Checking the oil level
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Go figure, she probably doesn't believe you either that you need to balance the bike and hold the handle bars while she's polishing the plexiglass.. Just tell her it is after all for her own safety that you're sitting there balancing the bike and holding the brake.. Some women.. sheesh..! they don't appreciate what we do for them.. -
I thought I'd mention this one to others who might not have thought of this one, but ya know how it's a pain to check your oil level on this bike? You either have to have someone sit the bike for you while YOU get down and check the sight glass or have someone else get down on their hands and knees to check the sight glass for you? Last evening, I was in the parking lot sitting on my bike, and pulled out my telescoping inspection mirror and put it down by the right side pipe.. people come up to see what I was looking for.. I knew some of them to be RSV riders.. It never occurred to them to check their oil levels this way.. from the seat.. My VStar has a mirror contraption bolted down there so that I just look down past my leg and I can see the reflection of my oil level.. but for the RSV you can't do this.. However, an inspection mirror works great! I glued the swivel head in the proper position so that I don't have to fumble with it much and I actually store it in the empty cassette player slot when not in use.. NO excuse for not checking the oil level now..

2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
Seaking replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I called the 2 Yamaha'ish dealerships in town here about doing a valve adjustment on my 06 RSV and they couldn't quote me a price right away as they never done one before.. (too busy selling bikes than doing any maintenance training I'm guessing).. There are a lot of jobs I'm not afraid to do on my bike but digging into the engine's guts is something I'm hesitant about.. There so many tasks I'm reading that you guys dig into it would be great to learn how with a hands on seminar akin to your Maintenance Days.. unfortunately, we're up here in Nova Scotia.. I'm heading out to see someone in Pennsylvania next month about brakes. Perhaps later or next year I can manage a trip down to Texas to see the group and get some 'learnin' under my belt.. I'm currently installing leveling links and synching up carbs for other RSV riders in my area, and showing how to ride the revs up for more fun riding experience.. I'd love to be able to do more but would love the opportunity to learn hands on by some experts.. I know them wrench turners at the dealerships are 'certified' but they worry me when they can't answer a simpler question.. =( One looked at me and asked "how many CC's are Ventures??" let alone remembering it has 4 cylindres when I asked to purchase spark plugs.. Erhm could I have 4 of them please.. it's for a Venture after all.. and all I got back was blink blink.. there's light behind them eyes if you look close enough.. -
yep, taped on.. warm it up just a little bit to soften the tape gunk and saw through it behind the emblem with strong floss or fishing line. Surprising how many people walk up and compliment me on my nice Harley.. huh??
-
Are you referring to the loud annoying WHINE noise coming from the engine? I haven't heard it coming off of mine in ages.. I just got so used to it I don't hear it anymore
-
You mean the chrome eye browse on the fairing? Yes, those are double sided taped on.. you can slice the tape through with good flood or spider wire fishing line.. On a mid-cold day you can roll the tape goo up.. if you use chemicals, I find it makes such a mess.. All my bikes are de-badged.. If Yamaha wants to pay me to advertise for them, I'll be more than happy to put the badges back on.. Prolly why I'd never own a Harley.. everything is stamped HD on it.. sigh.. Did you take the ones off the tank sides?

Is my muffler shot? If so...now what?
Seaking replied to Semi-retired's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ideally, anything that will fit a 2000-ish Road King will work.. I've got a bunch of slippons I'm trying out and they all dry fit properly.. only prob is that I broke one of my nice chrome clamping collars.. I have a new pair coming in soon so I can try out the new LaRosa Downturns. A buddy of mine just bought himself a nice full dresser harley (full of alphabet letters.. ) and may let me have his rumblers as he doesn't like the sound from them.. sounds GREAT to me.. The only prob is that it only takes 1 hour to swap out pipes, I'll be changing them out dependent of what I wanna do! Long highway runs, OEM pipes or the Screamin Eagles.. to blast car alarms and raise a ruckus, the Larosa downturns.. Hmmm.. I think they'll be loud as I can see a lot of daylight through them.. -
PCW Racing Clutch Spring
Seaking replied to tsigwing's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
With 42,000 miles on my '06, I think it's experiencing some slipping when dropping the hammer on acceleration.. Not all the time but once in a while making it feel like it's anemic for some reason.. Thanks for the info.. -
This week I tried to install new turn down pipes I busted one of the exhaust clamps and can't find them locally anywhere. I got these with the screamin eagle slippons I had been riding with since last year.. got the new down turns and busted one of the clamps.. SO back to the OEM slippons until I find a new clamp.. Riding yesterday with the OEMs on I was surprised at a few observations.. some good and some bad.. I was hoping someone could let me know what's the what here.. I'll have to say that the pipe clamp on the OEM slippons can't be tightened much because of the nuts on the bold isn't 'tack welded' on anymore, allowing the nut to free turn when attempting to tighten the clamp onto the pipe.. and this MAY perhaps be what is causing my issues.. but not sure.. My 06 RSV with the roadking slippons feels like it has more oomph over stock.. I have the K&N air filters installed. My friend's 08 RSV is stock and doesn't feel as gutsy as mine does everytime I ride his.. My RSV with RK slippons and K&N filters doesn't get the great milage his bike enjoys.. but it's got a better sound and better giddyap and go factor. When I put the OEMs on, I found myself riding in 4th at 65 - 70 mph more readily, actually catching myself not realizing I'm actually in third wondering why my mirrors seem 'buzzy' until I try to shift into 5th but discovering I'm now in 4th.. I'm guessing is that I'm going by engine / exhaust noise and actually getting the revs way up there now.. But the pinch of the matter is that I am a bit concerned by the lack of power the bike is making when dropping the hammer, say like when you're on the on-ramp to a highway, merging into traffic.. you accelerate and the power curve seems to be hanging there.... and then it catches. I thought I might have been slipping the clutch until it worked itself out and caught.. strange sensation.. engine sounded normal.. but the sensation of acceleration felt quite hesitant.. I couldn't tell if I was actually accellerating or not as I was watching for traffic as I was merging on but the couple / three times this happened, it felt a lot like hang time waiting for the bike to 'catch' and accellerate.. I never had that with the roadking slippons installed.. when I dropped the hammer on the bike, I could bring it up to the rev limiter and you could feel it all accelerate evenly and smoothly. I want to see if my mileage comes up with the OEMs back on the bike, I'll be able to know after a couple of tanks of gas.. I don't know if this is how the RSV is normally behaving when running with OEM slippons or if the lack of tightened clamps is causing enough exhaust leaking to detrimentally affect the engine performance? Everything was super duper awesome on the bike before switching back to OEM.. Strangely enough, the sound of the OEM over the Roadking is from the rider position close enough when it's cool out (engine decelleration) but buddy riding behind me says it's a lot quieter than the roadking pipes.. Thoughts or ideas? if the power issue is resolved and enough of a fuel mileage increase is experienced, I may well just leave these on for the big trips but toss on the louder pipes for the fun local rides And does anyone know where to go that those darn chrome clamps used when installing Roadking slippons to a RSV??!! Cheers

Garage door opener mounted
Seaking replied to SteveP's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Good job.. I have mine mounted on the LEFT side so that I can reach it while still approaching the garage (so that the door will be open by the time I get there..). I took the guts out of the case so that it fits better under the cover (bulky remote) -
Any Ideas as to popping when off the throttle
Seaking replied to Brian D.'s topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Check for an article from Goose about being grateful for still having his AIS installed as it helped him find a prob with his engine.. it MAY lead you to find what's wrong with your bike.. could be anything from a weak/dead coil to a bad plug.. Best of luck.. -
Should put it on cycle to recondition the battery.. I've been lucky, my RSV sat 5 month in the deep freeze of winter in a friend's garage and turned over like a lick and ran well since.. However, when I was laid up for a few weeks, my buddy put the battery on a discharge / recharge to condition the battery and what a diff it makes.. Gotta like that! I understand it's WINTER down under but believe it or not, last week wasn't any warmer up here either with riding weather of 4'C and highs of 8'C for a few days. Summer's returned now with average temps of 12-18'C Where's all that global warming I keep hearing about?! sheesh!

Last word, final word on Jetting, please
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
As always, Goose, you come across with words of wisdom and leeway, good info, thanks. My VStar is highly modded with the air in and out that I'm fairly familiar with the general concepts though not to your level.. I wasn't too sure what a V4 would do with those turn down pipes.. I'll have to wait until I get the clamps to try them on.. But that might have to wait until I do more riding with the OEMs on the bike.. I noticed something different with them this time that I found very different than the last time I had them on.. could be the K&N filters, I'm not sure,,. But more on that later.. Thanks again M8- 8 replies

You have a date lol.. take about a week to get there from Nova Scotia but hey, what the heck =) If you guys can do a lot to train me to do my own maintenance it will be well worth the while! I couldn't get the proper clamps today so I put the OEM pipes back on.. I've been out for a ride with them on (first time since last year) and Hmmmm after this weekend's riding I'll have a strange report for you if all holds true to what I experienced today about the diffs of aftermarket vs OEM pipes..- 8 replies

Thanks to all for your responses.. my ride buddy's RSV is stock and I've ridden his bike and can tell you that mine has a bit more kick to it.. I went to change the pipes over to the downturn pipes and busted the clamp collar where the tightening bolt goes through.. weird.. So tomorrow morning, off to purchase two new ones (so they match) and try it again.. everything fits and hangs well.. Just waiting to hear what it sounds like hehe..- 8 replies

My 06 Venture has K7N Air filters and RoadKing Screaming Eagle slipons which sounds great, add a noticeable oomph of power boost (albeit small but noticeable over stock).. When I inquired about doing this, I had been told that "re-jetting" was NOT required.. I now have a new set of slip ons someone sent me as a return of favour (free!) and I'd love to try them on.. they fit a Roadking.. These are turn downs with beautiful chrome. When I look down either end, I can see light glowing in.. and the burner louvres (dunno what to call them..) I wonder how LOUD these will be.. I'm willing to give them a try, because as they say: Nothing Venture'd Nothing Gained.. =) But something got me a puzzlin though.. My buddy wants my Screamin Eagles to try on his bike but says that everyone he's talked to and everywhere he's read (other than here) claim and state that no matter what anyone else says, he needs to re-jet after installing any after market slipons.. My Venture runs GREAT as is, no rejetting or anything.. I remember this being more of an issue with VTwins like my VStar etc.. but huh? So what's the story here? With these new pipes I have, which seem more open than previous slipons, is re-jetting in my future? What say the learned guru-riders of the forum? Cheers, thanks in advance.

AIS to the Rescue (AGAIN)
Seaking replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Many thanks for this explanation Goose.. a local RSV rider was going to be removing his AIS (even though there wasn't any blurpling noises coming from his pipes) as he always removed his AIS from his other bikes (VStar).. I mentioned this article to him and now he's decided to leave everything as is.. just in case, ya never know.. I'll be checking my exhaust ports today when I cold start the bike.. just for the ****z and giggles.. ya never know! Cheers M8 -

2nd Gen Valve Adjustment
Seaking replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Dang.. my '06 bike has turned over the 40,000 miles mark this past week and most likely never had anything done to it under warranty (US bike brought into Canada, I'm the 3rd owner).. Looks like sometime soon this bike is gonna need a lot of TLC cause I love this bike.. it's a sweeeeet ride.. Thanks Goose.. I'll see if I can manage a winter trip down lol.. Cheers -

Well I think I know where I'm going this winter.. mind you, when your temps are decent we're under a lot of snow up here hehe.. But it would be a lot of fun.. Cheers -
Yep that's a good way of doing it but unfortunately the shops around here all carry the same same helmets and there is little choice to pick from.. so for some of those 'great' helmets.. I can't find one locally to try on.. No worries.. a lot of good suggestions here.. Cheers
