VR Assistance

  1. A couple of months ago I got an 83 Venture Royal project. When I first got it it would turn over slowly. I've had the battery out while I've been working on other things. Now when I try and start her everything dies when I hit the starter button and I need disconnect the battery to get it back. Is there anything I should check before I remove the starter? Is there a way I can do and initial check on the starter before I remove it from the bike? I know enough about electrical systems to be dangerous. I’m in school at Washtenaw
  2. I've read up on a couple of threads on Cold Blooded for after my VR sat for 5 days it had a very tough time starting and to keep running and getting warmed up. It must have taken 5 minutes or more for the temp gage to just start moving up. I did not ride it but let it warm up to normal operating temp. Now this morning about 24 hours later my VR started right up and in about 1 minute I could put the choke off. So what would make the difference between 1 day sitting and 5 days sitting? I'm in the Seattle area and even tho we are almost in May, It hailed in Buckley yesterday, so it was quite cold last night around 37 degrees. Just wondering being that I'm trying to get a feel as to how often I should start the VR up being that I'm not a daily rider or even a weekly rider being that I work 26 days on and 2 days off. At this time I'll probably at least start the VR up once a week. I'm not trying to be too pickey but I thought that 5 days without running it should start right up.
  3. Tried to fire up the Venture last night and it will not start. Checked exhaust headers when she did start for a brief period and the back L&R were hot. Front L&R were cold. She would repeatedly fire and lug on the rear two cylinders for approx. 15 to 30 seconds and die. What should I check and how?
  4. Ok so let start this by saying. "Thanks to everyone that has commented on Avon tires that cracked":happy34: I've had Avons since 2005 (except for the emergency replacement). I would like to hear from members that have gotten Avon tires with-in the past year and had good tires. I love my Avons but am a little concerned about the recent cracking problems that a few riders have commented on. I almost ordered some E-3's but then decided to start this thread and wait till Monday to do the ordering.
  5. My VR will be running fine. I pull up to a light or stop in traffic. Sometimes it just dies like you turned the ignition off. It doesn't sputter before it does this, it just quits. It will usually start right back up, but the starter turns it slowly. Sometimes I have to push it out of traffic and wait a minute or two before it will crank fast enough to start. I have to put it in neutral, just pulling the clutch lever won't let it crank. It doesn't do it until it has warmed up and I have driven a ways (it usually does it when driven at least 10 or 15 miles in warm weather). It has a one year old gel cell battery and a 4 brush starter with large battery wire. Sometimes if I catch it quick enough as I'm starting to open the throttle, it will pick back up and run ok, until the next time.
  6. Now and then I see"low fuel light" mentioned. I have a 1999 venture with no such creature. I even walked once and nothing. Do all ventures have them or does mine just not work. If mine doesn't work, does anyone have any ideas where I might start to get one. Thanks Richard
  7. I know who knows....we were not riding it BUT today while out for a ride I really "lit" into the bike from a rolling start at a yield intersection. It really felt like the back end broke loose. This is a really heavy bike and it caught me off guard. Nice clean dry pavement. Will these bikes break the rear wheel from a rolling start??? Or was I imagining it
  8. It's over now... Went to pick up a 165/80R - 15 kumho tire at tire discount in jackson OHIO and they said there were none to be had in their warehouses because of the strike in Korea. Looked it up on the internet when I got back and it says the strike is now over... they had been fighting about a month... Passenger car tires are gonna start up first so we should be able to get some fresh ones shortly! :mo money:Although a little more expensive? "The darkside is strong with this one"
  9. I have an 89 VR. The last I rode it was mid Oct 2010 of which I just finished most of a tank full of seafoam. Did some minor maintenance. The only maintenance ignition and carb related was changed new plugs. It has been on the center stand with a battery tender all this time. I did start it once in the winter and allowed it to warm up really good. That was before I changed the plugs. Got the exact same plugs and cerified the manufactured gap. I turn the key and heard the clicking of what I think is the fuel pump. After 10 seconds the clicking slowed and stopped. I pulled the choke, made sure the run switch was on and then hit the starter. It turns over good. I was expecting that about the 3rd hit to the started I would get some form of life in the V4. The engine did kind of start as I kept on the starter and the choke, but could not sustain it self. I stopped and looked on the floor and saw a large puddle of fluid. I pushed the VR forward then smelled the liquid and yes it is fuel. With it on the side stand I noticed that fuel was leaking by the dampness indicator on the left side. But thats probably because I had put it on the side stand. I removed the left side cover and could see what I think is the mono shock and it looks really wet like fluid is leaking on it. Any suggestions?
  10. I have looked through the picture gallery and found no threads of pictures of our members. Well here is one and I will start it out. http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu264/reddog170/DSCF6089.jpg First the boss with the clock in hand http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu264/reddog170/DSCF6450.jpg
  11. we went to look at a 2003 venture ...turn key everything turn ons ...press button to start button and nothing ??? is it a burnt fuse?
  12. I was looking to spark test my plugs while off the bike (84 VR). Outdoor temp has been around -3 to 7C, and I can't get my bike to start. Just did a whole carb overhaul, charged the battery. Plugs have only 3000kms on them. Bike turns over fine, and for long enough before battery too weak, but no start. Took plugs out, and they are wet, so getting gas. Anyway, I have a 10000v transformer, and was wondering if I hooked it up to a plug to see if it is firing, would or could it harm them? Any thoughts Also, would 10000v be enough?
  13. Well the trailer for Annie and Allen to use is sitting at Dano's and I thought the weather should be getting better to start moving it again. I talked to Marilla (Vicco on the site) and she said the trailer could stay at their place in OR. They live about 2 hrs south of Portland. Figured it might be better to keep it somewhere in the family till they get here. So if we can start thinking of who can move it closer it would be greatly appreciated. With this group I know we can make this happen. We've moved stuff before. Thanks Margaret
  14. first ride of the year and with new rear tire and steering head bearon, wow that felt good.only did 215 miles but its still a good start. cant wait till next sat for the nc meet and eat.c-me later:bluesbrother:
  15. Not even sure if that is the correct term. What I mean is to be able to quickly go back to a thread of interest. I've been kicking around here for almost a year and I STILL haven't figured out how to "subscribe" to a particular thread. Brace yourself....I'm just about ready to start tearing into my 83 blonde! The flood of questions will soon start!
  16. I finally got around to working on the Venture. Got it running last night and took it for a hour long ride up weber canyon and Trappers Loop - That’s the success part. The bad part is it really does not want to start. With the enrichment on it will pop out the carbs a few times then back fires out the left side enough that the end cap on that side is blown halfway down the street. Usually it takes about ten min of work (some throttle, starter fluid) to get it to start once it starts it runs good. I plan on pulling the carbs and giving them a good cleaning. As I am cleaning them is there anything that I need to be looking for? No need to pull them apart and put them back together with bad parts that I don't know about.
  17. Last year my 2nd gen venture started right up as always. Pull choke press start, boom, immediate gratification. As the summer progressed, I would pull the choke press start, grind on starter for 5 seconds, engine starts small delay in gratification. Summer progresses more its now 100+ degree days, no choke press start crack the throttle grind starter 20 seconds engine finally starts. By the end of summer pull choke, press starter, grind on starter till I was ashamed of myself. Wait...............repeat, wait................. repeat finally starts. Then just as I parked it tried to start again......nothing but the ignition switch is on, the speedo does cycle through the checks, theradio controls all function. New fuel filter, fuel pump was replaced but did flow fuel as per the spec sheet. All lights function as they should. I did purchase a new TCI module as I thought that might be the problem and new plug wires. I am getting no spark to any of the spark plugs.
  18. I've got one for you electrically inclined. My cousin's 07 RSV ( with 7000 miles on it) would not start. Let me give you the symptoms. When he turned the key on, the lights came on, the speedometer, gas gauge, everything came up and was doing its thing like its supposed to. When he hit the start button, everything goes dead. Well, he thought it was the 30 amp main fuse cause everything went dead. He pulled the fuse, installed another one and it cranked right up. Okay, this happened a couple of more times, so he ohmed the fuse and it was okay. So, it hadn't been blowing the fuse, the fuse is good, but the only way he can get it to start is pull the main fuse, like its resetting something, put the fuse back in, and then it will start. Its still under warranty and he's going to try to get it into the dealer next week, but I thought I'd run it by you all and see what ya thought. When he takes it to the dealer, I'll let everyone know what they find out. Thanks, Glenn
  19. Hey Guys!---Guess what I found AFTER I broke the white plastic retainer on the throttle?----An adjustment screw just as the cable is coming off the carburator linkage!-----Now my delima is this---Does ANYBODY have a new throttle that I can purchase??---I'm looking on FleaBay but can only find an 83 model with only the on- off button and start button---Mines an 89 with the cruise controls and am not sure I can take the throttle off the 83 and make it work---.................................Thanks for all the advice Guys---and I sure hope someones got one lying around:fingers-crossed-emo.............................................La rry
  20. Or does it seem that nobody bothers to answer their phones anymore? I'm not talking about my friends or relatives either. However some of them don't like to answer their phones either. I'm talking about businesses, employers, etc.. Just to name a couple, I've been trying to reach a guy who contacted me via email about a lab tech. job and he never answers his phone. I keep leaving messages but he doesn't call back. Last summer I had applied for another job not to far from home that payed well. The woman who was in charge of setting up new employee start dates called me but called the wrong number. I got her message about setting up a my start date about 5 days later. I called her asap but she wouldn't return my calls. I got a hold of the main office to explain what happened and I was told I didn't pass their physical. I asked what par of the physical I didn't pass and I was told that the people who performed the physical didn't supply that information. Which sounded fishy seeing as how the message was to discuss my start date. There has been more than one time when I was looking for some goodies of some sort during normal business hours and they didn't answer the phone, I simply left a message that seeing as how there was nobody to answer the phone, I was going to take my business elsewhere. The last tie I was looking for a dentist, I made about 4 calls to different dentists until I got to one that was actually open or bothered to answer the phone. Now I know people get busy or have other issues arise, but it seems to be happening more and more. Ok, ok, enough ranting.I just needed to vent a bit. I've just been looking for a better job and it doesn't seem as though I'm being taken very seriously. I'm glad riding season is almost here! Bill,
  21. living here in frozen Arctic circle of Iowa (yeah, it's 32 below 0 ...again).... I start to suffer from brain freeze. It's a terrible disease and happens every year around the end of Feb. It's dark at 5:00, cold, blizzardy, windy, etc, etc. Honest to gosh.....everyone walks around here in a daze for months on end. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, tired all the time, it's miserable. Please don't tell me to move cuz all the family lives within 20 minutes and I would miss them to much. So..............anyway, just wanted to thank you for helping me keep my sense of humor. No computer at home, so the only time I can jump on is during work. Everyday, someone posts something so funny, I end up spitting my coffee out while I'm reading a post. I start laughing so hard, my co worker think I've lost my marbles. All I do is talk, eat, and sleep motorcycles. (I'm sure people where we live think we're nuts) I just really appreciate having this forum so even if the hubby and I can't ride for 6 months out of the year, it helps just to talk about it. So thanks for helping me keep my sanity!
  22. Ok last Friday I dumped the bike, I am fine just pissed my scoot isn't in mint condition anymore; although the scraps do add a bit of character. Anyway, I digress, is it normal for a raw gas smell and hard start after a tip over? I assume the answers to both are yes due to the balck magic of carbs. I ask this because as soon as I could get the bike back up and on the center stand I fired her up to confirm there was no case damage. Initial start was fine but about 20 minutes later after a shutdown of a few minutes it took quite a while to start (suppose it was flooded). I did find out the tilt sensor works great though. Anything else I should check before putting her back on the road? Thanks

  24. How many Ventureriders actually tried and why they didn't like the darkside? What front tire do you use? For informational purposes only. Not trying to start something. Please do not reply unless you have actually tried a car tire but didn't like the darkside? Thanks Joe
  25. With the key off I have power to the clock but as soon as I turn the key to the on position I lose all power. I was having problems with the charging system and I was told to check the plug between the alternator stator and the voltage regulator for burned connections. I accidentally tried to start the bike before plugging this connection back together and it made a weird buzzing sound and that is when this whole loss of power when the key is on problem started. So Now I need to fix this problem before I can finish repairing the charging problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Where to start? I'm kind of at a loss on this one. I tried searching the forums for a similar problem already posted but wasn't able to find one.
