  1. Hey Everyone,, Vern Here,,, I have been enjoying my new 09' Venture,,, Today I was up at 3:00am hit the road, Met my friend Rodney @ I-10 & Chaffee RD at 4:30AM we headed to the A1A and Atlantic Blvd. I usually won't go near Jax Beaches area on the weekend, Traffic is a Giant JAM, but I wanted ride to Daytona on A1A. It was great @ 5:30 am . we stopped watched the Sun Rise,, had B-Fast at the Beachcomber Restuarant ( St. Augustine Fl. ). Its about 3 miles south of hwy 312, turn left on "A" Street. Go to the Ocean, it doesn't look like much, but the food was great,, huge 10" pancakes. ( Assorted Flavors), its a small place. we ate out side, service was great. Bike is doing well, wish it had an electric windscreen, the dealer did not properly clean the front rotors, front brakes are squealing their A@# off, I've cleaned the pads and Sanded the Rotors, its alittle better, but not correct. Will replace Pads. Went to the J & P store on US 1, Looked at Farkles. I need alot more $$$$$$$$$ !! Anyway,, excellent bike, hope everyone had very good 4th OF July! I've enjoyed this site as well,, Seems like cool group of riders. Later Vern
  2. I need to remove the front rotors to work the HF bead breaker I have (without breaking the rotors). What the heck are those screws holding the covers on? Torx maybe? Dave
  3. ok im looking to see if there is a link or post here on sparkplugs im realy into tearing the bike down. with a good yamaha rider. not a venture owner. but has a stable full of old yamaha,s ok he got my tires from the guy who was suppose to have done them the last time and didnt. also got my brake pads and did the rotors. so i now know i have the new tires on the new brake pads and the rotors. bike is realy starting to come along thank the good man above for this man. well he decided to pull the plugs. due to me useing the seafoam and still haveing some idle issues and slight backfire on right hand side. well the rear spark plug on the right hand side had something hard and black stuck between the electroid and the L on the bottom? so im thinking this plug wasent fireing? sorry i didnt snap a pick but it looks like a hard piece of coal?. where going to install fresh plugs. and recheck idle and stuff. he doesent have a sync tool or know how to sync the carbs. so anything i can do or try. also what type of glue can i use to fix some cracks in the side covers? both are cracked about 2 inches on the front part of the covers . or should i use a hot solder gun and melt them from the back side?
  4. I have a pair of MK1 and a pair of MK2 front rotors that are cluttering up my garage. They are used, in fair to good shape. If you need them respond here or PM..
  5. There is an 84 Mk1 Std near my house, has the 2nd gear problem but is really clean ~27K mi and CHEAP. Haven't driven it yet but owner says it runs well, he had it sold but the buyer balked on the test drive when it "had a shifting problem". He said "make me an offer, I want it out of my way" Thinking of buying as a parts store for my 88 but my research says a lot of parts wont fit (but a lot will). Can the Gen 1 experts here confirm or correct my list. Thanks Parts that WILL fit ???? Carbs Clutch basket Starter Stator Regulator/rectifier TCI Fairing plastic header pipes & Collector Misc Electronics components Gas tank Fuel Pump Radiator & Fan Instrument cluster Clutch master & slave Brake master (F&R) Engine (If I fixed 2nd gear) Wheels (minus rotors) Parts that WONT fit ???? 6. I know this has been asked before, but for the life of me I can't find the right threads & posts. Did the search...no joy! Would anyone be so kind as to recommend a brand of brake pads for my '98 RSTD and a retailer or two where I can get them at the best prices. I don't play canyon racer wannabe or anything like that (not like we actually have canyons around here anyway) and I am generally not hard on brakes at all, so they won't have to be some special race capable part. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a source or two for rotors, while we're at it, just in case! Thanks in advance...
  7. Got the trike back Saturday. Apparently the drive shaft was aligned wrong and the rotors were bad on the rear brakes. There was alot of vibration and noise. Took it back to the mechanic and they had to adjust the drive shaft and put on new rotors. Since I picked it up Saturday afternoon, I have put several hundred miles on it. It's running way better now and I'm loving it! Except for the gas mileage. I was getting 36 mpg before the trike kit and now I am only getting 26-27 mpg. The carbs have been synched. Anyone have an idea what else it could be? I posted some more parts for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested. Will post more pics when I get time. See everyone at the rally next week. Don
  8. Any of you guys ever put a caliper (the measuring sort) on your rotors? I installed HH sintered pads on the RF brake (the one that works with the lever) about 19k miles ago. I had heard mixed reports that sintered pads can be hard on rotors, so I miced the rotor at installation, after a couple thousand miles, and again this morning. Then I looked in the manual. I included the boring details below for those of you inclined toward boring details, but in short, both my front rotors are under the min thickness spec. It seems that there is only about .020" from new rotor thickness to minimum thickness, which is a little chincy I think. So I wonder how many others have rotors worn below spec? How many ever measure to find out? EBC sells rotors for about $150 each for these bikes. Has anybody used them? Thanks, Jeremy BORING DETAILS! I checked out my brakes. The sintered pads have been on the RH front brake for 19k miles and are maybe 2/3 worn out. Interesting, because the LH front and the rear organic pads - which I have never replaced so they have at least 26K, and I don't think the PO replaced them so they have more than that - are still very thick. I thought sintered were supposed to last longer, although that's not why I put them on (I wanted the extra bite with the hand brake). Either that info is incorrect OR I use that one front brake (hand lever) a WHOLE lot more than the linked foot brake, which is entirely possible given old habits. Both front rotors have a ridge on them that measures .281, so that must have been the starting thickness. At 54k when I installed the HH pads, I measured .253, .243, and .240 working from just under the ridge toward the axle. Now at 73k I measured .248, .239, .234. So there's been 5-6 thou of wear. If you look at the original thickness, and figure that 5-6 thou" represents 19k out of 73k total miles, and that 19k had heavy usage on that brake, it's pretty reasonable wear really. I wonder if organic pads would have done the same? For comparison, the LH rotor today measures .255, .248, .246 (I didn't measure it before), which are closer to the RH "sintered" numbers than to the original .281. I just checked the manual and the listed minmum thickness for the front rotors is .260, so mine were under that before I got the bike. Hmmm...
  9. I am looking for a set of 84 VR front rotors mine are cracked but work. TOM
  10. I am working on a "science project" in my garage this summer. I need two matching steel brake rotors from a motorcycle. Larger diameter would certainly be better. My only requirement is that rotors must be of some material where a magnet will stick to it. Used and abused is fine. Cheaper is better. If someone has a couple of scrap rotors in their garage, I'd like to make an offer. If you must know, I am trying to make a small scale eddy current dynamometer. I want to compare the "performance" of thin motorcycle rotors to the ford mustang rotors I am currently using.
  11. I heard here that you can rehab the brake rotors by taking a sander to them. does anyone have and instructions about this? do I use a drill mounted sander and try to get the sanding marks all the same way? do I use an orbital and just rough everything up? They look grooved but when you touch them they feel smoother than they look. do I just leave them be?
  12. I have the NEW rotor specs for 83 venture but would like to know the discard specs for the rotors. ( if there is discard specs ). If too thin I want to replace them.
  13. Hi all tomorrow i will be putting my rotors back on the wheels of my 99 rsv frt & rear dose anyone know the touque spec. And what is the best lock tight to use if any. Thank you kevin wisor 1999 rsv jax fl
  14. I want to get rid of these brake rotors. They were for the front of my 83 Venture. One is pretty good, the other is not so good but usable till you find something better. Just cover the shipping. First come first serve guys. I am in zip code 46319. Box is 12 x 12 x 5. about 3 pounds. Or just call it $10.00 and I will have them off to you. Email me at 73rallye@gmail.com
  15. I have a 89 VR, want to replace brake pads front and rear. Where should I get the pads and do I need to do anything to the rotors before the install
  16. I have an 01 RSV, are the rotors made of stainless steel. It's time for new pads and the ones I'm looking at say for stainless steel rotors only.
  17. Well, I finally had a chance to take a closer look to see what caused my front end wobble/bounce after I had put on new brake pads and new metzeler tire on the front. After several of your suggestions about fork brace, warped rotors, stuck calipers, wheel bearings, etc., it turns out that the tire was simply not mounted properly to the wheel. The darn thing was never beaded all the way to the rim. You should have seen the looks on their faces when I took it back to the bike shop where I got the tire and I told them I almost went in to a ditch because of such a simple, overlooked issue. At least they remounted and balanced it the right way this time. Thanks for all your suggestions and especially to those who offered to give me some free rotors, but I don't think I'll be needing them right now, as the wobble/shaking seems to be fixed now. btw, this site is awesome!!!
  18. Hi Folks: I have a friend that dosen't have a computer. He's 78 and loves the 1st gen venture. We found him an 85 in very good condition but he needs all three rotors. Does anyone have any to sell or someplace reasonable to get some that are in good shape? Wayne
  19. Is there a better place to purchase brake pads from other then the stealer?? and what about what kind?? any better then others? Do these ever need the rotors turned?? my bike has 10k on it and am starting to hear the brakes a bit, thought I would change them before the riding really kicks off.. Thanks for any help and advise, also, should I change the fluid out also and what do I put in it.... that answer is probably in the M.O.M. but thats to easy and I trust ya`ll`s input more then what is in the book... Thanks, Kreg
  20. Anybody know if 84 front rotors will fit on an 85 VR?

    First Gen brake rotors

Does anyone have a source for new or oem replacement rotors, that don't cost as much as some of these bikes sell for? Tired of the cracked, warped, mostly marginal thickness, and unsafe stuff on Ebay or other sources that sell used rotors. They are inexpensive but most sellers (my experience) overlook the real condition of the part. Any experiences with the EBC Pro lites on these bikes, or input on any other available replacements? The EBC's are low carbon, less friction according to sites that review them. They are also lower friction , which might be worth looking into for you RSV riders with touchy rear brakes, just a thought. Fronts are good for now, but the rear I think got bent, maybe when a tire was mounted somewhere along the way. I will be removing my rotors from now on before dropping wheels and tires off for mounting. Would be interested to hear how others are managing this issue with these older bikes. Thanks
  22. Will 1987 rotors work on a 84 with original calipers? I have a warped rotor and may be able to get a set from an 87.
  23. Hello People, I'm new to this site and have lots of questions. I just bought a 92 Venture form a guy at work. He pretty much wheels and deals with bikes. This one has 70K miles on it. It needed some TLC, so I got a deal(I Think). So far I have replaced the vacuum lines on the cruise, replaced the carb boots which mount the carbs to the head, replaired several electrical connections including the E4 error for the suspension controller. Now I need to replace fork seals and brakes. My main question is on the rear rotor, which bikes have rotors that are interchangeable with this bike? Are any compatable front to rear? I have been looking on ebay and have seen some. I am on a limited budget and would like to have enough to spread around to other areas that need work also. Thanks for any input:cool10:
  24. Hello all, I'm new to this site and lookin for some information. I just bought a fixer upper from a friend of mine. Ot's a 92 Venture, so far I have replaced the vacuum lines to the cruise, carb boots which connect the carbs to the heads, repair the connections to the suspension controller(E4 error). Next on my list is to replace the rear brake rotor. It seems to be warped. When applying the brakes there is a definite shudder and the front rotors look fine. My question is what other bikes use the same rotor, are some of the front rotors the same as the rears? I have been searching ebay and there are a few out there. I am on a limited budget and looking for a deal.
  25. To y'all who have used EBC HH pads, how do you like them? Do you find that they wear your rotors out much more quickly than standard pads? Thanks, Jeremy
