  1. I hate to do this but I want to let everyone know the experience I had at my local dealer. I took my scoot in for a service repair and new tires and ended up with a badly damaged bike and a dance with death to boot. This may be a long story but should be well worth the time to read, it could save your life or your bike. Took the bike in to have it checked for why it would not run off of the choke. After a full week and a day (working days) they got to checking my scoot. Turned out to be that I had put bad gas in the tank. The technician (a kid about 18 years old ) told me when I stopped in to check that they had fixed my bike. He reported that they drained the bowls of the carbs and found water. He started the bike up and began to race the motor, I told him that it was not right and he ask that I take it for a ride to be sure. I rode the bike down a back alley behind the store and brought it back and said that it is not right. I asked if when they found the water in the bowls if they drained the tank and changed the fuel filter. This kid looked at me with surprise and said no they did not. ????? I told him to do this and I would back on the next day to check it out. Before I left he told me that they had an accident and damaged my bike. He could not tell me how but the bike fell in the shop and damaged the front fairings, windsheild, saddlebag, and trunk. They noted on the work order that these items are to be replaced or repaired at no charge. This was O.K. at this time for me. I left specific instructions of the repairs I wanted made ( do not disassemble my carbs) and then I wanted a phone call before anything else was to be done to my bike. Two days went by and they called to let me know that they did these repairs and also removed, disassembled, and cleaned the carbs.. My new Avons were in and they would put these on 1st thing in the morning and I could get the bike on Friday. I went in, told the Parts Mgr. (who totals the service tickets) what my experience had been and we needed to discuss my bill. He listened to my description of events and made the bill where it was a fair invoice. I paid the bill and went to inspect my bike for more damage. I found a scratch on the tank and another on the saddlebag and reported this to the Parts Mgr.. I rode the bike away. This is where I had my dance with death. Coming off the interstate at about 65mph, I begin to slow down, touched the front brakes and the nose dove down nearly throwing me off the bike. I pulled into a gas station parking lot to inspect and found that the front brake disc was put on backwards. Thats right folks, the thing was backwards, metal to the rotor and friction disc to the caliper. I called the dealership and reported my problem and was asked to bring it back in. When I pulled up to the service department I told the Service Manager to inspect my front brakes and tell me what was wrong. He saw it immediatley and began to apologize. As he began to take my bike into the shop, he dropped the bike right in front of me for the second time. It hit the concrete and I hit the sky. This was not nice and I probably should be ashamed of the way the words flew but these people almost killed me on the highway and then dropped my bike for the second time in front of me. I then had the Operations Managers attention and they are trying to make this right. I have a list of 15 items that are damaged on my bike all because I trusted these morons to do their jobs. Oh and by the way I paid my bill and still have a torn up bike. Shame on me. I urge everyone to take the time to check the people who you trust to touch your motorcylce. I have used this dealer before and have not had any problems but this can not be overlooked. I do not know what the resolution will be at this time but I wanted to let everyone know and learn as I have from this experience. " We can EXPECT what we INSPECT from service centers. " I will not release the name of this dealer until this has been resolved and then I will let you all know the rest of the story.
  2. Well Jeff, here I am again..While I had the carbs out of Bertha, I took the opportunity to do some preventative maintenance I had been putting off. I replace the leaking valve cover gaskets and I had found a coolant hose collapsed. Also, it was time for new antifreeze. Carb. cleaning was uneventful after the screws were finally removed. Reassembly went reasonabley well, however it took me a long time to get the control cables hooked back up. Anyway, all is back together and I cannot get the bike to idle below 2500 to 3000 rpm. Is this a TCI problem? The bike ran a little ragged for about 10 miles, number two cylinder was cutting in and out, running rich and then spark knocking . Then the engine seemed to run better. Up jumped the idle. I have backed off the idle screw again and again to 1000 rpm, yet the idle rpm jumps back up after a short ride. I can find no hoses off anywhere. Have you had this problem before? Any ideas...anyone

    What a Great Summer

Good morning Ventureriders. Haven't posted in awhile so thought I should get aboard. Wow! What a great summer of riding it has been and with fall temps in the 80's in Northern Michigan we are still riding. Our best ride was riding the western Lake Superior shoreline thru Duluth and all the way to the Canadian border. If you ever get a chance, take this ride "It is Breathtaking"! If you like rugged shoreline, lighthouses and water falls this is the one. Figured our mileage this summer and came up with around 8K. Not bad for a couple retired ol' farts! My darlin wife rides behind me about 99.9% of the time. Not sure how long we will be able to keep it up but I think I will know when it is time to hang em up. Our RSV has performed flawlessly. The only problem I have is keepin the lady awake. Ha! Ha! Ride Safe and you riders who can ride all winter long- - - we eny you.
  4. On Sunday, Oct 21st, Lone Eagle and myself (Condor) are taking a ride to Woodland Ca. for BBQ RIBS at Ludy's, then on to Reiff's Gas Station to take a look at an awesome antique collection of 1930's, 40's and 50's Gas Station memoribilia. If we have the time we'll also take in the AG History Center. Anyone in the San Francisco/Sacramento/Nor-Cal area that would like to join us is more than welcome. We'll meet for lunch at noon. It's going to be a great time. And bring your cameras. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-tex1_rd75.png This is the perfect location for your next Car Club gathering! Book the patio for your next luncheon or just stop in for a tour. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-usethismap_.jpg
  5. Went to a marine swap last Saturday and came home with a 'hit'n'miss'. It doesn't look like much, and it never may. I just couldn't help myself. I love to hear these old things run, and I always make it a point to spend some time taking in the display of chuffers at the State Fair. Besides I need a break from scoots for a while.....
  6. Did I mention how much I love my wife? I really, really love my wife! My dad use to race three wheelers, and I have wanted one of my own for a very long time. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/Ggerg1186/DSCF2154.jpg
  7. Hay you all. Is anyone headed to Fayetteville Arkansas this week end. If so I will keep a eye out for you. It should be a good time. :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:
  8. If you are looking for an insurance horror story, this ain't it. Last Thursday I totaled my '04 Midnight RSV. Late Thursday I called in the claim. They promised to have someone call me back within 2 hours, they did. That person told me that an adujster would get with me the next day, Friday. Late Friday afternoon the adjuster, a really nice guy, came to my home to inspect the bike and prepare an estimate. He indicated at that time that it would probably be a total loss, it was. He called this morning to set up a time to come by and discuss the settlement this evening. I must say at that time I was expecting to have to negotiate a bit. I didn't. I "settled" for $13,039 after my $500 deductible. Seemed very fair to me a 3 year old bike with 40,000+ miles. The check is in the bank and I should have my new '07 black/blue RSV on the 15th. The adjuster was very polite, courteous and dependable. He did what he promised on time. Only 5 days from crash to settlement with a weekend in the middle. So if anyone asks for an insurance recommendation from me, it's Progressive. DT
  9. Hello all... I am sadly having to put my 2003 RSV up for sale. I've placed an add in the classified section. If you know anyone who wants a great deal on an awesome bike please pass the word. I simply do not have time to ride nearly as much as I would like to at this time in my life. Instead of the scoot sitting in the garage covered I figured I'd allow someone else to give this a new caring home. It's been a great bike but it needs a new home and one that will be able to ride it. John
  10. Greetings all. Public holiday Monday here in my state. Wife says to me yesterday, "Do you want to do a run to Orange tomorrow (125kms away) and do breakfast so I can check out some tiles?" (We're renovating, but who cares? Any excuse for a ride). Didn't have to ask me twice. Up at 6.30 and on the road by 7. Bee-u-tee-ful day. No traffic to speak of that time of the day and the temperature is around 15degC. We got to Orange around 8.20 (couple of stops on the way) and noticed a breeze starting to stir. Did the tile looking thing in the big hardware store (and bought myself some big-boys' toys in the tool shop) and walked back out to the bike. "Sheesh", says the boss. "That wind's picked up quite a bit". So we head off back home. The further we go the more windy it gets. By the time we got home after an hour of non-stop riding I was nackered. By my estimation we had an 80km/hr (50 mph) crosswind ALL THE WAY. Not funny, I can tell you. Every time we came out of a cutting we were blown sideways towards the on-coming traffic lane. I think I've worn the left sides of the tyres away from keeping the bike on a constant lean into the wind. You watch, as soon as the sun goes down the wind will disappear. Hate that. Oh well, back to work tomorrow. Probably ride. Can't be any worse that today was.
  11. Folks, this is a hard thing for me to even mention here. I am NOT mad. I understand that bad things happen sometimes to good people. I just want to mention it though because I can't handle this too often. I got my bank statement today and found that a check that one of you sent to me got returned for insufficient funds. This is the second time this has happened. I never mentioned it the first time because I really just hate talking about this kind of thing. It has to be said though. I'm not even sure who the check came from. I will contact my bank on Monday and try to find out. I THINK it was for a donation to the site. While I know it was made with good intentions, the bottom line is that the donation ended up costing me $60.00. That is what my bank charged me for the depositing the bad check. I think it is nuts that my bank charged me $60.00 for a bad check from somebody else and rest assured I will be talking to them about that also. I'm sure it will do no good though. The other one was a couple of years ago but the end result is that I've lost $120.00 due to these two checks. I'm sorry to say that I will probably no longer accept checks for any donations, patches, parts, anything else. It's just not a chance that I wish to take any longer. Sorry it had to be said. I know that the person who sent the check certainly had the best intentions and would never have let it happen on purpose.

  15. Finally made it back....Had a great time camping out....I had forgot how beautiful it is down there.....In all did around 1300 miles ....Took some of the roads some of you had suggested.. Did a lot of hopping over the border into Virginia..(Love Rt33 thru the mountains into Virginia) That has got to be one of my all time favorite set of twisties. There's a few pix in my signature (if it works) Got the Venture the dirtiest it has ever been took it up Dolly Sodz...Thought the thing was going to rattle apart ha!...Then took it up to Reddish Knob from the Sugar Grove side....Very dusty...Found out later I could come in from the Virginia side on paved road... Tell ya what it's hard to beat setting around an open campfire with friends and big ole T-bones on the grill with a few cold ones after a long day of riding... Liked it so well ...Were heading back down the weekend of the 19th to do it again..... Also.. if anyone get a chance take Rt 47 out of Parkersburg (WOW!) Very nice...Take it all the way untill you hit Rt 33....Nice twisties and switchbacks...
  16. Them there 1st Gen'rs are awful quiet here lately . Could it be the Dark Side taking over or retirement time on the old EGO-maniacs ? Did their "Ride-On"done rode off and left them behind ? Or could it be another embarrassing post on how they lost another vent on the side of the road ? What your excuse this time ? :rotf::stirthepot::stirthepot: BEER30
  17. A drunk driver killed a friend of mine last night while he was out running errands on his bike. Mike was good people, someone you could always count on and the type of guy you just wanted to ride with. Squidly reminds me of Mike and I liked Squidly from the time I met him. When I got the news I was P.O. I have spent the day thinking of all the neat rides we shared. As well as a wedding dance. The last time I saw him was at a Funeral of a friends Dad before moving out here to Vegas and I gave him a big bear hug and said I"m not going to say goodbye just till I see you again and we both got a little misty. Writing this is helping me grieve and it hurts allot because I was wanting to call Mike and tell him what a good friend he is,but put it off cause I will be in Minnesota in a couple weeks and figured I would see him then. So now it looks like I will say till we meet again when I go to his burial site. He loved to ride and loved family and friends and I know there will be allot of both at his funeral. I hate the fact another drunk has taken such a good friend away. So far to date this makes My Dad and 2 good friends someone driving while under the influence has killed. Thanks for listening..............................................Ron
  18. I finally decided to order myself a Clearveiw windshield last Wednesday via phone . I received a phone call this past Friday (2 days later) to say it's ready to ship out to me . It was shipped that same day and I should receive it on the 27th . On the website and at time of ordering via phone , I was told the dreaded 7-8 week lead time . You see , Miracles do happen or is it that I am just a nice guy ! :rotf: When I placed the order and received the phone call about the shield being shipped sooner , they were very friendly and pleasant to talk with , almost as if I were sitting on the back deck drinking a beer with them . Now that's service ! I ordered the XX-tra tall , tinted shield to help the buffering off of her head . Now , what's next to add to the scoot ? BEER30
  19. When October 13 Where Weaping Radish Manteo M.C. Time High Noon We had a great time at the last meet and eat at the Radish lets do it again Jeff
  20. How many of us complain about cagers cutting us off, turning in front of us, not letting us in, etc? An older biker (gad, I like saying that) gave me some tips and I have been trying to practice them all of the time. Be polite: Make sure others see you so than can avoid you, he told me to wear a white helmet. You know it sticks out like a sore thumb, with a black jacket. Use hand signals: I use them in heavy traffic and get lots of room and more than a few friendly waves. One guy in a pick up truck followed me through traffic just to make sure no one rear ended me, just because I used hand signals (as well as flashers). I know because we both happened to stop for gas at the same time and he told me. Don't flip someone off if they screw up: Others will see it and maybe not so courtious to another biker somewhere down the road. I know that we all know this, just thought I would bring it up again. I do like using the hand signals, it's fun. Let me and otherrs know what tips you have, it can' hurt.
  21. We have been thinking of going to Death Valley in October. Would like to do it on the RSV but wondering how the conditions are likely to be that time of year. Does any one have any experience with that area? And particularly around that time of year? Any suggestions?
  22. I'm thinking that maybe it's time for another contest. What do you think? Any ideas? As you know, we are a listed club at the New Enough website. http://www.newenough.com/ Not only do they have great products, service and prices but when you buy from them, you have the option during checkout to choose VentureRiders as your club of choice. Every time you do that, they make a small donation into our account there. Over time it does add up a bit and then we can use it for rally prizes, contests, etc. So, it's time for a contest to give away some of the money...most of the money...that we have in our account there. So, how about a $100.00 gift certificate from New Enough for a lucky winner. So....all we have to do is come up with a contest. I've had a few thoughts but am open to your suggestions. What do you think?
  23. This is the first time that we have participated in a venture rider get together. We enjoyed meeting all of you and we had a great time. We look forward to making another one. Thanks to all of you. Raymond and Joan
  24. I didn't want to wait too long I know lots of folks need to get their dates in for vacations by the beginning of the year. So here it goes: August 6 thru 10th of 2008 will be the date for the Asheville event. That was the date that got the most votes and a few said either was good. I have heard from some that they'd like to go to the Biltmore house I know they have group rates, but you have to call. So this week I'll call and find out what that would be. I know one of our members was involved with a car group that went so I may tap him for help on this. I'm figuring maybe that friday would be the best day for this. I know with all the events it's hard to choose, at least this way you have advanced knowledge on when this will be. I'll post with any other details as time goes on. I'm going to ask the advice of others who have organized events like this. This is the first time I'll be organizing something so big, just hope I can give you all a good time. If you're interested in checking out what's at the Biltmore here's their web address: http://www.biltmore.com/visit/default.asp Margaret
  25. We had frost warnings here last night. Predicted temps in the mid to high 30s. I don't think it got that cold but I'm not even ready to hear those predictions. Just doesn't seem that I've gotten near enough riding in this summer. I pulled the trailer out today and got it washed and waxed and polished the chrome. Then put the cover on it and put it in it's designated winter storage corner of the garage. I'm not done riding for the year but any long trips that would require the trailer are pretty much over with. I tell you folks...there is just WAY to much going on at my house. Seems there is not enough time for Eileen and I to have any time together. I know I've not posted here near as much as I usually do but things are just hectic right now. As you know, Eileen lost her sister a year or so ago due to cancer. It really took a toll on her after being the caregiver for a couple of years. Now her mother is dying of the same thing and she is doing it all over again. She is really having a hard time dealing with it all so please keep her in your prayers. Don
