Yeah. Laugh about the Krytonite now. That's the reason why I'm no longer bullet proof! Darned Jimmy Olsen. Always hiding a piece of that stuff in my lunchbox for giggles. Did I mention that I now have to wear glasses too? And forget about leaping over tall buildings. I do good if I can crawl onto my recliner.

;)I know. I just threw that out there for grins. I'd have to have an electrical system that put out around 1100 amps to run the linear and then there's the antenna selection. Many of them simply will not last due to the loads corroding with moisture as a result of running hot. It would be fun though, being able to electrocute bugs just by keying the mic.

Take it from a truck driver. You dealer smokes crack. Your CB most certainly will not perform as it should nor will it last as long as it should if your SWR's are not properly set. Don't let your dealer do it. Find out who the truckers in your area recommend or learn how to do it yourself. By the way has anyone here had any luck with hooking a 500 watt linear to a CB on a 1st generagtion VR yet?

If you line the inside of your helmet with aluminum foil, the voices can't get through to you.

I do as the city ordinances allow. Not meaning to hijack this fine thread, but when I started playing regularly 20 years ago, I thought I was the only one. Our ranks are growing in Amarillo. We are now a legion (or at least five) of tuba players. The basses will conquer the world! Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated! Mwahahahahaha!

Over half of the world owns a stinkin' Harley. The main reason I bought a Yamaha was so I wouldn't have to buy an inferior product. Oh! By the way. One of my tubas is a Yamaha. http://i29.tinypic.com/o2vzo.jpg

Funky Fuel Gauge?
Schlepporello replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I don't know, I've only been back riding regular for three weeks now and I'm still trying to figure my bike out. And yes, I've heard the same reports as you. My mileage figures are still around 36 MPG. I'm sure my riding habits and techniques are having an adverse effect, I'll figure it out eventually. -
Funky Fuel Gauge?

I concur. I've been going from 146 to 150+ miles before my red light comes on. And 2 bars at 110 miles sounds about like what my bike is doing right now. As in my case, I'm sure that stop and go combined with occaisional frivolity of the throttle is having an adverse effect on my mileage. It would be nice to just get it on the highway for a 100 mile non-stop ride just once to see what the mileage looks like then. -
Funky Fuel Gauge?

Thanks guys! My suspicions were that it was a float and lever type sender, but seeing as to how my motersickle knowledgebase is only 30 years out of date, I wasn't sure that some new fangled sender might have been developed. I know what I'll be working on this weekend. -

I haven't tried pricing one yet, but if I try to get one from our local "dealership" I'll bet it'll be more like $250. That seems to be the majic number for them. This sender wire, is that on the unit inside the tank? -
Funky Fuel Gauge?

I'm thinking that I may have a faulty float or maybe the linkage isn't lined up quite right (the bike has been laid over at least one time by the previous owner). Regardless, I won't be checking it out until the next weekend that I'm low on gas. -
Funky Fuel Gauge?

That's what I'm currently doing. One thing I know for sure, when the red light comes on, I have a little over one gallon left. -
OK, I've only filled the tank on my VR 4 times so far and every time I've done it, I did it the same way I have on every bike I've ever owned. I filled it to the top! Yet when I fire up the bike, the red light goes blinky blinky and the gas pump icon shows up, the gauge registers no gas in the tank. It won't register on the guage until I've driven it enough to bring the gas level down a bit. Then, it seems like it drops like a rock until it's time to get gas again. Once the gas registers zero o the guage and the red light lights up, I hit the gas station and usually end up having only put in 4.1 gallons. Is this normal behavior for the fuel gauge on 1st generation VR's or do I need to service my tank float device somehow?

Well that proves it. Wearing certain shirts can be a road hazard.

Battery Warning Light Help
Schlepporello replied to JayLaveroni's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've put in the PC 680 as well. As far as I'm concerned, there is no other battery to consider. -
In the three weeks I've been riding as a returning rider, I've made one curve where I was leaning so far as to feel the toe of my size 14 steel toed boot gently scrape the ground. I said to myself, "Self", says I, "I might possibly be going just a tad too fast. I might ought to back out of it just a hair." This time, I listened to myself and all was well in Wayne's World.

I paid $3000 for my 84 with 70,000 miles on it. And I had to look long and hard to find this one! Everything else I was finding was either a misused Harley or a neglected Gold Wing and everything else I was looking at in this area was well over $3000. Compared with what our market had to offer, I got a deal!

http://i35.tinypic.com/xao07c.jpg Does size really matter? Yes, the mirrors I used are slightly smaller, but so was the price. I'm talking $13 US compared to $250 US for an OEM mirror. Mine'll get the job done and it'll pass the state inspection. One thing I did notice though, they have a habit of vibrating loose. I pulled the mirror and lock nut off the shaft and put a liberal amount of Teflon tape on the threads. The problem went away.

Back in the late 70's (I believe 1977), Texas passed the no helmet law the first time. Six days later, I decided I'd make a little run down to Pier 1 Imports on my Yamaha 175 Enduro. I walked out without a helmet, mom came chasing after me with helmet in hand and informed me I was going no where without a helmet. I put the helmet on and took off. I went around the corner where she couldn't see me, took the helmet off and secured it to my luggage rack and took off again. The last thing I remember was driving down Van Buren Street by the Jr. College. But the accident I had happened on Wolflin Street, which I don't even remember getting on. I woke up in ICU with a fractured skull and road rash on my back. Fast forward to now. Thanks to that pesky Jimmy Olsen who kept sneaking green Krytonite into my lunchbox for laughs, I'm no longer bulletproof. Even though Texas has once again passed the no helmet law, I believe I'll wear one now. But whereas I used to wear a full-face, I now wear a 3/4. I've thought abought a half helmet, but really like the 3/4 better. Especially since I found one that fits good. The missus wears one too when she rides with me.

I've only run two tanks of gas through my 84 VR so far. I'm averaging 36 MPG right now and this is driving to and from work through speed zones ranging from 30 mph to 45 mph. However, there are a couple of secluded stetches of road (nothing but straight road with no turn outs) that I might stand on it just a bit. I'm still trying to figure the bike out and as soon as I do, I'm sure my numbers will rise.

That reminds me of the back bumper my dad had someone build for the back of his '64 Chevy 1/2 ton pick-up. It was made from 1/2" steel plate. One flat piece across the top that was about 6" front to back, same dimensions on the piece going straight down from the back with a triangular shaped piece welded on at each end to brace it. A girl rear ended him at a stop sign. Didn't even scratch the bumper, totaled her car though.

Guys, I really and honestly appreciate all the help and advice this forum has to offer. You guys are the best! And the service manual downloads offered on this board are a lifesaver too! As I had mentioned before, when I hooked the fuel pump up to my trickle charger, it started pumping. It was not pumping prior to my pulling it off. Therefore, I can only conclude that for some reason it had locked up momentarily and my removing it loosened something up. I've reinstalled the fuel pump and hooked everything back up. It fired up and ran on the first push of the button. I'm fixing to run it down to the gas station to top off the tank. I'm also adding the last portion of SeaFoam and I'm gonna put in a little Heet too whilst I'm at it. From here on out, the petcock stays on reserve (so I don't have this part of the problem happen again) and I'll be more mindful of keeping the tank full. I'll also be looking for a replacement fuel pump too in case this one is actually trying to join the deceased on a more permanent basis. By the way, will an aftermarket fuel pump be advisable for this bike?

If the little red light is going off, it's been my experience so far that there is a corresponding image in your dash that appears to indicate where the problem is. This is true for the battery, side stand and fuel level. Look and see if you have an image appearing with the light. If it's the battery image, then chances are you're not using an original type battery as there is a sensor that is supposed to be attached to the battery. If this is the case, there is a post here at http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=489 that explains how to bypass it.
