Ok, I've changed the oil in the bike (not the filter) as I will be doing this once again next week when I install the new clutch kit coming in.. The book states that without changing the filter, the bike will take 3.5 litres of oil.. 3.7 litres if you change the filter.. (page 7-15 owners manual) And just like the last time, I've drained the oil out, removed the filler plug, bike is upright, hot engine, I even go as far as leaning it side to side to get the last of the old oil out and I just put in 3 litres of oil.. and the level is right at the top of the sight glass.. I actually had to drain a tad out to bring it to within specs.. Seems to me I'm not getting a full draining of the old oil out of the bike.. by half a litre.. might not seem like a lot but it's got me wondering where and why it's not emptying out properly... Or is this more of the norm then? Just curious, bike's been performing superb since the new fuel pump, new coils and new switches in PA the other week Cheers

Fan - 2003 Yamaha Royal Star Venture
Seaking replied to VentureT's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've never seen or heard my fan come on before but recently while synching the carbs up, I thought I had felt a huge exhaust leak from my left front jug.. oh wait, that hot air is from the fan!! Ahhh.. it does work.. An electrician friend of mine said he might be able to hook up a LED light as an indicator when ever the fan came on.. dunno why I'd want that.. ? lol -
Amen! Still happy with mine, even though I ran through a rash of problems, just about all of them resolved now. In the end, everything on the bike is just about swapped out under warranty lol.. Just waiting for the clutch kit and then the rear shock.. Fantastic bike.

Hi Rick, Long time no chat.. I have your seat on my bike which made for some awesome long haul riding the other week, thanks! I believe it was someone else who asked about the double plates.. I just ordered my PWC kit earlier this evening, plates seals and spring plate etc. I wasn't too sure which route to go, but for the amount of slippage I'm feeling I thought it best to go for the PWC.. I've never felt a bike slip as hard as this one is right now.. manageable until I can get the stuff changed over. Thanks for the info M8 SkyDoc showed me a bunch of stuff about the 2nd Gens even though he's got a nicely set up 1st Gen.. he also explained about the VMax rear Considering the style of riding I do, this would be an adequate option for my needs.. I'm going to do an oil change tomorrow to get rid of some of that gunk and do another ones as I'm changing the clutch parts, that should hopefully get some of the gunk out. Now the ONLY thing left for me to ponder is if to go onto AMSOIL 20W50 or not.. JamaLube is getting expensive.. almost the same price as AMSOIL synthetic.. Any comments or recommendation on going synthetic? Amsoil or yamalube, not much choices in town here..

Seaking as in the chopper, I just retired after 30 yrs service Tomorrow, I'll be changing the oil as someone reminded me of the need to clear out the junk from the bad clutch.. ya never know, after I do up my clutch, I'll pop over for a coffee Cheers

I wanted the peace of mind of hopefully never having to worry about the clutch ever again which is another reason I opted for new friction plates on top of the spring.. Just have to cross scratch the steel plates and bob's your uncle.. or aunt depending if he's taken his meds or not..

Going out on a limb with this one but were you trying to jam a 2nd gen kit into a 1st gen bike?
-
how does it look for accommodating ear speakers for a comms system
-
thanks.. I finally got through to them this evening and ordered the full kit.. Compared to what the barnett spring was, I thought it prudent to change it all out.. With the amount of miles I put on this bike.. wow.. I think it will be worth while.. Hopefully it will be here by week's end and I should be able to go road tripping again next week.. =)

Would you have noticed improved fuel mileage due to less slippage?
-
Hey guys, I need to get my clutch redone, sorted out as it's slipping at highway speeds.. not so bad when taking off from a stop but up on the highway, dropping the hammer really screams up the revs and eventually I'll feel some accelleration. Folks have been leading on to the PCW Racing clutch kit, which is not as expensive as thd Barnett clutch kit. Comparing apples to oranges, is one better than the other or are we looking as one being as good as the other, only price being the difference? I couldn't reach the PCW people today.. ergh

Beer30's Stebel Horn Relocation
Seaking replied to BEER30's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Nice idea, Beer30 but around here that horn would have been toasted so many times over.. I've crushed so many troll bells under the bike because of the lumps and humps in most parking lots and side streets around (to slow stoopid people down).. However, it does make it a lot handier to reach.. Mine is under the front fairing, loud enough, protected from rain and the road.. but a pain to reach if you needed to.. I may look at this again come winter project time -
No worries, everything will be on it's own circuit so that if one blows, the other will still work.. I'd have to lose the power source to lose everything

Thanks for the info.. as it turns out I still have the SAME lamps from my VStar which are no longer needed on that bike.. When the time comes, I'll be adding them on.. Thanks for all the help info.

03 Midnight RSV steers hard
Seaking replied to arnesbay's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Silly question, what kind of tires on the bike? As others have suggested, check your pressures.. Mine are 40 psi front and 42 rear. This would be the nice pressure for 2 up or one reasonably sized biker.. (round IS a shape ya know).. Front forks, even pressure makes a diff. If no gauge or pump, you could simply let out all the air (0 PSI) and test it again. I have a 0-60 mini-hand pump that works, but still looking for the same one but in 0-10 psi.. On a stretch, see if the previous owner lowered the bike incorrectly or if the geometry is way off. A lot of people find the 2nd Gen heavy to handle and will try to lower it by various means or install 'leveling links' which do make a grand difference to the handling. just suggestions.. -
Front Wheel Bearings
Seaking replied to SaltyDawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
egads.. check the tire treads for armadillo left overs? Best thing is to put the bike up on the jack and spin the wheel with a cocked ear listening carefully.. at least you'd know what it might not be.. -
Well, I got the problem figured out and know what the problem is.. I went out on a ride today and the lights went out again but it was daylight so no probs. I did a bit of trouble shooting and put in a new fuze, jammed the bars to the right, and then to the left and poof.. AHA!! I saw it right away.. a puff of smoke escape the bike.. Do you remember the laws of physics and electricity? The more smoke you permit to escape from a component, the more expensive or difficult it is to put it back in there to make it work again.. no kidding.. try it at home.. serious. Anyway, joking aside, the problem turned out to be the passing lamp cabling is shorting out the works and causing the fuse to blow, as it should. However, while jamming the bars back and forth, this time when it shorted out the right highway light blew out also.. dead bulb now. So easy enough, turn off the highway light switch and test it over again.. and this time the head light didn't go out.. problem fixed for now.. I remember long time ago people saying never to wire your passing lamps to your head light for obvious reasons.. once again, one of the previous owners did a botch job this one too and now I have something extra to fix this winter.. no probs. Now that I know what and where to go looking, I can also put the lamps on their own circuit with their own fuse.. as they should have been in the first place.. Rode all day without blowing another fuse. Just means I won't have any highway lights until I re-wire this thing. I'm starting to wonder if this fault was affecting anything else on the bike. A while back I asked about what was causing the bike to 'buffet' while in 5th gear doing 70 mph.. not a lugging feeling but the whole bike feels like the wind buffeting it.. I didn't feel any of that today at all.. Could be the heat, the road, the fuel I was using but Hmmm WHO KNOWS. All I know is that I had one hell of a great ride today and plan to go back out for more tonight.. blistering HOT here..

No one has yet confirmed fast flashing lights as a valid error code but as mentioned earlier, a gent experienced the same thing but right now everything checks out good, as mine did.. and now we're waiting for his next failure and indication..
-
I dunno.. anything IS possible at this point.. I'm having my 20x20 (or 24x24 if lucky) garage built this month and this winter will be pulling a lot of panels off the bike and having a good look at the wiring.. I suspect something amiss around the neck area where we found cut and pinched wires last fall.. Could be the area of concern..

Oh gosh not at all slick or slippery at all.. I don't know if you can see it but the road is roughed up for traction and there was no iffy feeling of traction.. Mind you, I have newer E3s on my bike while my buddy has older soon to be changed OEM tires.. He felt the road a little slick but he thinks it was his nerves and adrenalin doing that LOL. I think there is only 1 mile of dirt road and even in the heavy rains that section was decent enough, just recently graded so it wasn't all washboard kinda surface.. Not because it was my second time up, but I honestly felt it was super easy to do.. just take your time, pay attention to what you're doing and it's all good.. you can even steal a glance to the sides once in a while lol

Oh man, no kidding, I'm wondering if this bike is jinxed now.. I was out tooling around the back roads this evening, trying to catch a cool breeze and on the back stretch of a winding road in the middle of no where.. POOF No LIGHTS!! NO Nuttin!! Holy crap batman.. I tossed on the 4 way hazards right away and you'd be surprised how much light they'll toss in pitch dark of night.. Barely enough to get the bike stopped without hitting anything etc.. Dashlight out, headlight out, highway lights out.. Dunno about the rear lights, wasn't too curious at that time as you can well imagine. Signals and 4ways worked ok.. I didn't hit a bump, didn't touch anything and there, right in the middle of a turn, poof. Talk about a heart attack in the making. All it turned out to be was a blown 15A fuse in the left side panel.. It was SO pitch dark I has to use the light of my cell phone to illuminate the work site lol.. literally so dark you couldn't see anything.. Ok, shyte happens once in a while but they all seem to be happening to me all at once.. the bike has over 46,000 miles on it, 2006 Midnight, just had the 4 coils and fuel pump replaced the other week.. How common is this fuze blowing? Is this something that happens on occasion or very rarely does it happen? I swear.. this bike gets more and more interesting every day..

By all means hijack away lol.. The RSV is the first bike I had with hydraulic clutch and it never occurred to me what colour the fluid should be (I didn't actually realize it's brake fluid..) So when I asked if "black" was a good colour, I was soon in the shop getting it flushed.. But though it improved things a lot I think it might have been too little too late and now I'm having what appears to be clutch problems.. slipping a lot now.. I basically can't hammer it down with any confidence and as long as I ride like a little old lady on a sunday ride, I should be OK until I can get the upgrade kit installed. Replace the brake fluid, get it flushed on a regular basis..

Help, broke down 2,000 miles from home
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
haha so you found it.. I leave a CDN coin on foreign soil to mark it as a visited spot.. When I sail overseas, I toss a coin over the side to appease the Sea Gods.. (I'm only a SeaKING after all).. It was great meeting you as well and next time we're down that way we'll have to hook up again.. but leave the HD behind and bring the lovely 1st with you hehe.. -
I don't think it's this one.. I took the bike out again tonight, and pushed the clutch lever forward as I accelerated and still the same thing.. time for clutch upgrades.. Thanks!
