  1. When they describe it as a 'Midnight Venture' are they referring to the acquisition time or the accessories? Mike
  2. This was a very traumatic event for those directly involved and for you. I know we men are tough and just get over things but seek out a grief counselor and talk to him for an hour. It will be time well spent. The local PD should be able to direct you. Mike
  3. Yamaha recommends against it. But it must happen often enough for them to bring it up in the owners manual. That said I hardly ever used the clutch on my old Honda 350. So far I have resisted the no clutch urge on the Venture even though there have been times I thought about it. Some how it just seems like there are to many things that could be twisted or broken and this bike is my baby. Mike
  4. I spotted an RSV stopped for the red light west bound on HWY-516, Kent DesMoines Road, at HWY-99 about 12:30pm today. I couldn't help but wonder if it was anyone from VentureRider.org? Mike
  5. There are times when a good accident attorney is invaluable. This is one of them. You need to be compensated for your injuries as well as the bike. Mike
  6. Thanks LilBeaver. I have the service manuals for the CB radio and the Clarion DC625CD changer. With this info I can have the CB adjusted for the correct modulation and power output. And I can troubleshoot the wiring to the cd changer if needed. (as in modify it for an mp3 or gps etc) Hopefully I can find manuals for the rest of the system. It is nice to actually know what each pin on a connector is for. The Yamaha service manual wiring schematic only shows the wires to the white rectangular 18 pin connector. It does not show a pinout for any of the round 5, 11 or 13 pin connectors. No wonder the dealer techs have such a hard time troubleshooting the audio system. I have had two problems repaired under warranty. One a pinched harness and the other a bad plug at the blue 13 pin connector coming out of the MCU. That is the one to the riders remote control. It was causing all kinds of weird intermittent lock-up problems. Mike
  7. If it is your 2009 RSV take to the dealer and have them check it. It is still under warranty if it is the Silverado check the u-joints.
  8. Does anyone know the Clarion model numbers for the radio mcu and cassette player on a second generation Venture? I am to old, slow and tired to pull the fairing for a look see. So I am hoping someone knows the numbers. I am trying to locate Clarion service manuals for them. Thanks Mike
  9. I feel for the guy. Everyone is a beginner at some time in their life and even an experienced rider can find a ditch now and then. To bad he had to pay his dues up front. It is a good story he will be able to tell for a long time. Mike
  10. These bikes don't need another gear. Both 4th and 5th are already technically 'overdrive' gears: In 4th the output shaft is turning SLIGHTLY faster than the crankshaft, and in 5th it is turning quite a bit faster. Fourth gear at 24/25 (.960/1) is so close to 1/1 it is not worth quibbling over. But you are right fifth is overdrive and it provides a good power band. I would still like to have a sixth gear. Shorten the first five a little and add a sixth would be ideal or change to a lower final drive and add a sixth. They could use the v-max final drive as it is already in production. Or just add a sixth. I'm sorry but on a straight and level road nothing improves fuel economy like lower rpm. If you are on and off the throttle for hills and curves where lugging is an issue sure third or fourth are better options but I would like to have a sixth on the bike. My personal opinion and I am sticking to it. Mike
  11. It is a good idea to determine if the problem is with the cables or the carbs. On occasion carbon can deposit on the throttle shafts and cause sticking. Sometimes techs will lube the shafts and return springs with spray grease. A good idea but it can cause dirt to accumulate on the linkage and sometimes things will get sticky. If this turns out to be the problem and you decide to clean things with spray carburetor cleaner make sure all plastic parts are removed or covered. Go ahead ask me how I know. Mike
  12. It is the fastest color too.
  13. A couple of friends and I recently went on a trip around Mts. St Helens and Rainier. There was one 2009 Ultra Glide, a 2010 Victory and my 2008 Venture. We rode some nice twisties and some straight stretches. In the end I averaged 47.04 mpg with my old carburetor technology while the Victory did 46 mpg to the Ultras 42 mpg. To be fair the Ultra had a 102 kit installed which hadn't been properly tuned yet. What was most noticeable though was in the 40 to 55 mph twisties my Venture was far better in mileage than either of the other two bikes. But on the freeway over about 65 mph the lack of a sixth gear really showed and both of the other bikes got better mileage than me for that portion of the trip. All in all I don't think I am ready to trade in the carbs yet but a sixth gear sure would be nice. Mike
  14. There has been a lot of discussion on which pin does what. This is the 13 pin c-bus breakout from the clarion DC625 service manual. Perhaps this will help. Mike

  16. Won't hurt a thing. It is one of my favorite ways of connecting leds on a bike. With the addition of a resistor and a diode you could make the rear work with the brake light as well. Mike
  17. Had the same problem. The best solution is practice, practice, practice. Find a parking lot and make it your own. Every chance you get. Don't try to over push your envelope and get all stressed out. Just have fun. Take your time, create little challenges and practice them. Just don't try to do it all in one day. It will eventually come. I have found that since the anxiety is gone I now enjoy the low speed stuff. Ride Safe Mike
  18. Think they moved the CB antenna or just got it wrong for the photo-op. Mike
  19. This is very sad. Condolences for the loss of your friend. Mike
  20. You have to understand when drivers tailgate you it is because they are constipated. They really do have to get somewhere fast. And being in their way is not a good idea. Knowing this, I just move over and let them go around. Mike
  21. Take the front fairing off and very carefully wiggle test all of the connectors. Here is a chart that might help. I found my blue stripe connector to the controller had a bad connection when wiggled. 22. Me too. Section seven 'Periodic Maintenance and Minor Repair' calls for 600,4000,8000,12000,16000,20000 miles then repeat from 8K. Mine is a 2008 manual. What is yours? Mike
  23. Gota go with Randy on this one. Mike
  24. I don't know what book you are looking at but mine says change the oil every 4,000 miles or six months. Mike
  25. The list and intervals I posted were from the RSV owners manual. I did this mostly for warranty validation. And to make it easier for me to check off required maintenance. Feel free to add those things which you feel are important. Mike
