Bongobobny, you folks not only have higher heat temps than we do, but you also have to suffer through the unforgiving humidity. My wife was born and raised in that area, and she knows how bad it is. We...on the other hand...and on the other coast...enjoy our warm days and our cooler days. It is 80 out today, and almosy zero humidity. In a normal year, we probably run the house central A/C for 2 to 3 days each year...and that is it. People whine about how much it rains in the great Pacific Northwest, but in fact we get less rainfall than where you live. We just have more overcast skies, for more days, but hey everything is green around here, year round. Stay cool, and drink more Iced tea than beer.

RandyR, I wish I had planned to ride to the International in Western NY before this, as my wife (a rider herself) will be flying out to that same area for 3 weeks vacation, during the same time as the International. Had we planned it out in advance, we would have both ridden out together. At this late date, one of us has to stay home while the other is off playing, because we have a ranch of Llamas, Alpacas, miniature goats, etc. With enough advance notice, we could have found an animal sitter. I don't mind riding to NY, as we have done it in the past to ride to lake George for Americade, and to WV for the National WOW rally. But Dixie...hey...that is below the 42nd parallel, and I cannot be riding down that far south. This fair skinned/red headed rider does not like the heat and humidity of the southeastern states. Been there...hated that. Been there too many darned times. Only time I will go back to the far southeast is in Winter, when temps drop below 75. As a fun get-together, we should all have at least one rider in each region that can host carb-tuning days, sorta like a ride-in rodeo. Maybe I have been on the ranch too long, eh? Miles:whistling:

I want to send out a big Thank You to all the folks on this list that have done work on their bikes before me, and have posted the mechanical and technical highlights and info, so that people that follow in their footsteps have an easier time of doing the same thing. For all of you that post info on this forum about improvements, additions, etc., and especially if you include pictures...Thank you. You know who you are, and "I" appreciate it. Today I received in the mail my new Speedhealer from HealTech, and my new Morgan Carbtune Pro, from Calif. Sportbike. Due to the info from trailblazers on this forum, I was able to pre-read all the details prior to my receiving the packages, and was very ready once the items did show up. Now, the speedo on the RSMTD reads accurately, and the carbs are nicely balanced. While the carbs were not too far out, it is nice to KNOW that they are now balanced, and that the engine does in fact run smoother. As a gearhead myself, I want to KNOW the facts of my engine...not just assume. Now, to all you VR and RSTD owners within the PNW, if anyone wants me to ride over to your place and adjust your carbs...for FREE...just let me know. If you want to, you are welcome to ride over to my place...but I am always looking for a reason to go ride somewhere. I will bring all the tools needed, so I will be happy to do the balancing, and show you how it is done. Remember...it is FREE. Thanks,

My question is...how many of you riders use a Radar Detector on your bikes? And secondly...do you use a Radar Detector COVER on it, to protect it from the weather? I am NOT looking for opinions as to which detector to use, and which cover is best. I simply would like to ask...do you use a radar detector, and if so...do you have a cover for it, OTHER than a plastic ziplock baggy. I mean....a real world custom made...serious duty cover made to protect your $ 400.00 + radar detector???? I am going somewhere with this, so I ask you to please just bear this out, and let's see what the numbers are. If you want...go to the VR poll pages, and answer there.

I got a private post from Brian (Golf&Venture) today. He is doing better. He is able to function fairly well on his own, but tires easily, as would be expected. After such a severe accident, and all the broken bones he has, it will take quite awhile. He says he is doing very good on all of his physical therapy. His '91 VR is toast...totaled out. It was a nice looking bike...emphasis on...was. He also has an '89 VR that he was in the process of working on, and then decided to buy the '91 VR. His riding aspirations are a lot in the dump right now, and there are considerations of giving up riding. It is an individual choice, given what he has gone through. He has a wife, daughter, grandkids...to think about. Let's all keep Brian in our thoughts, and hope he returns to 100%, if possible, and gets back to riding if he can, and if he chooses to.

Russell Day Long Seat
Miles replied to farm1810's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Farm1810, happy to see that you have a new Russell seat. I go down there a week from tomorrow to have my 10th seat done by them the following day. Did you do the ride-in, at their location in Shasta Lake City, CA., or did you have it done through the mail? I have always ridden to their location, and it takes about 7 hours to have it built in person. But it really fits perfect when they are done. Here is to having a happy bum ! -
After this last weekend's ride down to San Jose, then up to Sacramento/Auburn, then back home to Olympia, WA...I am tired of the error factor on my speedo and Odo. I have previously installed the SpeedHealer units on my previous 3 GL-1800's, dialing them in to match my Garmin Zumo 550. Now it is a must that I install a new SpeedHealer on this '06 RSMTD. I am disappointed that Yamaha had to join all the others in putting out a speedo that reads so darn high, compared to what the bike is really doing. If I just putted down the road, doing the speed limit, and falling aslepp like the rest of the sheep in traffic, then it would not be needed as bad. But it is still crazy to be riding along just slightly faster than the flow of the other vehicles, and my speedo reads 80 - 85 mph. I have had such great success with the SpeedHealer on my other bikes, and am hoping that the same device (but specific to the RSTD) will correct the error factor in my otherwise cool looking speedo. If my speedo is reading 85 mph, I want to really be riding at 85 mph...not 75 or even 72 mph. Urgh ! I will get this issue fixed. BTW, those new Flanders handlebars (650-08783) really are nice. Yeah !

Looked at it. Ugg....it's Red. Way too slow for me. If it's not Black, well, you know.

New Aux. Fuel Tank
Miles replied to Miles's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Dave77459, you may want to contact GeorgeS on this forum, he too lives in Washington state (all the great riders do) (again, ha ha ha ha ha). GeorgeS believes he may have found a dealer that has a couple of these racks in their warehouse. When I bought mine, I found it had been discontinued, no longer listed in any of the Yamaha accessories pages, and that no one had any available. One dealer in Tucson told me they had three of them. Their computer said so...BS...so I asked the guy to go get his hands on one of them. Turns out they had none, as they were all sold years ago, and the computer system was out of date. I finally found the one I have now from a Las Vegas dealer, their last one, yes they really had it, and when I received it, I immediately saw that it was a used one that someone had mounted, and then returned. Thats okay...it works for me. Maybe GeorgeS can help you find one. -
I called Brian back, as he left a message on my phone while I was riding down to northern Cal. As of last night he was still in the hospital, but expecting to be released today. His wife and sister-in-law were with him, they have a car, and will be driving up to Vacaville, CA. next Monday, as has already been reported. His daughter lives in Vacaville, and is a nurse. I will be down in this area, Sacro/Vacaville, until next Monday to see if he needs any further assistance from one us us...regarding bike, etc. Now, to you boneheads that think a Gen 1 is a better bike than a Gen 2...that may be true...until "I" get my hands on it (he he he he he) and do some magical tweeting to it, so that it runs like a 1942 H-D, then...that would make all of you Gen 1 fans happy, eh? Besides, anyone that REALLY rides already knows that BLACK painted Gen 2 bikes are the best, and fastest. (ha ha ha ha ha) oops, I scared myself

old windshield laying around for RSTD?
Miles replied to ACE50's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have my OEM windshield from my '06 RSMTD that I can let go of. It is in very good condition. No scratches that I am aware of. It is just the windshield...no chrome deflectors or any mountsd. I used all of them on my new windshield from Cee bailey. So if you want it, let me know. I am leaving in about 45 minutes to ride for the next 5 days, but will be back later next Monday, and can have it out to you Tuesday morning. PM me for specific details. Miles -
Kevin, the 37th annual Three Flags Classic ride that goes from Mexico to Canada ends in Nelson this year. You can expect to see about 300 bikes there on Sept. 5-7. Miles:cool10:

Golf&Venture, I am very sorry to hear that you went down. I did tell you specifically to call me if anything happened, or if you need any help. I was not kidding. I have to be down in that area anyway, and am leaving Olympia in about 1 hour...so call my cell number I gave you, and talk to me. I will be riding through Vacaville today, spending the night in Fairfield. Going to San Jose tomorrow, then to Auburn in the afternoon. I will be coming back on late Sunday, spending the night in Yreka, then home on Monday. If you need ANYTHING...call me dammit...that is what I am here for. It is always a bad thing to go down, and break bones, pride, and the bike. But qwhat a perfect excuse to upgrade to a 2nd generation Venturer, eh? Miles

irbk, go to www.aerostich.com, and look at their stuff online. It is a great company to deal with, and you are relativerly close to them, so they can have it to you by Friday. Most of the folks that work there are motorcycle riders, and the owner..Andy.. is very serious about quality products. Have a fun and safe ride. Miles

New 2006 RSTD Owner
Miles replied to irbk's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
irbk, welcome to the best forum on the Internet. (okay, one of the best.) Do not hesitate to ask any and all questions about your bike on this site. The guys and gals are all very helpful. There are NO dumb questions, only unasked questions. What color is your '06 RSTD ? Read alot, have fun, and go ride that new bike. Miles:bighug: -
New Aux. Fuel Tank
Miles replied to Miles's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Trader, my use of the 2 nitro bottles was more for the fun of it, than anything really needed. When riding a GL-1500, and knowing that K1100LT's and K1100RS's and ST1100's can go faster than you, sometimes it is a real hoot to sneak up behind one of them, out in the blackness of the desert, and when you have a good rolling speed coming on, you hit the nitrous button for about 3 to 4 seconds, which gives the bike about 10 to 12 seconds of additional boost, just as you are passing that bike that can usually go a lot faster than you can. When the other rider sees that an old school Goldwing 1500 has just past then, it really startles them, and they have to look down at their speedo to see if they are standing still, or what? It is quite a shock to their system the first time it happens. After a few times, they know to look out for that Black Wing...riding along in stealth mode, in the darkness of the Blackrock Desert. -
New Aux. Fuel Tank
Miles replied to Miles's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
tx2sturgis, my answer to that question would be...yes, I would have a problem with that. ONLY because of the logistics involved in doing drug testing at the start of a ride. I, personally, have no problem submitting to a drug test, any time, anywhere. I am probably the most drug free person you will ever meet in your entire life. Don't smoke, don't drink and don't use drugs. I have always preferred a clear mind over the idea of a drug hazed mind, whether that be from alcohol, drugs, coffee, or cigarettes. In the OLD days of the IBA, it was extremely frowned upon for any rider to use drugs of any kind. If a rider was found to have used drugs, they were banned from the IBA. Most serious riders know very well to stay away from any stimulants, and were prefer the jedi trick of mind over matter. But the mind needs to know...what matters...as in when to stop, and get rest. As for what happens on a one person ride, doing their own thing, not part of a rally or group ride, I cannot speak on that. I would hope that a rider would use their brain, and not false stimulants. -
Trader, thank you for correcting that issue. I am not blameless in this issue. I should never have posted my speeds, times, and distances, as it always seems to rile some feathers. Let's all go back to talking about Venture/Royal Star stuff.

New Aux. Fuel Tank
Miles replied to Miles's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Trader, and others...I have been reminded by a few others on this forum that are also IBA members that "WE" do not like to post in writing anywhere our speeds, or times, or distances done, as it brings a negative light on the IBA riders and community. It is unfortunate that I even needed to be reminded. My big mouth and ego got me into this, and then I was goaded into providing even more info. I should not have opened my mouth to begin with. I have sent all this original info to Trader in a PM, and he can verify if he wishes to, or not. If he does chose to verify my claims, I will know if he did, because someone at the IBA will be telling me they were contacted. One last thing, and then I am done with this. One of you folks just posted that "some" riders in the IBA do these riders while using stimulants...and they even said...other than caffeine. I have to take exception to that. As far as I know, with my 28 years of history as a member of the IBA...the taking of any kind of stimulant...including caffeine...is strictly forbidden in the IBA. I do not know of anyone in the IBA that uses any kind of drug to stimulate themselves, or to stay awake on these rides. I cannot state for a fact that it has never happened, but I will state that in 28 years I have never seen nor heard of it happening. We make it a very strong point that the rider be mentally alert, without the use of chemical aids. As example of how picky we are is that...in an extreme case of emergency need...a rider "may" actually drink a Mountain Dew, which contains a lot of caffiene, just to get themselves to a safe location, and stop for the night. We do all that we can to avoid drinks like coffee, tea, and soda pops, because they are also diuretics, which cause the rider to have to urinate more than normal. Long distance/endurance riding is a very pure sport/lifestyle, in that it challenges the rider and his or her machine against the clock and distance to push themselves to be better riders. The ability to do this is involves a lot of science, as to how to maintain the riders body, their mind, their bikes, etc. It is important to know when to stop...so that we can go even further when we have refreshed ourselves. BUT hey, this forum is supposed to be about Venture/Royal Star bikes...not about the IBA. My original post was about the fuel cell I added to my bike. Can we talk about that kind of stuff, and not about the IBA ? -
New Aux. Fuel Tank
Miles replied to Miles's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Red Rider, I am using a puke tank. It is mounted inside the right side exterior pocket. I ran the vent hose from the vent nipple just under the fuel filler cap, down slightly, then back over top the fuel tank, then exited the Saddlemen bag just above the right side pocket, and then back into the right side pocket, where the puke tank is. The vent hose goes down into the puke tank about 2 inches. Then...I have a second hose that vents the puke tank. That hose it located at the top of the puke tank, and the exterior routing of that house is simply laid on top of the puke tank. It allows the puke tank to vent, but will not allow any fuel that possibly vented into the puke tank to get out. -

tx2sturgis, thanks for the props. In answer to your question, I do indeed have the backside for this fuel range. The other day I "tried" the Ultimate seat on my '06 RSMTD. It was an immediate failure. It would not work for me. If it works for other riders, great for them, and I hope they ride many miles in comfort. Since the Ultimate seat did not work, I already have an appointment with Russell Day-Long Saddles to make a new seat for me...and it will be my 10th Russell saddle. So, my butt can handle it, if I have the right seat, and enough fuel. -
GeorgeS, I hope that these dealers really do have them...for your sake. As per our private talks before, I found out that the rear fender rack was discontinued, and I was darn lucky to find one. But here is what I also found. At the time I was looking, the parts guys did a national dealer search for me, and told me that there was one in Las Vegas (at a dealer that I had just been to the week before, and I live in Washington), and that there were 3 of these racks in a dealer in Arizona. I called the dealer in AZ., had the parts guy manually check his stock, and despite that his own computer told him he had 3 of them, he could not find any of them on the shelves or warehouse. He called me back the next day to tell me that he did not have any, after an extensive search. I called the dealer in Las Vegas, asked the parts guy to go put his hands on the rack, which he did, and then I paid him for it. The sent it to me, and as soon as I opened the package, I knew it was a slightly used rasck, that someone had installed, and then returned to them. I cleaned it up a dn installed it. It looked new when I was done. If in fact these other dealers have one, and I mean the physical item is in their hands and not just on their computer screen, then you have scored !

I thought it was going to be Xmas today, as I was expecting a couple of packages from vendors, and indeed the packages did show up. Yeah for UPS ! Package # 1 contained my new Flanders bars, and my new upgraded high output stator, all from Rick at Buckeye Performance. I am planning on installing the upgraded stator sometime in August, because I have rides between now and then, and that way I have it on before I go on the Three Flags Classic. So today I went about installing the new Flanders bars, part # 650-08783. All went as expected, no issues, and while I did maintain the positioning of wires and hoses on the clutch side, as they were originally...I did reroute all the wires and hoses on the throttle side to be behind the triple tree. I also installed new Kury Iso-grips, in all black...without the weighted bar ends. I am happy with the installation, and in a short time I will get used to the newer longer bars, and the position they now put me in. I (believe) it will be a good thing, as I knew the OEM bars were too far forward. Package # 2 contained my new Ultimate seat for my '06 RSMTD. (drum roll please) Now folks, I have been around a long time, and as the name states...I have over a million miles on my butt. I knew when I took this seat out of the box that this was going to be a problem. I have owned over 25 motorcycles during the past 42 years of riding, and have had 9 saddles made by Russell Day-Long saddles. I am well known for being able to ride over 2,000 miles in 24 hours, so...I knew when I saw this seat that someone on the planet just surpassed Mike Corbin for making the worlds worst motorcycle seat. I went ahead and mounted the new seat on my bike. Sat on it...cursed a few times...got back off the bike...looked it all over...took several measurements...sat back on the seat again...cursed several more times...and decided to be a glutin for punishment and take the bike for a ride. After 100 miles, which was a waste of time, I knew I had to send this new seat back. The Ultimate seat website states that their seats are the same dimensions as the OEM seat, and positions the rider in the same place. That is not true. The "pocket" on this Ultimate seat is exactly 2" forward compared to the OEM seat. I felt like I was riding up on the tank. The quasi-back rest/butt rest at the back end of the seat is very much exaggerated in a forward position. I was hoping to TRY this seat on my ride next week to northern Calif., and if the seat worked, then I could cancel my appointment at Russell to have them build seat # 10 for me. I truly and honestly wanted this seat to work...because it would have saved me $ 300.00 off the cost of the Russell seat, when I include tarvel, motel, etc. Now, I know...there are different seats for different butts. And if you have an Ultimate seat...and you like it, that is great. I am happy for you. And if you have a Corbin seat, and also like it, I am happy for you too. But for me, the Ultimate seat now has the title of the worst seat in the world, followed closely by Corbin. There is a reason that 80 % of the bikes at the start of an IronButt Rally have a Russell saddle on them. I know that Terry and the folks at Russell can build a seat for me...in person...that will allow me to be comfortable riding 1500 mile days. I hate to spend the extra bucks, but in this case, you truly do get what you pay for. That new Ultimate seat that showed up at noon today, will be shipped out tomorrow morning...back to Florida.

Redneck and Red Rider...and all the other Red's out there... The R1200GS is a very good bike. I had a 2005 R12GS, and loved it. It was a bit heavy in the dirt, but the ergonomics of the bike are great. Many riders use the R/GS platform as a great endurance/long distance bike, as in IronButt Rallies and endurance rallies. There are so many aftermarket accessories for these bikes. There are some mechanical issues to be aware of, but overall a good bike. I sold mine...missed it (doesn't that always happen) and now I have a Yamaha Super Tenere' in my lineup. The S10 (that what we all call it) is a very good bike, and I do not anticipate the mechanical issues the beemer had, and a lot lower cost of ownership on the S10. Before you buy a BMW R1200GS, take a close look at the Yamaha S10.

AtlantaDragonSlayer, at this point, after much communication and verification with the principle officials at the IBA, I have been informed that the IBA is 100 % certain that they are not a sponsor or partner of this ride, and that the IBA has extremely serious doubts as to whether the AMA and the Guinness W.R. have any affiliation with this ride. It is not uncommon for a person, in any facet of society, to embellish upon their standing or purpose, to further themself in the action of their cause. Furthermore, I have been informed to say nothing further on the subject, because it has now become a legal matter between the IBA and the organization representing the rider of the 25k in 25 days. Thank you, and I shall say no more on the subject.
