Last night, on my way home from work, a young lady on a cell phone pulled out beside me and sideswiped my 89 Royale. Fortunately the gear all worked flawlessly and I got away with some aches and pains. Here is the part I want to share with you all: I was on a boulevard (center divider) with 2 lanes both directions. I was in the left lane and the young lady was coming from the left on a merge across the boulevard. She was at a stop sign, lost, on the cell phone trying to get directions and decided to go just as I came beside her. We were the only cars in the vicinity. Now, why would I be in the left lane with a car merging from the left with the right lane wide open? Because I was distracted. My head was elsewhere. Now, she shouldn't have pulled out into me like that but if I'd been in the right lane (where a smart biker would have been in that situation) this wreck would not have happened. I wouldn't have the bruises, the Venture wouldn't be significantly damaged and the young lady's prom night would not have been spoiled. I hope I never forget the lesson and I wanted to post it to remind all my friends here to stay sharp!

Carlos, This evening I had a young lady with a car and cell phone decide she needed the space my Venture was occupying. I'm expecting to be rather sore in the AM. What say we try for another time? Carl

Weak stator output?
MiCarl replied to shadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
According to the book you should check voltage at 2000rpm (with a good, charged battery of course). If you get 14-15 volts you're ok (I'd check with the driving lights off). The only test the book has for the stator is for shorts or opens. The resistance between any 2 leads should be .36-.48 ohms at 68F. While the book doesn't have a short to ground test, I'd measure each white lead to ground and make sure there was no continuity. The book does not list a stator AC voltage spec. AC voltage though should be measured lead-lead, not lead to ground. -
Question re: Progressive Rear Shock
MiCarl replied to Skid's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 89 came with a progressive suspension sticker and the CLASS system still functions, so I don't think it's a progressive rear shock. I believe it has their springs front and rear because I run no air pressure in the front and override the rear below L when riding solo (240lbs +) because it's too stiff if I don't. 2 up (at least 400lbs) I run the rear on M and the front on L. It also sits about 1" higher than stock. I don't have any of the suspension complaints I hear from 1st gen riders with stock springs. So, based on what I think I have, I highly recommend use their spring on your stock shock.- 12 replies

I'm going to mount a GPS NAV system on my 89 and think it would be great to tie it's audio output into the intercom system so the NAV will interrupt the radio when it talks. Now, the audio output on the unit is enough to drive headphones so I bet it's way too much signal to tie directly into the MIC input on the amp. Anyone got any suggestions on how to properly make this connection?

cheapcycleparts.com has it for $45.23. I rarely find parts cheaper elsewhere. Tricky part with them is their new website doesn't have fiches for older bikes. You need to look up your part numbers on the Yamaha web site then enter them in the quick order form. Now for the bad news - If you're looking for the piece that carries the CB and CLASS in a MKII you need part number 59J-28221-00-00 PANEL, TERMINAL2 $120.47

I recently replaced mine. They are still available if you're willing to part with the $$.

So long as it's not deeper than the sipes I wouldn't worry about it.

drive shaft across first gen years ?
MiCarl replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The shaft was the same for the 83-85 Ventures. It is different on the MKII bikes and does not seem to have been used on any other model. -
I have one. Frankly my old method works just as well: Get an old car or light truck wheel (I had a light truck wheel). Put it on a bench with the deep end up. Slit a piece of fuel line and place it over the wheel edge to protect your wheel. Drill a hole through the bench in the center of the wheel. Set your wheel and tire on top of the car wheel - the depth of the wheel protects your brake disc. Now put a piece of threaded rod down through everything with a washer and nut on both ends. Now your wheel is firmly held to the bench. You can add a lever attached to the wall with a foot to break the bead. I used a porta-power to the ceiling joists. Clamps or even a hammer should also do the trick. Now tackle it with tire irons and some soapy water. Whole set up should run you less than 20 bucks (I got my wheel from the dumpster behind a tire store). I was using a 16" truck rim. Probably too big for a 2nd gen rear. Probably want to find a 13 or 14" rim.

Counterclockwise from off there are 2 positions - LOCK locks the steering - P(ark) locks the steering and turns on the running lights. Go one less click and the lights won't come on.

Rear Brake Problem
MiCarl replied to ActionJax's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you've got the air out it really shouldn't "spit bubbles" when you push the pedal. You are closing the bleed screw before you disconnect the mity vac? If you pump the pedal (bleed screws closed) will it build up any pressure? Was the reservoir full when you first opened it? If so, I suspect you need to rebuild the master cylinder (pump). -
I take it that that takes ones mind off the lightning.

1st gen radio information
MiCarl replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Tim, I just checked this out Friday. Looking at the DIN connector on the CB- The pin just counter clockwise from the keyway goes +5.75V when either the PTT is pushed or the CB receives a broadcast (signal strength exceeds the squelch setting). I have verified that the +5.75 signal from this pin mutes the music. Actually, what I believe actually happens is that that signal switches the input on the amp to the CB.- 76 replies

Sidewall Cracking on One side of Avon Venom-X
MiCarl replied to LilBeaver's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
How come a tire that old only has 1000 miles on it? Did the dealer put on old tires or did the previous owner have it sitting around on the bike for years? If the PO had the tire on the motorcycle from shortly after it was manufactured the right of the front was probably facing right into the sun where he parked it. If the dealer installed old tires that one was probably by a window or the furnace.- 39 replies

I used to sell Sirius radios. Every single one of them had a choice in the set up menu to adjust the output level. Every one of them needed to be cranked up to sound good with the amps we had them hooked up to in the store. I wouldn't be surprised if the XM radios are the same. I'm not a big fan of FM modulators. If the 2nd gen as an aux port in the audio system I'd hook the XM into that.

anyone know how the CB cuts the radio off?
MiCarl replied to justfun1's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
The link you posted refers to the intercom connection. I dabbled with my CB a bit this afternoon. The amp deselects the radio when: 1 - the CB receives a broadcast. 2 - the PTT button on the handlebar is pushed. Disconnecting the DIN cable from the back of the CB causes the amp to happily continue putting the radio through the speakers even if the PTT button is pressed or the CB receives a broadcast. Conclusion - the CB does indeed send a signal over the DIN cable to the amp causing it to switch it's input to the CB. Monitoring the center pin on the CB shows no voltage to ground either with the CB not receiving, the CB transmitting or the CB receiving. But hey! What's the point of having an extra CB if you can't run tests on it! Turns out when the CB is receiving or transmitting it puts +6V on the pin next to the keyway in a counter clockwise direction. On the cable it will be the 1st pin clockwise from the keyway. -
Clutch slips when engine hot
MiCarl replied to motorbiketim's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Heat will cause the fluid to expand. Most of the expansion is in the clutch slave cylinder which is bolted up to the side of the engine and gets good and hot. That's what the little tiny hole in the bottom of the master cylinder is for - to let fluid back out of the slave and lines and into the reservoir. That little hole needs to be unobstructed and there needs to be room in the master cylinder for the fluid. Clutches are a bit different than brakes. As the clutch wears the fluid in the reservoir will rise, which is the opposite of brakes. On the clutch you want to be above the minimum level but not clear to the top. -
At idle I can see the turn signal move my meter big time, especially with the brake on. Last year I went through the whole charging system and replaced the battery so I'm confident this is normal.

86 & up final gear drive
MiCarl replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The one on the wheel you can change without a problem. The one on the final drive is part of the ring gear. Change it out and you will need to set the gear lash by measuring and inserting appropriate shims. Not for the faint of heart. We've got another thread going on replacing 1st gen final drives with a 2nd gen drive. That's what I ended up doing on my 89 when the pinion gear broke. I'd start looking for someone that triked a 2nd gen and wants the final drive out from under foot. Having said all that, you are welcome to my busted 89. The ring gear is good. You pay shipping. Oh, the bearings are shot too, so you would need to disassemble the gear from the plate and install a new bearing. -
Dual air horns, although I haven't done much night riding since I added the fog and driving lights so it could change.....
