  1. I have followed his career sporadically for years. Amazing man with a bit of luck thrown in for good measure. Eventually cancer may be curable because of him. JB
  2. Not a parts bike Todd. Just an idea because of a bike up near Houston. Good shape but missing all the lowers. Haven't bought it. However I am starting our cache of 1st Gen parts. Bought some boxes of electrical and a big box of hardware cheap. Also checking out a wrecked 1986 for possible purchase.
  3. Hi folks - as I finish up Mocha and her winter maintenance I have come across another 1st Gen. It is a 1989 blue on blue royale. Nice bike but it is mising the lower fairings. Needs Right and Left lowers, front cross bar, and the lower scoop. It has 35K on it and appears good otherwise. Any ideas on the lower parts? Guess I could scour e-bay and hope. Lonestarmedic JB
  4. Well, here are the pics of the fire. Not much left and a lot of damage to clean up. However, the family is ok, vehicles are good, and bikes are just a bit dirty. A great loss for Ron and his family. However, he has a positive attitude and will come out on top. JB
  5. Here's the outside of the house. This place has potential to be fantastic!! Nice lot with trees, big backyard with a brick patio, and room for a garage. The windows and front rooms are fantastic. Hardwood floors in great shape. JB
  6. Hi everyone Finally got a break from everything to downsize pictures from Rattlesnakes place. This is the house he needs to repair. Not sure how his schedule is going for everything. The kitchen is the main thrust. It needs some cabinets, counters wiring etc. The rest needs paint, sanding and paper. I'm sure that Ron and JT will be able to let us know more. The cabinets and counters shown fit on either side of the doorway. They can be refinished and new tops installed. A sink and plumbing would finish it off.
  7. Hi All, I got back from Snake's place last night. He and the family are doing ok. We looked at his 2nd house. Old Victorian 2 story. It has been vacant for several years before he got it. Structurally sound and has the potential to be a showplace. Needs the kitchen put in and bathroom redone. Also paint, plaster, and scraping. Mainly a good dose of TLC. He is going to clean out the place so there is room to work. For the time being they have a furnished place to stay. So, when he gets the place open, we need to have a repair party!! There are neighbors, Patriot Guard, and folks from the F.D. he belongs to willing to help also. Best thing now is to let Snake and the lawyers work on the place that burnt down. Hopefully this gives him seed money for the other place. I will go back down in a few weeks and check on progress. Snake says hi and bless everyone for their prayers and wishes. He won't be on for a while as he lost his new laptop. I am trying to salvage his files and pics off of it. It to a good firehose hit! I will post some picture this evening. J.B.
  8. I am talking to Rattlesnake. He has a victorian house that needs help to be liveable. The kitchen needs rebuilt. He can't hammer a nail straight to save himself. Y'all here in Texas give me a shout. He has been given a doublewide furnished for now. Anyone up for a roadtrip and a eyeball in the A.M. jb@txfire.org 210-373-7333 Figure he could use the support while he goes through the debris. He lost his computers and all household stuff. Vehicles are ok. Kids need some clothing and I think Snake needs a boost. J.B.
  9. Hi everyone, A bit of a query. I have noticed several parts ads going back to 2006. I even e-mailed one of them last month. There was no answer. If the parts aren't available or the owner isn't around anymore ca these ads be removed or archived? I do understand if the items are still available. Put up a revision or an update so we know the stuff is current. Thanks for taking time to read this. J.B.
  10. Glad y'all are ok. Sorry we didn't get to meet you. Guess that will be something to look forward to in 2008. Let us know if we can help. JB
  11. Excel will export .csv files. I will look tomorrow at the website. Should be easy. JB
  12. Hi Randy - I recently put 4 gauge welding cables on my 1st Gen. I think it made a difference. As I work on the bike, I will put an amp gauge on and check starter draw. Although the compression isn't as high as a V-twin, we are cranking over 1300cc, the transmission, and whatever oil might be in the system. I think the Odyssey has built a reutation for reliability. I am sure other batteries perform just as well. JB
  13. Thanks for the hint guys I forgot that these things are a stator/rectifier system. I will chase down the system checks. I was planning on an upgraded stator and rectifier in the next couple months. Might be sooner than later. Todd, I will get the brand name. It had a loose positive terminal. It was pushed down into the case about a quarter inch. We suspect that it had some transport damage. Other than that good to go. Off with the rockers and replace the gaskets. I will try to record the progress on this so others can have a pictorial guide. J.B.
  14. Well, George the Christmas tree is outside and the ornaments packed away. My daughter named the tree, her first live tree. Always had fakes because the ex hated the needles and claimed to be allergic. The first things on the tree were new ornaments purchased by daughter, Maggie, and I. We each picked out an ornament that seemed to best represent ourselves. Daughter - a penguin. Maggie-an angel. Myself - I simply hung a certain pewter bell. It represented to me the start of a new chapter in my life. So, thanks to all of you here for being a part of it. JB P.S. - last nights VR chat was a blast. We now have candles for guests that are both unique and aromatic!!
  15. I looked at the Odyssey 680. You don't need the MJ model. That adds weight and expense for a metal jacket. On the 1st Gen it is about 1/2" taller and about the same narrower. I see the cold crank and amp-hour ratings also. I picked up an AGM battery with 24 amp-hours and 350 cca. The first one was defective. The second one cranks up a storm. I may get an Odyssey and put it in storage for later. The main draw is the length of service life and the construction. As to the cranking, I will have to get with another 1st Gen owner and compare amp draw and voltage drop. I got my AGM at Batteries Plus. Cost was $86 plus tax. I also put on an automatic 3/4 amp battery tender. My opinion is that the cables are too light for the application. 150-200 amps through the stock wires just don't sit right with me. In a perfect clean conection world probably ok. JB
  16. Well, yesterday I decided to take my new battery back to the store. It was pulling down to 7 volts during the initial starter inrush. It tested well on a load until the store turned it up to about 175 amp load. Then it fell flat on its face. Got another battery and gave it a 6-8 hour charge. Stuffed it in Mocha and hit the starter. WOW- starter has so much speed and torque I thought it was a different bike! BAD NEW BATTERY. Now I have a new fuse panel, new wiring, new master fuses, new 4GA battery cables, new grounds and a happy grin. I even put in an extra circuit from the battery to a relay for driving lights. The system holds 14.4 at idle, 14.6 at 2K and above. When I step on the rear brake it goes to 14.8 for a moment. Must be the anti-dive and the rear brake lights. Thanks to all who gave suggestions and told their tales of electrical woe. It all helped. I will take pictures of the problem areas I found and my cables and fusebox for our archives. Happy New Year JB and the now well charged Mocha
  17. I reckon I'll stop by and represent the Republic of Texas. We will be up for a while tonight. Since you're bringing the whip, I'll bring the velvet rope and the feathers . Happy New Year. J. B.
  18. Go buy a copy of XP. Boot from the install disk. Choose the option to format the drive. Choose the full not quick format. Then create partitions as you want. I usually suggest 2 partitions on drives over 80gb. That way you can store data on the 2nd partition area and work on the primary partition without disturbing the data. XP will install generic drivers for most of your hardware allowing you to at least boot up. However, your best bet is to find and download the drivers you need beforehand. Burn them to a disk. Good luck. It is not as hard as it seems. Just write down what you need and then keep a record as you go. J.B.
  19. I used to service the Kerosun brand heaters. We found that for the most part a full container doesn't seem to draw much moisture. Especially if it is really water clear K-1. Your wick will need several maintenance steps to keep it performing correctly. Make sure to soak the new wick before lighting. Fill the tank and lower the wick and let it set for an hour or so. 1) Make sure to install it straight on the holder. 2) Run the heater dry outside every 3-5 tanks. 3) Use a toothbrush on the wick to remove the residue and refluff. 4) Soak the wick for a good hour or so after refilling tank. We found that most problems were due to unseated burners, dirty wicks, and badly installed wicks. Also, before you light the unit check the tipover safety. Then take it outside, light it, and jar it to check the safety for complete extinguishment. If the heater doesn't have a safety-DESTROY IT!!!!! I have probably put out a dozen or so fires started by bad heaters. Last statement from my soapbox. Never refill a hot heater. As I recall, the last instance of this cooked a 2 car garage, a new Oldsmobile, did about 10K in smoke damage, and put the family into a motel for a couple weeks. Be safe as you stay warm J.B.
  20. Thanks for the chart on the amps. It's amazing how Ohms Laws work. I sure wouldn't put 60 amps on a 12 ga. run over more than about 5-6 feet. Leaves no room for any kind of inductive load rush. Of course, I worked on fire trucks for years so we always went far above minimum on everything. J.B.
  21. Momma says that I should keep the aftershave a secet. But............... It is the same thing my father wore. Original Old Spice. It seems to suite me. Still comes in the white ceramic bottle with a stopper. All I can say is it trips Mamma's trigger:smile5:. Can't wait to get Mocha back together. Then we can find a good halfway point for biscuits and gravy and suicide breakfast sandwiches. J.B.
  22. Thanks all for the answers. I expected that main fuse meant all. I was thinking about the higher performance stator which is rated about 25% over stock. I think the 12 ga. wire is marginal for carrying the total bike output plus a set of driving lights and a couple of electronics. A pair of 55watt lights draws about 8-10 amps. In theory the 12ga should ok for about 40 amps depending on distance and resistance. I will inspect the ends and check connections. See if there is a resistance over the wire. Can't wait to see how the starter works with real wiring. J.B.
  23. Hi and Merry Christmas to all, Things have been hectic the last few weeks. I tore into Mocha and got lots of parts. Just now getting around to the work. The base is on Exodus until Jan 4th so I can take some time and work (or play!). Finished the fuse holder replacement tonight. Took too many cold meds and couldn't sleep so I went to the garage and worked. The original holder clips for the fuses were so brittle that they cracked when I pulled them out. Replaced it with a small 6 gang ATC holder. Then I decided to get rid of the OEM main fuse. Put in a Maxifuse holder. Tomorrow is battery cables. I have a large supply of 4ga. welding cable and all of the terminals already. They have to make a difference. The OEM cables are WIMPY. Quick question on the main fuse. It is about a 12ga. wire into the harness. Does that really carry the entire load of the electrical system? If so, before I put in a larger stator I think perhaps a new wire might be in order. Hey Todd - found why neutral was hard to hit! The bellcrank is loose on the shift shaft splines. Hopefully it isn't worn to the point I can't get it tight. I did a bit of soldering this weekend so I will drop your connector in the mail right after the holidays. I picked up 6 of the sockets. They were less than 2 bucks apiece. Safe and happy holidays to all. J.B.
  24. Bells arrived here. Great looking job. I can't thank you enough for the effort Don. One is now a permanent Christmas ornament. Sounds very sweet. J. B.
  25. Ok Hipshot - I looked up Telferner. Not far from me at all. A spot of joy on the map named for an Italian guy. Population of 700 in 2000. So, watch out, when Mocha is back on her wheels I WILL come and park in your drive and make the neighbors cringe. Seriously though, this website is a lot of fun. Even for an eating club with a riding disorder. J.B.
