  1. Searching for a tach that will work with the 2ndGen and it's driving me nutz... I remember something about a wasted spark discussion a while back, and have also run into D.I.S. ignition (or distributorless ignition) discussions. I'm not sure what we have??... and what to look for?? I'm trying to find a 2 1/2" dial tach with a matching 2" engine temp gauge. I did run into a couple of gauge styles... some pretty pricy.... but until I know exactely what I need it's kinda wasted motion. Anyone know exactely what I should be looking for, and also comes in an antique/chrome look??
  2. My daughter had friends over who damaged the string of C3 LED Christmas lights we strung on the back patio. I've replaced them and want to re-purpose the damaged set for holiday illumination of my bike. I want to wrap the luggage rack behind the passenger seat (note: I have an RSTD). Is it easy to run these LED Christmas lights from the bike? Or is there some current monkeying that I need to do? Ideally, I'd wire them into a Powerlet plug, and run them from the jack. Dave
  3. I believe my carbs are about to get cleaned up using the Seafoam and technical advice from Goose and some of you other techs. At least they're running smoother but the bike still revs between shifts. Another strange thing (to me) is the difference in the temp between the cylinders. Cylinders 1, 2, &4 run about 250 deg but #3 is about 400 deg.as checked with my handi dandi IR thermo gun. What temps should they run and will it hurt #3 to run 400+?? Will appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
  4. For those of you that have trailer wiring harnes, where did you route all the wires? Did you drill a whole on the rear fender to run then inside the fender or run them some how along the outside of the to the hitch? I bought a plug and play set up that connects under the seat. Thanks
  5. Well today I go in at 9 am for my Shoulder Replacement surgery. This las week has been a real PIA. They took me off all my pain meds in preparation for the surgery. So most of the time I've felt like I have been run over by a truck. Gonna miss not checking in. Be back on Friday or Saturday. Wish me luck, Jay
  6. I have been reading a lot of post of people getting HID. I have the HID from HID Country installed on my bike and I love it. I was looking around on the HID Country web site and noticed that they offer quantity discounts. If we can get 20 orders together, the same setup that is on my bike will run $34 plus shipping. We can mix and match kits, so you can get whatever color or bulb style you need/want, or even get HID for your cage. Is anyone interested?
  7. There were two nuns One of them was known as Sister Mathematical (SM) , and the other one was known as Sister Logical (SL ). It is getting dark and they are still far away from the convent. SM: Have you noticed that a man has been following us for the past thirty-eight and a half minutes? I wonder what he wants. SL: It's logical. He wants to **** us. SM: Oh, no! At this rate he will reach us in 15 minutes at the most! What can we do? SL: The only logical thing to do of course is to walk faster.. A little while later... SM: It's not working. SL: Of course it's not working. The man did the only logical thing. He started to walk faster, too. SM: So, what shall we do? At this rate he will reach us in one minute. SL: The only logical thing we can do is split. You go that way and I'll go this way. He cannot follow us both. So the man decided to follow Sister Logical. Sister Mathematical arrives at the convent and is worried about what has happened to Sister Logical. Then Sister Logical arrives. SM: Sister Logical! Thank God you are here! Tell me what happened! SL: The only logical thing happened. The man couldn't follow us both, so he followed me SM: Yes, yes! But what happened then? SL: The only logical thing happened. I started to run as fast as I could and he started to run as fast as he could. SM: And? SL : The only logical thing happened. He reached me.. SM : Oh, dear! What did you do? SL : The only logical thing to do. I lifted my dress up. SM : Oh, Sister! What did the man do? SL: The only logical thing to do. He pulled down his pants. SM: Oh, no! What happened then? SL : Isn't it logical, Sister? A nun with her dress up can run faster than a man with his pants down. And for those of you who thought it would be dirty,
  8. fixing to buy some and i've heard alot of you say dont go back with the met go with the avon vennom. my local dealer said that he's had trobule getting the avon to balance, has anybody run into this problem? according to the laod limt u think that the met had the highest but may not be good for thr rsv.
  9. Ok if you have a RSTD or a venture and have put Yamaha passing lights on your bike do you run them all the time.
  10. And got my other 1st Gen out. Tucked "Brown Sugar" away in Skids garage and got "Ugly" out. Think she was mad at me for ignoring her for the summer. Coughed, farted and burped most of the way home til she got over it and started to run about 1/2 like she should. Guess I'll have to baby her for a while Ain't nothing wrong with having the Two Fastest Ventures in the area!!!
  11. I can only figure that it's fuel related, like maybe bad gas or excess moisture in the line. It happened 3 times on Friday in an hour, then OK for a few days and about 90 miles, and then again twice earlier today, and then OK since. After it cuts off, it fires right back up again with no problem. I put about 6 oz of B-12 Chemtool in it on Friday, thinking that would help, and thought it was until it cut out again today. I'll run it again from Wednesday through the weekend pretty heavily when the weather clears (rain tomorrow and Tuesday here in the ATL) and see what happens. Gotta feeling I've got a fuel filter replacement in my future. Maybe some new plugs too. Any other thoughts, or anyone having a similar experience that you have found the solution for, I'd love to hear about it.
  12. I'm goitn to rewire the auxiliary lighting on the back of my bike. Currently I have an extra tail/brake light and trailer lighting which is run through an isolation relay set. All of the taps were made using the scotch-lok type connectors (I know they are junk) and it really looks like a mess under the seat. Some of the connections were made by the installer that wired up my trailer lights and some by me. I want to solder all of the taps to the bike's lighting circuits and then run a line to a power strip where I connect the auxillary lighting. What is the best type of power strip to use? So far the only thing I've found looks like the attached photo. Is there something better? Photos of you installation would be helpful. This looks like it may be a cold Saturday job. Thanks, Dennis
  13. Pretty afternoon ride with my best girl! http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Autumn%20from%20the%20pillion/100_0065.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Autumn%20from%20the%20pillion/100_0008.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Autumn%20from%20the%20pillion/100_0066.jpg More here: Photobucket Album
  14. I'm helping a Friend add the Kisan vectraLight - Brake Light and Turn Signals to his 08 Electra Glide Classic. I'll need to splice into the existing run, turn and brake wiring. To simplify this, Does anyone happen to know what the color code for these wires are? Thanks, Rich
  15. Went for a ride this morning and my CB will not turn on. Radio worked fine. CB has been working fine until this morning. Tried a search on here, but the words CB and on are too short to use as keywords...:-) I did recently have the seat off to install an Ultimate backrest. I'm not sure where the CB is, but there are wires that run along the top of the rear fender under the seat. Did I mess something up with them? Open for ideas on what to start checking. Scott....
  16. i've searched for feedback concerning tires for my second gen. currentley i have metzler front and back with the smaller front than factory. i usally ride two up with 36 in front and 41 in rear however after a 612 mile run to the beach and back the rear tire is cupped very bad and needs to be replaced all though it has pleanty of tread left. maybe i need to run more preasure i dont know,i use a digtal gauge which i think is accurate. any thoughts i'm wide open, thanks:bluesbrother:
  17. For anyone who might be interested you can see pictures of the toy run at www.shutterjunkie.ca That takes you to his facebook site then scan to the toy run montage and click on www.shutterjunkie.ca Proof that santa rides a Venture, and it has to be a second gen so he can make it around the world in one night. I told the kids there that the reindeer were on summer vacation.
  18. have an 88 royale pita, have done all normal things, cleaned carbs, new battery cables, cleaned starter, fixed oil leaks from stator and p/ucoil wires, had it running good on all 4,then after about 10 minutes tach started going up and down ,neutral light faded out, then it would drop no 2 cyl.then slowly die out.try to start back-up sometimes it will, and sometimes you have to play with all switches, clutch, sidestand, etc.then will start right up and run good for a few more minutes.charges at 13.6-13.8-goes to 13.1 when fan kicks on,it acts like its losing or shorting to ground, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  19. Does anyone know how many Venture Royales 1300's were built during the entire run from 1986 - 1993? Just curious!
  20. well, not quite trailer, sidecar really. My leaning sidecar came originally with a 480x8 wheel with integral hub, I am upgrading this to a separate hub and wheel combo from Northern Tool. Here's the rub, when I install everything there is a hump like you would have on a spoke wheel with the spokes adjusted wrong. If the swingarm is somehow not perfectly even, would the tire not still track straight albeit under an angle Am I correct in assuming that if the hub is cast incorrectly the whole wheel would run under an angle? Could the wheel rim be warped? What would the effect of this (sideways) wobble be at high speed with this size tire? I am trying to get the side car back on the bike and run it before next weekend's March on Rome, so I am kind of pushing on this to get it re-attached and aligned. Thanks for any feedback! And have a great Labor Day weekend!!
  21. Curious What temp does the oil get on a air cooled V-twin ? How hot is too hot to run ? Brad
  22. Long time friends have a daughter with terminal cancer and today they had a poker run to help defray some medical expenses. I didn't know about the run until this AM but decided I could at least make the starting point and help with a donation. It was a 120 mile run with the 5th stop being an afternoon cook out. Hot dogs, hamburgers, ham, slaw, potatoes, baked beans, soda and iced tea. There was some other stuff to eat but I'm on a diet so I didn't pay too much attention. I didn't get an official count but another friend was manning the last station and he had, when I left, 87 cards turned in. What a GREAT day !! oh yeah, my thumb went numb a couple times but it was well worth it. btw - I reaffirmed today that I shouldn't bother playing poker
  23. I got an 86 xvz1300 parts bike. I use some parts off it. Now looking at it as a street rat project. What electrical systems can I eliminate ie. class, audio, instrument cluster, ect. and still make it run? I'd like a bare bones basic system including charging/starting, ignition and lights. Will the engine run without the computer stuff in the gauge cluster? Would like the anti-dive to work. Someone must have tried this before any help would be greatly appreciated.
  24. Just back from cabot trail east coast tour about 3000 miles for me. Here is the problem, mike bike (2002 midnight Venture-65000 miles) will run great for about 10 or 15 minutes then something happens and the floor boards, bars and even the seat sometimes start to shake or vibrate, sometimes very badly. performance also drops off, it is as if you are dragging a parachute behind the bike. It will go but you have to push it to make it go, normally this bike just wants to run with my little 165 pound body on it. The bike will run this way until you stop for gas or a drink at the side of the road then the cycle starts all over. The bike runs so fine for the few minutes it does and so badly the rest of the time (I would think it is dropping 1 or even 2 cylinders when it is running running its worst). The bike will also come back alive after running like crap for an hour, but usually only for a few minutes. Here is what I have done so far- Replaced coils, 3 sets of plugs, pulled carbs 4 times-last time I took out every valve even float valves soaked it over night, set floats according to Goose instructions, ran 5 cans of sea-foam (a couple of strong ones), sync'd carbs with morgan carbtune a dozen times or more, changed the fuel filter twice, new plug caps (NGK), Air filters have 5000 miles on them, ran with gas cap cocked a little, Any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated, I really love this bike, but I have spent more time working on it than riding it. If I can't come up with something there will be a wing or an ultra in my garage shortly. By the way I broke down and took it to the Yamaha dealer they said GET THIS- that's normal, that is the way those bikes run- UNBELIEVABLE! Most people would not last 1 hour riding down the hiway on this bike. All I can think of is maybe the fuel pump or the ignitor box. Any help from the great minds here would be greatly appreciated, I would really like to keep this bike. Thank you..
  25. Next time your bike wont start or run right because of wet weather or washing, try spraying the entire ignition system including the plug wires with a heavy wet dose of WD40 or other quality penetrating oil. It will flush the moisture away and 9 times out of ten the bike will run normal. 2nd point if it works it is a good indicator that some part of your ignition needs replacing.
