150-70 rear tire?
SilvrT replied to Yammy's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The following comes from TireRack.com NOTE: what I highlited in red below .... this suggests that if the rim size is the same then all tires having a "225" section width should be the same distance across. That being said, then they should all be the same height @ say 50 as in the example below. -SilvrT Section Width Following the letter(s) that identify the type of vehicle and/or type of service for which the tire was designed, the three-digit numeric portion identifies the tire's "Section Width" (cross section) in millimeters. P225/50R16 91S The 225 indicates this tire is 225 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. Because many people think of measurements in inches, the 225mm can be converted to inches by dividing the section width in millimeters by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch). 225mm / 25.4 = 8.86" Sidewall Aspect Ratio Typically following the three digits identifying the tire's Section Width in millimeters is a two-digit number that identifies the tire's profile or aspect ratio. P225/50R16 91S The 50 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 50% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 225mm and that its section height is 50% of 225mm. By converting the 225mm to inches (225 / 25.4 = 8.86") and multiplying it by 50% (.50) we confirm that this tire size results in a tire section height of 4.43". If this tire were a P225/70R16 size, our calculation would confirm that the size would result in a section height of 6.20", approximately a 1.8-inch taller sidewall. Just thought I'd throw this into the "pot". Someone with some time might want to got to different tire mfg's websites using a specific tire size and see what each mfg lists as actual width and height for that tire. It's an interesting subject - SilvrT -

150-70 rear tire?

Get ahold of our member "Pecker" as he runs that size. -
I certainly agree with this and it applies to all tire brands I would think. Having said that, I have brand new tires front and rear, both the same brand, 130 front and 150 rear yet I still get this squirrely "stuff" happening. My conclusion then is, the brand of tire can also make a difference since others report that they don't experience this. This'll teach me to try a cheap brand I guess.... ; however, as stated above, I'm going back to the 150 and installing levelling links. We'll see what happens ... even with a cheap tire LOL

150-70 rear tire?

I suppose ... at what speed were you lugging? Why not just drop down to 4th ... that's what I do ... take it up to about 110 km/h (appx 68 mph) and then upshift to 5th ... won't be lugging then. -

....and what's wrong with 5th gear that it needs help??? -
Update... Considering that the bike now has this "squirrelly" feel to it, I am switching back to the 150 and installing levelling links this winter. Pending the outcome of that will determine which "mod" I stick with. (a man's gotta experiment yanno ;-) ... variety is the spice of life they say...)

I thought this paragraph is well worth posting as most, if not all "non-bikers" really have no concept of this .... "Riding a bike is not at all like driving a car; you must rest both your body and your mind far more often. The degree of concentration required to stay safe means maintaining an acute sense of the road, traffic, weather, temperature, mechanical changes and your own body. Throw on a passenger, and the calculations rise."

I believe that was for the keyboard ... the mouse used a 9 pin serial port if I recall correctly. For a long time, I had a few 5 pin DIN - PS2 convertor cables plus a few extension cords ... dunno why I held onto them for so long ... finally chucked them about a year ago LOL.

yep... I tried an '03 Wing and that pretty much sold me ... just haven't decided yet if I want to invest more money ... (invest ??? what am I saying?? LOL) ... what I really mean is "borrow". My RSMV is almost paid for and the question is, do I really want to be making payments again?... kinda struggling with that one. My only issue with the Wing is the seat ... found it very uncomfortable. Other than that, it is an awesome ride!

Glad to hear the good news Brian! Enjoy the riding while you can. I'm hoping we will get an opportunity to get out for a ride before the real crappy weather kicks in around here; however, we have a rain warning for today and the rest of the weekend ain't looking so good either. All indications are that we're in for a real crappy winter.

I had an old guy (older 'n me that is) ask me what model of Harley mine was.... I told him it's a YAMAHARLEY .... "nice lookin" he replied... and strolled off...

It may be the fluid-clutch driven cooling fan for the rad. This makes it sound like the motor is revving but ya ain't really accelerating like it sounds it should be. I had the same thing on my '94 3.9L Dakota. Roared like crazy when starting off.... kept on like that for a while and then once the fan clutch released, quieted right down. It also sucked the power big time. I thought they changed these by 2002? Anyway, I replaced it and the new one did the same thing so then I drilled a hole and let the fluid escape so the fan was free-running all the time... that was fine but had overheating problems when I had to sit in heavy traffic on hot days. Finally got rid of the fan altogether and installed a thermostat controlled electric fan. Problem solved! btw, I now have a '96 Dakota with the V8 ... get a bit of that symptom explained above but not for long and definately no lack of power in this puppy.

I refuse to comment on the grounds that it might incriminate me ... or something more revealing! :rotf: :rotf:

Liquid cooled tho ... that's a plus. I like the Victory Cross-Country a whole lot better.

Interesting... looks like they've gone back to the old-style side bags. I like them better than the ones they put on the new Voyager and Nomad. I'm not so fond of the "blacked-out" look tho ... gimme CHROME!

we got eaten alive by mosquitos while we waited for our part to be shot .... where was my stunt double then?? LOL ya, I'm looking fwd to seeing "ours" too... haven't yet -
I had an '83 Aspencade (1100 cc). Rode it for 6 years and sold it for more than I paid for it. Great bike. Had a clunking in the front when hitting a hard bump. Had to replace the complete rear end and the front wheel bearings. Other than that, it never failed. Even pulled a trailer with no problems.
