  1. I got the CMU panel out and the LCD display and examined the circuit board. Everything looked clean with no indication of corrosion and nothing on the circuit board looked cooked or at all unusual. Hooked all the connections together but no joy, the red warning light is lit and the backlight for the display is lit and the neutral light is lit however still no output from the display. I've never been particularly good at soldering so I'm hesitant to try soldering the display circuit board without having a good reason to do it. While in storage the display worked properly over the course of about a year. A couple of months after I had last looked at it, the display was not working. Something happened while it was just sitting there. Could there be a fuse or possibly a bad ground connection somewhere that would disable all the readouts without cutting all the power to the CMU? I'm under the gun if I want to get this thing working so I can attend Cody.
  2. I'm not sure if we got our wires crossed and you probably know this but anyway, iTunes will sync with the iPod but essentially only one way. Whatever music, playlist arrangement is on the computer gets transferred to the iPod. Music cannot be transferred from the iPod to the computer. Kinda annoying but solved by 3rd party software that will download the music directly to your computer. The music can then be put back into iTunes or not, as you wish. Pretty much what I said before but thought I'd clarify. Thanks for the link to Floola, it does more than the software I purchased and is free. Very cool.
  3. I don't know anything about the FJ1300 but came across this article about the local police choosing the Honda ST1300 over the FJR1300, among others. http://www.roadrunner.travel/article-5893.php Not too much detail there but you might find it to be of some help.
  4. Oh, should have guessed. MLO is certainly easier to spell than dielectric grease.
  5. Well that makes sense with the plug being so obstinate the solder joints probably get torqued while removing. If they weren't cracked already they probably are now.
  6. A squirt of WD40 worked wonders in getting the connectors to wiggle enough to rock them apart. Non of the connectors looked the least bit corroded. Never heard of MLO.

    Virago's

The rear cylinder runs hotter because it does not get as much airflow as the front one. The needles in the carbs are supposed to be different sizes to supply more fuel to to help cool the back cylinder. I've read of people changing to a gravity feed when their fuel pump quits. Don't know much about it but seem to recall doing that only sort works and getting down below a 1/4 tank will also cause starvation to the back carb, I think, which will cause it to cut out. Make sure the fuel line is routed straight as possible to aid in fuel flow. I've never heard of this issue with carb kits, perhaps Yamaha is clearing out old stock that they can't get rid of any other way. It might be Yamaha dealers or just a dealer doing it though. I'd be looking for the proper kit.
  8. The difficulty separating the plugs was overcome by using WD40 and all the CMU wire connectors looked good but I sprayed them with electrical cleaner anyway. I now have the LCD display out of the CMU. Could a blown fuse be the cause of no LCD display? The warning light is the only thing that lights up when the ignition is on. Looked at this thread on the CMU removal and soldering on a MK1: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33328 Hopefully it is the same as doing it on a MK2. Is it the strips indicated that need to be soldered or the connections (bumps)?
  9. Not sure what you mean here but iTunes will not download music from an iPod, it will only upload to it. Which means if for any reason you lose the music on your computer you can't rescue it from your iPod. Unless of course you buy some relatively inexpensive 3rd party software that will allow you to download from the iPod. I found this out when I had a HD crash with all my music on it. Can't remember what the software is that I got but it was about $12 from FutureShop about 6 years ago. Haven't needed it since. At home I play all my music with iTunes on my Windows Media Center. It will take music files from a CD or DVD and convert them to .mp3 format and save them to the HD. Initially I got iTunes because I got an iPod but found it worked great and was free. I'm sure there are other apps that will do the same just as well but it works for me and I like the way it does it. I prefer Windows and the only things I have from Apple is the iPod and iTunes.
  10. Practicing what has already been mentioned will get you there but in the mean time when you need to put a foot down because you have lost your balance make it a quick dab then back on the peg. Put your foot down forward and and the bike's motion will bring your leg to vertical by the time you lift it. Otherwise your foot can get caught up in the kick stand or saddle bags. You may also find a little body "English" will help fine tune your balance.
  11. That's the method I was using to do it but since it wouldn't budge I did wonder if there was something that I could not see that was holding it together. Now that I know there isn't I'll apply more patience, some WD40 and perhaps some pliers. Sometimes it is the little things in life that cause an inordinate amount of grief. Thanks skydoc.
  12. So I got the CMU loose but I'm having difficulty getting the plugs out of the back to release it completely. They don't seem to want to budge. Is there some trick to unplugging them?
  13. Very timely post and will probably be helpful to asigetic as well. This afternoon I started to clean up the connections around the battery area then pulled the windshield off and started looking around for the way to remove the front fairing. Got stumped - duh - so I came in here to read the manual on how to proceed. Got a feeling the fairing might have to come off to get at the rest of the connectors I can see but can't reach. For now though I just have to figure out how to get the headlight off. Thanks for the heads up.
  14. You don't really need to ask for his address. Click on one of the pix of the bike in the garage then click on the "i" button, scroll down to the bottom for the LAT/LONG and enter that into google and you know where he lives. Interesting little feature of phone cameras don't you think?
  15. Not that I have had any experience working on a Venture but I've been reading the forums for quite a while. Yesterday I removed my '90 VR from storage, where it has been sitting for over a year, and rode it to my workshop. I am about to embark on the same journey you are. Mine runs, you did not indicate whether yours does or not. I stored it with Seafoam in the tank and had it on a float charger and it fired up first try. What happened during the time in storage is the display stopped functioning. Also, when I got it there was a problem with the neutral light and gear display shutting off after warming up. Those two things are first on my list. The lack of neutral light and gear display are symptoms of poor connections in the switch located inside the left cover. There could be other causes but that is the most common one and is supposed to be a fairly easy fix. The faulty computer display is also most commonly caused by poor connections. This one is apparently a bit of a headache to fix since it requires removal of the fairing to get at the computer and likely will need re-soldering of the connection joints. Check all wires for signs of overheating and clean all connections. Pay particular attention to the battery terminals and neg to ground connection. Clean what is there, neg term to engine, and add a second ground from the neg term to the frame using a #8 wire or larger. Changing "all" fluids is a good thing to do with an unknown history and is reasonably easy to do. If it's running OK, inspect the fuel tank for rust caused by condensation and change the fuel filtre. Cut the filtre open looking for signs of rust will also aid in assessing the state of the tank. Don't forget to check the fuel lines for swollen or punky rubber. If the engine runs but not properly, the carb's may be gobbed up with varnish. Drain the tank of any old fuel inspect tank and replace with a half tank of fresh fuel and half a can of Seafoam. If you can't get Seafoam in your area use about 4 oz any brand of camp fuel which is just naptha. This should clear up minor blockages in the carb's otherwise a tear down will likely be needed. Assuming the Mark I VR's have one, does the class system hold pressure? To make it work the ignition must be off and in the ACC position. There is more but that will be a very good start. The 1st gen Ventures are mostly the same but there are some specific differences between '83 and later Mark I and also between '86 and later Mark II. So do take the time to put the year and model of your bike in your profile. Doing so will be helpful to others in answering your questions.
  16. I had a look on the Ride for Dad website and could not find any mention of the poker run route. Doesn't matter much where it goes to I guess. Last year was great weather but the forecast is not so great this year. With the large number of participants I think it will be a bit difficult meeting up with people one has never met and have no idea what they look like. Anyway, unless you have a better idea than I do, I'll be on my black and white xv1100 which doesn't look much like a Virago anymore although it does still have the pods and is also decidedly scruffy at this point which should make it fairly recognizable. Also, if it's raining I'll be wearing my grey Teknic waterproof textile jacket. If you see an unfashionably dressed rider on such a unique bike it will probably be me.
  17. The Ride for Dad is an all day event, in two parts. The parade in the morning and a cruise somewhere for the afternoon. I'll be on my Virago.
  18. This year's Motorcycle Ride for Dad for Vancouver Island is on this coming Sunday. Is anyone in the area besides me going to attend? Would be nice to hook up if possible.
  19. This has not been substantiated but apparently it is made with high density rigid polyethylene. Here is a how to repair using a kayak as an example. http://www.kayak-repair-central.com/plastic-repair.html
  20. I think this is what you are after: http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=32074 I had some like the "A" version on my 58 TR3.
  21. Are you getting a qualified electrician to do the other wiring. You know, the kind that get "electrical permits" and finish with "electrical inspections". Anyway, electrical wholesalers will most likely have the wire for less than small box retailers. Don't forget to wire in a data line and an Internet connection to your router.
  22. There are a number of DVD's available from Ride Like a Pro. See their site here: http://www.ridelikeapro.com/store/instructional-dvds/browse/6-dvds?sef=hc
  23. Given the choice I will always pick the Postal Service but some companies will only ship by one of the courier services. Mostly it doesn't make much difference in Canada but it's significant when getting goods from the USA. FedEx and UPS both have charged me brokerage fees of $25-$30 while USPS has never done that. That amount of money almost negates the value of buying online from abroad.
  24. I"m first! I'm first! I am the first. It's like being royalty.
  25. How did I get to the top of the list without having heard anything from whoever had the DVD before me? Does that mean I'm next?
