I'm shocked to hear about the news. Be careful my fellow riders. RIP Bruce. Ride Safe.

Lets talk load equalizers!
N3FOL replied to Tartan Terror's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I think for your application, you will need a 'Metric - Signal Load Stabilizer' and you will only need one (1) from Custom Dynamics as I've only installed one Stabilizer on my bike to take care of the front and rear LEDs that I installed. I've done three oil changes on my RSV using Valvoline 10W40 moto oil. After reading several threads that talked about Oil in general, Rotella 20W50 or 15W40 (not sure what Advance Auto Carry) has always caught my attention. It sure it cheaper than Valvoline 10W40 moto oil and I can get it from SAMs club or Advance Auto. At this point in time, I am 50/50 in my decision whether to try out Rotella on my next oil change w/c may come by the end of August '09. So, who is using Rotella dino oil and what weight on their 2nd gen Venture? How many miles so far...(please convince me that it is ok to use Rotella Dino oil)

I got invited by several HD riders at work. After reading about how big the arena is and how many bikes are expected to be there (at least 1200 + bikes), I think I may just head south and take my son for a nice ride to visit relatives. On a good note, I did sign the petition form. From what I heard about the York, Pa. plant, it is inevitable at this time and the plant will eventually close temporarily w/ the option to re-open provided if sales increase in the future. Ride safe everyone.

Congrats on the job well done, frankc. I also bought my Carbtune, 1 month after owning my Venture. Ride safe.

I agree 100%. I'm the same way with my cars and more picky with my Venture when it comes to dealer work. I know a dealership 50 miles west of me and they sometimes let me in their shop when my Vulcan went in for some scheduled pre-paid maintenance. Perhaps I'll have to talk to the shop manager first and find out exactly how they are going to do the work...down the road. Right now my bike runs excellent and with lots of power whenever I need it. After another 1000 miles, I am going to replace my plugs and take a close look at them and determine whether a float adjustment is justified or not (I am sure the dealer will be asking questions as well). As far as Spark Plugs are concerned, I picked up 4 NGK plugs (DPR8EA-9) from Advance Auto for $1.99 each. I thought I was going to pay premium price for Venture plugs....

V7Goose, I somewhat understand now, how significant a properly adjusted float is to our bikes. This really calls for some concern for the 2nd generation Ventures. What if I call a Yamaha dealer and tell them that my float may be out of spec? Will they say bring it in and we'll charge you for the work or should this be covered under warranty? When I just got my bike, it smelled gas for the first 2000 miles while parked inside the garage. Now I'm at 7000+ miles and I no longer smell gas or perhaps I just don't notice it that much. My mpg averages about 40 mpg. Thanks for your response.

I know Ponch has offered me his Shim Kit once I am ready to use it. I will keep you in mind. Thanks again Ponch. Just out of curiosity, I inquired on the Price of the Shim Kit from Preferred Powersports. The item # of the Shim Kit is KL13-7005 and with a 10% discount for a total price of $106.15. (It was a little hard for me to believe V7Goose's initial post on the price of a kit) I just had a feeling it was a typo error on their website...As for the Shim Bucket tool, it is item # P517 for a price of $11.95 each. Kit comes with 2 each of the ff sizes: 2.30, 2.40, 2.50, 2.55, 2.60, 2.70, 2.80, 2.90, 3.00, 3.10 Happy Shopping.

I may need an 'Idiot's Guide Book on Float Adjustment'. Not sure how one can tell that your bike needs the float adjusted or not. Is there any decrease in performance?

I think my rear shock has failed
N3FOL replied to Midrsv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Midrsv, how much weight do you normally put in your bike? How many miles on your bike since your shock decided to go bad? I'm just curious, because I am a tad worried about my own rear shocks. The warranty coverage does give me a little peace of mind. -
Plug and play Amp for Venture
N3FOL replied to Longball75's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It is pricey...for the whole package including 4 speakers for $500.00 - one may want to hear the sound quality before investing on this. However, I am glad that Hi-Fi manufacturers are starting to develop plug-and-play products for our motorcycles. -
I really that a tire plug and a portable pump is a good addition to be permanently placed in the saddle bags especially on long trips. I should purchase a set for my bike in the near future.

Lately, if I want to check my oil level and my son is out playing with his friends (he is usually my assistant), I would just put my bike on my new J&S jack and check the oil level...since the bike is up on the air it is a good opportunity to check underneathe and clean my rear wheel (man it gets dirty down there). Oil check - once per week.

2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
N3FOL replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ponch, I will happily accept that offer. Right now, I don't need to have a valve adjustment soon but I will certainly contact you once I am ready. -
2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
N3FOL replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Adjusting valves on a motorcycle I think is not too difficult, since I have done numerous valve adjustments on a car in my lifetime + lots of help in this forum if you get into a roadblock. I think the key here is to read about it and understand the concept and take your time and have all the parts on hand before starting the project. I also don't think that I can take my bike to a dealership and have them do the adjustment and pay at least $300 + for the work. Acquiring a valve tool is not expensive. What is a waste of money IMO is to buy a complete shim kit and only use certain sizes, if needed. If there is a Venture Rider Shim Kit that can be rented (with a deposit) and if you use certain sizes in that kit and replace them with new ones when finished may be a good approach to this shim kit dilemna. Once the kit has been returned to the rightful caretaker, the deposit can be refunded...the benefit here...members can also throw in their used shims in the kit for other members to use. -
Adventure_1943, are the markers bright enough even during the day? Oh yes, congrats on the nice neat job.

Whoever Gary is, I'm also very glad to hear that he is doing fine. Please get his bike road worthy in no time. Regards and Ride Safe.

2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
N3FOL replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was just hoping that the Shims I already have would be the same exact Shims for a motorcycle. Oh well, I still have 20,000 miles to go before my first valve adjustment. I hope to be ready then and have all the parts needed on hand. I may start a parts list sometime soon. N3FOL -
I don't know for me...I've Synched my Carbs and checked and adjusted idle at least 2X now and my average is still very close to 40 mpg. I ride mostly interstate, so now sure what else I can do to improve and impress myself that my Venture will actually get 45 mpg and up. I am closing in to 8000 miles and am looking forward in replacing my plugs and that may give me a slight improvement on mpg. BOO, 48 to 50 mpg on a Venture is almost hard to believe until I really see my own Venture do just that (wishing).

2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
N3FOL replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This is what my used T-SHO Shim measured on the caliper...see pic. (Slightly bigger than what is stated in this thread). -
Ok, I think this makes sense to me. If it is summer here in North American, it is Winter over there in Australia. Glad to hear you were to at least take a 10 minute ride around the block. Ride safe.
