  1. Next week this time I will be in Memphis, Tn. hopefully having lunch with a very large group of Ventureriders then off to St. Jude to give them some money and take a tour of the facility. Hope to see a lot of bikes and members there. Be careful. Our tour is scheduled for 1:00 pm, so I should be there about 11:00 am or there abouts.......I will try not to be late again.................. Fly J Truck Stop. W. Memhis, Tn.
  2. i've been hanging around the best oil sight on the net. for a couple of years, www.bobtheoilguy.com . i have been using mobil1 10w-30 extended performance energy conserving in my wing for the last 7000 miles. i'm using 4000mi. oci's on it. i will get an oil analysis in 1000 miles to see how this oil fares in my wing. most guys are using 8000 mi. oci, on the wing. i just can't go that long. in my v-twins, v-star and nomad, i switched to rotella t 15w-40 cj4, at 3000 mi. oci, because of the higher ppm of zddp. i am going to have an analysis done on both of them after two oil changes to flush them of any remnents of the other oil that was in them. as soon as i get the info back i will post it. these three bikes are a good cross section of different bikes to find out what works best in motorcycle engines. since oil is my all time favorite subject, i have to know. i will be using blackstone laboratories. this may take awhile. according to my research so far these should be the best oil choice for these three bikes. i am expecting very good wear no's in all 3 bikes. time will tell.
  3. Well, another year for MotoGP here, and the crowd downtown for bike nite has doubled! We got down there just as they were letting the bikes in the area, got to park right on the corner in the middle of the action! Saw an 87 Blondie from Iowa there, the only other 1st gen we saw. A couple of 2nd gens, left VR cards on them all! Probably 1000- 1500 bikes down there, they stretched from south of Union Station to a block or two north of the circle (about a 5 block span), with bikes also filling 2 side streets as well. A couple of notes, we saw at least 4 09 VMaxxes, 2 Visions (yeck), probably an early 50's Harley that had NOT been touched since it was built. Red Bull had a big presence with a couple of "Party Blocks" setup (sponsor of the race). All in all, a really good time! Met up with Pegscraper and family, showed them around looking at the bikes, their Foreign Exchange student Carmen had an absolutely great time (she likes the "ape-hanger" choppers with the young fellas riding!). That's her beside the Boss Hoss bike. Finally ran into Mariner Fan right as we were leaving for the night, he had a dead cell phone and NO CAMERA! Mighty strange for Bob! Heres a few pics, check out the Harley with the custom paint:
  4. I had to let you guys see this. This is me and my dad. As we were leaving Home Depot the other day a man on an Ultra Classic stop me and asked, "What......you guys couldn't get ladder racks with those bikes?" I just smiled and rode off. I figured afterward I would take a pic and let you guys see.
  5. Tinkerbell now has her motorcycle operators learners permit. She goes to safety class in two weeks and will be on the road on her own bike shortly thereafter. Looks like we'll have to buy "safety chrome" for two bikes soon........
  6. Its going to be raining here in Newnan very soon, and according to the weather channel, they have rain in the forecast for the entire week...........Maybe we will get lucky, but I sure am glad we are trailering the bikes up to Vogel, that would be one nasty ride in the rain if we had to ride. Thanks to Jamie for getting a trailer for this trip. Hope the bikes dont have to stay on it. Keep your fingers crossed and pray for sunshine................ If it rains anybody for some poker...............
  7. what screws do we turn out a 1\4 turn on our carbs. and what dose it do for the bikes? I guess I'm dumber than a mud puddle.:confused24:
  8. Doreen and I met up with bj66 (Bernie) & randyg on Saturday in Sioux Falls. Had some good conversation and mutual admiration of bikes. Great meeting you both. Hoep to get together again sometime. I did not know when I set this date that a National softball tourny would be going on the same weekend. Hotels all booked. Doreen and I stayed the night in a room we were able to find. (Must have been that last one in town.) Lots of bikes going through enroute to Sturgis. We met a couple from Ontario. Nice folks. I did not catch their names. Her bike is a 650 Vstar (I think) and painted so that the color changes from blue to green depending on the angle of the light. His Venture was black with flames. The fender had the figure of Death within the flames and he was pointing out to the viewer. He said he come on here once in while. They had just spen a week in the Black Hills and were headed home. Hope all those on the roads ride safe and arrive home intact. Dave
  9. Any one got a link to forum on these bikes, this site has me spoiled on what to expect when I look for a site on other bikes can never find one that measures up to this site. thanks for your help
  10. probably a dumb question , but I'll ask it anyway. On a 91 vr will the bikes speakers and the headset speakers play at the same time?? WHen I have the headset button pressed the bikes speakers are not playing and when I dont have the headset button the bikes speakers play but not the headset. Just wandering if they both playor if its ine or the other. Thanks in advance, David
  11. Has anyone tried more upgrading of brakes then just the different calipers? The front disks on these bikes are pretty small by todays standards. I'm sure there are no bolt on bigger disks available. If you did this you would need to change the way the calipers would mount to get them to lineup with the disks. My questions are: Is there a front wheel from a different bike that would work that has bigger disks on it? Is there a set of forks and a wheel that might work with our bikes? Is it possible to drill a set of disks to fit on the bike? Any other suggestions? I'm not afraid to do the work any suggestions would be helpful. I'm not afraid to experiment.
  12. I recently added a post to the first gen tech library that lists a couple of automotive thermostats that can be used in place of the expensive Yamaha thermostats on the first gen bikes. Somebody asked if these thermostats would also work on the second gen. Does anybody know?
  13. We're planning on leaving our house in Easley Sc about 1030 (128 Lakeshore Dr) and heading up to hendersonville, NC via 135, 11 and 25 then pick up 64W all the way to Dillard, Ga and return via 76 and 123, We'll stop along the way for lunch and anything else. So far 5 bikes, maybe one cage (depending on which bike I ride and how twistie the road looks). Anyone want to join us or meet up along the way feel free to shoot me a PM. Should be about a 190 mile, 4plus hour run. I just need to decide :scratchchin:if I want to ride a real bike or the Shadow:innocent:
  14. I've recently purchased a previously-loved trailer to pull behind my 06 MV, and I fabricated and installed a receiver hitch on the bike, but I don't have the bike wired yet for the trailer lights. My question relates to the necessity of using a powered converter on my bike. Most of the websites I referenced for hitches and trailers, make mention of the fact that many modern bikes use either computerized switching or control of the light wiring, and they say as well that the wiring is too light a gauge to handle the extra amperage load of additional trailer wiring if simply piggy-backed or spliced in. Can anyone verify the existence of computerized switching for the light wiring on these bikes, and has anyone had any difficulties with the gauge of the wiring being too delicate? I simply can't seem to find any verification of either of these items in reference to these bikes, but if it's true... I want to install it properly. I just have no desire to spend money on kits that aren't necessary. I have the wiring diagrams required to tie in the circuits, so I don't need that info. Thanks for any info
  15. The Patriot Guard escorted some 30 wounded Marines from the Greenville/Pickens Speedway through Easley and Clemson (SC) to Keowee Key for a week long "rehabilitation vacation". Thanks to some fancy dilly-dallying around I managed to 'spend' some extra time on one of my properties to allow me an opportunity to have a front row seat at the beginning of the run. My guess is that there were probably some 100 bikes escorting these guys. I'm sorry to say that the coach they were in had dark tinted windows and you couldn't see them!!! And due to the miracle of technology I can't seem to attach pictures:soapbox:
  16. I know I've seen it somewhere here. But, for the life of me I can't find it now. The instructions to installing passing lamps on my RSV. These are the yammy brand. Any help out there? Snow is almost all gone....with some luck we should be able to get the bikes out very soon!
  17. how do you move a pic you want to your profile as seen when you post ? when i post its just latchkey. so many have there bikes or other photos next to theres? can someone tell me a simple how to? thanks
  18. We are back and SAFE. We got back yesterday from our first road trip on the venture. I was very pleased at the comfort, space for all the stuff we needed and the performance of the bike. Thanks to all of you for all the advice on packing and bike maintenance items...tips and tricks. We tried to leave Thrusday at 6AM but the weather did not look good. There was a lot of weather on the Mississppi river that we were gonn have to cross to get to ARK. The front passed Thrusday night and we attempted to leave again at 6 AM only to find a mist of rain Friday morning. Waited till about 9 AM and got on our way. I just got a Zumo 660 and had the whole route mapped out and loaded in the Garmin. IT worked great for fuel, lodging and keep us going in the right direction. We made the whole trip and only 41 miles were on the interstate so we could really see the countryside. Crossing the Mississppi delta was quite a drag...miles and miles of flat straight roads with nothing but corn or soy beans. We went north and crossed the river at Helena on Hwy49 with the first night destination of Harrison ARK. 450 miles the first day...made it fine thanks to the Butler mods on the seats. I forgot to put on the sunscreen the first day..now my face is falling off. ARK seems to be a very bike friendly state. No Helment law (which is OK with me...it should be your choice to wear a helment not the govements, I always wear mine) and lots of signs posted that say "Look twice save a life...motorcycles are everywhere". Roads were all very good also. Holels we stayed at were biker friendly with towels avalible to wipe off your bikes and they give you maps of senic rides in the areas telling you where fuel is availible and how many curves are on that route. We rode the ozarks down to Hot springs on Hwy 7 and stopped for the night in Hot Springs. We walked the city over and looked at all we could there also. One thing...seems folks don't know how to parallel park in Hot Springs. We had a friend of ours with us on a Ultra Classic so both the bikes were parked on the street same as about 300 more bikes, while we were eating. A lady trying to parallel park in pulled up close to the ultra and turned her front tire getting ready to back into the parking place and hit the Harley with her tire...almost turning it over and into mine. No damage and luckly we were right there. 5 minutes later a truck pulled in the parking place in front of the bikes and missed my fender by at least 1 inch. Then could not get the truck straight and backed toward the bikes 6-8 times with-in 6 inches. We had to go after that. We did not get to finish our lunch. Seems if we kept them rolling, we had more control over what happens. Trip back was great...we came back south and crossed at Greenville MS...again miles and miles of flat farm land with nothing to see. It was like walking on a treadmill..same seanery for hours. We made it back about 3:30 yesteday...Safe and sound. 992 miles later and ready to go again. We will go back but not across the MS delta. Not many photos...but we will do better next time. Wife claims she was too busy holding on...to take photos:rotf:

  20. I bought a Carbtune, but am intimidated to use it. Does anyone in the Omaha, NE area need their carbs balanced but doesnt have one and would like to help me learn this thing? We could experiment on both bikes. craigr
  21. Hey folks, just throwing this out there to see if there is any interest, if not, no big deal. There is a local pinstriper in the Cleveland area that does really nice pinstripes, cartoon characters, etc. on bikes of all kinds. I have asked him if he would be interested in setting up and doing some of this work on bikes at Maintenance Day. He is interested but can't commit because his wife is expecting on June 11th. He said he would like to do it though and will try to make it IF there is any interest. So...is there any interest? He does pinstripes, names, characters, etc. Don't know what his prices are but I know that he typically charged about $100.00 per bike but said that he does give group rates. I will find out more if there is any interest but don't want to waste his time if there is not.
  22. http://www.nortonmortorcycles.com/bike/bike_961specs.asp Got 20K to drop, feast your eyes on this baby !!! What Brittish bikes should have been, but never were.
  23. For our first time, we went to a local restraunt 'Quaker Steak & Lube' for a weekly 'Bike Night'. WOW!!! There were MANY bikes there, much more than I expected. There had to be over 1000 bikes there!. After we ate, we walked around the 'bikes only' parking lot to check out the bikes. I have an 07 Venture, and was surprised that mine was the only Venture there - Unless one showed up after we left. It was probably 75% HDs with the rest being a mix of Crotch Rockets & everything else. It was quite an experience for us and we really enjoyed all of the people watching. My wife ran into a guy that she grew up with and hasn't seen in years. We plan to do it again sometime. craigr
  24. I was hoping to sell the Voyager (see classifieds) before returning to Alabama on the 22d. If you're interested or have been on the fence on this one PM me. I'll offer big discount to not have to take it back with me. I just can't handle two bikes.
  25. Baldwin, MI. Blessing of the Bikes, 15-17 May, 2009. Not promoting this event but have done a Google Search and of course they say 30,000 to 40,000 Bikes and hundreds of vendors (True?). Has anyone been there? Any VentureRider.Org members going in 2009?
