hey that's cool.. thanks. The last heated vest I had actually plugged into the Battery Minder plug, it had the same two prong connection, not like this one which looks like a bayonet type? Do you also have their type of vest or jacket?

Ok.. I've finally went the synthetic way on this last oil change.. AMSOIL 10W40 Synthetic.. no additives etc.. Not many choices around here as to what to use, Yamaha dealership recommended Kawasaki Synthetic Oil.. meh.. AMSOIL was cheaper, I had used it before in my VStar with good results.. Has anyone ever used Royal Purple Synthetic Oil? It's hard to get around here but I may be able to get a decent deal on a couple of cases, but not sure if it's suitable for the RSV as it's mostly for high performance engines.. It would end up being cheaper than anything else I can get around here.. Anyone have good or bad to say about Royal Purple?? Thanks in Advance.

What is the cost of this silly basket anyway?? If you've done a clutch upgrade yourself, I can't see doing the basket being that much more difficult and certainly not 3 hours for an experienced mech.. might take you and ME 3 hours cause we're morons who don't know nuttin about bikes ourselves ya know? I've heard some people say a basket change may well quell some of the WHINE down.. if it isn't too expensive I may opt doing it myself..

You're assuming I have 'room' in my jacket for so many more layers huh? Where would one get such an adjustable controller? I'm thinking now that just blipping the heat on for a few mins to cut the chill off would do wonders on longer cold weather rides, instead of leaving it on all the time.. Cheers

I sold my heated vest as it was painfully too hot.. wow.. them things make ya sweat!! I have good gloves but a deflector helps to make them warmer, ya know?

Do you turn the fuel off...
Seaking replied to yamadawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just an "aside" here.. every time I hear the word "petcock" it makes me chuckle, but not quite for the reason you may be thinking of.. I teach motorcycle safety here and one of the instructors, being french, speaks fluent english but with a thick accent.. I'm french as well but barely any accent on me.. eh? Anyway, while showing new students the various components of a motorcycle, he refereed to the fuel shut off valve as the Pet Cock.. (not petcock).. "Me I show you now where my pet cock sits on the motorcycle.." Needless to say, it was quite innocent but when you get a bunch of adults eager to learn about biking, the mind doesn't require much to get it giggling.. We had to explain to him that the word isn't two words but a single word.. petcock.. not pet cock.. Hence why today we refer to it as the Fuel Shut Off Valve.. and not his Pet Cock.. -
CB & radio Antenna
Seaking replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just received my order in from Walcott to change out both the CB and AM/FM antenna and to my dismay I realized someone forgot to order 2 heavy duty mounts.. ergh!!! I'll have to play an order for another one and wait till THAT comes in before doing the change over, lest the whole looks 'odd'.. grr.. another week or so of waiting.. -
Do you turn the fuel off...
Seaking replied to yamadawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
cough cough.. and there I was earlier stating that I never turn mine off OR ride with it in the RES position etc.. EGADS!! I just installed my Larosa downturns (loud) and looked up.. OMG, how long have I been riding on RES?!?! egads!! lol.. I hate when that happens.. -
Is fuel pump really needed?
Seaking replied to spingley's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You bet the don't.. luckily for me, the dealer in State College PA without hesitation took the pump off the show floor '09 and installed it in my bike.. gotta like that!! awesome people. Next time in PA I shall make a purpose visit there to thank them again.. nice!! -
My 06 with 48,000 miles on it started to slip and it went from bad to worse in a very short time. I got the same clutch upgrade as being discussed, the directions were clear (though I was cloud headed as to what I was reading.. oops) but it all went on as smooth as silk and man, this clutch grabs nicely! Yes, a little stronger on the hand but you get used to it quick enough, depending on the riding you do.. I found the best way to find a slipping clutch is to be in 5th, around 70 mph and engage an incline.. and then drop the hammer.. if you hear the RPMs climb rather quickly without any acceleration, it's an indication of a slipping clutch.. In my case I went to pass a car on a flat surface and my RPMs screeched up but I didn't really advance at all until it caught a few secs later..

is it just me or is your garage floor 'carpeted' ?? I use a Canadian Tire lift.. it's like any other lift but 'scary' at times.. the lowering valve can get fast if you're not careful.. I'll have to look into the Harbour Freight lift..

Do you turn the fuel off...
Seaking replied to yamadawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If *I* were to do that I'd end up out of fuel on the side of the road lol.. I like knowing I have that little safety margin left.. -

wow, impressive.. was it hard to do? I just had mine replaced under warranty in the USA, should it fail again, this might be the route to take.. -

As I mentioned I'm no expert but this is how it was explained to me when my fuel pump died on a road trip in PA and the mech explained it to me. No fuel to the front until a new fuel pump was installed.. That's all I know.. -

Seaking replied to yamadawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I always leave mine ON, I don't see the harm or benefit or difference of having it in the OFF position if you park it for an extended period of time.. I ride so often and go to RES often enough to keep it 'lubed' lol.. -

There are others with more expert knowledge of the bike than I, however, this is what I remember being told to me when my fuel pump died and the bike wouldn't run.. You need a fuel pump for the RSV.. The rear cylinders are gravity fed whilst the front two are pump fed. If you have NO pump, you can't get fuel to the front cylinders and they will not fire. This was the fault with my bike this summer.. (one of the faults).. -
17th confirmed bird strike of the year

This is this wildest 'hit' story I heard from a friend.. He relates the story as heading across the Renous Highway in New Brunswick which intersects the province in the middle of the wilderness.. he was crossing it late late in the night and boom.. he woke up on his back on the highway with people hovering over him getting sick to their stomachs and yelling at him to stay still until an ambulance arrives.. "don't move, your guts are hanging out" Needless to say this scared him a lot as he could taste blood in his mouth and everything he touched was nothing but gore and blood.. He even got up to his feet, guts spilling off of him and he remembers watching a lady pass out on the highway as he pulled a chunk of meat off his chest.. When the ambulance arrived, the EMTs were in shock and almost unable to assist him because of all the blood and gore on him.. What happened is that while traveling at a good clip of speed in the middle of nowhere, he didn't see the moose in the middle of the road and nailed it mid-rift, ripping out the guts of the animal as the bike rolled under the moose, his windjammer effectively eviscerating the animal as it stood.. While my buddy crashed, coming off the bike unconscious before he even hit the road.. The moose must have jumped or run off into the wooded ditch in fright and died 25 metres into the woods.. When people arrived on the scene after the accident, all they say was a wrecked bike, a biker down and so much blood and gore all over the place, they thought it was his.. the moose was no where to be seen.. the EMTs saw the same thing and they thought buddy was delirious with pain because he wouldn't lay down on the gurney.. and he was panicking because he couldn't feel any wounds or injuries in spite of the amount of blood and gore around him.. Once people calmed down, someone figured out that a moose was hit (chunk of hide on the road apparently).. and that was it.. Bumps and bruises is all he suffered.. darn lucky and one hell of a story.. -

10) Fairing whiskers make the birds think you are a cat Removed eyebrowse / whiskers last year.. 9) Changed out the rear end and installed a 'worm' drive Plausible.. though I doubt it.. 8) Your head and helmet are small enough to look like a beetle insulting beggar ya!! 7) Your jacket is the color of a mating male bird All black.. only hit three crows.. 6) You installed a back nest instead of a back rest Nah, I double checked.. 5) Your left hand looks like it is hold a 'clutch' of eggs now you're reaching lol 4) Your combover is flapping in the breeze and looks like a nightcrawler helmet covers the combover.. I mean the full head of hair.. can't be that.. 3) Your clutch housing chirp mimics a bird call No chirping on this bike! It 'meows' though.. 2) The birds think it is silly you have a cassette deck No tape deck, previous owner removed it to install a radar detector.. (since tossed out as it's illegal around here) And the number 1 reason you hit so many birds - 1) A Gen2 is a 'chick' magnet Ok, I'll buy that one.. One of them chicks will give me a peck on the cheek some day soon.. hahaha -
17th confirmed bird strike of the year

Imagine my disappointment when I discovered I wasn't as studdly as I had imagined myself.. Nice pecker.. yeah right.. thanks.. next thing you know they'd say Nice Dick.. but my name isn't Richard.. -
Anyone seen hand guards for the RSV 2nd Gen other than Hippo or National Cycle? I can't even imagine riding with Hippo for a safety factor to start with.. National Cycle don't seem to have a RSV option.. however I'd seen a 2nd Gen with guard but couldn't find the owner to ask where he got them.. they weren't curved like the NC but angular.. Looking for something to keep the hands a tad warmer..

17th confirmed bird strike of the year
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was coming back from a nice trip along the shore line and I spotted a rather sizable bird sitting on the yellow line.. the road ahead curve sharply to the right with a guard rail in front of you and the ocean on the other side.. no probs.. As I approached the bird, it wasn't moving so I eased over to the right to avoid hitting it.. but at the last moment it flew up, nailed me in the knee cap (ouch!!) and bounced up into my face fluttering of wings as the bird was caught under my helmet's visor.. I couldn't see where I was going and all I could remember of the road was that sharp turn, guardrail and ocean.. braking as hard as I could on the less that nice road, I skidded and swerved, cursed and flailed to get that bird off my face and then all of a sudden it was gone and the guard rail was fast approaching but I managed to make a decent scrapping turn and survived the turn.. thank god no cars were coming.. I kept on rolling, catching my breath and wondering what the heck had happened.. wow.. scared the begeesus out of me.. wow.. My kneecap hurt like heck and I had one hell of an adrenalin rush, I can assure you.. So back to the city I go, a nice 30 minute ride back on the highway. When I get to the city outskirts, I pulled up beside a convertible with two gorgeous babes it.. they gave me a glance and then started to laugh loudly pointing at me.. Aww man, I must a lot of bird guts and feathers all over me.. But as the light changed and the car pulled away, one of the girls called out "Nice Pecker, dood!".. Well thank you.. I didnt know you cared.. ?! What the heck? 1o minutes later I pull into my fave coffee shop where my friends were hanging out and as I rolled in I was getting that strange look again.. Ok.. WHAT!!?? One of the girls called out.. "Taking your bird for a ride or what?!" OMG did I forget to zip up at the last pee stop?! When I looked down, there was this rather large red headed bird sitting between my legs on the tank, looking around as if to say "Are we there yet"??? One of the coffee shop ladies is a bird lover and said it was a red crested wood pecker, on the list of endangered birds or something and she called the SPCA to come fetch the bird as it was still alive.. not sure exactly the species but they made a bit of a deal about it.. so rare I guess.. No wonder my kneecap was so bruised after that collision with a wood pecker's head! Now I can ONLY imagine what those two girls in the convertible were thinking when I pulled up beside them and they saw my pecker sticking up looking around as I took my bird out for a ride that day.. And from that day on, my life has been miserable with birds.. sigh None of this is made up.. I wish it were cause it's funny otherwise.. for others.. -
LOL.. around here if you DON'T ride in the rain, you won't ride much.. its a way of life.. mind you, you do see less Harleys on the road that way.. I still don't know why HD makes rain gear.. The only negative I can give to the E3s is the hummmmm they make when you ride on the edge at all.. if the bike leans any amount, say in a cross wind or a strong road camber, you can hear the treads hum a bit.. I hardly ever notice now, but when I first encountered it I thought it was my rear diff or shaft but when I leaned the bike one side to the other, ahh that's when I figured it out.. Not loud, not a big deal.. but it's there.. I'm on my 2nd set of E3's in one year, getting 21,000 miles on the last set.. Cheers

17th confirmed bird strike of the year
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
comedians, thanks! lol My buddy didn't believe my record last year but when he started riding with me this year, he was stunned that I was getting hit so often.. even while we're traveling in the USA. The most spectacular this year is when we zoomed under a bridge on the highway and a pigeon swooped down from above and caught me square on the shoulder resulting in the bird exploding in a big poof of feathers.. it darn near took me off the bike, causing the bike to swerve wildly before I could pull over. While I was pulled over pulling guts and feathers off my person, my buddy was off his bike laughing his assets off.. yes, he said he appreciated how close I came to crashing and getting seriously hurt but from his angle, the kamikaze bird strike was cartoonishly funny to see from behind.. apparently the big poof of feathers was immense.. I didn't think it was funny as I had feathers and guts all over me and almost crashed.. But the woodpecker bird strike was the funniest of them all... but that's for later.. -
Ok I'm getting worried now.. No joke, no fabrication here, but this evening I've had my 17th confirmed bird strike while riding my 2006 Midnight Venture this year. By confirmed I mean someone else saw it happen as well.. I've taken crows to the helmet, woodpeckers to the knee cap, various small birds through the front wheel.. pigeons exploding off my shoulder, etc etc.. this evening, a large white bird zoomed out of the woods and nailed my foot in such a manner as to twist my foot off the highway peg.. OUCH!! I had to pull over as my knee was pooched from the twisting.. My ride buddy saw it happen but couldn't ID the type of bird but all he saw was a big poof of feathers from the impact.. I ride my bike a lot, so compared to the average person, I should actually see more hazards than the guy / gal who goes from their home out to the coffee shop and back but this thing about bird strikes has me worried.. with over 30,000 miles since last summer.. My buddy, who's witnessed close to 10 of these bird strikes can't believe it but the blood and guts and bruises are not fantasy.. it hurts! He thinks it might be possible that there is something on the bike causing these birds to have a suicidal tendency.. Is it just me and my bike or is this common to get so many bird strikes on a bike?

After trying a bunch of helmet cams and stuff I've never enjoyed the resulting video too much.. Here are quickly done up videos where I mounted a Panasonic SDR-S150 camera to a Fat Geko Helmet Mount.. The video camera is amazing though the mount leaves the camera levered out a lot thus causing some movement.. a closer to the helmet mount would result much better video I believe.. First video if a run around the block, trying it out.. http://www.myvstar.ca/sdr-s150/ This is one is on our favourite bike route, the Waverley Road.. at the beginning you can the bike whine and then switch to music as I hadn't muffled the mike yet against the wind.. Smaller frame size so the clarity isn't there but on DVD its decent.. =) http://www.myvstar.ca/waverley-sdr/ More later.. Cheers
