Go for it! Add chrome! Ride it til the wheels fall off. Go visit places that you went before and enjoy the memories. Visit new places and meet new friends. I love the black cherry color, it reminds me of my old Gold Wing. Looks fantastic in the light. Oh, as the old body gets on just remember Lowell. He is my hero! What is he 68 or 69 and riding to Daytona and any other place he feels like. We are only as old as we let ourself be. Take care JB

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I can remember picking up Easyriders just to see his artwork. He had a way of evoking the feeling for the open road that is timeless. Just for the record, he passed away on Sept. 11, 2004. JB

I dont think the Wilson is any better than the Firestick. They are both the thin fiberglass types. Both have a tip adjuster for SWR. I haven't had a bit of wind problem yet. I think the thin tapered fiberglass puts less of a load on the mount than the original center load whip. THe bulk of the weight is lower. Think of hanging three golf balls on the tip of a fishing pole and swinging it around. I will put a hole or antenna sleeve on a cover. I don't care for the folding antenna sleeves. The 3 foot whip works great. The amplified am/fm seems to work pretty good. It faded out in hill country but I would say that it was more the terrain than anything else. JB

Hi Gunny, I am coming your wat for the Dallas swap meet the weekend of the 14th. If you dont have it fixed by then I will give you a hand. Do you still have a single antenna? By then you should have those mufflers ready to show off. I am going to be looking for a new riding jacket. JB

Thanks to all the guys my daughter and I had a fantastic day. She came back home ready for the next adventure. We covered 210 miles with 168 of it on the ride. I hope I got the bucket link correct. Great weather and company. We are getting ready for the next run on the 29th of March. Julia says the old guy on the big green machine has to make it if he can. Photobucket link to ride pictures ---- http://s258.photobucket.com/albums/hh269/lonestarmedic/ Lonestar Medic Pink Dragonfly (Tom-you know how she picked this handle!!!)

Tom- Maggie was looking at your visited states map and wants to know whats up with Idaho? Wanted by the law, got ex's, in-laws, outlaws, or just plain hate states named for 'taters? Had a great time Sat. I am working on the pictures. Julia will have you a CD next time we meet. JB

Sanding, prepping, cleaning and using a good primer-sealer are the keys to a paint job. You can get acceptable results with a rattle can. Use a handle and light coats. Overlap and don't get in a hurry. Or, remove the plastics, do all the prep work and then find a part time painter to shoot the color coat. JB

1st Gen Driving Lights
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Squidley- When I get home I will check. I think I found the larger lights for under $50.00 a set. Also, hold onto another set of brackets. I will send you a paypal for them. I intend to purchase a second set of everything and box it all up. You know how BMD is (multiple bike disease). Now, I need to find a good set of horns to finish that area off. JB -
I agree with you on the liquid tape. I have been waiting to see if I need any changes before sealing stuff up. I will probably loosen up the panel and make a form around the bottom then use an RTV or other type of potting compund. As to the markings, I have a laminated card set up to put in the trunk area. Good ideas. I do expect this repair to last a long time. JB

As part of the upgrades on Mocha I decided to replace the CB antenna and split the Stero onto its own system. I used a 3ft Wilson black fiberglass whip. It is tipe tuneable and thin like the Firestick II. The mount is a Wilson H.D. version. It has a large allen bolt that runs up from the bottom to the base. I used a 90 degree coax adapter to put the cable along the factory arm. The cable was about 8ft. I loope the excess under the seat and tied it to the frame. I made sure not to form coils in the excess by looping in a figure 8. This keeps from inducing a magnetic field that might affect the signal. I had to also use a 90 deg. adapter under the CB. This allowed enough clearance for installation. The AM/FM antenna is now an amplified block style mounted inside the fairing just below the LH turn signal. It is very similar to the Dakota Digital model but I got it from Ebay for $25.00. The power draw is probably less than 1/4 amp. I grabbed power from the accessory fuse. The antenna matched out at 1.5:1 SWR on channels 1 and 40. I dont think I will get much better considering the ground plane of the bike. The amplified antenna seemed to be ok before the tuner crapped out. I will edit the post after a replacement tuner is installed. JB

After finding the glass fuses falling out because the spring clips were brittle and snapping apart I decided to do an upgrade. I purchased a small fuseblock off of Ebay and set to work. I mounted the panel on the airbox cover. The fuse wiring was lengthened to form a harness. he harness is long enough that the cover can be removed and the air filter serviced without removing the fusebox. I used 90 deg/ terminals on the blade connectors to keep the finished profile narrow. The original main fuse has been replaced with a 40 amp Maxi-fuse and holder. All connections were crimped in and touched with a bit of solder. I also installed 4 gauge battery cables. The plug-in ground and main fuse got moved to the top of the battery. The extra fuse at the top of the panel is for the new driving lights. End result I feel came out excellent. I now find minimal voltage drops, and the bike starts easily both cold and hot. Total expenditure on this project was about $75.00. Labor was probably around 40-50 man hours. I chased all connectors and spent time cleaning and greasing terminals. I cleaned all terminals with CLR and then flushed with water. The grease is NYK corrosion preventative compound. Pictures attached of fuses and wiring. Notes: The Bosch fuse and wiring on the LH fairing are for the driving lights. The plug next to the fuel fill is for the battery tender. It is accessible from the fuel door without pulling any panels. JB

Well, I finally finished my driving lights. I used the brackets from here, the Optronics lights from Wal-Mart and stuff from the electrical box. I replaced the light hardware with stainless steel 1/4" allen bolts. The cross bolt is 1 1/4" and the vertical bolt is 3/4". I used S/S washers and acorn nuts. The hardware was about $8.00. The 1/4" bolts actually thread into the metric holes. It is tight but they run in with a wrench. Gives them a safety retainer feature. I retained the light bezel with a #4 S/S screw and some blue locktite on the screw. The switch operates the ground side of the relay. The 12VDC side of the relay coil is supplied by the accessory fuse. The main power comes from the battery via a 15amp fuse. This shuts the lights off when the bike is turned off, preventing accidental battery drain. The relay is mounted on the bolt that retains the noise filter. As set, each light is drawing 4.3 amps. The system seems to be doing ok. Voltage is remaining above 13.5 at idle. Runs up to about 13.8 at 2K. Without lights on I am showing about 14.1 at idle and 14.6 at 2K. The MR16 bulbs are 55 watt and appear to be a narrow flood pattern. I may change to a narrow spot later. Initial impression is good. A lot of light and the roadside is illuminated well. Total cost for the job including lights is about $45.00. This is figuring in a mil-spec waterproof switch with rubber toggle boot. Pictures attached showing screw, hardware, and finished product. JB

1st Gen Radio help
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I called Pinwall up in Ohio and bought a good used set for $90.00. Hopefully this does the trick. I chased every wire and connector and found no problems. I pulled the units and laid them on the bench and opened them up. The foam on the inside is deteriorated but the components look good. It has to be on for about 5 minutes before the tuner cuts out. The noise level doesn't drop so the amp is ok. I found a loose connector on the CB. It now plays through the speakers. Whe I have time I will see if I can chase the problem on the tuner board. I am working on a bench setup to test this stuff. With riding season on it will be a back burner project. I will talk to MasterGuns on his setup. I will try and use it for testing. At least then we can get a tech article started on the 1st Gen. radios. Maybe I can figure out a way to do a few repairs. JB -
Fix for broken tab on side panel

Hey Gunny When we get together I will show you the ball end stud that was sent to me for repairing a missing mount. It works fantastic. I am waiting for a few of them to show up from McMaster Carr. Oh, I will call you on the radio and the ride tomorrow nite. I am setting the map now. Nice job on the machine screw Boomer, good way to save the original mount.. JB -
Hey Freebird, The movie was Wildcats. I think Wesley Snipes is in it also. Yes the bike is a Venture Royale 1st Generation Mark 1. Maggie spotted it about a month ago when it was on. JB

1st Gen Radio help
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I checked all the wires and connectors. Very clean and tight. Used som CRC Electronic cleaner on eac to be sure. Pulled the fron and rear control cables. No difference. Checked cassette cable-seems good. Pulled CB and plugged harness into bottom. CB now comes through the upper speakers-------DUHH!! Did not help the radio. CB is now matched to antenna. New Wilson antenna working good. Remember I separated the antenna. I am now going to check the radio and amplifier for problems. It did it again on the clear then gone action. So I figure it cooled off and then worked. Thanks for the tips on all the cables. I twisted and yanked then connected and disconnected at all spots. Will report back later. Gotta finish the Saturday ride map and clean up the tools. JB -
Well, it appears that either my amp or tuner has coughed its guts. It was working ok. Then, the tuner started throwing feedback noise and not picking up stations. Figured it was the antenna. Installed a new antenna and thought all was great. Then it did it again. Went from great radio to nothing but noise. When the radio and intercom are off I can hear a small bit of white noise from the speakers. Also, I do not hear the CB through the dash speakers when I turn the squelch off. I see RX on the CB screen. I think one unit or the other is getting warmed up then cutting out. I don't have headsets yet. So, don't know if the intercom is working. All buttons except AM/FM work. That one is stuck in FM. I cleaned the upper display by taking it apart and using a good contact cleaner. I have to Ohm out the buttons yet. So, any suggestions would be helpful. Pinwall Cycle has the amp and tuner off of a working bike for $45.00 each and shipping. Figure I have to split the LH fairing to get to the radio. JB

This stuff works. However, it does generate heat during the process. Also, most emergency rooms don't understand it well. Once used, it will have to be flushed out of the wound in order to complete the repairs. It is available in a baggie kinda like a large pouch of dip. Also comes in a long strip that can be packed into a wound. I carry a couple kinds in my crash kit. Our army medics have it. JB

Fix that dog-gone thing already!!! Do I have to add that to the list of repairs? Anyway, If Rattlesnake comes by I may have his laptop done by then. Thanks for the good wishes. Hoping to make this a great time. Maggie and I are talking about a Refugio run the weekend after that. Want to go see the house and maybe go down to San Antonio Bay. JB

Tom, I hope you and Debbie had a fantastic day. Julia (my daughter) and I had our first ride together. Had a load of fun. Ain't nothing like a tank of fuel to get rid of stress. JB

Hey everyone, I took my daughter Julia for he first ride on Mocha tonight!!!! She is now officially hooked on Ventures. I want to arrange a ride next Saturday to hill country with her. After the divorce garbage this is a milestone for us. BillP, BuddyRich, JRichard and any one else lets make this a day for her to remember. I want mild twisties, sightseeing, lunch, and lots of time for pictures and memories. I am thinking breakfast and then off for the day. I would like to be home just after dark.I hope y'all understand what this can mean to her. Her mom has always told her NO. Don't try anything new, dont risk yourself and don't go off on your own. She needs to become her own person and learn to meet people and enjoy what life has to offer. JB

I worked with these all the time for the fire department. They are usually marked as a 795V or 795H. It depends on the mounting direction. The interior filament is oriented to the installation. These bulbs pull 35-50 watts each. Watch putting them behind plastic lenses! You can order them from most of the mail order lightbar places such as Gall's Inc. They are bright! But, I would not put them into anthing that has a steady burn behind a plastic lens not made for them. JB

Broken first gen, accident pics

Go look on cycle trader. There were 2 salvage bikes. I recall one being good cosmetically but of unknow mechanical. Might be a cheaper way to go. It has been a while so might be gone. JB PS - Glad to see you are a surfing survivor.
