  1. I'd like one too. Let me know what you decide cause if you do not go ahead with this order I will order one for myself.
  2. Well, as the originator of this thread I thought I had better report back. I did purchase another Garmin..a Nuvi 550. Screen is not as big as Nuvi 265WT, but brighter colors and I think easier to see in daylight. AND yes, you can download routes you have made on Mapquest to it. However, it is not all gravy and there are some problems. I had hoped I could put in a route on Mapquest. For instance, Swift Current, Sask., Canada to Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Mapquest does this tickity boo. Then I clicked and dragged the colored route mapquest makes to go through the cities or roads i want to go. This is how I always do it and then print it out. HOWEVER, this will not download to the Garmin GPS. Imagine my surprise when I fired up the GPS to find it routed me through Calgary, Alberta. So, the trick is this...you must put in waypoints to force it on the routes and roads/intersections you want to use. Rather a pain in the butt, and not as easy as I thought it would be. I almost sent the GPS back. I want to be able to pick my route anywhere, and via whatever route i want...especially riding a motorcycle. Yes my route (say through Edmonton, AB) is not the faster or shortest but it may be the safest i can make it. Garmin says this defeats the purpose of the GPS unit choosing routes for you; and I replied that if I was sure their maps were correct I might let it choose the route. Just in our small city of 14,000 and 1 hour of driving around it has tried to send me on three roads across RR tracks, that aren't there. It also tries to sent me on an overpass from a road that does not access it. I noticed all the new areas of town are correct, and even some roads not completed are there, but roads that have NEVER been in existence should never be shown as a gps choice. If they are that bad here, what is it like for a country bumpkin like me to try and use it in Toronto, Seattle etc etc. Wow I can just imagine me looking at a highway or freeway etc from about 4 blocks away and no clue how to get on the dang thing. Oh yes, mine tried to send me down a one way the wrong way. However, this was after I had deliberately not taken the route it originally chose. OK, venting turned off now. Feel better. Like a lot of people say, don't rely on the GPS alone and consult maps, use your eyes and brain.
  3. Thanks Wayne. Excellent! You are the man. Solved my all my questions. OK. Now just have to find a suitable Garmin I definetely want to be able to download routes. I am returning the Nuvi 265WT. I do not want the FM traffic nor bluetooth on the motorcycle, so that also eliminates the 755/765/785 type. I think I am leaning towards the Nuvi 550. Hopefully I can find it for a lower price than what I have been seeing the last week or two. Boxing Day Sale maybe? Once again, thanks to all!
  4. Thanks Dave..that is exactly what I wanted. Now if someone had city maps for North America, and a Nuvi 765 etc then I would be really happy with a result. Anyone??
  5. Mapquest uses the same 'garmin communication' software that the Harley one uses. So, if you go to the website I posted, you should be able to hit the 'send' button to your gps and it should load it as a route. I just want to see if the route comes through as i planned on mapquest. If so, then i will begin to look for a GPS that allows routes to be downloaded. Thanks everyone.
  6. Thanks Keith. I would like a Zumo, but my wallet doesn't like them! Plan on buying some sort of Nuvi instead. However, that forum may have the answer providing the Nuvi and Zumo treat routes the same way.
  7. Hi folks. Am looking at buying a garmin GPS unit but am not sure if I am comparing apples to oranges! The GPS Garmin I have now is a 265WT and I made a trip by saying 'Go to' (note that I am in Swift Current, Sask. Canada) to Jasper, Alberta, Canada. I then added North Battleford, Sask. Canada as a 'Via' route. However, by doing this the GPS wants to take me into North Battleford town (not necessary) and will not let me choose the route through Edmonton, Alberta. I have created this trip with my choses routes through Edmonton and a little jog in the highway between Edmonton and Jasper. I made it at mapquest.com and here it is. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Swift+Current&1s=SK&1y=CA&1l=50.292759&1g=-107.800552&1v=CITY&2c=Jasper&2s=AB&2y=CA&2l=52.873638&2g=-118.082649&2v=CITY#b/maps/m:map:8:52.818052:-108.391253::::::1:1::::/l:::Swift+Current:SK::CA:50.292759:-107.800552:city::1:::/l::Provincial+Route+216+W;+Anthony+Henday+Dr+NW:::::53.456428:-113.344398:latlng::2:::/l::Provincial+Route+22:::::53.722831:-115.130195:latlng::2:::/l:::Jasper:AB::CA:52.873638:-118.082649:city::1:::/io:1:::::f:en_US:M::/bl:/e Kinda long address isn't it. Could someone who has a Garmin GPS that can download routes do this on their machine and make sure that all the particular streets (in Edmonton) etc do come through? If it does, then I think I want a GPS that lets me download routes so I can plan my motorcycle trips all winter and then download them with all the correct turns etc rather than letting the GPS decide which highway etc to use. Thanks guys and it sure will help me decide what GPS unit to buy.
  8. The basket change was worth it in my case. 2005 RSV. I don't know what letter basket was put in as the dealer didn't know they were etched on the side. Duh. I showed him it was on the one taken out, a "G". OK, as for what I call the "crickets". On my bike, with my old 3/4 it was almost impossible to ride without ear plugs. It was SO ANNOYING, especially 100-110 kph. With ear plugs, or my full face I hardly heard them. After the switch I wear my 3/4 all the time. I can still hear the crickets, but quite a bit less..about 80% less. RPM (or speed) did not seem to change at which they were audible. I am assuming that they will eventually return but so far have 5-6000K and still happy. Note that I said "crickets" and not the whine! My sound was a definite chirp and seemed to be in stereo. Hope it works out for you.
  9. Yes there were only 2 baffles in each. I looked straight through end to end so there are no more. The low rumble at cruising speed seems to come from down below as before, but when you get on it, the sound comes from behind. Weird huh? Weird or not it sounds good...lucky for you SilvrT cause I was definitely gonna blame you! Gotta a beer for ya next time we meet OK? Thanks for the help.
  10. Did the dirty deed today and drilled out the baffles. At first I was a little disappointed because it was not much louder or deeper idling in the garage. But is like SilvrT says, it comes alive when you get on it. I really like it. It is not much louder than stock RK at highway but you can definitely hear it when you twist the throttle. My GW riding buddy was behind me today and he could hear me everytime I opened it up, but otherwise not. Just curious SilvrT, you mentioned drilling all 3 of the baffles out...where are they? I found two in each muffler and had to drill from front and rear on each one to get them out. Or did you have one muffler with only 1 and 2 in the other??
  11. Forgot to mention that since I just bought the bike around May or so, I had the carbs synced almost right away. Sync was fine. As far as the acceleration thing, it probably was there right from the start.
  12. I have noticed that my 2005 RSV 'seems' to have uneven acceleration. At highway speeds in either 4th or 5th if I roll on the throttle I think it is more responsive just before wide open. If I roll it wide open, it still accelerates, but I 'feel' it is not as strong. This bike has the power to pull out and pass, no problem. Gas mileage is good, and I have recently replace plugs and fuel filter, and air filters look good. Bike has about 24000 miles on it. New Elite III tires. I have tried it for top speed one day. Needle went way up there, but did not bury it (about 190 -195 km/hr or close to 115 mph). That doesn't matter to me, but I include that in case someone has any ideas. So anyone have any suggestions? I will ride the bike the way it is and be happy..it is just one of those things that I would like to address. I had an old 81 GW that had the same symptoms, but much much worse. Wide open it would barely accelerate. That turned out to be worn needles etc; and nothing a bunch of money wouldn't cure:mad:. Thanks.
  13. Sure thing. I went out for a better test ride today, about 60 miles. I can still hear the whine, and occassionally I can hear the crickets. However, it is quite faint. I am wondering if they won't come back in a few thousand K's? Who knows, but at least I tried. Am off to the dealer now to try and see what basket I had, and what was put in. He didn't seem to know much about 'I' baskets.
  14. OK folks, just an update. I must stress that my problem has been a 'Chirp' and not a whine. I do hear a whine, but when the dreaded steroid twin cricket brothers get going there is nothing that will cover it up. A full faced helmet almost eliminates it, but a half or 3/4 was impossible without ear plugs. Of course, with ear plugs the stereo system had to be set wide open to hear anything of music or CB. It damn near took my ears right off when I left the settings as they were for the last ride, and went to show someone my stereo system in the garage and hit the speaker 'on' switch. Now to get down to brass tacks. I had my clutch basket replaced today. This is in Canada, and they would only replace it once. If I did not like it...too bad or pay them to put the old clutch basket back in. Yamaha Canada also says this is not a warrenty, but seems to treat it as a good will jesture and says they really don't have to do this. I have no idea if it was replaced by an 'I' basket or 'Z' basket...it was what Yamaha Canada sent them. Whatever! All I know is it worked. Mind you I only put on about 5 miles driving home today, but what a beautiful ride with a 3/4 helmet and listen to the motor and wind. NOT them @*&$ crickets that would somehow harmonize in both ears and drive straight into my brain! I just hope this lasts for a lot of kilometers. Looking forward to a big motorcycle trip in Sept now, and not dreading having to bring along two helmets and all the ear plugs I could find. Let me be clear here. I can still hear some sort of whine and I suppose it could bother a concert pianist or violin player. But it sounds sweet to me because the cricket chirp is NOT there. With my bike I was at the point where I figured it could not get any worse...and if it did I would not hear it because of the ear plugs anyway. So bottom line is it is great. I will go back to yamaha dealer tomorrow and speak to the repair/mechanic person. I want to speak with them, and look at old clutch basket etc. Do not know if I will ever find anything out, but I can recommend it for any bike that sounds like mine. I have read many posts here from others, and even personally talked to them. I feel that what one person thinks is a bad whine is really not all that bad. Gosh now I sound a dealer! I wish that we could ride each others bikes and compare sounds....guess I should have made the Kooteny ride heh? Hope this helps someone.
  15. He is in my thoughts and prayers. Wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

SPARE? What spare? Are you saying we should carry a spare bolt?
  17. OK guys. I am thinking of installing the round air vents on my RSV. I am hoping that will give a bit more air circulation behind windshield, and perhaps stop rain from sticking to inside of windshield. If these round vents will not help with this, please let me know now before I install. For Squidley and V7GOOSE who have installed before...or anyone else too. Is it better to install two or just one vent? Is there an optimum distance to measure from the outer chrome strip ie how high to make the hole? Not sure from pics, but I assume this round vent will intrude inwards and could contact dash? Or am I all wet here? Thanks. Any and all help greatly appreciated.
  18. Just had to reply to this thread today, as I had a similar experience. Was travelling with the fuel petcock to 'on'. At 275 km (about 165 miles) the low fuel light came on and the fuel counter started counting up. From past experience, I know that I might as well switch petcodk to 'res' because I will run out in 2 to 10 km anyway. Well, lo and behold, after switching, I started missing, bogging down, etc etc. Kept switching the fuel petcock back and forth but eventually ran out of fuel within about 5 km from my destination. I coasted to a stop, and turned everything off. Checked fuel petcock again! Tried to start it, finally gave it choke, and voila it started. Drove it to gas station and filled up and it took only 18.3 litres or at least 4 litres or close to 1 gallon of fuel left. No idea what caused this, but I did notice my radio/Cb unit was giving me trouble about the same time. This is an intermittent problem, and have found that if I shut the bike off (turn key off for about 20 sec) and restart that the radio/db unit will start working again. Again I have no idea if they are related but it did happen about the same time. Incidentally, I left the fuel on 'res' and really stepped up the speed with a bit of head/side wind. Fuel light came on this time at 230 km (big difference) but I did not run out of gas after putting about 25 km extra. Go figure. Hopefully, someone will come up with a fix for this problem.
  19. Sometimes when the road gets hollowed out by big rigs you will get this funny handling feeling. Basically the tires want to stay in the hollow or lower portion of the road, and resists attempts to get it to climb the side of the dip.
  20. Try Leonna Boyd or Oscar Lopez also.
  21. Huh? Sorry, but what do you need the crush washers for on your rear end? Oops, that don't sound right either. Where do you use crush washers?
  22. Congrats! You will love your new ride..as I am sure after 300 miles you already know.
  23. Kitesquid, Just ordered my Moly60 today, and I leave for about a week trip or so. When i get back I will pull pumkin and grease splines (at BOTH ends right?). I will post my impressions here as to difference in the sound.
  24. My lift is a 'home-made' job from plans I bought through the internet. It is much the same as the lifts sold by Canadian Tire etc. However to fit the Royal Star I added 4 U shaped rests with rubber in the bottom of the U. I slide the jack in from the right side, and align these 4 U shaped rests so that they lift on the frame. As I jack up, the bike comes off the side rest and sits on these 4 U shaped rests. Took some pics and I hope they show up good enough. If not, email me and I will send large pics to you.
  25. Just talked to my local Yamaha dealer (who by the way is an implement dealer and just recently got the Yamaha also) about this today. He was not even sure if there was a 5 year warrenty. He listened to me, and then called Yamaha. Later, he returned my call and Yamaha says 'yes this is a 5 year warrenty' but we usually cover the 'I' basket change for the original owner. Of course I said BS...a 5 year warrenty is 5 years, no matter who the owner is. Basically if the local guy tells Yamaha this bike makes excessive noise, then I guess they will replace it with the 'I' basket. However, that is it. If I don't like it, then too bad...they will not switch back to old one. Kinda tough to decide. What if it actually gets worse? I took it for another spin today with a 3/4 helmet and ear plugs. Great ride! I should try the headsets and foam plugs. If I can still hear the tunes/CB then maybe that it the way to go and just forget the 'chrip'.
