VR Assistance

  1. I am unable to access the VR Donations link from the MAIN MENU box on the left.
  2. I finally got around to hauling something on the back of my old Cab Over besides a bike. I've been selling off a few of my projects that never got off the ground and delivered one of them today. It's a '55 Chev pickup. The guy I bought it from years ago had installed an earlier style ('48 -'53) grill and included the older style box with it. That's why there is another box sitting on top of the stock one.
  3. Repositioned Stebel horn Below the right air box.
  4. My tach has always been slow on my 86. This was nothing to be very concerned about but it was always on my mind that it could be this way because of something electrical about ready to fail. What with the tach receiving its signal from number 2 coil which in turn runs it through the TCI box then on to the tach. I have always read anything on this site that was tach related in hope of pinpointing what it was that made mine run slow. I have been told that my TCI could be faulty, my #2 coil faulty, bad ground to maybe just a boggy tach. Well the search is over! After running the diagnostic check of the wiring to the TCI. NOT IT. Check of coils. NOT IT. Adding a second ground wire. NOT IT. The problem was the tach itself. I removed it from the housing to look it over and clean it using some electrical contact cleaner. My brother-in-law was here when I took it out and he said that it just looked as if it needed lubed up to free it up. He grabbed the can of Sili-kroil and began to ever so lightly lube the needle mechanism while moving it toward redline and letting it go. After five minutes of this. THAT WAS IT! It is now free as the RPM it reads. Upon further inspection it seems that on the backside of the instrument cluster box that houses the tach and speedometer, on the tachs side of it. There is a unplugged hole that looks as if it should hold a light but there is no provision for one there. Being a 86 this hole has let moisture and the elements into the tachs cluster for 22 years a very unnecessary and troublesome hole that is now plugged. More than enough time to gum up my tach. So if your tach is boggy don't rule out that all it might need is a good clean & lube.
  5. I feel the need to provide a shout out for New Enough. They have been the best internet vendor I have ever used - for any product. On Tuesday morning, I ordered a First Gear Killimanjaro jacket - on sale. Got home from work yesterday (Wed.) and there was a box on my back steps. Yup, sure enough - 1 DAY TURNAROUND! And the shipping was included with the purchase. And they contributed a dollar to our website. The jacket is mahhvulus loooking dahhlink. RR
  6. Ok, I give up... where's the fuse located for the 12 v cigarette lighter plug? Interestingly enough the fuse box itself is not mentioned in the official Yamaha manual. What's up with that..... thanks
  7. I need some help figuring out what is wrong with my bike before I decide to dig deep into it. I have an '86 venture that has 74 K miles and has an unknown history for most of those miles. Here are some recent repairs: new plugs 1/2 yr ago, new cables & caps this year, new diaphragms last year, carbs synced last fall. My scoot has been underpowered for some time and is getting worse. Tonight I was out looking trying to rule some obvious things out. One thing that is new and significant is that I found a small amount of emulsified oil and what appears to be radiator fluid in the air box (see picture). It seems that it is coming from the engine breather tube that is feed back in to the air box. After the engine is warm you can see a steady stream of smoke/vapor coming out of this tube in the air box. I also do not know what that chamber does that is mounted between the "V", it appears to have both cooling and the engine breather tube. I can't seem to find good documentation on this thing . . . So . . . Do I have a blown head gasket, needs a valve job, or could this be caused by something else?? This site is awesome and very friendly! Thanks for your help! Mike
  8. For the price of three new Ventures, you could be riding this: http://www.motorcycle.com/images/content/Review/tn_Travertson_VRex_GM5V9320.jpg Story here: http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/2008-travertson-vrex-review-75546.html
  9. I've noticed on several individual's post they have a "weather box" from other web sites like weatherunderground, etc. My question is how can I add this to my post's. I've searched the FAQ and tried to follow instructions from the weather web sites on how to do this but to no avale. My computer skillls appear to be lacking as to how to complete this, what I'm sure is a simple task. Please point me in the right direction....somebody. Thanks.
  10. The good news is that after waiting for about 6 weeks, Verizon FINALLY got my DSL installed today. The bad news is that it will only work if I take my computer outside, sit it on the central air unit, run an extension cord around the house to plug the DLS modem into, and connect it directly to the telephone junction box. The modem will sync out there but not when I connect it in the house. Apparently I've got some sort of problem with my internal wiring. Too many outlets or something. The thing is, we don't even use any hard wired phones in the house, only cellular, so I just have to trace out the jacks and disconnect some or just run a new cat 5 wire from the junction box outside. Maybe I'll get around to that tomorrow.
  11. Here are a couple of pics of my trailer that I modified. I can have it as a stake trailer or with a cartop box on it.
  12. Does anybody out there have the specs for air box mod for going to a K&N filter on 1st gen? have an 87 royale that i want to put a K&N in. bought with somewhat modified air box. dont know what the original air box is supposed to look like inside and has holes drilled in top of outside. if anyone has an idea of what i need to do to make it right please help..lol..thanks. riding season coming soon!!!!!
  13. Guess I should have taken some pics, but I'll try to describe what I saw. I had the gas tank off... replacing the handlebars and cables. There is an air box on each side on top of the carbs with a piece between the two with some foam between the pieces. The left side foam was oily with more oil toward the rear carb. I also noticed more oily dirt on the rear of the left box. I took the left side off to look inside. Both front and rear carbs looked the same. The rear might have had a little oily feel but if it did, it was not much. The box was more oily to the rear. I didn't see any oil up front, coming from the filter boxes. I keep my oil level about half-way up the site glass. My gas mileage has never been very good and has been worse the last few months. There are three vent tubes underneath on the left near where the center stand is mounted. Two are pretty heavy with oily dirt. One was venting a lot of gas fumes and an occasional drop of gas. Any guesses? I sure don't won't to put it in the shop.
  14. Hey there, Has anyone ever attempted to pull of the Lowers on the RSTD? I just recently purchased my 06 and hadn't had it 3 days and took it back due to the whine. "I" basket is supposed to be here this coming Tuesday and I have my fingers crossed. Anyway, when I went riding the day after I bought it.. man it got warm down there by my feet and legs. So I started looking around and saw that it looks like the only things there, which would require relocation or mounting of some sort are the following: Fuse box, a box that looks like a ecu, brake res, and the intake air filters. Seeing that I thought ok.. Just mount a K&N set up directly to the unit right up under the gas tank and then either build a little box to house the ECU and Fuse box in. Outside of that, I am not seeing anything major unless of course I am missing something. Would be SO Nice to have the flexiblity of putting on and removing as needed based on weather conditions. So anyone tried this yet? Thanks, Buckey:cool10::detective:
  15. I am trying to mount a Yeasu FT 10sr, it's an amateur radio. It consists of a control head and a box that contains the actual radio that is separated by a cable. I can not find a good spot for the box. It is about 4 inches square and 2 deep but needs room in front for the antenna connections. The cable between the two boxes is not quite long enough to go back to the trunk if I have the control head mounted high on the handle bars. I may be able to get it into the trunk by moving the control head further down the bars but was wondering if anyone knows another spot that would accommodate the box? There doesn't appear to be any room under the seat or behind each side cover. Anywhere else where there's some space?
  16. I was reading a post about someone needing a battery support bar. I have a good one that needs only a bit of paint. I also have a spare box. JB
  17. After finally getting back into ripping the bike apart for the 2nd gear fix, I found the previous owner removed the battery vent hose. As you can tell from the pics, I've got some paint to redo, but the biggest thing is I now need a new battery box bracket. This goes across the frame and the box sits on it. Also looking for some cleaner front pipes as these are pretty well shot, unless someone can give me an idea as to how to clean them up. Going to be a long process, as I wasn't expecting this much to do, but it's apart, and might as well get done. Also found acid corrosion on the box terminals and just about everywhere else. Gonna put new valve cover gaskets on, too! Top and front of the motor looks NASTY!!! Oh well, back to work!!!
  18. I found a site that offers a trailer kit with 12" wheels and leaf spring suspension for $650. This price includes shipping to my home. This kit does not include the cargo box butg does have a swivel hitch. I priced the cargo box at sears for $189. This site also offers the same kit with torsion suspension for $850. My question is this---is the torsion suspension worth the $200 difference?
  19. Talked the dealer into giving me a short windshield when I bought the RSV 06 since the one on there was a bit scratched up. They didn't have it so they left the tall one on and gave me the shorty when it came in. Never got the shorty out of the box. After some riding, and reading in forums, the part that can make the most noise (read significant other here) has said that she does not want the shorty on. Since I do not like unnecessary noises coming from the back I have decided to agree with her. (see not quite as dumb as I look after all). Any way here is the deal. If someone has a full height windshield in great shape (i.e. like new) and wants a shorty still in the box I will work a swap with them. Just PM me. The windshield I have is as follows PART#: STR-4XY02-50-00 DESC: WIDE,WINDSHIELD/LOW
  20. hi guys i am currentley working on my sons 1991 suzuki gsxr 750 i need some help if anyone can help it.. If so how would i test that? thanks, Denny
  21. Hi there, New guy here. I am looking for an 86-89 venture and have talked to one fellow about his. He said he removed the catalytic convertor. Would he be talking about the collection box do you think? Will the bike run OK without the collection box or does it need some sort of one? Looking back through older posts someone was making these....and you could still buy them from Yamaha dealers correct? Or am I out to lunch and there is a catalytic convertor? Thanks.
  22. Anyone have any problems with cracking of the plastic of the lid after instaklling the chrome metal rack? Reason I ask is the after-market trunk box I bought for my Sabre developed cracks where each hole was drilled into the lid and this Yamaha box appears to be same material - (whether it is or not not sure). I would rather have a box with no cracks and no rack than a box with cracks and a rack!
  23. is the exhaust collector box absolutely necessary, for a specific reason? can i run dual 2 into 1 exhausts, and still be safe , as far as back drafts, burnt valves, are concerned? i really want to do away with that blasted , rattling box! just jt
  24. I thought I was leaking some oil from the valve cover but don't think that is a big issue - but there is all sort of junk on the left side, especially in front of the front carb, extending down over the carb drain hoses, down the left side - and it looks moist above the carb where the book goes to the air box. any idea what is happening here and what it would take to fix it? 87 VR, 67Kmiles, run at about 44 mpg on trips, maybe 40 around the house. runs smooth, starts well
  25. Greetings all. Noticed that I was having trouble keeping tight, the 4 bolts that secure my top box. I'd go for a ride with or without the pillion-in-a-million and after about 30kms I'd notice that the top was 'bouncing' and I could hear a rattle. No matter how often I'd tighten the bolts, the damned things would be loose in no time. Decided to take them out and give them a dose of "Lok-tite", only to find that they had been gradually slamming themselves to death. Appears that as soon as they loosened up and the top box started to bounce, the bolts were being damaged. Have ordered new ones. In the meantime, have a look at the damage to these 3. Whadda y'all reckon?
