  1. My family is military. We grew up in the military, traveling every 3yrs or so as a way of life. My Dad was a Chief Master Sargent for the Air Force, My sister just retired as a Full Colonel with the Air Force, my other sister married Air Force and my brother and I were lowly grunts, he in the Marine Corp, and I with the Rangers. Needless to say we have, and had, been scattered all over this globe. At one time my Dad was stationed in Turkey, my brother in Italy, I in Kansas, and the rest were holed up in Texas. So in 1982 at the end of my service career we were all coming together for Christmas for the 1st time as a family since 1976 when I had left for the military. I remember that the gifts under the tree were about to overtake the living room. I remember losing count around 120 or so. I cannot remember what 1 present was but I do remember the joy of all of us being together again! That is what made the Christmas of 82 so special!!! I have a picture of the seven of us hanging on my office wall from then. It was the last picture of us taken of all of us together. We have gone on in the military tradition of being scattered!
  2. Back in the 90's my brother and my Dad worked for 7-11 in San Antonio, TX. At the time the store policy was not to prosecute if they were robbed. Every nickel and dime hoodlum or punk knew this and would take their chances robbing 7-11! The cops also would not respond unless the perpetrator was still in the store. My brother told me one instance were the cashier chased down the punk who had run from the store, whupped the individual senseless, and drugged him back into the store, before calling the authorities. The assailant was crying about his rights the whole time he was being handcuffed and carried away which had the cops laughing in disbelief!! That was one for the good guys! My brother, unbeknownst to some would be thieves, locked the door once when he knew he was getting ready to be robbed! He yelled at them when they committed their act. They immediately bolted for the entrance with the first knocking himself out upon hitting the locked glass door The one in the rear only sustained minor injuries due to his buddy cushioning the crash or so my brother says. Anyhow that is what he told the authorities who were kind enough to overlook his raw knuckles!! I got to hear a lot of funny stories like that but I still was glad when my elderly Dad finally quit! What a senseless, chickens--t, way to run a business!
  3. I would love to say it was kindness, but after checking prices for a trunk it was purely selfishness!!! I am really excited for your project though and cannot wait to see pictures of the outcome!
  4. My RSTD quick attach/remove sissy bar (with backrest) for your "quick remove" bracket system and trunk!
  5. Here is one for you to test your mettle! It's wooden and it sways!! OH Fun! Coming from a guy that use to jump outta airplanes in flight!! Also for those inclined, try the High Five interstate overpasses in Dallas, TX! http://jeremywoodhouse.photodeck.com/media/0d069492-c1af-11df-af38-00270e09af22-low-angle-view-of-interchange-overpasses-high-five-interchange
  6. Although this article is geared toward construction, http://www.finehomebuilding.com/how-to/articles/arm-hand-pain-on-job-site.aspx , I found it very helpful in understanding why I was getting pain in my hands. When riding I usually have the cruise engaged and my right hand in a relaxed position. It is my left hand that will sometimes give me fits, especially if I wear a glove. The hand will go numb like it has fallen asleep. After reading the article I now try to find a neutral position for my hand when I feel those symptoms coming on. I should also do the stretching exercises recommended, but nah to lazy!! If you visit the above site, make sure to check out the "Wrist anatomy" The picture and description is worth it! Cramp Busters (2 each) soon to be in my Christmas Stocking! Thanks!!
  7. At church, I bring it in. It is always a conversation piece, especially during winter, and leads to good fellowship! I use to do the same at the local restaurants in and around Chattanooga, TN but one of the bikers informed me that most leave theirs on their bikes. So now I hang my on my foot peg. I do this also while camping during my travels. Only time I consider securing it is when we might stay in a hotel, which is infrequent!
  8. I was just thinking my camping spot needed more shade. She is a class act, glad you married up!!!
  9. Someone at church mentioned the Deer Device to me. After leaving Glacier NP and heading the back roads to Helena, MT we spent most of our scenic drive on deer watch. They were more numerous then fly's at a cook out! I realized this site would have the most up to date, scientific, research data available to mankind! Once again I am not disappointed!!!
  10. It embarrassing when you see some one emulating you, especially when you are trying to lead such a modest life!!!
  11. I think we will head down there Saturday! Weather suppose to be nice and that was all the excuse I really needed. Hope to see you there RandyR!!
  12. After 31,000 miles it is time to replace my Kumho tire. I have been well satisfied with her travelling to Texas, to Utah, crossing the pass near Breckenridge, Colorado at about 11,500 feet, riding the Highway to the Sun, in Glacier NP, Montana, and visiting Ohio for our MD at Don's. All those miles and the tire preformed flawlessly! Time to see for myself, now that I have personnel experience with a car tire, what difference going back to a motorcycle tire will do for my bike. I read an excellent article recently in one of the Bike magazines regarding why one should not turn to the darkside. I bow my head to their wisdom and knowledge. My decision to leave the darkside is not based on this article though. My experience, with the car tire, just does not track with what they are saying. Leaving the darkside, at least for the life of one motorcycle tire, is my way of figuring out what is best for my bike. I ordered an Avon Venom this morning.
  13. Battery dead this morning! I had been wondering how long she might last!? Been 7yrs and not once did I ever have a problem. When I went for 3 weeks this past month to the Bitterroots of Montana, Canada, Glacier National Park, and back to Tennessee I had thought about installing a new one but I to curious to see just how long the original would go. I usually have my trailer hooked up but I been running led's in those trailer lights since the beginning. I also installed a led rear light after the 1st couple of years! She was a damn good battery Although my morning ride to the Ocoee river did not happen I am glad that she died at home! Batteries Plus has me back on the road again!
  14. Savannah, GA to Houston, TX 1000+ miles ALL DANG DAY, in 1982 at age 22 on a 78 Suzuki 550. Had to continue to San Antonio, TX 200 miles the next day really did not want to get back on that bike. Redding, CA to Phonix, AZ 996 miles in 2009 at age 50 on the RSTD. Long and Hot Day. The Ultimate seat paid dividends!! Although tired my rear was fine! Love 300 mile days when traveling! I stop often, enjoy the journey, and have plenty of daylight to set up camp!!
  15. I did this modification back in 2009. Bike runs good today averaging between 39 to 45 mpg, I did have the chrome cap on one of the filters fall off, just as another member had mentioned. Glued it back on and had no further problems! Hope this helps!! http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30999
  16. Done, and happy to be a part of this family!!!! Have no need for a trailer so please do not add me to the raffle!
  17. Finally tried some Unscented Pledge! Very Pleased!!!!
  18. I showed up in 76 and after 2 "Reforgers", left in 79! I consider that the enema pit of the world!! I did enjoy those European trips though!
  19. I was 20 and bought a new 78 Suzuki 550E while in Ft. Ridiculous, KS. I was just a tad short on the cash and my dad loaned me $800. At that time I was making $425 a month as a lowly corporal. I promptly paid him off in 2 months living on $25 each month thanks to the barracks and chow hall. After that I took 33 days worth of leave, threw all the camping gear the bike would hold, and my 12 yr old brother on the back, (mom about had a coronary over that one) and rode 6600 miles around the country! Yhea, I had it bad even back then!!!! It was a great bike and I wish I still had her!!
  20. Sat on one at the Bike Show in Greenville, SC last year and took an immediate dislike to it. Like Don, I think my height just wasn't agreeable with her! Or maybe it's that I think my 05 RSTD is the best looking girl out there!!! Yhea, I know, I got it bad~!
  21. Put my Kumho 165/80 R15 on in Jan 2010 with 25K miles on the bike. The Honda dealership could not seat the tire since their air tank capacity ended at 80psi. Fortunately another associate from here had a friend whose tank exceeded the 110+/- psi it took to seat her. The "pop" made me jump. That has been my only "negative" experience with the tire. After 2yrs and 20K+ hard riding miles usually hauling a heavy trailer (some of you have seen her) I have no regrets! I cannot tell that any tread has been worn off. I keep her inflated at 40psi and the dyna beads I put in her work. I always thought I would return to a mc tire after this just to see what I might be missing handling wise, but na! I'm sticking to the dark side!!!
  22. My riding buddy carries a turkey baster, which in an emergency he can use to siphon some fuel from another's bike. I always though that was an excellent item for an emergency situation. Granted it not much use if riding alone. But there is always another biker coming along eventually and we do tend to stop for each other!
