In our area spring riding starts New Years day... We have had 4 riders killed localy so far this year. Each has been hit by a car that "did not see them". The one exception was a fellow in a stolen car... he made an illeagal left turn on a highway and killed a rider and his lady... then got out of the car and ran away... he was found 36 hrs later. Our local government feels the best way to deal with this is to put all riders into motorcycle riding training with a graduated licencing system. This is one of the letters in our local paper today..... (hoping it works) http://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/letters/Make+drivers+aware+traffic+roads/2715331/story.html I hope your letter helps make your local drivers more aware !!!!!!!!!!!! Watch them.... they are not watching you !

I don't want to jack this post but as we are on the subject of tires and all..... Does anyone know about the "age" of tires. The wife picked up the new rear today... the front is back ordered..... the date code is 1305 on the "NEW" tire...... is that ok?
-
Good to see so much positive on the E3 tires... My wife is picking up my new pair this afternoon. A little more costly up here in Canada but I think they will make me feel a lot better than the 8 yr old E2s I currently have on my '86

Eh! (I am Canadian after all !)

My '86 Venture has felt kinda unhappy on the road lately.... as most of you know that is not normal for a Venture. I got home from my ride today and put it up on the center stand and with my wife as a helper I gave the wheels a good shaking. It seems that the rear wheel has play in, I assume, the bearings. My question then is..... is there supposed to be some play? How much? The front wheel seems to have none.... should there be? Are wheel bearings still available from Yamaha ? I will have to also assume that at least the right hand bag and I suppose both mufflers will need to be taken off to remove the rear wheel.... is there a tech link on a "how to ...." for the rear wheel some place here I can refer to? I know from reading others calls for help I will get lots so thank you up front. Kevin

I live close enough to the winter Olympics to day trip over if I wanted...... We wish for snow in our prayers before bed every night...... Turn on the TV and watch the 2010 Olympic Games from Vancouver..... RAIN !!!!!!! Sorry but it is bright... full sun and around 14*C (about 60*F) here today.... We did have about 3 hours of snow so far this winter and about 6 days it got to freezing. And NO Mother Nature we are NOT complaining !
-
Happy Ground Hog Day to all ! I am sorry that those of you in the East and South will continue with poor weather....... according to the Ground Hogs anyway! It is bright and sunny here with about 48*F and you know the bike is coming out for a ride! Enjoy the day all !! Ride safe!!!

Rainx works best I think.... I have used Pledge and it works well. Rainx is advertising now that is is ok to use on plastics... I use it on my windshield and visor.... not my glasses! http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2009/cup/nhms2/1rainx-nhms2-lside.jpg

For the first time in my adult life I do not own a VW. I drove a VW bug when I met my wife had 6 or 7 more bugs ..... only one wife! Sold the 1973 VW van we have had for the last 18 years as the kids grew. I discovered that the north american car makers installed all these fancy things like..... HEAT.... Defrost..... no more scraping the inside of the windows before you can drive....... Thank you GMC. I now have a 2005 GMC Jimmy and loving it. A project VW bug is in the not to distant future I think as the kids are starting to leave home.

I only got 14.... I thought I was better at my US historic facts than that......:95:

The ice and snow falls into a liability issue with children. If your child slips on the ice at school and cracks open their head or breaks an arm then what? Most likely a leagal action will begin. If your school district is like the one I work for there is little to no money or staff to properly keep all school areas clear. The city I live in does not own a snow plow.... some of the out lying areas do. Does 3 -5 inches of snow close schools here? YES. It also closes rec centers cancils almost everything that is non urgent. We may get 2 to 3 days per year where snow is on the ground.... Let the kids enjoy it.... stay home. OOOh and in 1996 when we had 2 feet of snow on the ground and a blizzard hit with an additioan 4 feet on boxing day night.... the military was called to help us. Gotta love our troops ---- at home and over seas!

I am sure glad I live up here in Canada where it is warm and sunny and I was out riding in the sun the last few days........... Not moving south anytime soon!
-
I have used them also with great results.... they are open late into the evenning deliver what they say and I have had no difficulty with parts crossing into Canada from them.

Thank you Freebird for this inspiring letter.... thanks to you I feel fantastic now. I thought it was tough here with my family on Christmas day but now I know just how lucky we are. Thank you, I hope it gets better from here for you. Kevin

Thanks for the links Monty. I also have a '05 GS500 "for my boys" to ride. Had to tell the wife something before I brought it home...lol

I have used "rainx" and "rain-away" both work well but I am told that they MAY damage the plastic. The other fantastic product is Pledge furniture polish.... I prefer the lemon scented.... use it on my helmet visor also. It rains a lot around here to prove they all work well. Ride safe........... Kevin

I hate to see ads like this but I guess it will happen to all of us at some point. This fellow was soooo happy when he found this bike and had great plans for it... and him. So anyone looking for an '86 that has been well ridden and well cared for...... or just drop him a note to send your good wishes. http://www.vibikers.com/forum/index.php?topic=2865.0

Any time you leave from a US port you will have to stop in a Canadian port of call.... I do recommend the stop in Victoria!

Wife and I were given an Alaskan Cruise for our 50th birthdays this year (sailed in mid August) by our kids and families. We went from Vancouver which is about 3 hrs from our house by bus and ferry. We checked our bags at the bus depot in Victoria and they were in our cabin when we got there. The sights are unbelievable..... We live on the west coast and we thought we knew what beautiful was until we took this trip..... I shot over 700 photos in 7 days. Holland America was fantastic... if you have never seen a glacier before your heart will skip when you see these things! Icebergs are the most awesome colour of blue ! I assure you, if you go with this and we can scrape the cash for another set of tickets we will go also. Oh and if you are cheap like us..... expect 1,500 USD spending loot.... plus booze! It was the first time in 23 yrs we had left our kids and taken a holiday. It was worth the wait, but we will not wait that long again.

I invite everyone that is also using facebook to keep in touch with their friends and family to check into this facebook link. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=66782887392 This is a group of young (early 20's) university students from Victoria BC Canada. These ... let me call them kids, and yes I am the proud father of one of them..... are setting up to ride bicycles across canada to raise money for a very very good cause that should be very close in any long term riders mind, Brain Injury. This facebook link is only to help build awareness that these kids are going ahead to do this.... there is no request for money anywhere. My son Brad (22 yrs old) is one of the driving forces behind this and is going to be the main rider. He will have one of his female and one male cousin join him on the ride. He will likely have have my 18 yr old son drive a motor home... if they can get one.... Trec bicycles are giving him some bicycles at cost and many other sponsors are coming on board as they progress. Ride safe all................ Kevin

Staying off takes a life time of work.... it is worth it. I quit 6 or 7 years back now... The company I was working for offered us all $500.00 to quit. I am not sure about you guys but I thought about all the things I could use all that cash for......mmmmmm. One of my co-workers also tried but failed even after gum, patches, m&ms, and even the hypnososis guy that came to the hotel for one night only and all his tapes he sold along with it. One of the things you mentioned was that you snuck a smoke from the wifes pack..... Well I will tell you what finaly helped my co-worker quit...... His wife also continued to smoke.... heavily I may add. I dont know what smokes cost down there but up in Canada they are close to $10.00 a pack. He took himself the same money his wife spent on smokes.... put in in his own bank acount and spent it on cars.... he would buy them wrench them and sell them all with his smoking money. Soooooo think of all the toys and stuff you want for your bike and every time you think of having a smoke think of the toys.... what do you want more........ Just my thoughts... the other thing is ...... stop counting..... I was told if you can tell me the number of days you have been with out a smoke then you are not a non smoker.... you are just taking a break. I hounestly do not know how long it has been.... I could look back in my records... I have other markers in my life I can refer to but no I dont know exactly.

Ok... 18 years in the heating trade... take it or leave it...... If you save a couple dollars this year with a new electric system then maybe next year the prices change and you are back to even or behind. IF you have a good quality propane furnace... up here we use natural gas.... then switching to electric will be a band-aid at best. Like I often hear when the price of gas goes up... it will cost you an extra $0.50 to fill a tank...ouch... but then the price goes down again....even ! Take the money you THINK you may save over the next 5-10 years and INVEST it in your home. High insulation windows... doors... energy star apliances.... low energy light fixtures..... etc etc etc..... This WILL save you money, hoping a new furnace will save you money is a way too big of gamble. Energy costs are going up, it will not matter what fuel you are using..... learn to use less. I have a 94% efficiant natural gas furnace in my home, along with a good programable thermostat. Control the house temprature set back at night and when you are at work.

What kind of temprature does the average '86 venture run at.... my guage seldom moves by much unless I am in traffic. The fan only comes on when temp is very high.- 21 replies
