  1. Ouch! True in most cases.. but I was surprised at some of them.. the lads in State College PA did me a fantastic job when my fuel pump was dead.. the mech accidentally broke something on the radio and prolly could have gotten away with it somehow but he was man-up about it and the shop replaced it by robbing the part from a show floor bike. now THAT was service!! Because all of this was warranty work, it didn't cost me a thing but I made sure the standup mech got a little something extra.. he declined.. so I asked his boss to take him out to lunch or something. And I had that warm fuzzy feeling the boss guy would carry it out as requested.. Man, you gotta love PA people like that.. Before I left HFX to go to PA, that same fuel pump was switching off at random moments with no explanation etc.. When I took it to the one shop they told me "we can look at it in about 10 days from now.." All I needed was a 'what do you think it might be' so that I may decide to go on this trip to PA or not.. Dang.. I took it to another shop closer to home and the guy apologized he couldn't get it in before I left as they were so booked up.. but offered some things to look at, some of the same things mentioned here when I eventually did break down in PA a week later.. When I got back I went back to the first place and told them about what happened and that we figured out what the prob was.. "Oh great, let me know so I can log it for troubleshooting" is what he said before I walked out the door without saying anything to him.. However at the 2nd place, I explained to the manager what had happened, indications, tell tale signs etc etc.. At least HE made an attempt to help me at the time.. I dunno.. if you can't help me, say so, don't just do the "Where else would you go even if I treat you like dog poo?" attitude thing.. Moving right along..
  2. no worries M8.. A few years back I had my brakes serviced and as I pulled out of the dealership, I tested the brakes before going into traffic and they worked great (new pads and all ya know?) but when I leave the parking lot and try to stop before engaging traffic, I have NO brakes what so ever.. WTF! it's a sick feeling when no front or rear brake.. how can BOTH go out at the same time.. We make decisions every day and luckily for me I survived this one.. too close to the street to dump the bike or swerve into a wall (better to hit wall at 20 mph than get hit by a car at 50 mph).. I dropped the hammer hard and made it across 2 lanes of traffic by a narrow margin and crashed the bike in the field across the parking lot.. As I marched my way across the street (traffic had halted after that stunt) I could see someone running out the back of the shop and high tailing it over the fence.. that was odd in itself but what it turned out to be is that this was the mechanic who pooched my brakes.. I had enough brakes for the one pump and that was it. After that both brakes bled out and there was nothing left. the dumb nuts forgot to finish off the job. It wasn't just a oops mistake, it was gross negligence.. Apparently he had some issues he was working out but they still let him continue work on bikes.. how difficult could it be eh? Needless to say the bike got repaired, the mech lost his license and karma caught up with him late one evening a few weeks later. I banged up my shoulder a bit which healed Ok but the bike was like new after they fixed it properly, 2 yrs of free maintenance and new riding gear.. Our past shapes our present and future.. anytime I get a bike (or car) out of the shop, I go over it with a fine tooth comb and question the mech as to what he had done.. it happens once in a while the mech will remember .. oh yeah, let me double check this or that and it's all good.. Some take it personal that I don't trust their workmanship, some appreciate my concern for MY safety.. Anyway.. the frost is off the ground now, time to go biking =)
  3. Phew! Thanks M8.. good thing I couldn't order the AM/FM radio after all.. it was only $14 or so.. I'll give you a shout when I get it all done. Prior to that buddies and I are going to do range testing on the Fm and CB radio.. they're interested in doing this mod also but because of a HD buddy who had a dismal experience with his mod, they are leery of trying it. Cheers
  4. 404's were the most useless tire I ever had on my bikes in the rain.. the E3's worked very well in the rain.. I'm on my second set of E3 tires, the rear tire lasting 21,000 miles before replacing it.. I also replaced the front tire as it scalloped due to a loose neck bearing..
  5. Nice mod.. it's not a matter of the seat not really needing to be bolted down because of rider weight holding it down, it's more of a matter of shoddy workmanship and lack of professionalism at the dealership when they do work on the bike.. Ok, seat attachment hardware missing but not hooking everything up that they took apart? ouch. I had something like that happen to me on a different bike, I wasn't as forgiving as you were when I went back to deal with the dumb ass mechanic who almost got me killed.. by the time I was done, he'd had lost his license and was fired.. Call me silly but I take my safety quite seriously.. Seat mods huh? I'd check see what mods they might have done to your brakes as well.. Cheers M8
  6. I had placed my order last evening from a WalCott and appears I might have goofed on the antennas.. I had ordered two FL3B firefly.. I attempted to purchase the AMFM3-B AM/FM Antenna from WestCoast but they don't seem to be set up for Canadian purchases online.. so an email is sent off requesting assistance.. Can you please confirm that I would need to order the AMFM3 antenna as well.. one of your earlier messages indicated two of the FL3 antennas and then later a message shows the AMFM3-B AM/FM Antenna.. in my confusion I ordered two of the FL3 with tuneable tips.. It's not worry, the price is good enough on the AMFM3 antenna... and I can offload the surplus antenna easily.. But if the same FL3 antenna can be used for the AM/FM then no worries.. but I dunno.. Thanks M8
  7. Funny enough, my ride buddy and I were discussing that today when I mentioned to him of going with the black antennas on my Midnight Venture.. "shame you can't so a dual antenna on these bikes.. " but look.. maybe so! hehe.. Some of the parts on the list in the article don't come up on their website and I don't know enough about coax / cb to know what to look for.. But it turns out I have a buddy who IS into CB in a big way who will be able to do the SWR metering for me when I get my system switched over. Nice! Fun!
  8. What are the exhaust on your starglide? AWESOME looking bike but I'd hate to give up my trunk space.. Hmm maybe.. argh.. decisions!! lol.. Good on ya M8..
  9. Thanks M8, I'll have to figure out where I can go to have the SWR thing done.. last time I had anything like that done was waaaaay back in the 80's.. Cheers
  10. Thanks M8.. I was just looking at their site and wasn't too sure what all was needed.. I think that my main purpose of wanting to go ahead and changing them is to go for the all black in colour more than anything else, really. So it's the same antenna for both CB and AM/FM radio.. I didn't realize that.. huh tres cool. the antenna you listed is the 3 footer.. Thanks for the heads up..
  11. Following this thread as I'd like to change out my skinny antennas and go for 'black' antennas that hopefully will not only look better (all black bike) but also give better range and reception.. The parts list provided, would all this also apply for the CD and the am/fm antenna setup? I'm all a little new to this but those type of antennas are what I'd like to have on mine and hopefully folded down when need be.. am I on the right track? Cheers
  12. As simple as that?!?! c'mon.. what's the catch? can't be THAT easy.. ?
  13. How easy of a change over is it to do? much fiddling and buckshee or a straight up unscrew and screw on? strangely enough my ZUNE has better reception sitting on the tank than the bike's radio antennas do.. go figure.. Any major differences between a 3 and 4 foot antenna? thanks in advance.. (surprised at the price)
  14. wow.. "Go big or stay home" That's going to be an interesting bike when you're done for sure!!
  15. Mine used to do that as well but no longer.. not sure what fixed it.. (swift kick to the shifter?) but I understand where you're coming from with your concerns as it was a pain in the ass when it was doing it. Making sure there is no weight against the tranny helps.. (trying to change gears while the bike is stopped on an incline for example.. )
  16. Hi Jeff, yes there are like night and day on the bike's handling.. I've installed about 4 sets of the leveling links on other people's bikes and can't honestly recall any 'slop' in the bolt after torquing the nuts. Did you remember to put in the washers? I am not sure if your condition will affect the rideability or safety of the bike.. best wait to hear from the experts on that one..
  17. Is it just a matter of taking the rear trunk and antennas off? You should be careful, people might confuse your bike for a HD.. I debadged my Midnight and I get a lot of "oooh nice Harley"... Ok thanks.. I think..?
  18. I can go 100 miles and show 2 or 3 bars down, and then it plummets to the last 4 bars in the next 40 to 60 miles.. when I'm close to reserve levels, the F comes up, then the light and soon there after, I have to be on reserve .. all within minutes..
  19. So strange how that works sometimes.. Doing the mountains in NH got me good mileage as well.. but generally speaking, anytime I get headwinds, I know I will get shyte mileage..
  20. The float is stuck to the top of the tank, hard to reach and test.. however, do the test i did, fill the tank up and ride till it dies, (bring a jerry can with you) and fill up your tank again.. the bike should start.. you MAY have to put it on reserve to get it to start.. Are you the only owner of the bike, if so, when's the last time you changed the fuel filter? If you can't remember the last time you did it, then it might be a good time to do it 'anyway' regardless of the probably cause of your bike's ailment. Keep us posted.. i went through 3 separate shut down issues this summer alone and all of them puzzlers.. but the fixes were simple to fix but hard to find..
  21. My 2006 Midnight Venture just turned over 50,000 miles on this recent road trip and I experienced the BEST gas mileage ever on a tank of gas!! wow.. I road for close to 150 miles before pulling over for fuel at a regular fuel stop and pumped in 12 litres of fuel.. 56.8 MPG Imperial and 47.3 MPG US 70 mph in 5th with all tail winds made a huge diff.. Big beautiful day, 5 hours of traveling to do and I just decided to roll softly.. and was surprised at the mileage.. albeit boring After that fuel stop I slammed it in 4th and rolled with the fast traffic to get home the rest of way hehe.. amazing.. the fuel mileage was significantly worse on the last leg
  22. Dood, it sounds very much like what had happened to me earlier this year and the fix is replacing your fuel filter (if your problem is same as mine).. What happens is that the fuel filter gets clogged up but still able to allow the fuel pump to suck fuel through if the fuel tank is full because the the weight of the fuel in the tank helps to push some fuel through.. but when you get down to a certain level, there is no longer enough 'head pressure pushing down on the fuel to assist the pump, thus causing a fuel starvation problem that looks and feels like you ran out of gas.. By going to 'reserve', and the bike starts, that's because you've added more head pressure as the reserve stem is lower than the normal stem on the petcock.. Changing the fuel filter, as annoying a job as it is, will resolve your issue, IF its the same case as what happened to mine.. from what you describe, it sure sounds like it.. Fuel filters should be changed often but we often neglect to do so on these bikes because it's a pain in the ass.. Mine was SO clogged, it contributed to the fuel pump dying later on this summer while away on a road trip.. best of luck, let us know how it turns out. Cheers
  23. Thanks guys, I'll tackle it soon and see what happens.. Cheers!
  24. Ok, just exactly HOW do you adjust these passing lamps for the UP and DOWN?? I can't see it.. Anyone able to shed some light on this.. ? Thanks in advance.
  25. Do you find they stand out enough to make it worth while? I'd seen them on other bikes and barely noticed the lights.. I'm all for additional lighting, don't get me wrong, but are these good and bright?
