  1. Need urgent help. I'm getting ready to leave for Biketoberfest in the AM and my brake lights quit working on my '04 Midnight Venture. I removed both seats and loosened up the wires underneath and the brakes started working again so I'm pretty sure it is a short somewhere. Now they have stopped working again. While troubleshooting voltage/grounds at the bulb socket I must have blown a fuse because now the tail light portion of the bulb does not work. Can anyone tell me where the fuse is for the tail/brake lights? Also, the grounds check good. Thanks for any help or suggestions
  2. Bought a used Hannigan Classic sidecar and will have the local dealer (UNB Customs) mount it soon. It came off a HD Ultra Classic so the mounts are a bit different. It has the electric camber, disc brake and dampner. Dealer will order parts Monday and let me know when they will be in. I plan on installing a new rear tire on the RSMV and new rear brake pads plus flushing the brake fluid on the rear. This should take care of the need to get to the rear for awhile. It comes with the quick disconnect brake line so I can dismount the car easily. I talked in depth with Muffinman and got the courage to buy it. My wife loves the idea of comfort while riding. I don't have the heart to tell her she is still on the back of the bike and the dogs get the car. :whistling:
  3. Good morning everyone, My 08 RSV, having only 11K miles on it makes a horiffic grinding noise from the front brakes. I checked the pads and there is alot of brake left. Do I take the pads off and scuff them to remove the glaze? Or is there another problem I should be looking for? Thanks Frank
  4. I need to talk to some one who knows about the back brake. I need help A.s.a.p !!! 954-430-9771
  5. I'm boing through the brake system on my "83. Since it has been setting up for a very long time, the calipers are forze solid. What is the best way to break the pistons loose without damaging them?
  6. Saturday I rode the Dragon, what a blast.... While I was pulling into the resort I lost my rear brakes. I was telling my buddie who was with me I lost my rear brakes and the gentleman who was doing the pin stripping and sewing on patches overheard what I was telling my friend told me that I had obviously boiled my brakes and he suggested doing a fluid change to Motul 5.1 brake fluid. He was a wealth of knowledge and then he proceded to show me his RSV. He pulls a 1000 lb trailer daily through the Dragon and said he had changed his fluid to the 5.1 and has had no problems since. Looking for thoughts about changing from the DOT 4 fluid to the 5.1. He said it has a higher temp rating and that it would solve any issues I would ever have with hot brakes. Now that this has happened should I am going to flush and replace my fluid since it is now black and was wondering if I should do a rear pad change as well? Also was wondering is there anyone in the Nashville/Murfreesboro Tennessee area that knows how and has the equipment to help sync my carbs?
  7. Hi All, My buddy has an 84 venture, he traded for it and it had squeaky rear brake so he put new pads in. He tried and tried to get the brakes bled. I personally read every first gen brake bleeding problem here and on the other list trying to help him. It turns out, that he thinks the problem was, , GET THIS, the brake pedal had little to no free play in it, the footpegs were put on the most forward location, once he moved the pegs and brake pedal back one notch, the brakes bled just fine thank you. He finally had noticed that the brake adjuster was at the very end of its travel so , having everything else fail, he moved it back and tried bleeding it. He is theorizing ,sp, that the master cyl was pulled past its proper travel, therefore stopping any actual brake bleeding. This is the first time that I have heard of this on this and the other list, so I will be posting this as a theoretical possibility so others may know what happened. I would appreciate comments from anyone else who has had this problem as well as anyone who knows for absolute sure that this ,,theoretical assumption is a possibility.
  8. Good Day: I have an '07 Venture and was searching for the thickness specs of the brake rotors. (I found the specs for the 96-'01 Royal Stars, but not specific to the Venture.) I plan on replacing my front tire this weekend, and if I had to replace the rotors, I would do so at the same time. I have 19,700 miles on the bike. I already replaced the rear tire and brake pads around 14,000 miles. Thanks!
  9. I noticed the other day that my rear brake pedal was going down farther than normal. I changed my pads abouth 6000 mile ago so I thought I was due for new ones. When I did a visual check by removing the inspection cover, it looked like they were getting close enough to change. I went out and bought some new ones and started to change them. When I removed them, I discovered that I had at least half of the pad left. The outside pad had worn slightly more than the inside so I decided to swap them. In the process of compressing the pistons, I decided to check the fluid level in my reservoir and found it EMPTY! I finished installing the pads and added fluid to the reservoir. The level must have been just below the bowl because it I got a few bubbles come up while filling and when I blead the breaks I didn't get any air from the caliper. I ran enough fluid through the system to ensure that ther wasn't any air in it. My pedal is tight and working perfectly. Now the mystery begins. I inspected the entire rear brake system to figure out where my leak was (I surly had to have a leak). To my surprise I couldn't find any evidence of a leak or even dirt collecting where the had been a leak. I've been working on cars, airplanes, and bike most of my life and have never had brake fluid just disapear. Hydraulic fluid doesn't evaporate (as far as I know). So where did it go? I know that the reservoir was full the last time I installed pads and I have checked the site window ocasionally when I was cleaning the bike. Has anyone else seen this or have a resonable explaination?
  10. Hi there everyone. My son and I were out for a ride and got pulled over and the cop informed me that i had no tail lights. Good thing is the cop let me go and told me to get them fixed. Ok i will get to the point. I have went over the hole wiring and cannot find a broken wire and also have found out that when I apply the front brake the brake light does not work but the rear does work. Any ideas on what is up. Does the cmu have something to do with the fact that i have all the lights on the bike but now running lights on the back of the bike.
  11. my rear blinkers are not flashing. the front ones work fine. when i use the blinker either to left or right my brake light flashes and the blinkers dont ??? whats the problem and where do i start? thanks in advance steve
  12. So, Trying to figure out some things on my '05. What is the typical expected life for the Brake Pads. I replaced the rears 2 years ago and now have put on 14,000 Kms (yup Canadian Eh!) on this set of rear brake pads. They were EDC FB??? for the dealer. Sounding like on the rear, the caliper is not fully releasing in the past few days? Grease to the brake pistons required? No pads on the front since I became the owner of this unit. Getting a squeaking noise from the fronts now, so thinking it's time. Total mileage on the scooter is 50,500 Kms. Any feedback (and I know I will get your thoughts) is appreciated.
  13. Had anyone else experienced a hissing noise with the EBC HH brake pads? I just put mine on a couple weeks ago and they hiss when applying the rear brake?
  14. I've been bleeding the rear/front brakes for a week and still not much difference.Today I did it again...and if I "pump "them up ,I have good brakes until I get stopped...but when I go to use the foot brake again, say within a block,...NOTHING!!!(or very little). There's no leaks...replaced all brake pads (used kevlar pads) rebuilt rear caliper...put speed bleeders all around..Disc thickness is .331 (plenty thick) ran a 1/2 qt of fluid thru the system????? It did feel like the brakes were fading off as I held them down...(This is on my 84 venture)The only thing I can think of next is to rebuild/replace the rear master cyl.The repair manual says to replace the proportioning valve when yor rebuild the master cyl...anyone else have this much trouble?????
  15. Hey all - Got an '83 Venture Royale that has started intermittently displaying the low brake fluid level warning light... usually it pops on during acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears. Checked the fluid levels and they seem fine. no drips, leaks or missing fluid at all. BTW ... brakes are working just fine as well. Anyone have any suggestions or ran into this before? Thanks in advance J
  16. The other day while I had time off I was getting my 86 ready to go on the trip and noticed the front brake signal was not working but the back brake was so OK it is an 86 so I went on line and ordered another one. Today I went to go for a ride to my dads and the back brake lights were not working, went through all the fuses and they were OK so I went for a little ride turned on the cruise control and tapped on the front and back brakes and they shut off the cruise which tells me both switches work, now is there some kind of brake module ? I start m y 12 hr nights today so I can't mess with the bike for a couple of weeks if anyone has an idea I would appreciate it.
  17. What happened? I took off my wheels and had new tires mounted. Got it all back together, backed into the street, put it in first, but when I let the clutch out it bound up like when you forget to release the parking brake on your car. With the clutch in, or in neutral, it moves freely. I've done this before and never had any trouble. Any ideas?
  18. Im in the process of putting led light strips in the rear trunk light bar on my 91 vr. It is already wired for running ,brake , and turn signal. Im replaceing the incandescent bulbs with light strips to save on some electrical draw. Not sure if Ill replace the turn bulbs or not as they are only on briefly. I have arleady replaced the running bulbs with 2 12 inch superbright led strips. Going to replace the brake bulbs with the same size srtips. Here is the Question. Since its already wired for brake lights in there, is there a flasher module I can put inline to make the strips for the brake lights falsh instead of being solid or at least flash a few times before they go solid. Any help will be apreciated. TAhnks in advance David
  19. Was up in Racine WS for a family reunion over the 4th. My Cousin works for Bombardier and brought home a Spyder for us to ride. It was Billiard Red, with black accents. Ok, so the color alone makes me stand out. I was a little thrown off by the lack of a clutch and front brake levers. The shifting was done by a lever on your left thumb, forward for Up, backward for Down. Also, the creature would downshift automatically as you slowed down to a stoplight. It started easily enough, although there were some extra things to do, like set the brake, touch a button on the dash, reset the kill switch, and then turn the key. Riding it was easy. I don't like the position where you put your weight on your wrists, ala sport bikes. Wifey rode with me, and was unhappy with the forward sliding of the seat, causing her to lean on me a lot. Ha! I was not used to the passenger crashing into me, either. So here we are in Racine, Wisconsin, and where do my relatives, all riding ElectraGlides or RoadGlides, want to go? Why the Harley Dealership Gathering, of course! Now there were a lot of people there. I estimated we saw over 300+ Harleys outside and around the dealership. And I am on a Red Spyder. Oh boy. Needless to say, as I was being directed where to park, a LOT of people were watching us inch through the parkinglot. You know how you swing the bike into line with others when you park? Not quite as easy with two tires out in front of you. I had to use the Reverse to make it happen. Which was quite convenient. Had an issue getting off the Spyder. Apparently you have to set the emergency brake before you can pull the key out. Otherwise it beeps incessently. Would have been nice had my cousin told me about this "feature", heheh. But after several minutes of fumbling, we figured it out. Later after the Relatives bought their Genuine Harley Replacement Parts for the ride home, (Kidding!) I was left behind trying to back out of the parking lineup. My Wifey even took off on one of the ElectraGlides ("I am not riding that thing back" she said) As I puttered it through the mass of people, someone called out "Yeah, a Spyder! We make the Fuel Injectors for those things." Aha! That is why they are not dragging me off this strange 3-wheeler... they have family that actually works for the Can-Am plant! I was not in mortal danger! (Things would have been a LOT different at say, Strokers, in Dallas....just saying) Back to the ride. Don't throw rocks, but I was riding without a helmet. The tranny noise sounded like it was red-lining, but the tach said different. I didn't like the way you went into corners. Not leaning is just...wrong. It was very stable, and shifting was really effortless. The auto downshifting...well it was a little hard to get used to. I did find one thing that I absolutely did not like. I hit some gravel on the highway, and the front wheel slung it up around and it hit me on the arm/chest. Only happened once, but that was more than enough. THoughts: I would pass on getting a chance to ride them again. Its too easy. There is no effort, and its not a motorcycle. But if you are not comfortable riding on 2-wheels, then it would be a great way to go. I found it way more stable than the Harley Trike my MIL owned. If YOU get a chance to ride one, do so. My expressions are not doing it justice.
  20. Can anyone tell me which wire is the hot that goes to the brake light? I can't find a good wireing diagram. I recently bought a flasher for the brake light. Thanks.
  21. My rear brake system was not working so I removed the MC and replaced it with a spare that I received when I got the bike. Grabbed a can of Brake fluid of the shelf and bleed the breaks and walla I have rear front brakes now. This was all time consuming (started around 8:30 pm and finished about 12:30 am) but not real difficult. (By the way the Speed Bleeders work really well). This morning the bike would not start so I removed the TCI (it's relocated to be under the false tank) and put it into the oven on warm for 15 min. Re installed it and the bike started right up. So off to work I go. I'm lucky that my commute is only 10 miles. At the 8 to 9 mile mark the bike starts to bog down like it's under a heavy load so I shift down which help for about 10 seconds so I pull the clutch in to shift down again and the rear tire locks up...hard. I could not free it even with the engine. The cage behind me was a little close but they never hit me. I did the best I could to get the bike out of the street but I only got it out of the main traffic pattern. Luckily it was just a busy residential street. I turned the flashers on got off the bike and tried to assess the problem. (The engine is off by now). Well I figured that I did something wrong When doing the brakes last night so I checked the rear brakes (I hadn't put the panels back on just in case I had to get back into there) and sure enough the MC plunger would not move. I stood around for 10 to 15 min trying to figure out what to do. I finally went to the house that I was stopped in front of and asked to barrow their hose to cool down the brakes. So here I am practically out in the middle of the street looking like I’m washing my bike with the flashers going I'm sure people passing by thought I was insane. Well the water cooled the brakes down enough that I was able to get the bike out of the street. I was not able to get the bike to start because the flashers wore the battery down. Well if you have not guessed by now the lesson I learned is to NOT use old open brake fluid!!! I'm lucky that it didn't lock up on me while I was on the highway. So I walked the remaining mile and a half to work stopping at the auto parts store along the way and got everything I would need to bleed the brakes at lunch when I go retrieve the bike. By the way the whole time I was out in the street not one person offered to help or even asked what I was doing. Although no one on a bike came by.
  22. Gotta love Craigslist! To scratch that standard itch, I picked up this 82 GS850G this morning. This one has been lovingly cared for (I think not so much by the guy I bought it from but definitely before. Needs some fork seals and brake pads, but got it for well under NADA for one in this good of shape. I already ditched the plexi-faring. Better pictures once she has had a bath. http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Sasha/Sasha1.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Sasha/Sasha2.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Sasha/Sasha3.jpg
  23. Hey Guys, I'm just curious if EBC makes a HH pad for the 1200s? I've searched just about everyone and I can't find anything definite with a part number.....so I suspect not. But if not, what sintered brake pad is available? Thanks, Rick
  24. Can somebody elaborate which calipers can be used to upgrade the front and rear calipers of a MKII Venture? Which years R1 or R6 are a direct bolt on using the same disk position and diameter. Also, which modifications need to be done to the brake hoses or which hoses are used as a replacement? Do the Ventureline chrome caliper covers fit over the updated calipers? How is the brake feel with the stock master cylinders after the caliper upgrade? Any modifications necessary to the master cylinders? What models could be used? Thanks in advance, I know it's a lot of questions, but some of you have done the upgrade and might want to share with the group. Klaus
