  1. Hello all. This would be my first real post here. Turns out I need some parts or advice. What a way to start off, heh? I have a 83 VR. Mk1. (Is that correct?) Two of the carb slides are giving me issues. It seems that they have separated. On one, the plastic slide has broken apart. The other was intact, so I just pressed it back together. Should I worry about the reassembled one? Is gluing the other back together feasible? I have all the parts. I have gathered these are quite expensive, and not that common. If I have to pay dealer prices, just two would be almost what I paid for the bike! The breaks look clean and very recent. Any ideas how they broke? Did I cause this? Funny thing is, I had her running before tearing into the carbs. Would not idle, but ran none the less. She sat for a couple of years non-running before I came along. Should I post a WTB somewhere? THANKS IN ADVANCE Michael
  2. My bike felt sluggish so when it was cold I started it and sure as heck the front right cylinder was cold so I took out the plug, which is almost new and I use only iridium plugs, and checked for spark and had it. I am wondering if there is an easy way to clean out that one carb and not pull the whole Assembly, I always use seafoam and marvel mystery oil so I do not understand why the carb is plugged. Tom
  3. Hello, I have an 85 Venture Royale I picked up in pieces. Unfortunately the previous owner was nice enough to drop the carburetors off to get repaired and they were completely disassembled (a few torn diaphragms) and cleaned. Unfortunately, they were never reassembled and the gaskets inside the fuel bowl were removed and the fuel bowl o-rings were trashed. The bodies of the carbs look great! They also look like a crazy jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing. By the time i buy new diaphragms and gaskets think it may be cheaper to get a set off EBay roughly $300.00 for a used set. However they are mostly second Gen 1300cc carbs. Question 1: Did they change the bore size of the carb along with the displacement or did they just re-jet the carb? Question 2: Can you swap the carbs from the later years to earlier Question 3: Anybody just have a set of carb for a 1st Gen for sale, or maybe know a guy? Thanks in advance -Ben
  4. Oh look another spark plug/carb thread. I have searched and could not find anything conclusive. So here is the scenario: Bike has been sitting for about two weeks while I waited for the rain to clear out and for Rick to do is magic on my seat. I put in some SeaFoam (about 6 oz) at last fill-up and prior to letting it sit because I wanted to clean the fuel system some more when I got the chance to ride again. Put the seat back on last night and decided to take it for a spin and top of the gas (took 1.8 gallons). When I started the bike no issues however as I rolled on the throttle there was hesitation and what sounded like misfires until I got the rpms above 4K. This got a little better as the engine warmed up but never went away entirely. Got back home and let it sit for the night. This morning, with a very pleasant day ahead, I decided to ride the bike to work. Again bike started fine but same symptoms as last night. So as I am leaving from a stop the engine stumbles and as I twist the throttle the hesitation is there but it will accelerate just not really that quickly. If I hold a constant throttle at anything below 4K rpm there seems to be a surge folowed by a miss. Now if I apply the choke the surge/miss goes away but throttle response gets very sluggish. My gut feeling tells me this is a carb issue but I think I also need new plugs as the ones in there were in a very rich condition for over a month worth of riding. Recently, Skydoc and I replaced the carb diaphragms, installed the needle valve shim mod and tuned the carbs with a carb sync and other sundry adjustments. I have run plenty of SeaFoam through the system so advice other than add SeaFoam please. When sitting ( not under load) bike revs fine. Any advice is welcome.
  5. Well here is a continuation of bringing my scoot up to my standards of performance. This weekend Skydoc and me performed the following: 1. Carb diaphragm replacement (21 years and 30K miles) 2. Needle Valve Shim (Interested to see how much this can help) 3. Carb sync 3. Clutch diaphragm spring upgrade (because I was getting some slippage) I can honestly say I was shocked how much the carb tune-up helped. No vibrations at idle and silky smooth cruising down the highway. Overall throttle response is much better (probaly because the carb were so far out of sync). I suspect my fuel mileage will increase too and I am anxious to see the results from a month of driving. I will report back. The clutch spring upgrade will have to wait for an honest assessment as I need to get my seat to Rick for modification and it is raining and will do so most of the week. I want to personally thank Skydoc for cruising down and helping me get a handle on some of my gremlins and for teaching me a thing or two about the black art of carbs. This forum is blessed with so many great folks and I am honored to be a part of it.
  6. Yet again I turn to the experts on this board for help. The problem I'm having is driving me NUTS!! Here goes - 86 Venture 1300. I had an overflow leak from the left front carbuerator the last time I rode my bike. It leaked steadily under power and with the choke on - not idling unchoked. I assumed a "gummed up bowl" on that carb . and because I've never had them cleaned - I decided to pull them and have them done... I took them to a local guy - he has a "ultrasonic" cleaning tank he uses and is a very busy mechanic so I'm hoping his work is not the problem?? I get them back - put them on - hook up the overflow tubes on top, tighten everything down, choke and throttle cables back on, etc - and checked to be sure I didn't miss anything.. It will not run! It will not take throttle at all, it bogs out immediately if trying to give throttle. On choke - it will idle at maybe 1800 RPM's or so but as without choke - as soon as throttle is applied - it bogs out and backfires a little.... and dies. I didn't put the airbox on and I can see the slides moving as it runs. I've taken the bowl drains out and each is full of gas. The carbs are tight to the rubber on the bottom. Everything seems okay! I know sometimes that these Venture's wont run right with the airbox off but I've had mine off numerous times throughout the years and it never made a difference. That's about the only thing I haven't tried to remedy this problem. I do know it ran well, except for the overflowing left front carb when I took them out to be cleaned. I took them apart myself as well hoping to find something obvious, put them back together and back on the bike - same problem! Any advice would be very appreciated. I've had these out three times now and getting pretty fast at it. Pretty tired at it too. Thanks. ahunt2412@yahoo.com
  7. For some reason at a redlight I looked down at the side of my engine. I noticed that the carb joints were pulsating with the engine. Fine right? There are huge cracks in the boots. Looked bad. Looks like 55 and 70 for left and right times 2 = 250 bucks. Ouch. Of course I don't want to be left on the side of the road either. I know how to find vehicle junkyards but haven't seen many bike yards. Anybody know where I can get some? I scanned ebay and didn't see any. Also might be a good time to upgrade my 97 RSTC to the 32mm Venture carbs. Anyone have a source on those either? I do plan to be a contributing member, may payup tomorrow. (no work tomorrow gonn abe home all day) I am in Gainesville, ga. Thanks very much.
  8. I stopped for gas today after a short fast run down the interstate, when I was idling waiting for a pump the left pipe starts backfiring. When I got home one of the the left carb boots had raw gas running down it. What is tke likely cause and repair. Thanks
  9. MY 2009 RSV had a fuel smell even when gas was shut off for hours after it was shutdown. Should it take the dealer over two weeks to get parts to fix this? he said 3 to 5 days for a carb gasket?
  10. Ok gentlemen, I'm back for more assistance. After trying every non-invasion thing I could to get my one carb from leaking, I had to tear it down. I pulled the float bowl cover off and the float looked good and moved (by hand easily) and seemed to engaged the needle well. I took the float out and the needle. Needle is brand new and looks it. I don't see any nicks or tears in the rubber. Soo.... what test or experiment can I do to test the bouancy of the float. I have two others left over from the rebuild that I could swap. Also..... does anyone know if there are different float needle sizes between the V-max and Venture. A V-max guy rebuilt my carbs. I'm not sure if there are but I suppose if the rubber tip was slighter smaller that could cause it to not seat properly. From a probably standpoint, what are the odds that the seat is bad? (I've posted a few other times with the leaking carb (from overflow). I'm pretty convinced that it's not debris. I've drained all the bowls several times, taking the fuel line off and turned the bike on and off so gas pumped into a glass jar. Gas in all circumstances looked clear. Thanks as always. Bill
  11. 26H-13586-00-00 JOINT, carburetor 1 Joint under carb on 1st gen 83 1200 cyl 1 and 3 Looks like not available at most part houses anyone have one laying around?
  12. After being fed up with carb issues and running on 3 for awhile, I finally got another set of carbs from a member who was parting out and had redone carbs. I installed carbs and it was great to run on all four again. Seemed to stumble a bit at low RPM so I put the sync to it and got it all staighted out. Ran great for about 50 miles, then started running like crap. Seems to fall on it's face and die when you give it gas. Runs great at 5k-7k rpm.. The diaphrams and slides are all in great shape. Fuel filter is new, idles great. No air leaks I can find. Any ideas O' Venture guru's? A BMW 1200 LT is looking appealing right now, but I still love the 1st gen look and power (when it runs right).
  13. Here's some pics of the carb tune going on down at Beer30 and Beer 24/7's shop on friday. The young fella is Jason (bluerstd08) he's easy to spot, since he's younger then the rest of the guys. Had fun and you can see Becky (beer24/7) was busy working while we were there. Margaret
  14. What carb can i use on my 1983 venture that i can bolt it on and just go:confused24:
  15. Just did my first carb synch on my bike and I have a quick question. While taking off the rubber hose from one of the carbs I noticed it had a cut/split, does it have to be replaced or is it just a minor thing? BTW: 1st time doing it by myself = 20 minutes. Saved $250 and 8 hours because that's what the shop wants.
  16. Will a carb from a 1988 venture work right on a 1983 venture:confused24:
  17. can i use a 1988 carb on a 1983 venture will it work:starz:
  18. I've had the 86VR for a few weeks and after some tinkering, I got it running pretty good...some popping at idle but that's about it. I decided to check the back right diaphragm, just to see its condition. As it turns out, it was in pretty good shape...a couple of pinholes but that's it. I reinstalled and decided to see how the slides work looking down the air filter hole. To my surprise, three were pulsing freely but #3 was not moving at all. I took the diaphragm out and it came out in sections. The metal piece which holds the diaphragm and plastic washers together had separated from the sleeve. I reassembled the unit at what a difference. All of a sudden, I had a 4 banger. I saw a cheapo carb sync tool somewhere consisting of clear fuel line in two loops and ball bearings. I made one of these and after a 5 minute carb synch, (#3 was way out), it goes like a scalded cat.
  19. Is there anyone near Lancaster or Harrisburg PA that would be willing to help me with my first carb sync?
  20. We own a RSV and it's now time to start doing my own maintenance (no more local dealer). So I'm buying the tools to do a carb sync and I start thinking about my Suzuki M95/ MS. Do we need to sync the carbs on our V twin's? I've never seen a post about that.
  21. finaly get to pick up my bike in time for the 4th. the dealer replace needles and seats. says it was due to gas. covered under warrenty tho. got a carb synch and tuneup out of it.
  22. I bought an '83 standard in about 40 pieces, Pretty much everything is there, trying to restore to normal. Choke cable; where does it attach at the carb end. Have and checked manuals but no mention of choke in carb sections or anywhere else, so where? Thanks in advance, Denny
  23. I did post this on the other thread. But wanted to give all a heads up... Well, here I am. Finally able to breathe. Been working on these carbs for weeks. Got a spare set off Ebay. They were in good shape. I used the #3 & 4 bank w/new parts needed. Now my power is linear. Did 125 mile back road ONLY ride. Speeds of 45-70. My overall average was close to 55mph. So, I was using a lot of the pilot jet. Went and filled up at the end of the ride. I really tried to get in as much as I could in the tank by shaking the bike on the center stand...could only fit 2.9 gallons in. That's 43mpg in the hilly area I live in. Pretty damn good and close to what I always got for the past 20 years with this beast. NOW-Neither #3 nor 4 plugs are black. #3 is light brown spot on the tip and #4 is almost white, like 1 & 2. I have #3 pilot screw is 2 ccw turns out and #4 is 2.25 or so-ccw. Note: all settings using digital tach. Prior to this latest carb work. I could not break 40mpg. Last remove / rebuild times, the float/fluid height was dead on and did not change. But still had it too rich somehow. NOW-Something just works better with these Ebay carbs. I know there is something I must have done wrong since the original carb rebuild a year ago. And #1 and 2 have never had an issue. As far as #3&4 problems, I am not entirely sure what the cause was or is on the originals. So my original set of 3 & 4 will just sit. I will be getting it EGA'd soon, to get this finished. I don't think #3 should be the only "brown" plug. But it's better than the black I had before. And the fuel mileage speaks for itself. Thanks for all the suggestions. Even if I haven't a clear idea why she was rich and what I did to fix it. Now if it skips/misfires at idle when hot. My profession being in electronics. I am not worried if it's an electrical issue, coils, or TCI. Because that's all that's left. Hope this is the last of this issue. I bet you hope the same... You must be tried of me by now.
  24. just purchesed a 1988 royal I am new to yamaha and dont know to much about them. new to internet to so my spelling will be bad. after riding for a couple days, the rpm drop to o when I am setting at a red light and it starts back firing. Give it some gas and it runs fine. It runs fine downd the road no missing or back fireing. could this be the diaphram in the carb or could it be electical. where can I find a service for it.I have been reading alot of the threads on this sight and sure helps I am glad I joined. thanks Motorhead 704
  25. Does anyone know where I can buy a complete rebuilt kit worth the money? Do they even make a complete rebuilt kit? By complete I mean one that has everything for the internal instead of having to buy jets and other things seperate. Or does anyone have a set of carbs that are ready to go on for sale? excuse my ignorance on this carb stuff but I gotta learn eventually to do things myself because the shops are just getting higher in price.
