  1. First of all good replies to the main question but have any of you thought to do the wide open throttle set up that is in the service manual? if the throttle plates are not opening fully the bike will not reach top speed. Just my suggestion Tiny if you are not getting enough vac on the upper side of the carbs the engine will not perform up to its full potential If the scoots only problem is top end I would not thing that the mini air filters would be the problem unless they are restricting the flow Jeff
  2. I am not sure of the number but am sure that it was mid year 1985 when the change was made. Jeff
  3. JC Yes the tranny will work I just put a 91 tranny in my 83. The temp gauge problem is either the sending unit (the flat connector) or the ground wire is unplugged. the warning light is for the brake fluid, refill all 3 reserviors and the warning should go away. Jeff
  4. Ray take any of the locks out and take it to a locksmith they can cut a key for it usually for around $25.00
  5. Scott if you unplug the cassete from the system lookin at the pins there are 2 that have a space between them bigger than the others the spacing is just enough to use a spade connector on if you do this the radio will work without the cassete if you need pics let me know and I will post some. Jeff
  6. Allen give me a call at 2524269691 so I can talk you through the switch removal Jeff
  7. I find that a 45 auto works real well on dogs that like to chase my bike. But not in the city limits. You have to be carfull out there it seems that 4 legged animals like to cross the path of a motorcycle (deer, bear, dogs) . Jeff
  8. Well what did you find Randy? good news or bad? Let us know. Jeff
  9. Indy it sounds like you are dealing with a wear issue in the tranny or linkage.Try goosing the throttle while putting the bike in nuetral it may help. Check for excessive wear (slop) to the linkage and pivot points and fix it if you find any. Jeff
  10. Jim if you have to replace the line get a middle gear cover gasket you will need it. Also use dot3 fluid not dot4 my local Yamaha shop said they have seen problems with the dot4 in some of the scoots around here. Jeff
  11. Allen if the emergency flashers work you will know that the wiring is ok to the lights if they work start with the turn signal switch before you spend big money on the flasher unit. the emergency flasher switch is on the right side black top panel up near the instrument panel. Jeff
  12. Don 1 first of all get some dielectric grease and put it in the blue pin sockets on the bike side of the removable part of the radio panel. That may stop the problem 2 it sounds like the problem light assembly has a ground problem remove the assembly and clean the mounting surface and light assembly if that does not fix it then more than likely the lightbulb sockets are bad. do these things and PM me if you still need troubleshooting help. Jeff
  13. Allen do the emergency flashers work?
  14. Jim it sounds like the rubber line may be swelling with the heat it is a comon problem on our scoots normally I would say to flush the line with new fluid and that should take care of it but with a recent service I would say that the line is the problem. Jeff
  15. Not to bad I was planning on running straight pipes on my spare 83 along with a few other mods cant wait to hear mine with straight pipes. Jeff
  16. I really hate to be the one to have to post this but if it is not the linkage I would suspect the shifter forks they may be bent. Out of the 4 that I have done 2nd gear in only 1 fork had been bent. It is possible that forcing the transmmission to shift caused one or both forks to get bent. I hope for your sake that it is in the linkage otherwise the motor will have to come out to fix this problem. With a properly shifting transmission I can upshift and downshift without the clutch. Jeff
  17. John Welcome to the best website on the internet. To answer your question from the saddlebag crashgaurds forward all of the plastic is the same other than the headlight. as lonf as like Condor said you stick with the same type IE Royale standard ect. the main differences in the 86 to 93 from the 83 to 85 is in the rear bags. You have what we all know to be a great machine and the 83's are the fastest. Enjoy the bike and the website and dont be affraid to ask any question you may have Jeff
  18. Lewis go back to sleep Froggy did not remove the Valve cover so I would not suspect the gasket.
  19. Froggy I would suspect the oil leak to be either from the slave cyl ( deteriorated rubber) or the shifter seal Jeff
  20. The computer board in the dash could also have bad solder joints you may want to resolder the board as the headlight voltage goes through it. Jeff
  21. Ok what did you do to the bike? You know the warranty is out on the repairs so now we get into your money for repairs.LOL
  22. You may have a weak spring or more than likely you need to take the hard plates back out and put a non directional finish on them. I use a DA sander with 220 grit paper to do this but Gerald and Dan did it by hand and I believe it worked good for them. Jeff
  23. Clay get together with Lewis on the swr meter The Cb worked fine before the new headsets so I would think that maybe the headsets are the problem. Jeff
  24. Have you tried putting the kickstand up? The switch may be acting up. Jeff
  25. Don being man enough to admit to making the mistake is punishment enough. Get yourself on the scoot and take the wife to DQ and we will forgive you for not getting it right the first 2 times. Jeff
