  1. Thur nov 11 Rememberance day and an old soldiar is again fighting for his life. For some reason tues night he was moved back into the ward and on top of that they failed to hook him up to his antibiotic IV until nine hours later. When my brother questioned the nurse the why they were not hooking him up, she kind of swore under her breath and then told him they had to wait for the doctors reassement in the morning. Then when he approached the head nurse the next day the head nurse showed my brother the log which stated he was on the IV all along. At this point my brother informed her that he was there and that there was not even a pole in the room until past noon the following day. Late wed afternoon Dad stopped breathing again and was Rushed back into ICU were is again stable. Through all this he is still fighting a bad infection and pnuemonia. to say the least its being a real roller coaster ride, and with me also having a touch of pnuemonia I have not seen him in almost a week which makes things real hard. Fri nov 12 they had to put a breathing tube in him again because he is too weak to breath on his own. His white blood cell count is coming down again, this is a good thing it means the antibiotics are helping. Mentally ( when he is not sedated ) he is doing a little bit better. They have to sedate him because if they do not, he will not sleep and then he gets restless and tries to pull out his tubes. I still have pneumonia so I am not allowed in the hospital, but I talk to my Mon and Brothers everyday. It is very hard not being allowed to see him and hope to get better as soon as possible so I can again start visiting him.
  2. This morning (Friday) they sedated Nate so they could change his dressings and then do his dialysis. Both things Nate tolerated well This evening (Friday) at approx 6:00 p.m. they removed Nates breathing tube. He could finally talk. I was able to hear my husbands voice once again. Nathan has at this point 'accepted' what has happened and remembers me telling him. (I'm sure there will be many more frustrating and difficult days ahead - but we are thankful for the positive day we were blessed with) Nates biggest concern was food, and how we could sneak food into him. As you may have guessed he still has many sedatives still in his blood stream and was making some funny comments due to them. He is eager to see his too children Taryn and Aiden tomorrow morning (Sat morning) This may be a bit scary for them.

  4. No the power from the acc. terminal only serves to turn the relay off and on. Think of the relay as a switch controlling the heavier wires, which supply power to the lights. think of the smaller ground and acc. wires as the fingers flipping that switch.
  5. Hey its not the end of the world. Its just a time out. Besides you will have so much fun with being a Dad, that before you know it, you will be back in the saddle. Besides you can always upgrade to 1st gen, and at a fraction of the cost. Congratulations

  8. Actually today most vehicles and almost all big rigs use ground switching. Kenworth trucks started using back in the eightys. The reason for this is, A) it reduces live runs and B) reduces amount of wire. C) reduces the risk of an electrical fire as mentioned in my earlier post. Today much of the circuits are controlled by on board ECM's and computers. Possitve battery power will be fed directly to the component, while the ground side of the component will be fed to the ECM. The ECM then internaly controls the circuit by switching the ground off or on as required. This is why today when diagnosing electrical faults, a thorough inspection of all grounds is the first step. With reguards to putting a switch on the ground side. The switch is NOT installed on the ground side of the light, BUT installed on the relay's control ground, and therfore not affected by the way the light itself is grounded. If the switch has a light you run pos to the third terminal if cuting into the relay's ground wire, and ground to the third terminal if cutting into the relays positive control wire. This does not however apply to switches using led lights as they are polarity sensitive.

This is a good point Dingy just to make it clear if the relay has two 87 terminals both would be normally open, but if it has an 87 terminal and an 87a terminal . 87 would be normally open while 87a is normally closed. in other words 87 would complete a connection when signal power is applied while 87a would open a connection when power is applied. Handy if you want to divert power from say a road light to a fog light with the flip of a switch. P/S Dingy, that is a nice right up (relay's 101). Hope you don't mind me sharing it with my apprentices at work. The reason I prefer the to run the switch on the ground side is because, installing an additional switch on the positve side requires runing extra wire to and from the switch increasing the number of positve wires that could possible rub through to ground, causing a short. were as placeing the switch on the ground side requires only that you run a wire from the relay to the switch and to the nearest ground. This reduces the amount of wire used, and resulting in fewer chances of a live wire rubbing through to ground. If a ground wire should rub through, it would not result in a live short. The worst thing that can happen if the ground wire shorted to ground and only if it is a switched ground is cause the light for example to stay on and if unnoticed run the battery down. This is good since these types of shorts almost never result in an electrical fire. were a shorted pos wire can. Yes all wiring should be properly run and protected but not everyone is a perfectionist and stuff sometimes happens. As a matter fact you can actually run a short jumper from pin 30 to pin 85 then run a wire from pin 86to a switch and fro the switch to the nearest ground and you would come close to eliminating 50% of your wiring. A NOTE!! No matter which method one chooses fuses should always be installed in the positve wire and as close to the source of power as is practical.
  10. We have one of those thin paper hooks were if more than 1 foot of paper hangs below the roll it starts to unspool on the floor. The other day I came up with a brainstorm. Before mounting the roll I slightly flatten the roll so the center is egg shaped thus stopping it from turning, except when pulling off some paper. Now my wife say's that thats just wrong, no reason, just wrong, so she will reform the roll and next thing there is a pile of paper on the floor. Can someone explain to me why my idea could possibly be wrong when it saves paper from being wasted.
  11. Scala makes headsets that use very thin speakers just a little larger than a quarter. I use it on all of my helmets. the speaker has velcro on the back and simply sticks to the lining in the helmet. just choose a spot were you won't notice it.The pic below is my half helmet with one mounted in it. the sound is by the way is excelent.

  13. Sorry to hear about you wiping out , but glad you came through uninjured. I almost wiped out the same way once, only I was making a left hand turn in a intersection. My rear tire slide out from under me and the only thing that kept me from going down was some fast counter steering (which had nothing to do with skill it was just a reflex action I cannot explain), followed by some really scary wobbly's. The thing is the intersection looked fine but when I went back to look I found I hit a diesil fuel spill that was almost invisible.
  14. CATHOLIC GOLF Catholic or not you have to laugh at this one. A Catholic priest and a nun were taking a rare afternoon off and enjoying a round of golf. The priest stepped up to the first tee and took a mighty swing. He missed the ball entirely and said "****, I missed." The good Sister told him to watch his language. On his next swing, he missed again. "****, I missed." "Father, I'm not going to play with you if you keep swearing," the nun said tartly.. The priest promised to do better and the round continued. On the 4th tee, he misses again. The usual comment followed. Sister is really mad now and says, "Father John, God is going to strike you dead if you keep swearing like that." On the next tee, Father John swings and misses again. "****, I missed." A terrible rumble is heard and a gigantic bolt of lightning comes out of the sky and strikes Sister Marie dead in her tracks.. read on And from the sky comes a booming voice ...... "****, I missed."
  15. Yes this is a basic hook up for any vehicle from bikes to big riggs. However there are a lot of variations that you can do, by revising the wiring and/or adding multiple relays, and even using the 87a terminal. It all depends on what it is you want to accomplish. I once had to use three relays in a single circuit I designed to overide the wiring system in a big rigg for a speacial function related to some equipment mounted on the rigg. The terminal numbers I used are found on the more common automotive relays, these being used on about 80% of all vehicles, both on shore and off shore. There are however some relays that differ but in all cases you would have at least 2 control terminals 1 supply terminal and 1 load terminal. And of course there are thousands of special purpose relay's out there that perform multiple functions.
  16. Very simple and will work for any bike. Most common relay will have the terminals numbered as such 30, 85, 86, 87, and may or maynot include 87a The simple way to wire it is as such. 1. Term. 30 direct to Battery. use at least 16 gauge wire with inline fuse properly rated for your lights about 15 amp 2. Term. 87 Directly to your additional lights. Also use at least 16 gauge wire. 3. term. 85 connect to acc., or ign., this will use the key off and on to turn the relay off and on in turn switching the lights off and on. 18 gauge wire will be fine here as there is no load other than the relay. 4. Term 86 connect to ground or batt neg. ( you can also put a small switch on this wire to use as an overide should you want to shut down the lights for any reason.) 18 gauge wire here as well 5. term 87a if your relay has it simply ignore

  18. A little better news today. They took the breathing tube out of him today and he is able to breath on his own, with the help of an oxygen mask. they also did a catscan and even though the infection is still bad it apears to be contained in a confined area. He also tried talking today but his voice is not working properly, most likly because of having a tube in his throat and it may take a little bit of time before he gets his voice back

Lam 3: 22-23 Nathan has once again been sustained through the night and day. They removed the paralizing medication yestarday morning, and today they changed one of his sedation medication. As of now Nate is breathing on his own with minimal support from the ventilator. They are hoping to change his dialysis to intermittent sometime in the very near future. Nate is one approx 3 different antibiotics to combat infections. They are not sure of where the infections are but because Nate has so many different areas where infection can be present. We are thankful each moment we can spend with Nate and can see how richly our Heavenly Father has blessed us. Please continue to pray for Nate, myself and our families. Also continue to remember to pray for the doctors and nurses. Nate has had 2 nurses at his bedside since he has arrived, for this alone we can be ever thankful. I have been notified a few minutes ago that I no longer have my own room. This mean I will not be able to blog myself always. Please bear with us in this regard as well. Tomorrow is not only Nathan and my anniversary it is also a very joyful day as we D.V. will witness the union of my brother Scott to Michelle Ravensbergen. Please pray for them as well. "I know that you can do all things; no plan of your can be thwarted." Job 42:2
  21. Early Wed morning Dad stopped breathing and would not wake up, they had to rush him to emergency ICU. He went into a sort of coma and was hooked up to life support and breathing machine because His lungs were not working, Due to a lung infection. The Doctors took us into a conference were they explained how serious his condition was and gave him a 50% chance of pulling through. Late wed. Night he opened his eyes again and was able to recognize us. They then gave him a sedative to keep him calm. I stayed in his room all night and for the most part he slept. Whenever he did wake up, he would look at me and wink then he would hold my hand and keep squeezing it. So far he is hanging in there. The infection of one of the incisions was very bad and they are working very hard to clean it up. Apparently this is still of a major concern since they cannot go in surgically to attack it. Also his lungs have a lot of fluid in them and for that reason he has to stay on the breathing machine which they are hoping to remove sat or sun. With luck he will breathe on his own but if not they may have to put a trachea tube in him to help him breathe.

  23. Nathan had a 'good' night last night. They seem to have gotten his breathing a little more under control, but have had to give him medication for pain and sedation. Nate did not need any more blood products through the night and his hemoglobin has come up a bit. I'm not sure what the plan is for Nate today but hopefully it is to let his body rest and get some strength. Much thanks for your continued prayers. Please hold us in your prayers and pray for the hands of the doctors and nurses as well. During this time Nate has been given large amounts of blood products, which have helped to give Nate a fighting chance. Nates wife has asked that people everywere give Blood, so that others too, should they need it, may also have a fighting chance.
