  1. The only thing better then a Black Venture is... a Black Venture with a Cherry on top! Black Cherry Rules!

  3. Most of you know Don graciously hosts this site free of charge for all of us to use and enjoy. He pays all the bills from his own pocket and never asks for anything from the members here. I just sent a donation and I hope some of you can do the same and help Don with the expenses. There is a donation button at the top right of the page.
  4. What are the black plastic pieces that are on top of the valve covers and do they really need to be on there?
  5. LOST BUT NOT FOREVER, FIRST I'D LIKE TO THANK ALEX AKA FLOYD, HE HOOKED ME UP WITH A TEMPORARY COMPUTER AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO THANK HIM ENOUGH. HE'S TOP SHELF IN MY BOOK:cool10::cool10:
  6. I bought a harbor freight trailer kit. I will be painting it black as the standard red paint just doesn't go with my 2 tone blue 89 VR. I am curious as to what others have put on top of the trailer. I have looked at the Sears x-cargo 189.99 http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02872020000P?vName=Automotive&cName=Automotive+Accessories&sName=Car+Top+%26+Hitch+Carriers The dimensions look like it would be alright. I checked into painting it to match the bike but wow. The body man said it would be $200 or more. That sort of negates the savings of the HF kit. He also incouraged me to get something in fiberglass. So, What have others put on top of their HF kits? Tim Lantz
  7. Well, here are the pics of the fire. Not much left and a lot of damage to clean up. However, the family is ok, vehicles are good, and bikes are just a bit dirty. A great loss for Ron and his family. However, he has a positive attitude and will come out on top. JB
  8. How many of you guys do the Nightshift thing and how do you get to sleep on those days when your head is going and you know you are going to need your rest but something fires you up and you can't sleep. Want to go back and take care of business RIGHT NOW! I have a Inspirational speech to give to staff tonight and don't know how I will do with that on top of everything else. Can't sleep. Tonight is going to be rough.I've tried the Sleep-Aid pills, don't do anything. Not bike related but need some rest with hours I'm pulling. I Could Retire!!!!!
  9. Greetings all. Noticed that I was having trouble keeping tight, the 4 bolts that secure my top box. I'd go for a ride with or without the pillion-in-a-million and after about 30kms I'd notice that the top was 'bouncing' and I could hear a rattle. No matter how often I'd tighten the bolts, the damned things would be loose in no time. Decided to take them out and give them a dose of "Lok-tite", only to find that they had been gradually slamming themselves to death. Appears that as soon as they loosened up and the top box started to bounce, the bolts were being damaged. Have ordered new ones. In the meantime, have a look at the damage to these 3. Whadda y'all reckon?
  10. My audio system started to on it's own cycle through all functions at will especially when vibration was present. engine idle, going down hwy etc. It would work perfectly normal with bike setting and engine off. The Mechanic suggested as has been suggested here to check all connections behind the fairing behind the dash . I did that and I also applied dialectic grease as suggested on posts here. To no avail. I took it to my mechanic @ the dealership & helped him troubleshoot the problem. We noticed that even with the main control pod turned off the sound of the cycling through the speakers was still present. To make a long story short it was deduced that the main brain located behind the top fairing just behind the cassette deck tape slot was the culprit. They ordered it directly from Clarion and it came in in about 1wk. Thank God it is still under warranty because the brain is 1,000 dollars if I had to replace it. I also had the main switch replaced 2 wks ago when they trouble shot the Audio. That is another 3 to 4 hundred expense that I would of had to endure. The Yamaha warranty is awesome. My bike is an 03 as you can tell top of page Duh! No other bike in the world would be under warranty 4 yrs out would cover these problems. I also have about 62,000 miles on my bike. The K&N yamaha dealership service manager just called me ironically as I am doing this post to see if everything is functioning properly. That's service. I have bought all my new bikes from them for these reasons. K&N is the oldest yamaha dealer in the U.S. established 1957. The Head mechanic has been there for 20yrs + and can work on anything. The junior mechanic age 21 just won the top Yamaha mechanic competition for North America by Yamaha Corp. and went to Japan to compete for top mechanic worldwide. Guess where K&N got there name. Norm Mcdonald owner was partner with the k ( I can't recall his name) but they designed the K&N filters many of us use and love. Norm sold out his portion of the company some time back. K&N is in Tulsa, Ok. I apologize for going on and on but with all the bad press some dealerships receive on this sight and the nightmare reports that a positive report might be due.
  11. I see that somebody just posted in the classifieds that they bought a '99 that somebody has put the pillow top seat on. He doesn't like it and is looking for a regular seat. Might be a good chance for one of you who are wanting the pillow top to make a deal. I agree with him though, the pillow top is WAY soft for me. I know that some of you really like them though.
  12. she was not going to stop. After spending several hours moving millions of leaves to the side of the road for leaf pickup, I decided to take a little ride and enjoy the mid 60's degree day. About three miles from the house I was on a nice back road going about 40mph and as I came to a slight rise in the road that has a road coming out from my right just over the top of the hill, I noticed the top half of a car coming toward the intersection. I immediately slowed down and just as I crested the hill, the car blew thru the stop sign and turned toward me. I layed down on the air horns and let them blast. If I had not anticipated the car doing that, I would have hit it right in the driver's door. I think I startled the woman as she almost ran into the ditch on the other side of the road trying to get out of my way. I am real glad I was paying that close attention, because she sure was not. seats

I have a 2002 midnight venture am looking for pillow top seats .
  14. Which seat do most RSV owner find to be the most comfortable. The Midnight seat w/studs or the stock pillow top. A local dealer has a Midnight with the Pillow Top.
  15. Well guys, I had been talking to Dan Stevenson about modifying his pillow top seat. At the time I told him that even though I had modified several RSV seats, I had never been into a pillow top version yet. But after what I saw from what Pat Hannon (jakenator6) had done to his, it was certainly not what expected. So I told Dan that I just happened to have a pillow top off my 2001 RSV up in my attic, so why didn't I just uncover it and see what I could do to make it better. It was just like Pat had shown where there were about 8 button hooks holding down the pillow top. And there was that layer of 1 1/4" foam covering the entire seat. And just like Pat explained I had to carefully tear it loose from the seat foam. But when I got if off, what I saw was a pretty sound foundation of base foam. And unlike the other RSV seats, this seat had a pronounced outer support built into the shape. On the other seats I usually have to cut the center down flatter just a bit before I start on the tailbone relief to provide this outer support. This seat already had this done in my opinion. So all I did to this seat was 1. cut the tail bone relief and 2. cut a curvature into the back of the seat. The back of the seat seemed to be more flat, putting pressure on the backside just above the crack . All the time I was cutting, I would put it back on the bike to see how it felt and this curve felt better. However, before I decided to put the cover back on I could clearly see that a layer of foam would be necessary to maintain the pillow top effect. So I used the old foam as a pattern to cut a new layer of memory foam (isolastic foam). The standard foam even though it appears to compress the same as even memory foam, it is more linear and pushes back across the entire area being compressed. Isolastic foam seems to compress more where there is more pressure and fills in where there is less pressure. In other words, it seems to fill in all the gaps. It also compresses to almost nothing under pressure but then springs back to it's original shape when the pressure is released. In finishing up, I glued the layer of memory foam to the seat foundation and then installed the cover using all of the button hooks to give it that pillow top effect. And after stapling the cover back on it looked pretty natural, but felt much better. How much better I don't know, which is why I'm going to give this seat to Dan Stevenson for a trip he is taking with his uncle to Montana later this month. Hopefully he will report back favorly or give me feedback to make any changes to my modification to the design of this seat. Attached is a picture of both the before and after of the pillow top seat. I just happened to have a 2005 RSV with a pillow top in my garage so this is a picture of both seats. The modified seat is on the bike where you should see the change to the tail bone area as well as the curved back. Stay tuned for more, Rick
  16. at least a misdemeanor, to charge a man $14.00, for a haircut with a hole in the top!!!!!!! . just jt
  17. ok well i have my carbs synched now and i've adjusted the idle but the bike is still getting poor MPG and still seems to have a lower top speed. is thier any way to lean out the Air fuel mixture? or is that what the idle screw does?
  18. My 86 Venture Royale has been tuned up and the dealer balanced the carbs. It seems to accelerate very well but dies off quickly as it approaches 90 mph. The maximum speed is about 95 mph. I ran cleaner through the engine which improved the acceleration but still no top end. Can defective carburetor diaphragms allow the bike to run smoothly, accelerate well but have no top end? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  19. What happens when the diaphragms go ont the 1300 motor? Does it limit the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the cylinders? If so that may account for my very low top speetd. Is it difficult to access the diaphragms to check or replace them?
  20. Let me start off by apologizing for these questions. I'm sure they've been asked before but having a hard time with searching for them. 1. I have read about changing the front tire to a narrower tire to improve handling. How does it do this? I was always under the impression that the closer the tire sizes the better the handling. 2. Is there a big firmness difference between the pillow top seat and the regular seat? I believe mine came with a pillow top and is way to soft for me. I was thinking of finding a regular RSV seat and use that if it is firmer. 3. Cupholders? I have read about a couple of them with pros and cons but was hoping to hear from someone that has had one a while and still likes it. 4. Why does my light come on and I go into reserve but when I fill it up it only takes 4.4 gallons? Isn't it a 5.9 gallon tank? Is there a trick to this? 5. If I remove the clear lowers on the bottom of the fairing will it direct more air to the midsection area? I love the bike but you don't get much airflow in the cockpit. I have also been toying with a lower windshield but at 6' I wasn't sure where the air would hit. Now with the tall stock screen it hits the top of my head. 6. Exhaust. I don't want something obnoxious but after riding a Vmax and then a Warrior I can barely tell the RSV is running. What kind of upgrades has been done to add some sound? Not loud, just louder or throatier than stock. OK that's it for now. I will continue to keep reading away trying to get some answers, I'm just kind of cheating doing it this way. Thanks everyone.
  21. My 86 Venture Royale will not go much above 5500 to 6000 rpm in 4th and 5th gear. It seems to hit a wall and won't go any faster. Can anyone suggest what the cause is and how to fix it. Is it a timing problem or weak valve springs causing the valves to float at high rpm? Otherwise the motor starts right away, runs very smoothly. I am probably not getting the acceleration that I should at the lower range but as this is my first Venture I have nothing to compare it with. At this time, my V-Star 1100 Classic has far more top end. Help!!
  22. Has any one installed a top rail to the saddle bags, I have not seen any, but need somthing to protect them as I am always draging my foot across the top of them when I get off of my bike??
  23. I was reading the threads a few weeks ago..about how the 1st gen. handles without the tour pak installed....Well, I thought I'd try it since Yammer Dan said the bike handled differently. Wow, I'm 5'-11 and around 160 lbs., and I can't believe it's the same bike...Handles better than I thought was possible. The VR has always felt top heavy to me..til I removed the big box...I weighed my TP and it tipped the scales at 31 pounds. Now, add stuff to the box and you can easily add 50 pounds way above the center of gravity, and you have a top heavy bike..I bought a piece of .100 thousands thick shiny aluminum tread plate from Lowes and made a luggage platform for a duffle with just clothes. All the attachment points are already available. Now, I can fill the saddle bags and that will help keep the CG low. I took pix of the set up, but have never learned how to add pix to a thread. If someone can instruct me, I'll post pix and, also, how I added a 90 degree zerk fitting to the steering head.... God, I love this stuff....
  24. I have a set of six coils off a Nissan Maxima engine that have the coils right on top of the sparkplug boot. I was wondering that if they would fit on top of the plugs on my bike, could I bypass the coils I have and run the respective wire that goes to the coil to the spark plug coil. I believe they only require a hot wire and a ground wire. Has anyone done this? I don't see why it would not work if the room in the plug area is suffient. Any comments? RandyA
  25. Here's a fairly dumb question, but I was just going to put the K&N's (ya-1399) in my '06 RSTD and looking at the directions it isn't real clear on whether to stick the included gaskets to the filter or to the airbox. I'm assuming the sticky tape side of the gasket affixes to the airbox and then the filter mashes down on top and is screwed in but I just thought I'd double check first before with you guys before I do it wrong and get a bad seal.
