  5. Anyone know of a GOOD reference for checking and replacing the front brake pads on an 08 RSV? Many thanks!
  6. I am about to tackle replacing my clutch fluid. I've read posts here about pumping the clutch and bleeding it. However, I have invested in a MityVac and plan to use it. I've never done this before but from what I've read it seems that all I need to do is connect the vac to the bleeder valve and pull the old fluid out as I pour new fluid into the master cylinder. Is it really that simple? Has anyone used a MityVac to do this? Attached is a photo of the MityVac kit I bought. Thanks for the help, Dennis
  7. Recommended plugs that I can buy at Canadian Tire or Auto Value? Replacing spark plugs requires tank removal? thnx
  8. Putting my 83 back together yesterday was going quite well. When trying to start it, the positive cable started smoking. Upon closer inspection, I could see it needed replacing some time ago. Any idea where to get one with the main fuse cord and all that??
  9. Hi, my left front turn signal works but the left running light doesn't. I have passing lamps. I've tried replacing the bulbs, no luck. Any suggestions?
  10. Hi All. New guy from BC here but have been riding my '84 VR for 15 years and enjoy reading the posts here. Somewhere I saw one about replacing the shift linkage bushings with a generic hardware type since they don't appear to be available from Yamaha. Now that I'm replacing my stator I'd like to snug things up in the shifter as well. Anybody remember where I may have seen this or be aware of a serviceable replacement? Thanks!!
  11. I posted this on the watering hole forum hoping more people would see it giving me a better chance for success, here goes again, a while back I saw a pic of a 1st gen with a padded sissy bar replacing the entire trunk setup and it also had leather saddlebags on it. Anyone remember seeing this bike? if so can ya help me find the thing again?! Thanks:detective:

    Replacing the rear shock

Not sure when this darned cold snap will end that it gets warm enough in the garage to work on the bike. When that happens, I am replacing the rear shock on my 1st gen. and was wondering if anyone has pics and/or a step by step explanation of the procedure. Would appreciate if anyone has so I have a better understanding of what I'm getting into. Would appreciate knowing if there are any special tools needed, and roughly how long this job should take. Thanks
  14. I just know you guys and gals will understand. My Kawi has 150/80 x 16 rear and 130/90 x16 in the front. They are tube type since I have spoke wheels. Where oh where would a fellow find car tires to fit this. I am especially interested since my front tire needs replacing (35000km) original tire and I am looking at mounting a sidecar. I run a metz on the back since the oem needed replacement at around 28000km. Thanks for the input:think:
  15. I have look in the Tech section but I did not find anything on brake replacement. Can anyone dirrect me to a thread on replacing the rear brkaes? Thanks, Danny
  16. It's another. Replaced my front tire the other day, it's now a Maxxis Classic WWW, looks beautiful. However, it seems to be losing a bit of air pressure while sitting. Haven't ridden it more than a few miles since replacing. I did install the Ride-on into the tire. Is it common for a new tire to lose air until, I dunno, everything gets more set? I checked the valve stem, it seems secure and I don't hear any air escaping. thoughts?
  17. Any procedures for replacing these?
  18. Where could I get one of those? I have a new LED spinner tail light but it is red and doesn't show very well with the red lens. I was thinking of replacing it with a clear one. Thanks
  19. I think I have the original headlight in my bike. I think it says Kyoti and it does say Made In Japan. When I look Kyoti up on the Internet, I see tractors! Would I benefit from replacing this headlight with something newer? lol. It is dim for sure!
  20. I have the front end of my bike removed due to me replacing the cracked inner fairing & replacing the steering stem bearings (since I'm in there...). My fork lower show the 48K of wear and tear and I'm thinking of either getting them and the shrouds polished or chrome plated. Can someone list the pros and cons of either approach? I'm thinking chroming will cost more but is it more durable and less maintenance intensive than polishing?

    Clear Veiw Windsheild

Who has a Clear Veiw Windsheild & what do you like about it or dislike. How tall, vent or no vent? I am thinking about replacing the factory sheild on my bike. thanks Doug
  22. I am looking at purchasing a bike in Montgomery, AL. It is virtually new - per the owners description. However, before I send a significant chunk of money to the owner, I would like to lay eyes on it. And since I am still snowbound in frigid Wisconsin, I was wondering if there is a set of surrogate eyes in AL that could help me out. I don't even need it to be ridden, although that would be OK also. Just want to know if it is as described. Is there someone who would be willing to help me out? Thanks, RR And, no, this is not replacing my beautiful RSV. It is an addition to the stable.
  23. I have been looking at ads and info on the net about battery desulfators. Given the long rest periods over our Canadian winters, I have had the experience of replacing batteries come spring and thereafter. Anybody have experience with these? They look like a great deal to me! Harvey
  24. I got my 2000 MM RSV all back together after replacing the fuel filter, bumping the carburetor jets up one step, opening up the air box openings, replacing the air filters with K & N, and replacing the intake manifolds. I even have the carbs all pulling together.. Man, you wouldn't believe how far out of sync they were. #1 and #2 were out just a bit and #3 and #4 were out a bit more but the difference between the two sets compared to each other was unbelievable !!!! I set the idle rpm to what felt right (no tack) then started tweaking. Got 1 & 2 in sync then 3&4. Had to drop the idle just a tad. When I started adjusting the sided to side sync the idle went through the roof.... I bet that sucker jumped 1000 rpm. Brought it back to earth then tweaked back and forth until all four were pulling the same. Now I anxious to go see what a difference this makes in performance. That will have to wait. I have lots more to do. I'm in the middle of the "Winter Tinker Time"..... :hurts: Folks if you haven't already become good friends with the tech pages - do so before starting any projects. Thank you so much for all the GREAT tips !!!!! If I hadn't looked at the carb sync tip I'd have been there for hours trying to figure out why things weren't working. I'm surprised Yamaha didn't catch that mistake in their shop manual...
  25. Hi, Headlight on 83 VR used to work ....both high and low beam, stopped working on high this fall , therefore high beam warning lite stays on.... I'm assuming switch on left handlebar might be bad... Not the greatest light beam now..., but I am going to look at painting inside of headlight cover as suggested and I'm replacing driving lights soon too... Still a well functioning high beam would be nice... Anyone had to replace switch???? Running wires as well as choke cable look interesting ..... Clay
