Pics as promissed
lonestarmedic replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I looked at a bunch of 1st Gens. before I got Mocha. I saw 3 in the black/grey. All were 1991-1992. They were all original paint. You got a real winner there. Elbow grease and wax will make it shine. The floorboards are Ventureline. Last set on E-bay went for almost $500.00. I want a set but not THAT bad!!. Looking forward to the before and after pictures. J.B. -
A great Dare Devil lost his life.................

I for one will miss him. Hope he slides sideways into the pearly gates yelling whatta ride!!! -
Hey Vipermax07 Thanks for the hints. The bike is charging ok while running. I am using rol-loc disks and believe it or not, I use CLR to soak off corrosion. I spray or dip the connectors and then rinse with water and dry. Put some dielectric grease on and things are ready for power!! Strange, but the stuff will clean down to bright copper and doesn't hurt the connector bodies. I wouldn't try getting it on paint though. I believe that there are a few of those gremlins in the garage. Anyone got Gremlin-Be-Gone spray? J. B.

Hey Squeeze I didn't get a chance to check the voltage before trying to turn it over. I had put her on a trickle charger early that morning, and went to start it about 8 hours later. The trickle was showing charged but no start and slow turn over. I got my larger charger and ran it for a while then started it. So far, after charging the battery and then removing it from the bike to start repairs the battery is at 12.5 after sitting for the last couple days. After I repair the fuse blocks, I will do a few more tests. Too many variables at the moment. Remember that a loose connection to the gauge cluster occurred last weekend. So, I have loose fuses, a bad connection, and a new battery all at once. J. B.

No, Tom San Antonio is now a densely populated suburb of Mexico!! And y'all better watch it, I here they are looking to annex Blanco, Bulverde, and Kerrville next.:stirthepot::whistling: On a more serious note, as soon as Mocha is back on line we need to plan a San Antonio meeting for our eating club with a riding disorder! Well, couldn't find a specific drain on the electrical system. Ordered a new fuseblock and will start there. Grounds look good and clean. Stator will get checked next. Haven't ruled out the possiblity of a "bad" new battery. Also replacing the stock main fuse with one of the new style maxi-fuses. I plan on extending the stock wires in order to mount the block on the air filter housing. I will probably make new battery cables at the same time. Next will be pulling the starter and cleaning the dust out and checking the armature and brushes. Results from draw test: Key off, between batt. and ground 0.8mA Key off, between batt. and positive 0.8mA Pulled the b.up 5 amp fuse and dropped 0.4mA In acc pos. draw was 187mA I have one fuse to chase yet. It is 20 amp in a rubber holder forward of the battery. Has about an 8ga. wire feeding a 12ga. wire. Both are red and it is configured in a loop. Final jobs before puting the plastic on: Plugs, wires, plug caps, and valve cover gaskets and grommets. Glad I enjoy tinkering with stuff. Weather is a bit chilly at 45 and raining, so I hope to be done in a couple weeks. Had a good experience with Kent Powersports here in San Antonio. They gave me 20% off on parts and ordered all the items not in stock today. They also offered to work prices on other items and parts. Very pleasant to work with. So, I will get most of my stuff local. Except for the plugs, caps and wires. I will order those elsewhere. Kent only offered Yamaha parts here. J.B.

Anybody in our group an auto parts dealer?
lonestarmedic replied to Mikealiasmike's topic in Watering Hole
No problem, I knew I kept all that stuff for a reason. I even kept my old Corvette parts books. 1953-1992 or 3. Always figured that the stuff might come in handy. I have a great deal of electrical cross reference. Go figure, I managed the parts room for a major rebuilder and electrical distributor. J.B. -

Worked for a dealer and an A/C Delco distributor for years. I have some ancient delco cross-reference guides. I even have Prestolite and Wico magneto books!! Send the numbers and I will see if there are any hits. J. B. -
Jeff- The battery is new and has a good charge. Volt drop on start is ok. Trunk light is disconnected. Didn't know radio had keep alive. I am going to hook an ammeter across and give it a check tonight. Figure to pull fuses and watch the meter. I saw the fuseblock at Buckeye. I am ordering one tonight. If I lengthen the wires I can place it on top of the air cleaner lid. Figure to solder an extension harness and run it along side the battery. Haven't inspected the small ATC fuse block behind the battery yet. Also suppose I need to chase down the master fuse and check for the usual corrosion and breaks. The gauge cluster going off and on may give me a place to start. Thanks for the hint on the amp and trunk light. J. B.

Muffinman - the bike arrived to me with a resistor instead of a battery sensor. The resistor is connected to the top screw in the fusebox. I believe this is the accessory screw. Should be off when key is off. I agree that the stock fuse panel is not good. Cover is warped and the fuse holders seem to be loose. I will be examining an alternative. I did see an ATC holder someplace that would fit. However it needed to be put on the air cleaner due to heighth. J. B.

Ok - next projects. I need to chase down 2 electrical items. One looks straight forward. I have a bad connection between the fuse panel and the gauge cluster. Wiggle the fusebox and the computer monitor and the tach. go in and out. Number 2 is a parasitic drain on the battery. I charged the new battery on a slow charge. Checked the status and all good. I then turned off the bike and didn't do anything except turn it on to accessory 4 times in 2 days long enough to check the PSI in the front shocks. Maybe 30 seconds each time. Today I had to give her a boost. Last on my list looks to be cleaning the gas tank. Turned from reserve to on the other day. After jumping today, cranked several times with no vroom. Turned the tank to reserve and she fired up after 3 stabs of the starter. J. B.

Ok folks, Mocha needs cover gaskets, grommets, plugs, wires, and a couple other odds and ends. Who do y'all like to deal with? I checked my local dealer's website and they show all parts at list price. A place in Seattle came up at 25% off. I don't mind paying to purchase local, but Kent Powersports (Yamaha of San Antonio) will cost a lot more. J. B.

I just picked up 3 bells. One is for 86er as a token of appreciation for his hospitality. The other 2 I would be happy to give or exchange. Don't care if I end up with 3 in return. All I need is one. J. B.

Good evening, I just sent you a paypal for 3 bells. My e-mail, address, and phone number are in the message. Thanks for doing this. Hopefully the little critters will stay away from our scoots. J. B.

I have noticed that driver floorboards seem to be rare. I have seen a couple bikes with them on. Every set on e-bay seems to go quick and high. What's up with this. I am not really wanting heel-to shifting, just the bit of room that the boards offer. J. B.

Not to sure about the various combinations. I have seen gold, the brown I have, and a darker brown. Can't figure out the official color names. Oh, mama like the mocha name. My daughter says that her proper name is Vivian Venture. She says it makes her classy. The various browns and golds did seem to be popular. Also the two-tone blue throughout the years. 86er has the same gold as mine and the contrast color is black. The 87 I looked at had the same gold and then a creme white. J. B.

Hah- Once I hit Dallas I knew all I had to do was go south until I smelled it then a bit farther until I rode in it. Anyway, I am glade to be home. I clocked 1853 miles and averaged 41mpg. Cross wind from Dallas to S.A. was rough. I can tell that I need to study the windshield and work on getting the air pocket right. Momma is a half inch taller than me. I think the helmet buffetting will be bad on her. Maybe a bit taller and a recurve would help. I was getting beat pretty bad on the way in. Kinda depends on what is out there. J. B.

Hi all I am safe and sound at home. Trip was great. Got to meet a couple others at the show. Bike is parked in the back of the house on the porch. Ran great the whole time. I will post up a couple ending pictures later. Mama says that since there is another Brown Sugar that Mocha kinda fits this one. She says it is purrrtttyyy. A bit of post trip maintenance and it will be ready for more. J. B.

Hi everyone. I am in Ft. Worth bedded down for the night. The bike has run great both days. Been getting 43mpg today while running 80-85. No leaks, no squeaks, and just a rattle or two. The old girl really runs well. I do see a bit of dampness on the outside of the right carbs. Been there a while. Also, Todd the tick I heard has to be an errant spark at idle. I can correlate the erratic idle to the tick. The Corbin seat and backrest were worth the extra trouble. I believe BlackJack was right. The other bike was just a small stop on the way to getting the bike that was really calling me. See some of you tomorrow at the show. And see the South Texas gang when I get home. I want to plan a meet and eat someplace between all of us in a couple weeks. Notice the two somewhat cold but excellent looking 1st Gens. Wonder who they belong to? J. B.

Great day to ride. I went off the highway at Talledega Forest and rode the bypass. Sorry the tires are a bit thin Todd. Mamma says you are welcome anytime. Anyway, I thought these critters had the air suspension so we could set them on high and get off road clearance. Biscuits and gravy lasted until west of Birmingham then a stop at Cracker Barrel was in order. Going to get supper now. See y'all later. J. B.

So, after a bumpy start Wednesday(battery wouldn't fire the bike up at 36 degrees!!) I was off and running. Ran into construction on 85 South. I actually stopped in traffic and put down the kickstand several times. Got into Atlanta and met 86er and Blackjack for supper. Had a bit of pig and sauce. Then followed 86er home for the nite. Had some bourbon and called it a day. It don't get a whole lot better than that. However, when he tells you home is just across town, it is the route that is fun. Across the dam and through a bunch of mild twisties and hills. Finally got to run the old girl on something besides a highway. Wish it wasn't dark, it would have been pretty. Just don't follow 86er on every turn - some of them might be sidewalks!! (Turn lane disappeared - he didn't actually go off the road, just kinda pointed it that direction. Attached is a pick from the parking lot. J. B.

Well- woke up to a brisk 36 degrees. Will be on the road by 9am. Spotted an Autozone for Sea Foam last night. Should make good time today. Sun will be to my back on 85 South. Outa be a brisk morning. Sun is shining and someplace there is breakfast calling. J.B.

Hi All, By the time I got rolling this morning and got Sea Foam and boots the best I could do was south of Durham. Logged in 402 miles with side trips and everything. Heading for Atlanta and supper with 86er tomorrow. Bike is running good. Locked the cruise to its max and leaned back. Kinda cold and windy but fun. The Corbin seat took a bit to get used to but it is pretty good. Love the backrest!! Put 2 tanks of primium and the Sea Foam through. Idle is still a bit erratic but the off-idle twitch is gone. I saw a 1st Gen heading south earlier. It was loaded in the back of a truck with a boat in tow. Other than that, I only saw 2 Gold Wings. Here are a couple picks. JB

I chose a Scorpion 200. I like the tool less faceshield change and the removeable liner so I can wash it. Fit is a bit tight right now until the cheek pads break in. Price for a Snell/Dot helmet was excellent. I plan on buying the shorter 100 with the flip down eyeshield for my commuter helmet. J. B.

86er It depends on the butt-o-meter. I haven't been on a long haul in about 4-5 years. All my San Antonio riding has been on a buddy's Victory. Love those bikes. I think a Hammer might be might purchase for Friday night outings. I figure Marietta is about 8 hours from here. If Brown Sugar behaves, I will leave here about 9am. Need to stop for Sea Foam someplace. I don't see why we can't have supper together by 6pm. I will give you a call around lunchtime. Thanks for all the support guys. Can't wait for a southern rally. By then Brown Sugar should be polished and ready to rumble. Oh, she started well at suppertime. J.B.
