  1. I don't think I have a problem, but if I start to I want to know it. The Yamaha dealer told me that "if it holds air, it's fine". Is that completly true? I am gonna crawl undernear and look for oil before the riding season and keep a close eye on it. I would honestly rather pay to have a new one than have a problem on a trip....which brings me to.... If the rear shock went out, other than riding like crap, can you still ride it? (I would have it replaced, but would rather have it done local than having to go back and get it. Thanks (hope this isn't too much of a repeat question) Ben
  2. Tried to go for a ride today--No luck---battery was dead---I jumped it and rode for 30 minutes then turned her off--nothing on the restart attempt but a slow Grrrrr then tick- tick:doh:---I have only had the bike for about 2 weeks but the previous owner gave me paperwork showing that he had replaced Battery-starter-stator all in November of last year.........I jumped it off again and while it was running I removed the ground cable--she kept on running--also the voltage meter shows it is charging just fine......think I just got a Bad "new" battery?---............................Larry
  3. Just got back from Charlene's second follow up for her spine surgery, which went very well, she is healing up fine, back pain is gone, at the same office we had an appointment with another surgeon to look at her hip and knee, she will be having her right hip replaced sometime in May, which is just around the corner, she is releived that we are moving on a lot quicker than we expected. I think if it were me I would have contacted Dr. "K" by now....but she has put up with more than I ever could, then if she still needs it the knee will be replaced next. Charlene spoke to the Dr. office today and the date is set for May 19, so in a little over 2 1/2 weeks back to the hospital. Like I have said before, this is her rebuilding year...........
  4. Has anyone had an issue with to much SeaFoam fouling your plugs? I ran about 1/4 tank of fuel, and an entire can of SeaFoam to clean my carbs. Now my plugs are shot. I had to replace them just to get it to run. However, that being said one thing I noticed, is only the drivers rear cylinder was running. I could, and did, unplug all 3 other plug wires, and it ran. But if you unplug drivers rear plug wire, it won't run. After that replaced the plugs, with used, as did not have new. Will get new plugs today. It is running again. But, still seems to be a a bit rough. I know the carbs have never been synced, as the little brass plugs are still on the carbs. So, gotta figure this problem out now. Sheesh, what's next? So far, has new wires, new plugs-now a bit fouled, replaced the fuel pump and filter, replaced the selector valve on the tank, regluing all the plastic fairing pieces. Still needs the clutch bearing fixed. I am hoping this is not a money pit.
  5. Thanks very much for all the help I got in getting my 88 Venture running. I had bought this bike as a non-runner. A friend put me on to it since he knew I was looking for a 88 Wing and he had a friend that had medical problems and needed to get rid of his Venture (I had never heard of a Venture). Clutch did not work so rebuilt master and slave (I would never of believed that the slave would come out of that little hole if it had not been for the posts) brakes needed bleeding. There was a mouse house in the radio compartment. Needed a new battery. Very very bad gas in the tank. Choke would not move because of dried gas. Carbs were gunked up so I replaced every rubber part in carbs (did not know Yamaha rubber could be so expensive) I did get the diaphrams from ebay. I also replaced the carb screws with stainless socket screws. I did do the resistor thing to get the bat light to go off. Repaired the securing pins for the side covers. Replaced fuel filter and changed oil, filter and rear end grease. Changed the o-ring in the draining/running valve. Replaced spark plug wires caps and spark plugs. Got progressive springs for front. Polish clean polish clean polish clean. Got the carbs back on hit the started and started right up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sync the carbs, got new tags and insurance, got it off the work table and took the first ride. What a change from rideing smaller bikes. I was surprised how good it sounds, I thought it would sound more like a Wing but sounds more like my Trident. I took it up on the 4lane and pushed it a little when I checked my speed I was doing 75 and I was not realy pushing it. Looks like I have a bike I can take a trip on with less than 40000 miles and a total investment of about $2800. This would not of been possible without all of your help. Thanks, Ed
  6. Bought this 83 last November and have put about 600 kms on it since. Other than an oil and filter change, and a right muffler that i replaced due to rust.....its been great. Even the casette player works fine! http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Tarl-Saxon/100_0412.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Tarl-Saxon/100_0408.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Tarl-Saxon/100_0411.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Tarl-Saxon/100_0406.jpg
  7. On my '86 VR, I've got a drip coming from the drain valve plug under the center of the radiator. Are there o-rings in there that could be replaced, or should I try to find a new plug? Any ideas? Thanks.
  8. Generally my venture doesn't take much choke to start it. After a cool start up from outside I drove straight into my garage(no warm up). Next day went to start and only running on 3 cylinders. three hot one cold. Took the plug out it was wet and fouled, I replaced only that plug but it still is not running the same. Any thoughts on this? Should replace all plugs? Just replaced begining of last year.
  9. I know you are very busy making the M/C covers BUUUUUT have you ever looked at the the side covers of a 1st gen , the round parts in the middle , they have 1200 or 1300 on them ? they would look a whole lot better being replaced with V4 . OR do I need a Just thinking out loud , I know i should not think Thom
  10. I am just now reassembling my 86 VR after much TLC over the winter. Question: has anyone left the black air dampers off the engine? {just on top of the valve covers}. Any reason to use them? I want to thank all the technical contributers here for their work, it has helped alot on my project! The list.... removed fairings and fixed all the plastic cracks with epoxy and "glass, and repainted fixed class computer rebuilt the suspension/bushings with the zerks, lubed shaft etc removed the stereo/cb and all related components and replaced the plastic covers with stock non-VR parts [about 30 lbs of stuff} replaced the seat with aftermarket {bought used from here} replaced fork seals and front brakes replaced the pipes with new Macs {bought here} adjusted valves, tuned, carbsync etc I only rode the bike once after buying it last fall... so I am itching to get going! Thanks, Gary
  11. Has anyone replaced the indicator/dash lights with LED's??
  12. I have a clearview windshield with a vent. The vent has lost steel ball that adjusts the vent open and close, the spring is still there. Has anyone replaced the steel ball? Need to know size and where to get one. Thanks
  13. I can crank the bike up with full choke and it will warm up fine but with a lot of popping. I push the choke in and it slows down, pops a lot and then cuts off. When I give it gas it will rev up but not hitting on all four cylinders. I have checked the plugs they were just replaced not even 8500 miles ago. The carbs were cleaned also at that same time. I also replaced the fuel pump because it went bad at that same time as well. I have ran sea foam through it also. I am thinking the carbs are out of adjustment real bad. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else might be wrong. My mechanice is 3.5 hours away and I really don't want to have to trailer it all the way down there if I can work on it here at my house in my garage. Thanks for all the help in advance. Robert 'TheKid'
  14. ive got an 01 rsv and have coolent seaping from both rear heads. well just under the head from a small rubber plug on both cyclinders . already replaced the radiator cap but still seaps after two days . is the plug like a freeze plug or what ?
  15. Rehabbing the old bike. Replaced all instrument panel bulbs, turned on ignition and the headlight warning illuminated. Headlight is very dim and won't cycle lo-hi beam. Replaced bulb, same situation. Now making sure the battery is fully charged. Light worked fine up until now. Any ideas?
  16. Does it seem to you all that car/mcy batteries just dont seem to last as long anymore? I mean I remember when most of my car batteries lasted more than 4 years, some 5 years. I bought my Chevy Trailblazer new in 2002. I just now put in its 4th battery today. Had lunch at Mojos BBQ and came out and the truck was dead. Nice waitress boosted me and I made it home. Yep, she was stone cold dead again. Load test showed a bad battery. DMM says its charging so im good there. Original died at 2 year mark while the others made it 2 1/2 years before they too pooped out. The last 2 were Napa Batteries. Replaced it with a battery from O'reilly's Auto Parts. 84 month warranty with the first 3 years free exchange. Figure if I get another 2 1/2 out of it at least it will be replaced for free.
  17. I've replaced the 07 RSV I wrecked a month ago. ABS was a must this time around since wrecking in the rain which meant another RSV was out of the question. Maybe in the future Yammie will finally update the Venture and I will be back on one but for now this bike will have to do. It's a 2006. I do still have my '97 RSTC so I'm not completely out of Royal Stars. Here is a pic I stole from the previous owner.-Jack http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b152/bigjack1/wing/wing.jpg
  18. Getting the bikes ready for the ride to Daytona. We replaced Redbeards 99 RSV front pads. When we took off the old pads, both copper/brass shims were mising from both sides? Did this shim come on a 99? I know I have them on my 2001. What purpose do the shims serve? We simply replaced the pads, leaving out the shim, but what effect does this have on the brakes?
  19. Looking for a Cassette Player for a Midnight RSV. Seeing you guys have replaced the Cassette Player with gauges, cd players and storage areas, figure there might be one out there for sale cheap. Really only need the door cause my Cassette Player door is scratched and it stares at me in the face while I am riding. Don't know if just the door can be replaced but willing to replace the whole unit if the door cannot be. Thanks Guys.
  20. Perhaps I'm confused about the clutch and clutch basket. Are they the same thing ? I'm starting to get aggravated with the noise ( whine, chirp or whatever) in my 2007 Venture and have seen where some have ordered and replaced the basket. Is that the entire clutch ? or just a part of it ? I did look but couldn't find an answer. Thanks in advance
  21. Last week I installed a Shinko 230 Tour Master front tire, V-rated, on my 1988 Venture Royale. I ordered it from Motorcycle Superstore, at a good price -- less than $70 including shipping. I went on a 200-mile ride on lots of "invisible roads" with twisties, straight sections, and a short section of high-speed interstate. All roads were dry. Excellent response from this tire, rather quiet -- much quieter than the Continental it replaced. No problems of any kind. Still to report: How it handles on wet roads, and how long it will last. If the tire passes these two tests, then it's a helluva bargain. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  22. A while ago I posted that I was frustrated with my dealer about fixing my bike. Two months later I get it back. To make a long story short. The problem was that the bike would start as soon as you turned the key on. I did not have to touch the start button. The replaced the starter relay, solenoid, and handle bar switch still had the problem. They decided to trace the wires to check for bad wiring. The mechanic spent 25 hours and found an 18 inch section of the wiring harness was bad. The replaced the complete wiring harness. Still had the problem. They called in a Yamaha tech who spent one day on the bike. He was puzzled never saw this problem before. They replaced the entire wiring harness in the fairing but still did not fix the problem. After several techs and non techs traced more wiring they found the problem to be in the radio amp power supply. They put in a new amp and the problem has been fixed and all is good again.
  23. Well my odometer just passed the 100K mark last night... I bought my 03 in June 05 with 10K on it on ebay for $8500... It had been dropped and I had to do some work to it but was very rideable and only cosmetic damage.. The only out of pocket repairs were a Stator which I replaced with the Buckeye Performance Higher output stator which works fine powering my 55W Passing Lamps... A Clutch which I replaced with a Barnett Pressure Plate and new factory discs.. The Barnet has a little stiffer pull which you really don't notice after a while until you ride your Buddy's stock RSV and sometimes it can take some doing to find neutral but I would buy another Barnett in a heartbeat.. I also had to replace a coil in TX which would have been a warranty item had I known going in that it was the coil but Yamaha had the coil backordered at the time and I was down there working... The Independent shop hooked me up with a used V-Star coil and it's been in there since... I had the valves adjusted at 60K and the mechanic (Yamaha Dealer) was kinda sketchy on how they were. I replaced the original still working battery in 07 cuz I was doing a long trip and I never had a battery last 4 years before so I didn't take any chances.. Warranty repairs: Rear Shock, Ignition Switch, and CB Antennae which the dealer ordered the FM Antennae so I have to radio Antennaes which don't bother me cuz I only listen to the CB occasionally.. Usually to find out why traffics backed up.. I don't own a headset so my Ratchetjawing days are over... That's about it except 3 sets of brakes and a whole bunch of synthetic oil and tires... All in all this has been the best bike I have ever owned and I've got the most bang for my buck... I hope it goes another 100K..
  24. Can anyone tell me how many led's my 2007 RSV will support without putting my charging system in overload ?? I have fears of taxing the stater and causing a burn-out. At present I have replaced both front and rear reflectors with led's but I want to add a strip or two with about 70 to 100 led's.
  25. I just bought an 84 Venture, with 50,000 miles 80,000 km 2nd gear works fine. Is there a way to tell if it's been replaced?
