  1. hence why important to have all your lights aimed properly Inspite of all the size of our bikes, the street lights, the lights ON the bike and all, I almost got clipped by a drunken teen ager last night. Luckily I was able to hit the air horn and make her notice me before she would have jammed me into the barrier.. I got off the bike and started to chew her out when I realized she was plastered.. (it would explain the wild lane change going through the intersection).. I held her there and dialed 911.. because of it being a friday night, this stupid 19 yr old will be spending the weekend in cells until her appearance on monday.. hell of a way to start her college year.. I almost felt sorry for her.. 'almost'..
  2. In Nova Scotia, as in Ontario I believe, we do not have any stipulations about when or how highway lamps work on the bike.. I run with mine ON 24/7 all the time. My idle is set properly (not low) and to this day have not had any probs with starts or such.. in fact, after a 2 hour 'battery test' the bike started ok. I have mine wired so that the ON/OFF switch is behind the left fairing next to the aux power outlet. This winter I'll be moving that switch to somewhere more manageable. There are times that while riding in groups with out motorcycle club, it's preferable that only the last bike, the sweep, has his highway lights on to be visible to the lead. keep in mind that highway lights, especially during the day time, gives oncoming traffic the illusion of a bigger blob of light coming towards them, thus hopefully making you more noticeable that a single headlight. Be seen.. big lights..
  3. Look like the same ones I've had on my bike for a few years
  4. Stretched bolts?! wow.. I LOVE the PCW clutch and yes, they were top notch in assistance.. I had a brain fart on my installation where I got confused with the friction plates and gave them a call.. he walked me through it and just hearing it explained made more sense than reading it off the page.. Go figure.. lol Drop the hammer on the bike now is like wow.. I also installed a Dyna3000 on the bike the other day and still sorting out what it feels like.. the D3K smoothed things out a lot I must say...
  5. For me it's also a safety issue matter.. I've dropped the bike twice in traffic when my pant leg, of all things, got hung up on the heel part of the shifter causing me to flinch when I went to put my foot down for the stop. The inside pant leg seam of the jeans catches on the heel part every once in a while and snags.. It does it on the three different jeans I normally wear when riding. Needless to say, I wasn't sure what happened the first time I dropped the bike in this case but once I figured what my leg was snagging, I try to remember to keep my leg out more.. but once I cut that useless chunk off my shifter, I'll be a happier man..
  6. None of the Star vehicles I have had with heel - toe shifters felt 'right' using the heel portion.. so I have them machined off so that it leaves me with just the toe part.. On the Venture, I find the heel part impeding comfortable foot placement on the floorboard for some reason.. so this winter I'm lopping it off..
  7. Hmm when I push back the pistons, I do it by hand and open the bleed port, making sure to close it before release any squeeze on the piston lest air get sucked back into the caliper.. It's a balancing act The reservoir, after I was done, needed more fluid which in the long run is 'refreshing' the fluid already there sorta way as well. test rode the bike this morning and promptly locked up the rear wheel by accident.. oops, wow, that's a lot of braking power there again Nice!! Sadly enough though, after a bit of a ride, and NOT using any rear brake what so ever, I can feel a lot of heat on the disc from the pads rubbing.. sigh.. Hopefully these will last me the rest of the season.. if all goes well, my 2006 Midnight Venture will have over 50,000 miles on it.. I've put over 30,000 miles on the bike since getting it last summer. Not bad I should think hehe
  8. Certainly IS a consideration to try.. every rear pad I've pulled off showed a lot of heavy wear at the back part (where it is the leading edge of the disc to pad contact...).. Anyone else try this? I have steel braided (black) front brake lines coming in and once I have those on, I may try the shim thing.. ya never know.. I installed the DoubleH sintered pads this time on the rear to see if that changes anything..
  9. unfortunately the lip at the outer edge of the disk is significant enough that the pads could not be pulled straight out of the top but requires the removal of the caliper to get them out.. Of course then you have to push back the pistons and bleed the brakes etc etc to accommodate the large sized newer pads..
  10. Thanks.. I would have to say there looks to have been metal to metal contact for sure.. I'll be looking at taking the caliper apart this winter for a proper cleaning and perhaps getting the disc dressed up as well (taking ridges off).. From what I've been told and have been reading is that the rear brakes on these bikes are notorious for the inside pads to wear long before the outside pad, thus not making it easy to spot the wear early enough to change pads.. From now on, I'll be changing them a hell of a lot sooner than I had this time. As others also mentioned, flipping the pads will give you a bit more time. Such an odd system set up for brakes.. I took a deep careful look at the front ones and found a lot of pad left.. a lot! However, this winter, off they go for some serious cleaning.. Cheers
  11. I did my rear brake pads today, again it got down to just about metal on metal wear while out on the last road trip.. The inside pad wears out much sooner than the outer pad and seems to wear even more at the back of the pad.. this is where the metal on metal wear was just about ready to start.. I looked at the disc carefully and am not sure if mine is pooched or if this is the way it is supposed to be where as the outer most edge of the disk is thicker than the surface where the pads contact.. In other words, if I were to tighten down a C-Clamp half down the contact surface of the disc, I would not be able to slide if up and off as there is a 'shoulder' at the outer most edge.. Is it possible that previous pads might have ground down into the disc thus making it 'unserviceable'? Are new discs expensive? Are there better alternatives? Can the existing ones be dressed or cleaned up? On the same note, if your discs are 'glazed' from the pads, how do you un-glaze them? Cheers!
  12. First thing *I* noticed was that you have 4 way flashers with the engine OFF.. Now that's what *I* want.. Your setup is wild and attention getting.. which is what you really need..
  13. Of course that's what I'm looking for (slaps forehead).. Many thanks M8.. =) "Installed" Egads, who designed this bike, a yap slap up side the head for him.. wow. Install was easy enough but pulling the old one out was a bear of a job, wiring caught in front of the unit caused a lot of probs but I managed to slowly wriggle it out.. luckily the new one is slightly smaller and slipped in nice and easy.. set at 7250 rev limiter and curve 4.. Remember, it's just a peace of mind replacement of the old one after all the probs I encountered this summer.. keeping the old one as a 'spare'.. Now, synch the carbs and go test riding tonight.. I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers
  14. After all the probs I had on the bike this summer with electricals on the engine, I opted to pick up a new ignition module (D3K) just for the peace of mind kinda thing.. Erhm can someone point out as to where this is located on the bike? None of the docs I have even mention it let alone say where it is.. Thanks in advance..
  15. How does one adjust the lamps so that they aren't pointing to 5 feet in front of the bike? I went into Maine to get my shock replaced under warranty and luck would have it that my light bar wiring got munged somewhere and they were nice enough to repair the wiring.. Unfortunately, when they removed the light back and put it back on, the beams are pointing way too close to the bike, useless.. I can't see how these get adjusted up or anything other than sideways.. Conversely speaking, are there replacement units to try something OTHER than the Yamaha light bar? No matter what I do they cause a vibe to the bike and bar.. annoying as well.. they are on tight but vibe.. Cheers
  16. I recently installed a heady duty clutch kit in my 07 and man my hand got horribly sore in traffic, to the point I'd avoid congested areas.. But funny enough, muscle memory kicked in and now I hardly notice it.. But I do know what you mean, my VStar with it's HD clutch kit gave me the same prob.. I've head of many people refer to that off set device you mentioned, sort of like changing the fulcrum point of the lever making it so much easier to do the work than before.. Heard of it, never seen it or found it..
  17. I did mine in Aug after the clutch slipped hugely on me.. I changed out everything and then went out on a 4500 mile road trip a few days later.. wowsers.. what a HUGE difference.. i thought my fuel mileage would improve since there would be so much less wasted slipping but unfortunately i got the need for speed syndrome and dropped the hammer when ever possible.. =) Nothing like riding with your hair on fire =) Awesome upgrade!
  18. The restrictors they talk abut are about 1 inch or so and would fit inside one of the long tubes that you're using to connect the CarbTune to the carb ports.. What you're supposed to do is cut the line in 2 and splice them up again using those small solid tubes, this then creates the 'restriction' required to prevent the bouncing.. Typically you would cut the tube up closer towards the carb tune so that it doesn't snag up at the bike end of the long tube.. I hope that explains it a bit better.. ?
  19. yeah, I've JUST changed my clutch at 47,000+ miles.. I certainly don't want to risk anything.. When I get back I may be looking at going to synthetic oils.. or not.. lol.. I'm putting so many miles on this bike that I end up doing a lot of oil changes.. And I don't have a lot of options as to what to use.. yamalube ($10 a litre) or BelRay ($7 a litre)
  20. Thanks M8.. I was leary of it to start but thought best to ask.. Just that Lucas oils are 'car' stuff.. and not necessarily for bikes, the stuff don't mix ya know? Two nay sayers is enough for me.. Besides, shouldn't an oil stand on it's own without the need of additives??? Cheers
  21. ME next!! Need a winter project so this would work out nicely =)
  22. What Goose said, and I would add check your fuel filter.. strangely enough I suffered a weird problem earlier this year where the filter was so clogged it wouldn't let the pump suck enough fuel through to run the bike when the fuel level got to just before Reserve, as it wasn't getting any head pressure assist from the full tank of fuel.. later this resulted in a premature failure of the fuel pump.. If your 07 has never had a fuel filter change, or even if you suspect contaminated fuel while out on the road, have a boo at the fuel filter.. My 2 cents.. Please do let us know what transpires..
  23. Well, I'm heading down to Newport Maine to get my replacement shock under warranty.. whoooo.. I didn't know mine was shot until the shop in PA pointed it out to me.. So this coming friday, I'll have a new shock and enjoying a less than bouncy ride on this bike of mine.. Nothing like a 800 KM road trip to get warranty work done hehe.. =) Anyone up for a ride?
  24. Has anyone heard or seen any issues of using Lucas Oil stabilizer in their 10W40 oil on the Venture? I've had several people tell me it's worth the while to add in, about 20% of the fluid for an oil change. I'm soon ready to do an oil change (BelRay 10W40) and wondering if it's worth the while. I can get it from a buddy at a good price so I'm not going to be spending a lot on it, but don't know if it will be detrimental to the bike or not.. I've just put a new HD clutch kit in the bike and getting ready to go on a road trip at the end of the week..
  25. What's that.. like 2 hours each way
