That's comforting to know. Three weeks after I got my '84, I was getting on the throttle quite healthily when it jumped out of gear in 2nd. I did the eye roll thing too. I'm currently babying it in 2nd now and only hitting it heavy in 1st and 3rd. Even with this type of operating, the bike still has all the speed and power I'll ever need. As for repairs, I thought I might be able to tackle it, until I read the repair posts. I might be good with a wrench, but I don't think I'm that good. And there's not enough room in my garage to tackle a job like this either.

Pipeband on stage with Rod Stewart!!

You could always host them for free on http://www.acidplanet.com/ and then post the links to the song files here. -
I'd forgotten about that. I used them on the big truck and never had to mess with them unless I broke one on a tree limb. Yep, they will splinter after a while.

Has anyone ever tried Francis antennas on their bikes for their CB's? I used the 4' fiberglass jobs on the 18 wheeler with great success.

That's what I thought. I knew that by design the ball had to rotate within the hitch to a point. If it didn't, the hitch would pop loose every time you hit a dip. Not only does the hitch have to allow for rotation front and back, but on a bike would have to allow from side to side as well.

Y'all are a bad influence on me. I see how it could be done. Get a VW trike and maybe stretch it just a bit, put the camper shell on it, rig it with lights and mirrors and everything to make it street legal ad you've got a mini-Winnie.

Like WAY COOL man! I love pipes! I'd love to learn to play 'em if I wasn't so durned busy playin' my tuba. -
Maybe I'm wrong, having never pulled a trailer with a bike before, but I fail to see the neccessity of having a ball pivot in this fashion to begin with. I've pulled trailers of various shapes and sizes professionally for the last 20 years. It has been my experience that the ball already pivots to a certain degree within the hitch, that's why it's round. Surely with a standard rigid ball setup there is enough "play" for a rider to still be able to lean into turns half way comfortably. Am I wrong on this?

Fuel valve no reserve

I had the same thing happen on my 84 VR. Unfortunately for me, I was too far from the house to push the bike back home. Fortunately, I had friends who came running with a trailer when I called them. I too was trying to check my range on the main. I switched to reserve and went another half block before it died again. My suspicion is that I may actually have had more gas in the tank at that time, but given the age of the bike, the lower inlet for the reserve could have been partially blocked blocked with gunk. I'm leaving it on reserve for now and will pull the petcock this winter and check it out. -

Don't say that too loud. The brain police will hear you and before you know it you'll have a "Class A" CDL and be forced to drive for a lesser trucking firm like JB Hunt. -
I've done exactly that with my 84 VR. The battery works like a champ and the red light stays off.

For the benefit of those of us who are new to the board, do you have any pics of the brackets themselves and of them mounted on the bike? Thanks! -
Give Webshots a try. I've got a ton of vacation pics hosted there for free.

I knew a pressman that worked at a local print shop. He was what I would call a "Biker Dude". He constantly wore the Harley stuff and rode a nice Electroglide to work daily. I took a special twisted pleasure in walking in to make a delivery and commenting mischievously to Emmet that he had a really nice looking Gold Wing.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you folks, but the missus and me ain't the thinnest people around or equally proportioned for that matter. I stand 6'-7.5" tall and the missus is 5'2" tall. I had to pull my back rest off so my wife wouldn't have it diggin' into her middle and it hindered her getting on the bike with her short laigs anyway. It's off and we're snug as a bug now.

And what color would you prefer that vest in, sir? Black or black?

I have a cousin who claims that the way to go is with mounting tiny brass bells on your ride. I think she's been smoking crack in the sun again. I've never heard of any effective device that would keep deer from crossing in front of you short of a loaded rifle and a valid hunting license.

Oh man! I was trying to find a 450 before I finally found my VR! Kinda glad I didn't now.

Thanks! I was curious. A friend of mine just bought hisself a new GW and in the two months he's had it has already made three trips from here (Amarillo, TX) to Creede, Colorado and back. I believe he had his wife on the bike as well. I know he hasn't had a bike since he was in college.

Here here! I've never had the hankerin' for an HD and hopefully never will. They're built too heavy and in my opinion still too outdated. And for the price of a single Harley, I can keep myself riding a decent rice burner for a loooooooooooong time. And who really wants to wear black all the time and be forced to keep that mean look on their face? You're supposed to enjoy driving.
-
How was the ride on your butt though? Did it just about whip you or were you able to push on like you normally would in a car? The reason I ask is that the longest non-stop trip I have ever made has been a 45 mile one-way trip to Fritch, Texas. That was back in my teens and I thought at that time that I would surely die.

Well, I thought about it for a week, then went to Harbor Freight and bought me one of those "Bad Boy" air horns. I knew I'd need to make a new bracket to mount the horns with, so when I was making a delivery to a local truck trailer manufacturer here I asked if they just happened to have a small piece of scrap aluminum diamond plate that I could talk them out of. All they said they had was a piece of stuff that was 3/8" thick. I said that would be perfect, and it was! They gave me an 8" square piece of the stuff. So with scrap and horns in hand, I set myself to work today. I cut a new mounting bar similar to the one for the stock left horn with the exception of being 6" long. I pulled the stock horn and mounting bar from that location and mounted the new bar and horn in that location. I then pulled the panel for the cassette deck. I routed all of my wiring up through a gap on the inside and hooked up my relay there as well as securing the relay to the front part of that compartment. I still had plenty of room to reinstall the cassette deck. I had wired the horns up exactly as the instructions directed me to. Got everything hooked up, tucked everything away, turned the key and hit the horn button. To my exuberant glee the horns blew triumphantly. I've got horns! Next I plan on fabricating a new mounting bar for the right side horn, I'm gonna put a matching unit over on the right side. I also plan on adding an upward extension of the bar directly over the horn to facilitate mounting an additional headlight just above the horn. That is, unless I find a better place to mount additional headlights.
