  1. A lot of things can affect the color of the oil ... even the brand of gas you use. Operating under heavy load conditions...such as pulling a trailer ... how clean are your air filters? Did you try a different brand of oil? When did you change plugs last... sync carbs,... etc, etc Frankly, I rarely worry about the oil color. Now, if I see blue smoke or I notice a significant drop in oil level in, say 2000-3000 miles, then I start getting concerned. When I change oil, I always run it until warm right after adding the new oil... then let it cool down and re-check the level and top up as necessary, never going much higher than the 1/2 way mark ... max to about 3/4 on the sight glass. Hope it's only a misleading thing for you coz these engines shouldn't have oil consumption (burning or otherwise) issues for well over 100,000 miles.
  2. Regarding burning oil and blue smoke, an old method we used to use to determine if it was valve seals or oil rings is, if blue smoke is coming out when you decelerate, then it's valve seals.... if it's pumping blue when you accelerate, then it's oil rings (Not a real accurate method but a good indicator). Similarly, if it pumps blue for a bit when you start it, after sitting for a while... then the blue goes away, it's probably valve seals.
  3. I'd suggest you don't panic but keep a close eye on the oil level between this change and the next one. If it's gone down significantly, then start looking into why.

I don't think "Mr Krabs" i such a good handle... kinda infers certain things to certain minded folk.... me... SilvrT = Silver Tongue Devil .... and I ain't sharing how or by whom or for what reason that got bestowed on me
  5. Now if you could just add some chrome to that engine.... I'll take one!!
  6. To be honest, you really can't go wrong with an RSV ... even though I beatch & whine and grumble about this, that, and the other thing, and imply that I'm going to go buy a Wing or some other brand .... I look at my RSMV with admiration and pride... and every time I ride it ... all those grumblings simply disappear. All that I can think of right now is that by May next year, it will be paid for and all the new "safety chrome" I will be able to then afford, not to mention the goodies I will be adding during this coming winter. She sits in my garage just waiting for a nice warm day ... while she sits there, I mount her and dream of days past while I was riding her. (no playing on my words guyz... LOL)
  7. This is where you bolt the bracket to the mufflers right? Weird... mine were on for 2 seasons and that's all I used was a short bolt and a lock washer. Good idea to check em tho
  8. very strange... have you used the right size lock washers? Was it a star type? Were they for right or left thread? I've never seen or heard of a bolt coming loose when there's a lock washer. Was the lock washer between the bolt head and a flat washer (this may be the reason it came loose)?
  9. I use "wazzup" to get around such smartazz remarks ....
  10. sounds interesting... so where does a person get ahold of one of these "hidden" antenna's (coz I can't seem to find where you "hid" that info in your post...

    Got one!

hmmmmmmmmmm.... so that's why I'm getting shorter... :rotf:
  12. I honestly don't remember what kind of paint it was ... just something I had in my drawer of rattle cans. As for prep, I just cleaned the surface real good with laquer thinner and masked the underside. Leave the key cover in exactly the spot where you want it to be when closed. I think I applied 3 coats of paint, the first one being a medium coat. I'm not even sure if I used a primer or not... geeeesh, it's been over 2 years now .... I can't even remember yesterday most of the time I should mention that I am real careful with it soas not to scratch it... but what the heck, if ya do scratch the paint a bit, just wet sand that down and shoot it again. Like I said, I don't have any scratches or chipping yet after 2 years (years being riding seasons).
  13. What he said.... :D
  14. since CD's were appearing that early, one might wonder why a CD player wasn't standard on a 1990 model???
  15. That's probably because the 2009 manual is nothing more than a copy of the 1999 one. Seems only logical that if there's no updates to the bike, then why update the owner's manual??
  16. The 2 oils I find work best are Rotella T non-synthetic and Castrol GTX M/C oil. I've tried several others including synthetic. Others no doubt will have differing opinions. For me, I had to try several until I found what I liked ... unfortunately, it was a costly "venture".
  17. do like I did and paint it flat black ... 2nd year and still no sign of deterioration or chipping... ...Oh yeah!!!
  18. ...and HD owners have this misconception that Harleys have a better resale value. yup!!! ... I used to wish I didn't have to shampoo and blow-dry/style my hair every morning..... look at me now!!!
  19. As you "ride past them..." ... your sure it's "looks of admiration" and not looks of "hey guys, there's one of those bikes that they still put cassettes in... guffaw..guffaw" We oftentimes stop at a couple "biker hangouts" on our day rides around here. Most of the bikes that are there are Harleys with a sprinkling of other makes and most of the time, there's quite a lot of bikes. I almost always check out the other bikes, especially those that are done up quite nice, talk to some of the owners, etc ... rarely has anyone came over to "admire" my scoot. That is not to say it hasn't ever happened tho. Truthfully, I'm not embarassed that I ride an RSV but more that it's embarassing that Yamaha is still putting cassettes in their current model. Guess I should have clarified that more.
  20. ya... I don't know why they put those stripes on the helmets. Nina has seen the commercial but I still haven't. She watches more TV than I do ... might have something to do with that LOL
  21. Yes, I get that fairly often too. Guess you need to spend more time around these parts This is true but, it does not detract from the fact that such a response (as I posted) could be made by someone.
  22. heh ... I recently removed my RK's coz I was getting tired of the loudness, especially when climbing hills or pulling the trailer. I had all the baffles drilled out tho so they're quite a bit louder than stock RK's. Might look for another "new" set (with baffles) one day tho.
  23. Really? So how do you account for "all those features" being costly when a 2011 RSV-S has an MSRP of $20,200 Compare that to the Kaw Voyager ... $17,500 Or the Harley Ultra Classic... $19,500 c'mon guys... quit letting your pride get in the way of reality.
  24. yep... I went to Vista too ... and almost dumped my scanner... but I set my system up to dual-boot and have pretty much been running winXP since (coz Vista suks)... so I was able to continue using the scanner.
