vibration at 70mph
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
double check see if you're not riding a Harley by mistake.. Vibrations are felt where, in the feet, hands or butt? Is it a high or low frequency? Have you had any maintenance or make any changes to your bike recently? Have you gone over your bike to check for loose bolts, screws or panels? (recheck your side bags for tightness, highways light mounts if you have them etc etc.) 2,001 things can cause any vibes but it's hard to tell if it's ok or baaaaad.. -
Do you have the Yamaha Trunk Bag?
Seaking replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The rain covers look like a tightly woven nylon fabric, usually elastic banded to fit around the bag.. you would USUALLY find it stuffed in a panel inside of the pockets of the bag.. I found one of those bags online but the company doesn't ship to Canada.. must be another one of those silly homeland security rules. scary canucks to the north.. oooooh... Do you find the bag will be practical? I usually strap a medium sized red waterproof duffle bag type thing on there.. -
Synthetic will permit you to go longer between oil changes.. it tends to often quiet down the bike's engine.. gives you feeling that the engine can take the abuse you know it really can anyway, but with synthetic you actually feel it can? lol I dunno. If you go synthetic, you'll find your oil changes more expensive, but in a year you'll be doing fewer thus in most cases, the cost is offset by the frequency. Amsoil, which I have in my bike now, is $19 a bottle, Mobile VTwin is $15 while Kawasaki full synthetic is $11 a bottle.. Which is better? Honestly couldn't tell you but I have Amsoil in mine.. I got it for a good price.. but I don't think I'd put it in at full retail price.. ouch.. And make sure you use a top notch filter! The one advantage I find with synthetic is that it doesn't break down as quickly as regular oil.. I now often find myself riding at the top or middle of the power band instead of the lower end of it.. it smoothed out the bike.. I was a little surprised to discover I had been going 75 mph in 3rd the other day down the highway.. it felt nice. 4th or 5th would have given me better fuel economy mind you.. but man, the throttle is super responsive in 3rd at those speeds.. wowsers.

Never said it turns it to 'mush', but what I read was that some are adamant in their belief that the product is excellent, if you're into racing and do regular engine break downs, which gets the parts cleaned up and so on.. apparently mkote 'coats' the metals as it says it does, but over time it can potentially do more harm than good.. I also prefaced it with "it's what I read, what do *I* know?" And since it's not available in my area, it's a moot point for me anyway..

Another Cruise Control Problem
Seaking replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm going out in left with this one, waaaay out in left field but I believe the Ignition Module "mayhaps" have something to do with it? All summer long, my cruise would kick off if I hit a bump or heavy gust of wind, it wouldn't roll on properly but once it got the speed right, it would stay on until the bump or wind.. I have since replaced my ignition module with a Dyna3000 module and now my cruise control is rock solid, 4th and 5th.. the higher the revs the more it is able to maintain its speed. Now whether or not the ignition module actually has anything to do with the cruise, I don't know.. but this is what happened to mine.. Go figure.. -
I was going to ask about the "FRAM" filters.. seen them for the bike but not sure if they would be worth the while.. I have a HiPass filter on with the AMSOIL, highly recommended by several shops here.. (I think that's what it's called..) Still not sure about MOTOKOTE.. don't even know if you can get it around here..

I had pulled them off mid-summer and couldn't believe how clean and bright red they still were so I put them back in.. but now they are nice and dry.. just waiting for the heavy rains to stop so I can charge them outdoors.. and they should be good for another year.. Cheers
-
I know a lot of you run K&N Air filters.. I have to ask, how often are you cleaning these things out, 'recharging' them as it were? I installed mine last summer, 31,000 miles ago to be exact and just now recharging them (they are soaking with the cleaner right now).. and they are just like brand new except for the spot right in front of where the air comes into the box.. a 2 inch diameter grey spot.. the rest of it is nice and red.. wow.. are you kidding me?? I have K&N's on my VSTAR, mind you they sit out in the open so they require more frequent cleaning but is this right, only once a year? And I've been up and down a lot of dirt roads, rain, dust fog and birds.. I'm impressed!! Or should I be doing them more often on spec anyway? I just did the hot hot water from inside-out rinsing and there was a lot of fresh RED oil floating around the tub.. almost as if these were brand new.. wow.

Steering Head Bearings
Seaking replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hand greasing bearings are easy to do, done them as an aircraft mech.. however, the aspect of the job I was unready for is the dismantling of the front end to get to the bearings.. I'd rather have someone who's done it before help me doing it to make it easier and safer -
Steering Head Bearings
Seaking replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Now THERE is a thought.. I've had mine 'tightened' as an interim fix until I can get in there to do the neck up properly, the 06 Midnight has over 50,000 miles on it. Not a job I'd do on my own unfortunately.. The shop who tightened it reported that there were NO flat surfaces on the bearings or race so i should be OK just to get them properly greases up at some point. Would MOLY60 be used in there as well? Grease fittings eh? -
Gerbings Heated Gear and my 09 RSV
Seaking replied to csogbk's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Can you give a little 'learnin' as to what this 'carb heaters' thing is all about, why it's there, what it really does, if it's safe to run without it, pros cons stuff to be aware of if running with out it.. Ideally, running with electrical clothing gear on cold weather trips, you would get the speed up, turn the gear on to get the heat on and then turn it off.. on and off periodically enough to keep the chill off and yet not load down the charging system.. -
Everytime I went down to the USA on a road trip I picked up a tube or two of Honda60 and will soon be putting some on the rear of the bike.. What syn oil do you have in the final drive?

BING!! Email sent lol I'm surprised I had missed that thread. Good on ya!
-
gees, that's a lot of riding for someone working full time lol.. I'm fully retired from the Mob and spend too much time on the bike as it is.. most of my mileage is within NS and NB and New England lol. Good on ya!! Thanks for the info!

ouch, $230 a pop to perhaps find out it doesn't change a thing on my bike.. expensive yoikes.. Thanks for the info lads..

I'd have to go redo a whole google thing on it.. I had heard about motorkote and did some searching on it, not just about the good stuff about it, but also any negatives.. You know how everything is all about hype this and hype that, just cause one person says it's super super great doesn't mean it really is.. remember the 87 vs 93 octane gas to mileage arguments? Anyway.. I did come across other consumer reports / reviews that mentioned the bad about motorkote.. How reliable are those reports, No idea.. how reliable are the positive reviews, again no idea.. Just cause the people who make it say it's awesome, doesn't really mean it is.. Do a google on motorkote, you'll find some cautionary tales about it.. the good and the bad reviews.. Just like you would find some on any product.. Like I said, what do *I* know. I just reported to what I remember reading late one insomninatic night

That's what I had though might have started to cause my slippage.. it was very bad.. couldn't drop the hammer without the revs screaming and no acceleration. I still have the OLD friction discs and will be looking at them closer this winter after my new shop is built.. better lighting..

How MUCH was the basket.. why do they refer to it as an "I" basket? MotorKote, again a lot of mixed reviews.. great on the engines but when you tear down the engines a few later, some claim the damage can be seen.. mostly meant for high performance bikes that get engine tear downs on a regular basis.. But what do I know.. The info out there is so convoluted.. I still think an oil or product should be able to stand on it's own without 'super additives' .. I say this as I pour some SeaFoam in my gas tank of course..

Many thanks for the info, I'll be giving them a read today.. I've put over 28,000 MILES on the bike this summer alone and I go through a lot of oil changes.. costs a lot if I stick with amsoil.. wow.. I was surprised how much it cost but wanted to try it.. I can tell when I need an oil change just by how the bike shifts.. and its usually close to the 5,000 mile mark.. even if I get 8,000 miles out of the amsoil, it's still too expensive. Crappy Tire has the Mobile1 VTwin syn oil.. but I haven't notice the Shell Rotella.. I shall keep an eye out for it.. If going synthetic, what's a good grade? 10W40 or 5W20.. 5 W40 I don't think I'd seen before.. All the same, I have the loud loud Larosa pipes on right now and because I can't hear the engine so well, I'm actually running the bike in the high revs a lot, it quells the pipes a bit at that high revs.. but I can feel the diff the syn oil makes on the vibes.. ; 0 Cruise for Kids in Halifax tomorrow.. gotta go out raise money and make some noise.. =)
-
I just discovered my local car shop actually carries Mobile1 VTwin synthetic oil, at $15 a litre compared to the $19 a litre I paid for the AMSOIL.. compared to the $10 a bottle for the Kawasaki synthetic oil.. I think I know where I'm aiming for next time. The local dealer stated that RP oil is an AWESOME synthetic oil but unfortunately they had several clutch slippage issues on bikes that had RP in them.. he says he may be wrong but he feels the RP had something to do with it because once they changed the oil out, they didn't have the problem soon afterwards.. Go figure..

lol you know, its hard for us northern types to envision anyone in TX or CA to need any amount of heating 'anything' at any time of year.. sigh.. I'll have a closer look at their stuff though.. seems reasonable.. I bought a new Fox Creek leather jacket that really keeps me warm compared to what I had before.. a nice fleece jacket under that and I'm toasty.. but it's not 'cold cold' yet!!
-
I also felt a little 'grit' from the friction plates as well.. not much but enough to cause concern.. i did an oil change after installing the new friction plates I had ordered, just for the peace of mind..
