spring time?

  24. Didn't wash the bike the whole time we were gone... Needless to say it had layers of bug splatter on it. We've washed and washed the thing, but I there is still some area's on the paint that just don't want to come clean. What would be the easiest product to use to get rid of it? Thanks Deb:think:
