Well here's the SAD part.. I tried to do a purchase of 4 bottles of AMSOIL 10W40 and 1 filter online, came to a total of $87 including taxes.. plus shipping, but I won't get to see what the shipping cost will be until AFTER I make the purchase by entering all my credit card info.. I have this funny feeling that the shipping charges on top of all this will now make this inexpensive bottle of oil as expensive as what I paid at the bike shop.. If anything, I might either save a buck or two or end up spending $25 more just on the shipping.. I've sent them an email asking what the shipping charges may be.. Must be a lot easier in the US..

spark plugs and gap

Now that's a bummer.. no yellow fancy looking doodads on my wires then.. thanks! -
Hi folks.. I'll soon be installing a new rear disc and pads on my 2006 RSV.. mine is so badly cut into, there is a pronounced lip at the outer edge of the disc that now cuts into the new pads I install. Fun huh Once I have the new disc and HH pads installed, brakes bled and pistons cleaned up, what's the proper way of 'breaking them in'? A fast speed slam the brake on, or a slow long progressive application of the brakes or frequent on off applications? I recall someone telling me about not doing it a certain way to prevent 'glazing' the disc right away, thus defeating the benefit of a new disc.. Any thoughts on this? Hopefully soon I'll be all braided steel lines and the new rear brakes.. Thanks in advance.

Hi Goose, I never got the chance to see the new / old coils when they changed them out in PA this past summer so this might sound like a silly question: Are you saying that the ignition wires from the spark plug to the coils are built into the coil, not a plug in or bolt onto type of deal like say a V-Star? Never thought of that.. Always an education around here, thanks!! -
Your same ol Yamaha filter and Kawasaki synthetic oil.. cheapest combo available here.. and reportedly good combo.. Other here will list what they like and use..

spark plugs and gap

egads man.. if *I* can do it, trust me YOU can do it. See if you can search up a RSV manual online or at a local shop and read up.. some of it does appear to be intimidating at first but once you've done some tasks, you'll ask yourself afterwards why you were so shy about it at first.. And you have all kinds of wonderful people here who are more than happy to help you out if you encounter any probs.. Cheers -
Hang on, lemme put my Kevlar on first before giving you an 'opinion'.. From what I have read and heard from many who have used RP, and I have used it before in my VStar, it's an excellent product.. It's hard to obtain where I live though.. The consistency of it reminds me of chainsaw bar lube oil with actually a purple tinge to it.. so weird looking.. makes you wonder if you got the right stuff or not. I found it worked great in the VStar, but couldn't find anymore locally so couldn't use it for more than about 3 oil changes. from what I have read online (sorry, can't provide urls or reviews and such) is that it's an excellent product, especially if you're riding a high revving racing bike that takes a lot of punishment.. some consider RP an overkill for touring / cruising bikes but by all means an excellent oil.. The only 'cons" I found with it was cost and availability in my area. Opinions are like 'elbows', everyone's got at least one..

I hear what you're saying, Joe.. consider that I merely reported what *I* had read.. and by no means claiming it as gospel.. keep that in mind.. you're shooting the messenger here..

vibration at 70mph
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
46 in the rear tire sounds high to me, though some people ride them to the full max.. 42 lbs should do you better for handling and wear.. the front shocks have a max limit of 10 psi if I am not mistaken, so it being at 14 might have caused some damage? Not sure.. but you should find it handling better at even pressures.. If you find your front forks leaking or bouncing too much, perhaps doing a Progressive Spring upgrade might be in order.. maybe? -
spark plugs and gap
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've never done the wires, seems simple enough though waiting to hear from the experienced guys on this one.. As for the spark plug on a 2nd Gen, it looks complicated but it's not really.. Remove the tank, front engine side braces and the plugs come out easily.. I take one brace off at a time and retorque it upon installation before undoing the opposite side one, out of force of habit from previous mech career.. first time might seem 'daunting' but once you do your first one, it's all easy after that.. -
spark plugs and gap

OH! (red faced) lol.. I just got schooled =) That's what I normally do with the spark gap, split the middle but for no apparent reason other than blind luck I guess.. So far so good, every time I change my plugs, the old ones look like new.. but they are inexpensive enough to warrant changing them when ever possible.. but that's just me... Thanks for the schooling on both matters hehe -
vibration at 70mph
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OH.. then that's what "speed" feels like.. The faster I go on mine, and higher the revs, say 80 mph in 4th (and faster), the bike is like screaming down rails, rock tight and smoooooooth.. freaky as heck! Almost like you're going faster than the speed of sound and vibes.. well almost Any other RSV riders in your area you trust enough to take your bike out on a test run to see if it's similar to theirs? My buddy's 2008 RSV feels very different to my 2006, but similar enough... his vibes, slight ones, are in different ranges and speeds.. nothing extraordinary or to worry about.. Are the vibes that you are experiencing causing you any annoyances or feelings of danger, or are they just there and you are curious about it, as to what might cause them and what can you hopefully do to remedy them? -
Joe, please, show your documentation, other than that of the manufacturer that says this stuff is the cat's meow.. all that I'm just saying is what I came across while doing research on this stuff.. by all means use it if you think its great.. I might try it myself but just relating what I had read about it in a few review articles. But to put your mind at ease, I'll take a few hours from my schedule tonight and see if I can find those articles again so you can read them also.. and start a war with them.. don't start one with me, I'm just the messenger..

spark plugs and gap
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Nice if he had a 1st Gen.. Speaking of spark plugs and GAP.. the book states a MAX - MIN gap, is it usually better to have a bigger or smaller gap within that range? -
vibration at 70mph
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Too add a little to this: speed and gears.. if you experience the vibes at 70 mph in both 4th and 5th, then you've most likely ruled out engine or drive train as part of the culprit.. then you're looking at something constant, like the wheels, bearings, something loose on the bike.. etc.. If it comes and goes depending on the gears at same speed, then it's mechanical.. -

just wee lad are ye? Consider that the manuals refer to an 'average rider' to be 6 foot tall and 160 lbs on the hoof, I haven't seen too many wee lads like that in ages.. So consider you're close a person and a half.. riding up with a wee child on the back.. what works for me, and perhaps for you, is 40 in the front, 42 in the rear, 47 in rear shock and 5 in front shocks.. you'll want to be careful when doing the front shocks as to not blow them out.. You can play with those pressures until you find something that suites your needs.. -
Up here they recommend 10W40 mostly because it doesn't always get warm, even in the summer.. however, if I know I'm going to run hard down in the USA where it's been hot hot I'll run 5W20.. but generally speaking, 10W40 works for me..
-
The Dunlopp 404 that typically come with the bike are bad for that.. however the E3 tires by Dunlopp are better.. I keep mind at 41 PSI front and 42 PSI rear and they'll last a long time and not give me any squigglies where other might experience them.. Here's something to toss out there, in the past, the road snakes were mostly tar based, but lately they've been using a silicone based material that reaaaaally makes it wildly not nice to encounter.. One of our popular bike runs was littered with these new compound snakes and usually all in the turns which really scared a few people.. scary.. I noticed it also but apparently a lot less than others..

at $10 a bottle I'd use AMSOIL more often but how do you get their oil for that price? Do you have to order it and have it shipped to your home or do they send you a voucher that you then apply at point of purchase? Cheers M8

Do you have the Yamaha Trunk Bag?
Seaking replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
if you go into some major camping store they sell oem rain bags that really works well.. I got one here, they come in various sizes and it works really well.. I currently use it to store my sheepskin in if we get caught in the rain and I don't want to sit on a wet sheep.. -
vibration at 70mph
Seaking replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
yes, that too. I often forget mentioning that because I do mine so often lol A common symptom of carbs out of synch is heavy vibes in the mirrors.. -
Start from the cheapest and easiest and work your way up to the more difficult and expensive.. Tires: Are they shyte tires, low on pressure, showing odd wear? Are you experiencing this mostly when hitting road snakes (long swervy tar lines in the road) Forks: Uneven pressures will cause some effects.. could be as simple as uneven air pressure or a leak in your forks.. Neck Bearings: Put the bike up on a jack so the bike is upright, and push the bars to both sides, let it swing on it's own.. when it hits the stops, it should bounce back slightly and stop.. if it bangs back and forth a lot (like mine did) then your bearings are loose and you'll need to either do the quick tightening explained in other articles or get the bearings greased. All of these things affected my steering this summer and replacing old tires, equalizing the fork pressures and especially getting the neck tightened made the world of difference.. best of luck!
